Purpose To explore the role of fully hybrid 68Ga-DOTATOC PET/MR imaging and radiomic parameters in predicting histopathological prognostic factors in patients with pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours (PanNETs) undergoing surgery. Methods One hundred eighty-seven consecutive 68Ga-DOTATOC PET/MRI scans (March 2018–June 2020) performed for gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumour were retrospectively evaluated; 16/187 patients met the eligibility criteria ( 68Ga-DOTATOC PET/MRI for preoperative staging of PanNET and availability of histological data). PET/MR scans were qualitatively and quantitatively interpreted, and the following imaging parameters were derived: PET-derived SUVmax, SUVmean, somatostatin receptor density (SRD), total lesion somatostatin receptor density (TLSRD), and MRI-derived apparent difusion coefcient (ADC), arterial and late enhancement, necrosis, cystic degeneration, and maximum diameter. Additionally, frst-, second-, and higher-order radiomic parameters were extracted from both PET and MRI scans. Correla tions with several PanNETs’ histopathological prognostic factors were evaluated using Spearman’s coefcient, while the area under the curve (AUC) of the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to evaluate parameters’ predictive performance. Results Primary tumour was detected in all 16 patients (15/16 by 68Ga-DOTATOC PET and 16/16 by MRI). SUVmax and SUVmean resulted good predictors of lymphnodal (LN) involvement (AUC of 0.850 and 0.783, respectively). Second-order radiomic parameters GrayLevelVariance and HighGrayLevelZoneEmphasis extracted from T2 MRI demonstrated signifcant correlations with LN involvement (adjusted p=0.009), also showing good predictive performance (AUC=0.992). Conclusion This study demonstrates the role of the fully hybrid PET/MRI tool for the synergic function of imaging param eters extracted by the two modalities and highlights the potentiality of imaging and radiomic parameters in assessing histo pathological features of PanNET aggressiveness.

To determine the accuracy of preoperative imaging, including contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CE-CT), endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), and 68 Gallium-DOTATOC positron emission tomography ( 68 Ga-DOTATOC PET), in identifying nodal metastases (N+) in sporadic nonfunctioning pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (NF-PanNETs).An accurate preoperative identification of N+ in NF-PanNETs is critical for surgical planning. The accuracy of different imaging techniques in detecting lymph node (LN) metastases in NF-PanNETs has been poorly investigated.All consecutive patients undergoing surgery for sporadic NF-PanNETs (2018-2021) were enrolled in a prospective study (DETECTYON; NCT03918759). The accuracy of preoperative imaging techniques in detecting N+ was assessed through sensitivity, specificity positive and negative predictive values.Overall, 100 patients with NF-PanNETs underwent CE-CT, EUS, and 68 Ga-DOTATOC PET before pancreatic resection. LN metastases were found in 42 cases (42%). Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of different imaging techniques were 26%, 95%, 79%, 64% for CE-CT, 19%, 98%, 89%, 63% for EUS, and 12%, 95%, 63%, 60% for 68 Ga-DOTATOC PET, respectively. Radiologic tumor size4 cm and the presence of radiologic N+ at ≥1 imaging were independent predictors of N+ at pathology. The identification of N+ at ≥1 imaging technique was associated with a higher number of positive LNs compared with negative imaging (4 vs 2) ( P =0.012).CE-CT, EUS, and 68 Ga-DOTATOC PET are poorly sensitive in predicting nodal status in NF-PanNETs despite a high specificity.

