Purpose of review The recent developments and clinical applications of natural orifice translumenal endoscopic surgery (NOTES)-procedures and technologies are going to be presented. Recent findings In experimental as well as clinical settings, NOTES-procedures are predominantly performed in hybrid technique. Current experimental studies focus on the implementation of new surgical approaches as well as on the training of procedures. One emphasis in the clinical application is transrectal and transanal interventions. Transanal total mesorectal excision is equivalent to laparoscopic procedures but with the benefit of an even less invasive access. Transvaginal cholecystectomy can achieve results that are comparable to surgeries that are performed with laparoscopic techniques alone. An analysis of the German NOTES-Register concerning appendectomies as well as the national performance of NOTES-interventions in Switzerland is presented. Apart from intraabdominal approaches, several centers proclaim transoral thyroidectomies and transoral mediastinoscopies. Summary NOTES-procedures are performed in animal experiments as well as in clinical setting although with less frequency. At this time, hybrid techniques using rigid instruments are mainly applied.

Gastroenterology ,Surgery - Abstract

5. Exhibiting Antifascism: Ravensbrück and the Ambivalences of East German Commemoration, 1945-1989

- Abstract
This thesis examines the political messages enshrined in and transmitted by the Ravensbrück women's concentration camp memorial in the former German Democratic Republic between 1945 and 1989. I argue that the ideology displayed at the site was the product of contestation and streamlining during the 1950s between the regime and intellectuals. Initially after the war, the memorial practices at the site varied and were not overtly political. By 1959, the regime successfully monopolized and instrumentalized the history of the camp, setting in stone an official narrative that upheld the legitimacy of the East German state but excluded the voices of the vast majority of victims. However, a subjective antifascism that was at odds with the master narrative pushed for a pluralization of public memory, particularly in the 1980s. Thus, a wider range of victim groups, hitherto ignored or marginalized, were accommodated room next to the glorified communist prisoners.

6. Currency competition - Hayek revisited

Schneider, Peter Norbert
- Abstract
The idea of currency competition is the most innovative and controversial proposal about an alteration of the current monetary system. However, the intellectual creator of this idea, Friedrich August Hayek, combined often an economic analysis and a more or less pamphlet-like description of the political process. Therefore the thesis tries to revisit Hayek’s idea and focus on the economic implications and effects. The first part of the thesis examines the current financial system and stresses the relevance of its institutions money, financial intermediation and central banking. The next part is dedicated to a brief examination on inflation whose avoidance forms the starting point in Hayek’s considerations. The main part develops a typology of currency competition and analyses their prospects in the current financial system. The thesis closes with perspectives on a possible future of monetary policy with currency competition which is a viable alternative.

9. Representations of Hecke Algebras of finite groups with BN-Pairs of classical type

- Abstract
Let G be a finite group with BN-pair and Coxeter system (W, R). Let A be the generic ring corresponding to (W, R) in the sense of Tits, defined over the polynomial ring D = Q[u[sub r], r ε R]. Let k be any field of characteristic zero. For the homomorphism φ : D —> k defined by φ(u[sub r]) = q[sub r], q[sub r] the index parameters of G, the specialzed algebra Aφ,[sub k] is isomorphic to the Hecke algebra H[sub k](G, B) of G with respect to a Borel subgroup B of G, while for the specialization defined by φ(u[sub r]) = 1, r ε R, Aφ,[sub k] is isomorphic to the group algebra kW. As G the Hecke algebra H[sub k](G, B) affords the induced representation 1[sup G sub B], the G irreducible representations of G appearing in 1[sup G sub B] can be obtained from the representations of H[sub k](G, B). In this thesis, we obtain all the irreducible representations, defined over the quotient field of D, of the generic ring corresponding to a Coxeter system of classical type. The method employed involves a generalization of Young's construction of the semi-normal matrix representations of the symmetric group. We also obtain an explicit formula for the generic degree of these representations in terms of the hook lengths of Young diagrams. Thus the degrees of all the irreducible constituents of 1[sup G sub B] are obtained for the families of Chevalley groups A[sub l](q), B[sub l](q), A[sup 1 sub 2l](q²), A[sup 1 sub 2l-1](q²), D[sup 1 sub l](q²) and for D[sub l](q), l odd. Also, most of the degrees are obtained for D[sub l](q), l even.
