Recent studies report that stem cell therapies have been applied successfully to patients, This has increased anticipations that this regeneration strategy could be a potential method to treat a wide range of intractable diseases some day. Stem cells offer new prospects for the treatment of incurable diseases and for tissue regeneration and repairation because of their unique biological properties. Angiogenesis a key process in tissue regeneration and repairation. Vascularization of organs is one of the main challenges hindering the clinical application of engineered tissues. Efficient production of engineered vascular grafts and vascularized organs is of critical importance for regenerative medicine. In this review, we focus on the types of stem cells that are widely used in tissue engineering and regeneration, as well as their application of these stem cells in the construction of tissue-engineered vascular grafts and vascularization of tissue-engineered organs.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) or percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) are commonly employed for Kummell’s disease in stages II–III; however, these techniques produce some complications. OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical efficacy and imaging results of percutaneous vertebroplasty + bone cement-augmented short-segment pedicle screw fixation (PSPVP) versus transpedicular intracorporeal bone grafting + pedicle screw fixation (PSIBG) in the treatment of stage II–III Kummell’s disease. METHODS: A total of 69 patients admitted between November 2017 and March 2021 were included in this study; 36 of these were treated with PSPVP, and 33 were treated with PSIBG. Patients in the two groups were compared in terms of perioperative, follow-up, and imaging data. RESULTS: No statistically significant differences were found between the two groups in terms of operation duration (P > 0.05). However, the PSPVP group was superior to the PSIBG group in terms of incision length, intraoperative blood loss, and length of stay (P 0.05). There were also no statistically significant differences in the VAS score, ODI index, kyphosis Cobb angle, and wedge angle of the affected vertebra between the two groups at corresponding time points (P > 0.05). Objectives: In this study, we examine influencing factors and demand forecast of single disease demand in Chinese public hospitals. Methods: We conducted a preliminary screening of the literature, according to a literature search strategy and inclusion and exclusion criteria. Related Chinese and English articles between 2000 and 2022 were searched in the Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, PubMed, and Elsevier databases and Google Scholar. The Jadad literature scoring mechanism was used, and Stata/SE version 12.0 software was used to perform a meta-analysis of the effect size of literature statistics. The outcome index was the 2-week visit rate. Results: We included 13 articles for meta-analysis. Their combined effect size and 95% confidence interval for chronic disease, age, gender, economic factors, medical insurance form and education level were 3.43 (2.26, 5.51), 2.53 (1.74, 3.68), 1.3 (1.16, 1.46), 2.31 (1.16, 4.61), 3.2 (2.98, 3.45) and 1.35 (1.14, 1.6), respectively. Results revealed that for patients with chronic diseases, those>60 years of age and families with better economic conditions and higher levels of education correlated with a higher demand for medical services among families with medical insurance for urban residents. Conclusion: Using meta-analysis, we analyzed the factors that affect the demand for medical services in China. From demographic and economic factors, national medical insurance policies and residents' health status, we analyzed the relationship between patients with a single disease and other factors. With respect to the influence of medical service demand, relevant departments should take effective measures to increase medical service demand according to the influencing factor of the 2-week visit rate and simultaneously provide scientific theoretical guidance for medical reform.

In this study, titanate nanotubes (TNTs) were prepared through the hydrothermal method and then modified with γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH550) to obtain KTNTs with good dispersion properties. A KTNT–waterborne polyurethane (WPU) composite coating was prepared by blending KTNTs with WPU. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to characterize TNT compositions before and after modification. Thermogravimetric analysis and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were used to test the thermal stability and corrosion resistance of the composite coating. The results showed that KH550 was successfully connected to the TNT surface. This improved the thermal stability and corrosion resistance of the KTNT–WPU coatings. The fastest thermal decomposition rate for the 0.5% KTNT composite coating was 2%/min lower than that of the pure WPU coating. At the same time, the impedance of the composite coating could reach 7.58 × 107 Ω cm2, the corrosion current density was 3.20 × 10−9 A/cm2 and the corrosion inhibition rate reached 99.87%. The composite coating had an effective corrosion protection time of 120 h, and the protective effect of the coating weakened when the immersion time exceeded 360 h.

Background The Blumgart anastomosis has been established as one of the safest anastomoses for pancreas remnant reconstruction, with low rates of postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) and postoperative complications. However, how to make laparoscopic pancreaticoenterostomy easier and safer is still a subject to be discussed. Methods Data of patients undergoing laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy from April 2014 to December 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. Results 20 cases of half-invagination anastomosis (Group HI) and 26 cases of Cattell-warren anastomosis (Group CW) were included. Intraoperative blood loss, Operative time and Postoperative drainage tube placement time of Group HI was significantly less than those of Group CW. Patients of Clavien-Dindo grade III and above in Group HI was significantly less than Control Group. Group Incidence of POPF in Group HI was significantly lower than that in Group CW. No high-risk group emerged during Fistula risk score analytical phase, and the highest risk of moderate-risk group was pancreatic leakage. Respectively, incidence of pancreatic leakage in Group HI and Group CW was 7.7% and 46.67%, while incidence of Group HI was significantly lower than that in the Group CW. Conclusions The Blumgart-anastomosis based half-invagination pancreaticoenterostomy with better applicability to laparoscopy can effectively reduce the incidence of postoperative pancreatic leakage.