Purpose of Review Biodiversity is one of the most important features of forest ecosystems. One of the goals of Sustainable Forest Management is to reduce biodiversity disturbance, which can occur as a consequence of timber harvesting. The aim of this review was to define which silvicultural systems and forest operations can have an influence on forest tree biodiversity by summarising the findings of nearly 60 papers published in the last ten years (2013–2022). Recent Findings In natural forest ecosystems characterised by a high level of structural complexity, such as uneven-aged tropical forests, selective logging and retention forestry are, in general, suitable forms of intervention that have a limited impact on tree biodiversity. Forest operations, in particular, should be of low intensity and try to simulate as much as possible small-scale natural disturbances. Thinning has proved to be a valid treatment for managing tree biodiversity. However, it is important to shape the magnitude of thinnings according to the management aims. Limited removal is recommended in interventions for maintaining the current structure, and more extensive removal is appropriate in cases when a change in species composition is expected, e.g. in the conversion of planted coniferous stands to uneven-aged mixed or broadleaved stands. In addition, coppicing is suitable for maintaining tree biodiversity due to its effectiveness in fostering the presence of light-demanding tree species. Findings show that it is important to establish the right rotation age, considering that an excessively short period between coppicing interventions can be detrimental to functional biodiversity. Skid trails and landing sites represent suitable areas for the initial establishment of natural regeneration. However, generally, the level of biodiversity on these sites declines with time as a consequence of soil compaction, thus highlighting the importance of the forest infrastructure network planning. Summary In uneven-aged tropical forests, selective logging and retention forestry are the most suitable options for maintaining tree biodiversity. Thinning and coppicing help to manage biodiversity, whilst intensive thinning helps to change species composition. Skid trails and landing sites can support natural regeneration. Recommendations and management options were developed, as well as possible future research directions. The authors recommend that future studies should investigate how much tree biodiversity depends on different levels of harvesting technology applied within the same silvicultural treatment.

This paper discusses methodological aspects by illustrating the fi rst products of a researchproject developed as part of a collaboration agreement between the DICAr - Departmentof Civil Engineering and Architecture of the University of Pavia and the enterprise GEAs.r.l. Archaeology, for the documentation of the archaeological excavations in the former SantaMargherita Institute in Pavia (Italy). The activities, carried out by the experimental laboratoriesDAda-LAB and PLAY, regarded the documentation of the archaeological evidences, datingback to the 4th century AD, brought to light by the interventions of conversion and remodellingof the historical and architectural complex. The need to produce documentation apparatus tosupport the excavation activities is boosted by the fragility of the archaeological site, apparentlymeant to disappear to allow space for the construction of an underground car park.The research aims to develop a methodology for the organisation of the data acquired in themultiple excavation campaigns, the production of databases useful to archaeologists for thechronological interpretation of the excavation, the detection of archaeological emergencies andthe development of an information system that combines models and databases. Since March2022, data acquisition campaigns have been undertaken to progressively survey the phases ofexcavations. Data sheets were then developed for stratigraphic units and deposit units, andan effective GIS system was developed to represent the complex nature of the site by makingclear the relationships between the stratigraphic units. The fi rst results of the research outline amethodological process that leads to the development of a digital ‘container’ in which it becomespossible to include the data collected during the campaign by reducing the time gap betweenacquisition, recording, processing and synthesis of information.

This research aims to define a low-cost replicable methodology for obtaining fast multiscale information models. The experiments carried out were conducted by researchers from Dada LAB and PLAY experimental Laboratories of the University of Pavia, Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture, on the case study of the irrigated landscape of the Pavia plain. The entire work process was developed according to a low-cost purpose, starting from fast acquisition activities with UAV instruments, to the processing of photogrammetric data, urban and detailed scale modelling with open-source software, to the census, filing, and computerisation of the model. The resulting product is configured as a multiscale reality-based information system. A census card is associated with each constituent element of the model (crops, canals, valuable hydraulic artefacts). Connection to the GIS platform allows the user to query the model. The result is a digital system oriented to facilitate the management of the agricultural and irrigation landscape, and to digitally document and preserve the heritage of historical hydraulic existing artefacts. Two different GIS platforms for structuring the information system were tested. The first involved a high-budget solution using ESRI ArcGIS Pro/ArcSCENE software, and the second involved using QGIS software, an Open-Source Geographic Information System, to develop an accessible information system without license fees, to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of low-cost processes.

