The temporal-limits-encoder (TLE) strategy has been proposed to enhance the representation of temporal fine structure (TFS) in cochlear implants (CIs), which is vital for many aspects of sound perception but is typically discarded by most modern CI strategies. TLE works by computing an envelope modulator that is within the temporal pitch limits of CI electric hearing. This paper examines the TFS information encoded by TLE and evaluates the salience and usefulness of this information in CI users. Two experiments were conducted to compare pitch perception performance of TLE versus the widely-used Advanced Combinational Encoder (ACE) strategy. Experiment 1 investigated whether TLE processing improved pitch discrimination compared to ACE. Experiment 2 parametrically examined the effect of changing the lower frequency limit of the TLE modulator on pitch ranking. In both experiments, F0 difference limens were measured with synthetic harmonic complex tones using an adaptive procedure. Signal analysis of the outputs of TLE and ACE strategies showed that TLE introduces important temporal pitch cues that are not available with ACE. Results showed an improvement in pitch discrimination with TLE when the acoustic input had a lower F0 frequency. No significant effect of lower frequency limit was observed for pitch ranking, though a lower limit did tend to provide better outcomes. These results suggest that the envelope modulation introduced by TLE can improve pitch perception for CI listeners.

The WRKY transcription factor (TF) belongs to one of the major plant protein superfamilies. The WRKY TF gene family plays an important role in the regulation of transcriptional reprogramming associated with plant stress responses. Change in the expression patterns of WRKY genes or the modifications in their action; participate in the elaboration of numerous signaling pathways and regulatory networks. WRKY proteins contribute to plant growth, for example, gamete formation, seed germination, post-germination growth, stem elongation, root hair growth, leaf senescence, flowering time, and plant height. Moreover, they play a key role in many types of environmental signals, including drought, temperature, salinity, cold, and biotic stresses. This review summarizes the current progress made in unraveling the functions of numerous WRKY TFs under drought, salinity, temperature, and cold stresses as well as their role in plant growth and development.

Despite pitch being considered the primary cue for discriminating lexical tones, there are secondary cues such as loudness contour and duration, which may allow some cochlear implant (CI) tone discrimination even with severely degraded pitch cues. To isolate pitch cues from other cues, we developed a new disyllabic word stimulus set (Di) whose primary (pitch) and secondary (loudness) cue varied independently. This Di set consists of 270 disyllabic words, each having a distinct meaning depending on the perceived tone. Thus, listeners who hear the primary pitch cue clearly may hear a different meaning from listeners who struggle with the pitch cue and must rely on the secondary loudness contour. A lexical tone recognition experiment was conducted, which compared Di with a monosyllabic set of natural recordings. Seventeen CI users and eight normal-hearing (NH) listeners took part in the experiment. Results showed that CI users had poorer pitch cues encoding and their tone recognition performance was significantly influenced by the “missing” or “confusing” secondary cues with the Di corpus. The pitch-contour-based tone recognition is still far from satisfactory for CI users compared to NH listeners, even if some appear to integrate multiple cues to achieve high scores. This disyllabic corpus could be used to examine the performance of pitch recognition of CI users and the effectiveness of pitch cue enhancement based Mandarin tone enhancement strategies. Climate change and population aging are two of the most important global health challenges in this century. A 2020 study by the Environmental Protection Agency showed that average people, particularly older adults, spent 90% of their time at home. This is even more evident during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Home-based care models have become a new trend. The health and comfort of the living environment profoundly impacts the wellbeing of older adults. Therefore, research on the physical environment of the family wards has become an inevitable part of promoting the health of older adults; however, current research is still lacking. Based on the study and analysis of continuous monitoring data related to elements of the physical environment (thermal comfort, acoustic quality, lighting quality, and indoor air quality) of family wards, this paper explores the living behaviors of the participants in this environmental research (open or closed windows, air conditioning, artificial lighting, and television) on the indoor physical environment. (1) While referring to the requirements of international standards for an indoor aging-friendly physical environment, we also discuss and analyze the physical environment parameter values according to Chinese standards. (2) People's life behaviors have different degrees of influence on the elements of indoor physical environments. For example, opening doors and windows can alleviate the adverse effects of indoor environmental quality on the human body better than simply turning on the air conditioner. (3) Owing to the decline in physical function, older adults need special care. Studying the status quo of physical environmental elements and proposing suitable environmental improvement measures for aging are of great significance. (4) This research aims to address global warming and severe aging and to contribute to sustainable environmental development.