Here we report that lung-specific loss of function of the transcription factor Miz1 (c-Myc-interacting zinc finger protein-1) upregulates the pro-T-helper cell type 1 cytokine IL-12. Upregulation of IL-12 in turn stimulates a Th1 response, thereby counteracting T-helper cell type 2 response and preventing the allergic response in mouse models of house dust mite- and OVA (ovalbumin)-induced asthma. We report a simple and facile integration strategy of a laser source in passive photonic integrated circuits (PICs) by deterministically embedding semiconductor nanowires (NWs) in waveguides. InP NWs laid on a SiN slab are buried by a polymer layer which also acts as an electron-beam resist. With electron-beam lithography, hybrid polymer-SiN waveguides are formed with precisely embedded NWs. The lasing behavior of the waveguide-embedded NWs is confirmed, and more importantly, the NW lasing mode couples into the hybrid waveguide and forms an in-plane guiding mode. Multiple waveguide-embedded NW lasers are further integrated in complex photonic structures to illustrate that the waveguiding mode supplied by the NW lasers could be manipulated for on-chip signal processing, including power splitting and wavelength-division multiplexing. This integration strategy of an on-chip laser is applicable to other PIC platforms, such as silicon and lithium niobate, and the top cladding layer could be changed by depositing SiN or SiO

Two-dimensional (2D) materials, featuring distinctive electronic and optical properties and dangling-bond-free surfaces, are promising for developing high-performance on-chip photodetectors in photonic integrated circuits. However, most of the previously reported devices operating in the photoconductive mode suffer from a high dark current or a low responsivity. Here, we demonstrate a MoTe2p-i-n homojunction fabricated directly on a silicon photonic crystal (PC) waveguide, which enables on-chip photodetection with ultralow dark current, high responsivity, and fast response speed. The adopted silicon PC waveguide is electrically split into two individual back gates to selectively dope the top regions of the MoTe2 channel in p- or n-types. High-quality reconfigurable MoTe2 (p-i-n, n-i-p, n-i-n, p-i-p) homojunctions are realized successfully, presenting rectification behaviors with ideality factors approaching 1.0 and ultralow dark currents less than 90 pA. Waveguide-assisted MoTe2 absorption promises a sensitive photodetection in the telecommunication O-band from 1260 to 1340 nm, though it is close to MoTe2's absorption band-edge. A competitive photoresponsivity of 0.4 A/W is realized with a light on/off current ratio exceeding 104 and a record-high normalized photocurrent-to-dark-current ratio of 106 mW-1. The ultrasmall capacitance of p-i-n homojunction and high carrier mobility of MoTe2 promise a high dynamic response bandwidth close to 34.0 GHz. The proposed device geometry has the advantages of employing a silicon PC waveguide as the back gates to build a 2D material p-i-n homojunction directly and simultaneously to enhance light-2D material interaction. It provides a potential pathway to develop 2D material-based photodetectors, laser diodes, and electro-optic modulators on silicon photonic chips.

Pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PAAD) is a cancerous tumor with an extremely poor 5-year survival rate. The exploration of biomarkers for the diagnosis and treatment of PAAD is crucial in clinical practice. Krüppel-like factors (KLFs) are involved in a variety of biological functions in cells. According to multiple studies, KLF16 behave as an oncogene in prostate, breast and gastric cancers. However, no research has been done on the significance of KLF16 in PAAD.To explore the molecular mechanisms of KLF16 in PAAD.KLF16 was identified in the tumor specimens and normal tissues by GEPIA database and verified by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). Knockdown or exogenous expression of KLF16, combined withWe showed that KLF16 was highly expressed in PAAD patients based on the GEPIA database. KLF16 silencing suppressed while KLF16 overexpression promoted the malignant function of PAAD cells. Based on RNA sequencing, we discovered that KLF16 potentiated the expression of SMAD6 in PAAD cells. SMAD6 transcript abundance was increased and positively correlated with KLF16 expression in PAAD samples. In addition, inhibiting SMAD6 was able to mitigate the effects of KLF16 overexpression on PAAD cell processes, suggesting the importance of SMAD6 in the development of KLF16-triggered PAAD.KLF16/SMAD6 axis might be explored as a therapeutic target for PAAD therapy.

Biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) is used as a bone substitute and bone tissue repair material due to its better control over bioactivity and biodegradability. It is crucial to stabilize the implanted biomaterial while promoting bone ingrowth. However, a lack of standard experimental and theoretical protocols to characterize the physicochemical properties of BCP limits the optimization of its composition and properties. Computational simulations can help us better to learn BCP at a nanoscale level. Here, the Voronoi tessellation method was combined with simulated annealing molecular dynamics to construct BCP nanoparticle models of different sizes, which were used to understand the physicochemical properties of BCP (e.g., melting point, infrared spectrum, and mechanical properties). We observed a ∼20 to 30 Å layer of calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite at the HAP/β-TCP interface due to particle migration, which may contribute to BCP stability. The BCP model may stimulate further research into BCP ceramics and multiphasic ceramics. Moreover, our study may facilitate the optimization of compositions of BCP-based biomaterials.