There are little data on the epidemiological and clinical features of adult patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) in the different Italian regions, mainly derived from the absence of a national registry. This prevents correct interpretation of the disease burden.To assess the main clinical and epidemiological features of adult patients diagnosed with UC in Sardinia, Italy.We performed a multicenter, observational, cross-sectional study that included adult patients with UC enrolled in seven gastroenterology unit centers in Sardinia. Data were obtained from the patients' medical records and from a questionnaire administered at the inclusion visit.Four hundred and forty-two patients with UC were included. The median age at diagnosis was 39 years (interquartile range 28-48). After a median disease duration of 10 years, 53 patients experienced proximal extension of proctitis or left-sided colitis. Seventy-five patients developed extraintestinal manifestations. Nineteen patients (4.3%) developed cancer: two with colorectal cancer and seventeen with extracolonic cancers. Mesalazine (5-ASA) remains the mainstay of treatment for UC. Overall, 95 patients (21.5%) were treated with one or more biologic agents, whereas 15 patients (3.4%) underwent surgery, mostly colectomy.Our results provide important insights into the clinical and epidemiological features of patients with UC, and while waiting for a national Italian registry, present eligible data on the UC population in Sardinia.

PurposeThis study aims to investigate the heterogeneous results about the impact of temporary jobs on subsequent labour market performances and to provide policymakers with further information on the effects of temporary contracts under particular circumstances.Design/methodology/approachThe authors present a quantitative systematic review on the debate about the “stepping stone vs dead end” hypothesis related to the causal effect of temporary jobs on future labour market performances.FindingsAmong 78 observations from 64 articles, 32% support the hypothesis according to which temporary contracts are a port of entry into stable employment positions, 23% report ambiguous or mixed findings and the remaining 45% provide evidence in favour of the dead end hypothesis. The results from meta-regressions suggest that the stepping stone effect is more likely to emerge when self-selectivity issues are dealt with. The studies focussing on temporary work agency jobs and casual/seasonal jobs support more easily the dead end hypothesis. Finally, in more recent years and when the unemployment rate is larger, the dead end hypothesis is more likely to prevail.Originality/valueAlthough many studies have been published on this issue, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, there are no recent analytic economic surveys on the “stepping stone vs dead end” debate. The main contribution of this article is to fill this gap.

Purpose: To present the state-of-art of radiomics in the context of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PanNETs), with a focus on the methodological and technical approaches used, to support the search of guidelines for optimal applications. Furthermore, an up-to-date overview of the current clinical applications of radiomics in the field of PanNETs is provided. Methods: Original articles were searched on PubMed and Science Direct with specific keywords. Evaluations of the selected studies have been focused mainly on (i) the general radiomic workflow and the assessment of radiomic features robustness/reproducibility, as well as on the major clinical applications and investigations accomplished so far with radiomics in the field of PanNETs: (ii) grade prediction, (iii) differential diagnosis from other neoplasms, (iv) assessment of tumor behavior and aggressiveness, and (v) treatment response prediction. Results: Thirty-one articles involving PanNETs radiomic-related objectives were selected. In regard to the grade differentiation task, yielded AUCs are currently in the range of 0.7–0.9. For differential diagnosis, the majority of studies are still focused on the preliminary identification of discriminative radiomic features. Limited information is known on the prediction of tumors aggressiveness and of treatment response. Conclusions: Radiomics is recently expanding in the setting of PanNETs. From the analysis of the published data, it is emerging how, prior to clinical application, further validations are necessary and methodological implementations require optimization. Nevertheless, this new discipline might have the potential in assisting the current urgent need of improving the management strategies in PanNETs patients.