Background: Calcium-suppressed (CaSupp) technique involving spectral-based images has been used to observe bone marrow edema by removing calcium components from the image. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the knee articular cartilage using the CaSupp technique in dual-layer detector computed tomography (DLCT). Methods: Twenty-eight healthy participants and two patients with osteoarthritis were enrolled, who underwent DLCT and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination. CaSupp images were reconstructed from spectral-based images using a calcium suppression algorithm and were overlaid with conventional CT images for visual evaluation. The morphology of the knee cartilage was evaluated, and the thickness of the articular cartilage was measured on sagittal proton density-weighted and CaSupp images in the patellofemoral compartment. Results: No abnormal signal or density, cartilage defect, and subjacent bone ulceration were observed in the lateral and medial femorotibial compartments and the patellofemoral compartment on MRI images and CaSupp images for the 48 normal knee joints. CaSupp images could clearly identify cartilage thinning, defect, subjacent bone marrow edema, and edema of the infrapatellar fat pad in the same way as MRI images in the three knee joints with osteoarthritis. A significant difference was found in the mean thickness of the patellar cartilage between MRI images and CaSupp images, while the femoral cartilage presented no significant difference in thickness between MRI images and CaSupp images in all 48 knee joints. Conclusion: The present study demonstrated that CaSupp images could effectively be used to perform the visual and quantitative assessment of knee cartilage.

The difference in binaural benefit between bilateral cochlear implant (CI) users and normal hearing (NH) listeners has typically been attributed to CI sound coding strategies not encoding the acoustic fine structure (FS) interaural time differences (ITD). The Temporal Limits Encoder (TLE) strategy is proposed as a potential way of improving binaural hearing benefits for CI users in noisy situations. TLE works by downward-transposition of mid-frequency band-limited channel information and can theoretically provide FS-ITD cues. In this work, the effect of choice of lower limit of the modulator in TLE was examined by measuring performance on a word recognition task and computing the magnitude of binaural benefit in bilateral CI users. Performance listening with the TLE strategy was compared with the commonly used Advanced Combinational Encoder (ACE) CI sound coding strategy. Results showed that setting the lower limit to $\geq$ 200 Hz maintained word recognition performance comparable to that of ACE. While most CI listeners exhibited a large binaural benefit ( $\geq$ 6 dB) in at least one of the conditions tested, there was no systematic relationship between the lower limit of the modulator and performance. These results indicate that the TLE strategy has potential to improve binaural hearing abilities in CI users but further work is needed to understand how binaural benefit can be maximized.

Acoustic simulations of cochlear implants (CIs) allow for studies of perceptual performance with minimized effects of large CI individual variability. Different from conventional simulations using continuous sinusoidal or noise carriers, the present study employs pulsatile Gaussian-enveloped tones (GETs) to simulate several key features in modern CIs. Subject to the time-frequency uncertainty principle, the GET has a well-defined tradeoff between its duration and bandwidth. Two types of GET vocoders were implemented and evaluated in normal-hearing listeners. In the first implementation, constant 100-Hz GETs were used to minimize within-channel temporal overlap while different GET durations were used to simulate electric channel interaction. This GET vocoder could produce vowel and consonant recognition similar to actual CI performance. In the second implementation, 900-Hz/channel pulse trains were directly mapped to 900-Hz GET trains to simulate the maxima selection and amplitude compression of a widely-usedn-of-m processing strategy, or the Advanced Combination Encoder. The simulated and actual implant performance of speech-in-noise recognition was similar in terms of the overall trend, absolute mean scores, and standard deviations. The present results suggest that the pulsatile GET vocoders can be used as alternative vocoders to simultaneously simulate several key CI processing features and result in similar speech perception performance to that with modern CIs.