Building a reliable relationship between the electronic structure of alloyed metallic catalysts and catalytic performance is important but remains challenging due to the interference from many entangled factors. Herein, a PdBi surface alloy structural model, by tuning the deposition rate of Bi atoms relative to the atomic interdiffusion rate at the interface, realizes a continuous modulation of the electronic structure of Pd. Using advanced X-ray characterization techniques, we provide a precise depiction of the electronic structure of the PdBi surface alloy. As a result, the PdBi catalysts show enhanced propene selectivity compared with the pure Pd catalyst in the selective hydrogenation of propyne. The prevented formation of saturated β-hydrides in the subsurface layers and weakened propene adsorption on the surface contribute to the high selectivity. Our work provides in-depth understanding of the electronic properties of surface alloy structure and underlies the study of the electronic structure-performance relationship in bimetallic catalysts.

We evaluated and compared humoral immune responses after inactivated coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination among naïve individuals, asymptomatically infected individuals, and recovered patients with varying severity. In this multicenter, prospective cohort study, blood samples from 666 participants were collected before and after 2 doses of inactivated COVID-19 vaccination. Among 392 severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2-naïve individuals, the seroconversion rate increased significantly from 51.8% (median antispike protein pan-immunoglobulins [S-Igs] titer: 0.8 U/ml) after the first dose to 96% (median S-Igs titer: 79.5 U/ml) after the second dose. Thirty-two percent of naïve individuals had detectable neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) against the original strain but all of them lost neutralizing activity against the Omicron variant. In 274 individuals with natural infection, humoral immunity was significantly improved after a single vaccine dose, with median S-Igs titers of 596.7, 1176, 1086.5, and 1828 U/ml for asymptomatic infections, mild cases, moderate cases, and severe/critical cases, respectively. NAb titers also improved significantly. However, the second dose did not substantially increase antibody levels. Although a booster dose is needed for those without infection, our findings indicate that recovered patients should receive only a single dose of the vaccine, regardless of the clinical severity, until there is sufficient evidence to confirm the benefits of a second dose.

At present, the choice of treatment modalities for ruptured hepatocellular carcinoma patients in BCLC stage A remains controversial, and this study compared the overall survival of ruptured HCC patients undergoing TACE or hepatectomy.A total of 283 ruptured HCC patients treated at our liver surgery center were included in our study, of which 175 were treated with hepatectomy and 108 were treated with TACE. To reduce selection bias, we used a propensity score matching (PSM) model, which yielded a total of 88 pairs of patients. We used the Kaplan-Meier method to compare the long-term prognosis, and the Landmark method was used to compare the short-term and long-term prognoses of patients after PSM. Finally, we performed subgroup analysis according to whether it met the Milan criteria.After PSM, in the hepatectomy group, the 1-, 3-, and 5 year OS rates were 73.4%, 45.4%, and 33.9%, respectively. In the TACE group, the 1-, 3-, and 5 year OS rates were 58.5%, 40.6%, and 23.2%, respectively. Within one year, the hepatectomy group had a better prognosis than the TACE group (P = 0.022), but there was no difference in long-term survival(P = 0.936). In the subgroup analysis, in patients who met the Milan criteria, the survival curve indicated that there was no statistically significant difference in the survival prognosis between the two groups (P = 0.294) HR = 1.56(0.68-3.59); in the patients beyond the Milan criteria, the survival time was 28.0 months (20.0-34.0) in patients who underwent hepatectomy and 18 months (9.8-26.2) in patients who underwent TACE, and the survival curve indicated a statistically significant difference (P = 0.043) HR = 1.57(1.01-2.43).Our propensity score-matched study found that ruptured HCC patients treated by hepatectomy had a better short-term prognosis than those treated by TACE, but there was no difference in the long-term prognosis between the two treatment groups.

Aiming at the problems of intensified deformation and serious stress damage of stope overburden during mining in deep typical geological environment, taking the deep mining face of a mine in the northwest as the research background, the characteristics and influencing factors of overburden collapse in deep geological environment are analyzed, a comprehensive evaluation system affecting overburden instability and deformation is established, and the temporal and spatial evolution law of deep stope roof failure is obtained by using the “three-zone” distribution theory of overburden, analytic hierarchy process, and numerical simulation method. The results show that high ground stress has the most significant impact on the geological environment of deep stope, followed by the properties of surrounding rock, hydrogeological conditions, and unloading disturbance. The damage degree of the plastic zone at the top of the overburden is greater than that at the bottom. With the increase of mining time, the damage range of the roof and floor gradually increases. In the process of coal seam mining, the increasing range and sinking trend of roof stress are larger near the working face, and the farther away from the working face, the increasing range decreases continuously. The research conclusion provides an important reference for coal seam safety mining and surrounding rock control in complex environments such as deep mining, high stress, and strong disturbance.