Deadwood is one of the main structural features of forest ecosystems and plays an important role in the nutrient cycle, in maintaining production and environmental heterogeneity, and acts as an indicator for assessing the biodiversity of forest ecosystems. This research was conducted with the aim of evaluating the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of deadwood according to the influence of forest accessibility indicators in a comparison between natural and recreational forests. The studied area was divided into three accessibility classes based on the slope gradient range, the slope direction towards the nearest road, the road type, and distance from the road. These classes were: Easy-recreational forest (RE-F), Medium-natural forest 1 (NA-F1), and Difficult-natural forest 2 (NA-F2). In each accessibility class, three transects (750 × 50 m) were established, and three deadwood groups (snag, log, and stump) were recorded along the transects and their volume was calculated. The results of the analysis of variance show that accessibility has a significant effect on the presence of deadwood. The number and volume of snags, logs and dead stumps per hectare was higher in NA-F2 than in NA-F1 and RE-F. In each of the investigated classes, logs and stumps had the highest and the lowest number and volume of deadwood per hectare, respectively. The snag longevity index (= log volume/snag volume) decreased with accessibility. NA F2 showed the greatest value, while REF and NA F1 were not significantly different from each other. The results show that decay classes DC2 in NA-F2 and DC3 in NA-F1 and RE-F had the highest percentage of decay frequency. Finally, the forest accessibility indicators have a significant effect on the quantity, quality and distribution of different groups of deadwood in the forest. This is related to the collection of deadwood by local people who remove deadwood with different levels of intensity.

Ionic supramolecular networks are attractive materials for technological applications with unique properties such as ionic conductivity, stimuli-responsiveness, recyclability, and self-healing. Herein, new semicrystalline supramolecular ionic networks are designed from fully biobased building blocks such as tartaric acid, phytic acid, sebacic acid, and a fatty dimer diamine (Priamine™ 1071). The combination of tartaric acid with Priamine™ 1071 results in a crystalline and brittle polymer, but its molecular regularity can be controlled by incorporating sebacic acid or phytic acid, affording tough materials with appropriate mechanical properties (elastic moduli ranging 19–42 MPa). Furthermore, the ionic polymers show network-to-liquid phase transitions between 75 and 127 °C, and in the liquid state, they were found to be miscible with a lithium-based deep eutectic solvent, yielding flexible and conductive eutectogels. Altogether, these dynamic networks could open new prospects for developing fully green soft ionic materials from their combination with other innovative and low-cost eutectic mixtures. Electrocardiography imaging (ECGi) is a non‐invasive inverse reconstruction procedure which employs body surface potential maps (BSPM) obtained from surface electrode array measurements to improve the spatial resolution and interpretability of conventional electrocardiography (ECG) for the diagnosis of cardiac dysfunction. ECGi currently lacks precision, which has prevented its adoption in clinical setups. The introduction of high‐density electrode arrays could increase ECGi reconstruction accuracy but is not attempted before due to manufacturing and processing limitations. Advances in multiple fields have now enabled the implementation of such arrays which poses questions on optimal array design parameters for ECGi. In this work, a novel conducting polymer electrode manufacturing process on flexible substrates is proposed to achieve high‐density, mm‐sized, conformable, long‐term, and easily attachable electrode arrays for BSPM with parameters optimally selected for ECGi applications. Temporal, spectral, and correlation analysis are performed on a prototype array demonstrating the validity of the chosen parameters and the feasibility of high‐density BSPM, paving the way for ECGi devices fit for clinical application.

