ObjectivesData on the problem of physical activity-related injury (PARI) in university students and the risk factors for PARI among different genders are rare. We conducted a multicentre population-based study to investigate the occurrence of PARI and to explore the gender-specific risk factors for PARI among Chinese university students.DesignCross-sectional study.ParticipantsA total of 5341 students in grades 1–3 at eight universities in four Chinese cities were selected to complete the online questionnaires during March and April 2017. The questionnaires assessed sociodemographic characteristics, physical activity PA) involvement, sleep duration, sedentary behaviour and PARI experiences in the past 12 months.Main outcome measuresPARI during the past 12 months.ResultsAmong the 5341 participants, 1293 suffered from at least one PARI in the past 12 months, with an overall incidence rate of 24.2% (males: 26.2%, females: 23.2%) and an injury risk of 0.38 injuries/student/year (males: 0.48, females: 0.32). Over half of the injured (57.3%) experienced a withdrawal time of PA and nearly two-fifths (39.6%) required medical attention. Irrespective of gender, Shantou and Xi’an students, sports team members and those who engaged in sports and leisure-time vigorous-intensity PA (VPA) at a higher frequency were more likely to suffer from PARI. Male students who participated in sports and leisure-time VPA for long durations had a greater likelihood of sustaining PARI, while having a chronic condition and being involved in sports and leisure-time moderate-intensity PA at a higher frequency and longer duration were potential contributors to PARI among females.ConclusionsThe occurrence of PARI and its risk factors differed by gender, which provides a direction towards developing targeted and effective gender-specific preventative programmes to protect Chinese university students from PARI.

Background In China, university students might be more physically active as their release from heavy academic burdens for college admission and independence from parents, resulting in their frequent engagement in relatively risky activities without parents’ supervision. Correspondingly, an increment of physical activity-related injury (PARI) can be expected. Objective This study, funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (No. 31640038), was designed to investigate the epidemic and explore risk factors of PARI among Chinese university students via a multi-center survey. Methods By the method of cluster sampling, students graded 1–3 from eight universities in four Chinese cities (namely Shantou [Guangdong], Jinan [Shandong], Xi’an [Shanxi] and Nanchang [Jiangxi]) were selected and invited to complete the online questionnaire during March and April, 2017. The questionnaire was comprised of basic characteristics, physical activity (PA) involvement, sleep duration, and PARI episodes happened in the past 12 months. The multivariate logistic regression was used to estimate risk factors for PARI. Findings Of 5341 participants, 1293 suffered from PARI in the past 12 months, with an overall rate of 24.2% (males: 26.2%, females: 23.2%). More than one fifth of the injured (22.9%) sustained PARI at least three episodes. Over half of the injured (57.3%) experienced a withdrawal time of PA and nearly two fifth (39.6%) received medical treatment owing to PARI. Frequent PA participation, including vigorous-intensity and moderate-intensity, with longer duration would elevate risk for injury. Males, sports team members, and those with diagnosed chronic conditions were also at higher risks. Conclusion and policy implications PARI was prevalent among Chinese university students. Being physically active would increase risk for injury. The above data provide insights that focused and effective injury-intervention approaches should be implemented in university students. Safety issues should also be emphasized when promoting PA to the public to reduce PARI occurrence.

BACKGROUND Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) represent a common occupational problem for healthcare workers throughout the world. However, few epidemiological studies have investigated the effect of psychosocial factors on WMSDs among different Chinese occupational groups. AIMS To assess the prevalence of WMSDs and psychosocial risk factors contributing to them among miners and teachers in China. METHODS WMSDs were assessed in 500 teachers and 500 miners using the modified Chinese version of the Standardized Nordic Questionnaire and the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to estimate the associations between psychosocial factors and WMSDs. RESULTS There was a 73% participation rate. During a 12-month period, the prevalence of WMSDs among teachers and miners was comparable (72% and 78%, respectively), but miners had a higher prevalence of WMSD-related absence. Multivariate analyses indicated stronger associations between high job demands and upper limbs (odds ratio [OR] 3.05, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.67-5.58), neck and shoulder (OR 1.82, 95% CI: 1.05-3.16) and lower limbs (OR 1.97, 95% CI: 1.12-3.49) symptoms among miners. Low job satisfaction was related to low back (OR 2.40, 95% CI: 1.42-4.07), neck and shoulder (OR 2.18, 95% CI: 1.26-3.78) and lower limb (OR 1.69, 95% CI: 1.01-2.89) symptoms among teachers. CONCLUSIONS We found that WMSDs in the two populations presented different characteristics associated with their occupational features. This study provides further evidence that WMSDs occur commonly in both miners and school teachers in China.

