In the Maritime Alps (NW Italy - SE France), the Middle Triassic-Berriasian platform carbonates of the Provençal Domain are locally affected by an intense hydrothermal dolomitization. This dolomitization resulted from a large-scale hydrothermal circulation related to deep-rooted faults, and is indirect evidence of a significant earliest Cretaceous fault activity in this part of the Alpine Tethys European palaeomargin. New carbonate U-Pb dating and geochemical (stable isotope and noble gases on inclusion-hosted water, 87Sr/86Sr, clumped isotopes) data allowed a better understanding of the timing and mechanisms of the hydrothermal circulation. Hydrothermal fluids probably originated from seawater, which was involved in a deep circulation within the underlying crystalline basement, undergoing heating to more than 200°C and substantial compositional modification by prolonged interaction with basement rocks. Thin cement rims rich in carbonaceous material, locally alternated with hydrothermal dolomite cements, are interpreted as remnants of ephemeral microbial communities that could colonize the upper part of hydrothermal conduits during periods of reduced hot fluid flow and contemporaneous downward seawater infiltration.

A field, petrographic and geochemical study of two Triassic&ndash, Jurassic carbonate successions from the Maritime Alps, SE France, indicates that dolomitization is related to episodic fracturing and the flow of hydrothermal fluids. The mechanism governing hydrothermal fluids has been documented with the best possible spatio-temporal resolutions specifying the migration and trapping of hydrothermal fluids as a function of depth. This is rarely reported in the literature, as it requires a very wide range of disciplines from facies analysis (petrography) to very diverse and advanced chemical methods (elemental analysis, isotope geochemistry, microthermometry). In most cases, our different recognized diagenetic phases were mechanically separated on a centimetric scale and analyzed separately. The wide range of the &delta, 18OVPDB and 87Sr/86Sr values of diagenetic carbonates reflect three main diagenetic realms, including: (1) the formation of replacive dolomites (Type I) in the eogenetic realm, (2) formation of coarse to very coarse crystalline saddle dolomites (Types II and Type III) in the shallow to deep burial mesogenetic realm, respectively, and (3) telogenetic formation of a late calcite cement (C1) in the telogenetic realm due to the uplift incursion of meteoric waters. The Triassic dolomites show a lower 87Sr/86Sr ratio (mean = 0.709125) compared to the Jurassic dolomites (mean = 0.710065). The Jurassic calcite (C1J) shows lower Sr isotopic ratios than the Triassic C1T calcite. These are probably linked to the pulses of the seafloor&rsquo, s hydrothermal activity and to an increase in the continental riverine input during Late Cretaceous and Early Cenozoic times. This study adds a new insight into the burial diagenetic conditions during multiple hydrothermal flow events.

The Provençal and Dauphinois Mesozoic successions cropping out at the southeastern margin of the Argentera Massif (Maritime Alps, NW Italy) were deposited at the transition between the Provençal platform and the Dauphinois basin, marked in the study area by a partly preserved Mesozoic palaeoescarpment. These successions show important lateral variations occurring over relatively short distances, probably related to syndepositional tectonics. Different stratigraphic intervals of the pelagic-hemipelagic Dauphinois succession contain resedimented deposits, made up of both intra- and extrabasinal material, which provide a twofold evidence of syndepositional tectonics indicating both tectonically-triggered gravitational processes and a tectonically-driven evolution of the source areas. Two stages of syndepositional tectonics have been recognized: the first in the earliest Cretaceous, which is related to the deposition of carbonate breccias in the Dauphinois succession and to hydrothermal dolomitization of the Middle Triassic-Jurassic Provençal carbonates, and the second in the Late Cretaceous, which triggered the deposition of different detrital lithozones in the Upper Cretaceous Puriac Limestone. The present article illustrates a straightforward case of hydrothermal dolomitization, affecting Jurassic platform limestones of the Provencal and Subbrianconnais Domains (Maritime Alps, North-Western Italy). Dolomitized bodies are randomly distributed within the host limestone, and are commonly associated with dolomite vein networks and tabular bodies of dolomite-cemented breccias discordant with respect to bedding. Main dolomite types are a finely to medium-crystalline replacive dolomite and a coarsely-crystalline saddle dolomite occurring both as replacive and as cement. Stratigraphic constraints indicate that dolomitization occurred during the Cretaceous, in a shallow burial context, and was due to the circulation of hot fluids (temperature about 200 °C, as indicated by fluid inclusion microthermometry) through faults and related fracture networks. Hydrothermal dolomitization therefore indirectly documents a Cretaceous fault activity in the Maritime Alps segment of the European Tethyan passive margin.

In the Maritime Alps (north-west Italy - south-east France), the Middle Triassic-lowermost Cretaceous platform carbonates of the Provençal Domain locally show an intense dolomitization. Dolomitized bodies, irregularly shaped and variable in size from some metres to hundreds of metres, are associated with tabular bodies of dolomite-cemented breccias, cutting the bedding at a high angle, and networks of dolomite veins. Field and petrographic observations indicate that dolomitization was a polyphase process, in which episodes of hydrofracturing and host-rock dissolution, related to episodic expulsion of overpressured fluids through faults and fracture systems, were associated with phases of host-rock dolomitization and void cementation. Fluid inclusion analysis indicates that dolomitizing fluids were relatively hot (170 to 260°C). The case study represents an outstanding example of a fossil hydrothermal system, which significantly contributes to the knowledge of such dolomitization systems in continental margin settings. The unusually favourable stratigraphic framework allows precise constraint of the timing of dolomitization (earliest Cretaceous) and, consequently, direct evaluation of the burial setting of dolomitization which, for the upper part of the dolomitized succession, was very shallow or even close to the surface. The described large-scale hydrothermal system was probably related to deep-rooted faults, and provides indirect evidence of a significant earliest Cretaceous fault activity in this part of the Alpine Tethys European palaeomargin.

The 1:25,000 geological map of the Entracque–Colle di Tenda area covers an area of about 130 km2 in the Italian Maritime Alps, between the Gesso and Vermenagna valleys. The map area is of great relevance since the Alpine units of this region sampled a geological nodal point in the Mesozoic, at the transition between two different sedimentation domains of the Alpine Tethys European palaeomargin (the Dauphinois basin to the NW and the Provençal platform to the SE). During the Cenozoic, this palaeogeographic hinge was progressively incorporated along multiple shear zone systems developed at the southern termination of the Western Alps arc.

The 1:10,000 geological map here presented extends over about 32 km2 around the Col de Braus pass in the Maritime Alps (SE France). This area has attracted the attention of geologists since the late eighteenth century due to superb exposures of the Jurassic-Cretaceous Provençal succession, and has become a classic geological locality continuously studied until the present day. In this area, Early Cretaceous synsedimentary tectonics is evidenced by important lateral thickness and facies variations. This sector is presently placed at the western termination of a large structural domain extending from the westernmost Ligurian Alps into the French-Italian Maritime Alps, thus representing a key-area for understanding the structural setting of this part of the Western Alps.