Eutectogels are an emerging family of soft ionic materials alternative to ionic liquid gels and organogels, offering fresh perspectives for designing functional dynamic platforms in water-free environments. Herein, the first example of mixed ionic and electronic conducting supramolecular eutectogel composites is reported. A fluorescent glutamic acid-derived low-molecular-weight gelator (LMWG) was found to self-assemble into nanofibrillar networks in deep eutectic solvents (DES)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT): chondroitin sulfate dispersions. These dynamic materials displayed excellent injectability and self-healing properties, high ionic conductivity (up to 10−2 S cm−1), good biocompatibility, and fluorescence imaging ability. This set of features turns the mixed conducting supramolecular eutectogels into promising adaptive materials for bioimaging and electrostimulation applications. Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) play a key role for improving the implementation of sustainable forest management at local, regional, and global level. The ICT potential to easily exploit a wider and more up-to-date set of information on the economic, environmental, and so- cial value of forests is of relevant help for the daily work of technicians, land owners, and companies in boosting the efficiency and effectiveness of forest management. The concept of “Precision Forestry” (PF) was developed from the early 2000s, as a branch of precision farming or precision agriculture. PF includes the use of ICT, remote and proximal sensing technologies, and other devices to coordinate and control several processes on a spatial scale (“Precision”) for monitoring, planning, and managing forest resources (“Forestry”). The aim of this monography is to collect and describe some of the most important PF experiences applied or potential- ly useful for the Italian forestry sector. It may represent a reference guide for the stakeholders, such as forest owners, professional technicians, public administrators, and policy makers. The book includes eleven chapters reviewing the main tech- nological tools available in the Italian context and the most recent advances of ICT in forestry, also focusing on the strengths and weaknesses of their practical implementation. The opportunities and challenges of implementing PF meth- ods, practices and technologies are also discussed. In the first two chapters the precision forestry concept and its historical development are introduced. In the third chap- ter some basic elements of ICT, GIS, Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), remote/proximal sensing, and related technologies which are essential for a better compre- hension of PF applications are recalled. In chapter 4 recent advances in large scale forest inventories with a focus on mapping and on the spatial estimation of forest variables integrating field surveys and multisource re- motely sensed data are described. Current advancements in the acquisition of field information including Terrestrial La- ser Scanning (TLS), new digital dendrometers, tree-talkers, terrestrial cameras, and APP for portable devices such as smartphones or tablets for dendrometric tree measures and new citizen science applications to support quantitative and qualitative spatial estimation of forest variables over large areas (i.e., forest health, fuel types) are also presented. The chapter ends up with the description of some experiences in the implementation of Forest Information Systems in Italy to provide a simple open-access to such new generation of spatial forest information. In chapter 5 PF tools, instruments, and technologies to sup- port sustainable forest management are illustrated. APPs developed to acquire field plots data to simulate manage- ment operations, the application of photogrammetric tech- nologies from Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and TLS data for monitoring with high-spatial scale forest monitoring and for acquiring indicators at single tree level are presented. A de- tailed description of new user-friendly tools for forest roadplanning, design and construction, as well as forest opera- tion planning is also included. Precision forest tree farming (with particular reference to poplar cultivation), useful to promote and increase the prof- itability and sustainability of forest plantations within the Italian context is described in chapter 6. The innovation and enhancement within the supply chain of wood plantations (from planting to harvesting, including monitoring and identification of stress) by soil proximal sensing techniques, Early Warning Systems, and specific software are highlight- ed. Considering the even higher market demands, promoted by the large-scale planting programs for climate changes mit- igation and the demands for propagation material for en- vironmental recovery, innovative techniques and methods supported by ICT in the forest nursery sector are described in chapter 7. In chapter 8 available technologies related to precision har- vesting are analyzed and described taking into consideration the wood chain efficiency, by means of improved commu- nications between the owner/buyer and operators as well as among machineries used in forest operations, health and safety of forest operators, environmental impacts mitigation and recovery, and operators training. Advanced communi- cation systems and sensors for the exchange of data and information between machines, machine-equipments and/or machine-operators, teleoperations and automation are also described. Chapters 9 and 10 are related to wood products traceabil- ity, timber quality assessment as well as the technologies for the optimization of wood transformation processes. The concepts of wood product traceability and tracing, togeth- er with latest digital technologies for the identification and tracking of the logs (i.e., fingerprinting and RFID), are de- tailly reported. Chapter 11 is finally dedicated to the relationship between the EU policy framework and the digitalization process in both agricultural and forestry sectors. The book summarizes, under a proactive and homogeneous framework, PF methods, tools and technologies in relation with the digital transition of the Italian forestry sectors. The authors hope this book will be useful for improving the implementation of sustainable forest management practic- es at all levels in Italy, providing a comprehensive review useful for policy makers, technicians, forestry owners and students.