Background Musculoskeletal disorders represent one of the most common and most costly occupational health problems in both developed and developing countries. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of occupational health education and ergonomic training on awareness, attitude and behavior of work-related musculoskeletal disorders among teachers. Methods A self-controlled longitudinal study with pre/post design was used to evaluate the effects of intervention among school teachers from the 21st of June, 2010 to the 21st of August, 2011. Choosing a cluster random sampling method, 350 (70.0% response rate (350/500)) teachers from four schools were assigned to receive eight weeks of intervention (participatory ergonomic training and occupational health education). Evaluations focused on teachers who participated in both pre- and post-questionnaires. Two post-tests were then administered to the participants to identify changes at six and 12 months after intervention. Results The follow-up rate was 93.7% (328/350) at six months after intervention, and 90.9% (319/350) at 12 months after intervention. After the intervention, the awareness rate, attitude and health behavior improved. It is well known that the immunity of the patients with malignant tumors decrease significantly. It is possible that the risk of virus infection in patients with cancer is much higher than that of the healthy population. In this study, we have analyzed the prevalence of parvovirus B19 (B19) infection in adult cancer patients. B19 viral DNA was examined by nested PCR from blood samples of the cancer patients (65 men and 48 women) with a mean age of 61.4±11.4 years old from September to November 2010. A group of 800 healthy blood donors served as the control group. The prevalence percentage of B19 infection in adult cancer patients was 46.0% compared to that in healthy blood donors were 4.5%. There were big differences between malignant tumors group and normal controls. The results showed B19 DNA commonly exists in cancer patients serum. Thus, the patients with cancer should avoid contact with people who are infected with B19 virus and the healthy population also should prevent themselves from infection of this virus from the patients with cancer.

Human bocavirus (HBoV) was first discovered in 2005 in nasopharyngeal aspirates of children with respiratory tract infection. To further investigate functions of NS1 of the HBoV, we need badly the NS1 antibody, therefore, we used a prokaryotic expression system pMAL-c2x vector for the production of NS1 as a fusion protein with maltose binding protein (MBP). The target fusion protein which exhibited a strong reaction with anti-MBP antibody was purified by Amylose affinity chromatography to immunize the New Zealand white rabbit for preparing the corresponding antibody. The titer of the produced antibody was measured by ELISA. It was found by using Western blot analysis that polyclonal antibodies were specific against both the NS1 and MBP.

Background School teachers represent an occupational group among which there appears to be a high prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs). Epidemiological data on WMSDs in Chinese teachers are limited. Objective To investigate the prevalence of and associated factors for WMSDs among school teachers. Methods In a cross-sectional study of teachers from seven schools, the prevalence of WMSDs during the 12-month period was assessed according to the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire. Results The response rate was 85.0% (893/1050). 59.5% reported at least one WMSDs. The 1 year prevalence of WMSDs of the neck, shoulder, low back, wrist/hand, elbow, and knee amongst teachers were 42.0, 35.9, 45.6, 20.9, 12.3 and 22.6%, respectively. The prevalence of WMSDs in the senior middle school teachers was significantly higher than that in the primary school and junior middle school teachers. Uncomfortable back support was associated with low back (OR 1.62, 95% CI 1.13 to 2.32), neck/shoulder (OR 1.77, 95% CI 1.23 to 2.55), elbow (OR 2.17, 95% CI 1.28 to 3.66) and knee pain (OR 1.98, 95% CI 1.30 to 2.03). Prolonged static posture had the strongest association with neck/shoulder (OR 2.25, 95% CI 1.56 to 3.24), wrist/hand (OR 2.33, 95% CI 1.46 to 3.71) and knee pain (OR 2.14 95% CI 1.360 to 3.37). Prolonged sitting was also associated with WMSDs at most sites. Posture characterised by twisting was associated with low back pain alone. Significance WMSDs are common among teachers. There were strong associations with occupational factors.