BACKGROUND Migrants from Africa are vulnerable to viral infections during their journey. METHODS Migrants who arrived in western Sicily were offered early screening for hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. A questionnaire was administered to evaluate risk factors, and antiviral therapy was offered to subjects with active infection. A multiple regression analysis and adjusted odds ratio were obtained to evaluate risk factors. RESULTS Overall, 2,639 of 2,751 (95.9%) migrants who arrived between 2015 and 2017 accepted screening and 1,911 (72.4%) completed the questionnaire. HBsAg was positive in 257 (9.7%) migrants, 24 (0.9%) were anti-HCV positive and 57 (2.2%) had HIV infection. The prevalence of HBV infection was higher in women (aOR 2.47,95%CI 1.90-3.20),p = 0.003) and in people who endured physical and/or sexual violence (aOR 2.24,95%CI 1.87-3.55,p

Aim To explore the potentiality of radiomics analysis, performed on 68Ga-DOTATOC and fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) PET/computed tomography (CT) images, in predicting tumour aggressiveness and outcome in patients candidate to surgery for pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (PanNENs). Patients and methods Retrospective study including 61 patients who underwent 68Ga-DOTATOC and 18F-FDG PET/CT before surgery for PanNEN. Semiquantitative variables [SUVmax and somatostatin receptor density (SRD) for 68Ga-DOTATOC PET; SUVmax and MTV for 18F-FDG PET] and texture features [intensity variability, size zone variability (SZV), zone percentage, entropy; homogeneity, dissimilarity and coefficient of variation (Co-V)] have been analysed to evaluate their possible role in predicting tumour characteristics. Principal component analysis (PCA) was firstly performed and then multiple regression analyses were performed by using the extracted principal components. Results Regarding 68Ga-DOTATOC PET, SZV, entropy, intensity variability and SRD were predictive for tumour dimension. Regarding 18F-FDG PET, intensity variability, SZV, homogeneity, SUVmax and MTV were predictive for tumour dimension. Four principal components were extracted from PCA: PC1 correlated with all 18F-FDG variables, while PC2, PC3 and PC4 with 68Ga-DOTATOC variables. PC1 was the only significantly predicting angioinvasion (P = 0.0222); PC4 was the only one significantly predicting lymph nodal involvement (P = 0.0151). Epidemiology; Health services; Viral hepatitis Epidemiologia; Serveis de salut; Hepatitis viral Epidemiología; Servicios de salud; Hepatitis viral Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a major public health threat for migrant populations in Spain and efforts to scale up testing are needed to reach the WHO elimination targets. The Hepatitis B Virus Community Screening and Vaccination in Africans (HBV-COMSAVA) study aims to use point-of-care testing and simplified diagnostic tools to identify, link to care, or vaccinate African migrants in Barcelona during the COVID-19 pandemic. From 21/11/20 to 03/07/2021, 314 study participants were offered HBV screening in a community clinic. Rapid tests for HBsAg screening were used and blood samples were collected with plasma separation cards. Patients received results and were offered: linkage to specialist care; post-test counselling; or HBV vaccination in situ. Sociodemographic and clinical history were collected and descriptive statistics were utilized. 274 patients were included and 210 (76.6%) returned to receive results. The HBsAg prevalence was 9.9% and 33.2% of people had evidence of past resolved infection. Overall, 133 required vaccination, followed by post-test counselling (n = 114), and linkage to a specialist (n = 27). Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, by employing a community-based model of care utilizing novel simplified diagnostic tools, HBV-COMSAVA demonstrated that it was possible to diagnose, link to care, and vaccinate African migrants in community-based settings. Microelimination targets specific subpopulations and/or geographic settings for hepatitis C virus (HCV) elimination. This review reports on global HCV microelimination literature published from 2013 to 2020. Data were extracted from publications to report a score based on the four key components defining microelimination. Sustained virologic response (SVR) and treatment initiation proportions were calculated for each manuscript and grouped means of these estimates were compared depending on microelimination score and care setting. A total of 83% of the studies were from high-income settings and mainly included people who use drugs or those incarcerated. Among manuscripts, 18 had “low” microelimination scores, 11 had “high” scores, and the differences in mean proportion who initiated treatment and achieved SVR between low and high score groups were statistically significant. Microelimination can be a useful complementary strategy for driving engagement in HCV treatment and cure. Our analysis suggests that adhering to more of the core microelimination components can improve outcomes. This study is registered with Prospero, registration identification: CRD42020175211.

INTRODUCTION Radiomics has been proven effective for the characterisation of primary prostate cancer (PCa).1,2 However, the limited interpretability of the proposed models represents one of the major limitations in this field.3,4 This study investigated 68Ga-prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) PET radiomics for the prediction of post-surgical International Society of Urological Pathology (ISUP) grade in patients with primary PCa, ensuring model interpretability. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty-seven patients with PCa were examined with 68Ga-PSMA PET at the authors’ institution. Those patients were enrolled in this study prior to radical prostatectomy. Images were acquired using either PET/MRI or PET/CT. ISUP grade was available at both biopsy and radical prostatectomy for all patients. A radiologist manually segmented the whole prostate on PET images using the co-registered CT or MRI for anatomical localisation on 3D Slicer software (Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts, USA).5 The whole prostate was used as volume of interest (VOI) to avoid the limitations of radiomics for small volumes.6 VOIs were normalised, resampled, and discretised. A total of 103 image biomarker standardisation initiative-compliant, radiomic features (RF) were extracted using PyRadiomics (Python Software Foundation, Beaverton, Oregon, USA).7 RFs were harmonised with the ComBat method8 to control for the scanner effect, and selected using the minimum redundancy maximum relevance algorithm. Combinations of the four most relevant RFs were used to train 12 radiomics machine learning models for the prediction of post-surgical ISUP ≥4 versus ISUP 0.05). See Table 1 for a detailed report of all the generated models’ performance. CONCLUSION These findings support the role of 68Ga-PSMA PET radiomics for the accurate and non-invasive prediction of post-surgical ISUP grade. Future multicentre studies will be needed to establish with certainty the accuracy and reproducibility of the radiomic signature proposed here.

In this study, we used single nucleotide polymorphism and comparative genomic hybridization array to study DNA copy number changes and loss of heterozygosity for 28 patients affected by Sézary syndrome (SS), a rare form of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL). Our data identified, further confirming previous studies, recurrent losses of 17p13.2-p11.2 and 10p12.1-q26.3 occurring in 71% and 68% of cases, respectively; common gains were detected for 17p11.2-q25.3 (64%) and chromosome 8/8q (50%). Moreover, we identified novel genomic lesions recurring in >30% of tumors: loss of 9q13-q21.33 and gain of 10p15.3-10p12.2. Individual chromosomal aberrations did not show a significant correlation with prognosis; however, when more than three recurrent chromosomal alterations (gain or loss) were considered, a statistical association was observed using Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. Integrating mapping and transcriptional data, we were able to identify a total of 113 deregulated transcripts in aberrant chromosomal regions that included cancer-related genes such as members of the NF-κB pathway (BAG4, BTRC, NKIRAS2, PSMD3, and TRAF2) that might explain its constitutive activation in CTCL. Matching this list of genes with those discriminating patients with different survival times, we identify several common candidates that might exert critical roles in SS, such as BUB3 and PIP5K1B. Altogether, our study confirms and maps more precisely the regions of gain and loss and, combined to transcriptional profiles, suggests a novel set of genes of potential interest in SS. Firewood extraction by mule forwarding is still common in oak coppices in Central and Southern Italy. This is due to the scarce presence of aerial extraction systems such as cable yarders. Considering the importance of forest soil for all ecosystem services, the evaluation of the disturbance that a given extraction system has on the forest soil is a fundamental aspect in the framework of sustainable forest management. Therefore, this study was developed to assess the disturbance caused to the physicochemical and biological features of soil and to coppice after mule logging according to the standards of silvicultural treatment, as well as the recovery time needed after the logging intervention. Four cutting blocks located in Central Italy represented the study area, one cutting block represented the unharvested control, while the others were logged 3 years (CB-2019), 8 years (CB-2014) and 10 years (CB-2012) prior to the field surveys. In each harvested cutting block the soil was subdivided into disturbed soil (DIST—mule trails) and low disturbance soil (LD—area within the harvested cutting block not affected by mule passage). This experimental design assessed the disturbance caused by logging operations by mules (DIST soil) and the silvicultural treatment (LD soil) to soil physicochemical (bulk density, penetration resistance, shear resistance, and soil organic matter) and biological properties (soil microarthropod community evaluated with the QBS-ar index). The results revealed a significant disturbance in the mule trails for all the investigated variables. The disturbance was particularly strong for the QBS-ar index, with values which were lower than half of those of the control area. Furthermore, no recovery process was evident even after 10 years from the logging interventions. Instead, values of the various parameters became worse with time after harvesting. On the other hand, no marked disturbance was revealed in LD soil, except for a significant decrease in soil organic matter. Although this is a preliminary evaluation that needs to be confirmed with further study, this trial suggested that mule logging cannot be considered a fully low-impact approach to forest operations and that studies with a longer time span after harvesting are needed to assess the recovery process in the mule trails.

Reforestation with native and non-native tree species is one of the most effective strategies to cope with climate change, and is also the most effective management method for solving soil erosion problems in degraded forests around the world. The current research investigates three skid trails, which were planted with three species in the clearcutting areas, in comparison with a natural forest of hornbeam (CB; Carpinus betulus L.) and velvet maple (AV; Acer velutinum Boiss.) and degraded land without trees (DL), as well as evaluates the recovery of soil characteristics in the skid trails in response to the planting of native species, including black alder (Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn.), and non-native species, including eastern cottonwood (Populus deltoides L.) and Italian cypress (Cupressus sempervirens L. var. horizontalis (Mill.) Gord.) in a mid-term period of 25 years, in the Hyrcanian forests in northern Iran. Significantly higher litter nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) were detected in the plantation of black alder (AG), whereas the lowest values were measured under the DL treatment. Soil physio-chemical properties significantly differed among treatments, except silt content. Among the soil chemical properties, N storage and available nutrients of P and K under the black alder plantation were fully restored as compared to the value observed at the hornbeam and velvet maple (CB-AV) stand over a 25-year period after soil disturbance and planting. Over a 25-year period after logging operations, soil biological and microbial properties of carbon and nitrogen, and enzyme activity in the black alder plantation were partially recovered, but these values have not returned to pre-harvest level at the CB-AV treatment as control. Overall, these results suggested that black alder had greater positive effects on the recovery of soil properties than other trees due to the faster litter decomposition as a N-fixing species, and its labile substrate with low organic C and high N concentration. Therefore, black alder reforestation should be increase in future ecosystem restoration in the area influenced by logging operations.

IntroductionState of the art artificial intelligence (AI) models have the potential to become a “one-stop shop” to improve diagnosis and prognosis in several oncological settings. The external validation of AI models on independent cohorts is essential to evaluate their generalization ability, hence their potential utility in clinical practice. In this study we tested on a large, separate cohort a recently proposed state-of-the-art convolutional neural network for the automatic segmentation of intraprostatic cancer lesions on PSMA PET images.MethodsEighty-five biopsy proven prostate cancer patients who underwent 68Ga PSMA PET for staging purposes were enrolled in this study. Images were acquired with either fully hybrid PET/MRI (N = 46) or PET/CT (N = 39); all participants showed at least one intraprostatic pathological finding on PET images that was independently segmented by two Nuclear Medicine physicians. The trained model was available at https://gitlab.com/dejankostyszyn/prostate-gtv-segmentation and data processing has been done in agreement with the reference work.ResultsWhen compared to the manual contouring, the AI model yielded a median dice score = 0.74, therefore showing a moderately good performance. Results were robust to the modality used to acquire images (PET/CT or PET/MRI) and to the ground truth labels (no significant difference between the model’s performance when compared to reader 1 or reader 2 manual contouring).DiscussionIn conclusion, this AI model could be used to automatically segment intraprostatic cancer lesions for research purposes, as instance to define the volume of interest for radiomics or deep learning analysis. However, more robust performance is needed for the generation of AI-based decision support technologies to be proposed in clinical practice.