Priming is used as a method to improve plant growth and alleviate the detrimental effects of pathogens. The present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of different priming methods in the context of resistance to Aspergillus niger in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Here, we show that different priming treatments—viz., hydropriming, osmotic priming, halopriming, and hormonal priming techniques can induce disease resistance by improving the biochemical contents of wheat, including chlorophyll, protein, proline, and sugar. In addition, physiological parameters—such as root length, shoot length, fresh and dry root/shoot ratios, and relative water content were positively affected by these priming methods. In essence, hydropriming and osmotic priming treatments were found to be more potent for enhancing wheat biochemical contents, along with all the physiological parameters, and for reducing disease severity. Hydropriming and osmotic priming significantly decreased disease severity, by 70.59–75.00% and 64.71–88.33%, respectively. RT-PCR and quantitative real-time PCR analyses of potentially important pathogenesis-related (PR)-protein genes (Thaumatin-like protein (TLP), chitinase, and β-1,3-glucanase) in primed plants were evaluated: β-1,3-glucanase was most highly expressed in all primed plants; Chitinase and TLP exhibited higher expression in hormonal-, halo-, osmotic-, and hydro-primed plants, respectively. These results suggest that the higher expression of β-1,3-glucanase,TLP, and chitinase after hydropriming and osmotic priming may increase disease resistance in wheat. Our study demonstrates the greater potential of hydropriming and osmotic priming for alleviating stress caused by A. niger inoculation, and enhancing resistance to it, in addition to significantly improving plant growth. Thus, these priming methods could be beneficial for better plant growth and disease resistance in other plants.

In the face of the dual crisis of energy shortages and global warming, the vigorous development of renewable energy represented by wind-solar energy is a significant approach towards achieving energy transition, carbon peaking, and carbon neutrality goals. Targeting the park-level integrated energy system (PIES) with high penetration of wind-solar energy, we propose a day-ahead dispatching strategy that takes into account the flexible supply and the reward-punishment ladder-type carbon trading mechanism (RPLTCTM). Firstly, RPLTCTM and carbon capture equipment (CCE) are considered in the dispatching model, and the mechanism of coordinated operation of CCE and RPLTCTM is explored to further improve the system’s ability to restrain carbon emissions. Secondly, power-based flexibility indicators (PFIs) are adopted to quantitatively evaluate the flexibility supply, and based on the load demand response characteristics, the dispatchable resources on the load side are guided to improve the system’s operation flexibility. On this basis, a multi-objective optimal dispatching model that takes into account the carbon emission cost, energy cost, and flexibility supply are constructed, and the original problem is transformed into a mixed-integer single-objective linear problem through mathematical equivalence and flexibility cost. Finally, simulation examples validate that the economy, flexibility, and low-carbon level of the dispatching plan can be synergistically improved by the proposed strategy.

The cochlea plays a key role in the transmission from acoustic vibration to neural stimulation upon which the brain perceives the sound. A cochlear implant (CI) is an auditory prosthesis to replace the damaged cochlear hair cells to achieve acoustic-to-neural conversion. However, the CI is a very coarse bionic imitation of the normal cochlea. The highly resolved time-frequency-intensity information transmitted by the normal cochlea, which is vital to high-quality auditory perception such as speech perception in challenging environments, cannot be guaranteed by CIs. Although CI recipients with state-of-the-art commercial CI devices achieve good speech perception in quiet backgrounds, they usually suffer from poor speech perception in noisy environments. Therefore, noise suppression or speech enhancement (SE) is one of the most important technologies for CI. In this study, we introduce recent progress in deep learning (DL), mostly neural networks (NN)-based SE front ends to CI, and discuss how the hearing properties of the CI recipients could be utilized to optimize the DL-based SE. In particular, different loss functions are introduced to supervise the NN training, and a set of objective and subjective experiments is presented. Results verify that the CI recipients are more sensitive to the residual noise than the SE-induced speech distortion, which has been common knowledge in CI research. Furthermore, speech reception threshold (SRT) in noise tests demonstrates that the intelligibility of the denoised speech can be significantly improved when the NN is trained with a loss function bias to more noise suppression than that with equal attention on noise residue and speech distortion.

True wireless stereo (TWS) earbuds have become popular and widespread in recent years, and numerous automated pure-tone audiometer applications have been developed for portable devices. However, most of these applications require specifically designed earphones to which the public may not have access. Therefore, the present study investigates the accuracy of automated pure-tone audiometry based on TWS earbuds (Honor FlyPods). The procedure for developing an automated pure-tone audiometer is reported. Calibration of the TWS earbuds was accomplished by electroacoustic measurements and establishing corrected reference equivalent threshold sound pressure levels. The developed audiometer was then compared with a clinical audiometer using 20 hearing-impaired participants. The average signed and absolute deviations between hearing thresholds measured using the two audiometers were 3.1 dB and 6.7 dB, respectively. The overall accuracy rate in determining the presence/absence of hearing loss was 81%. The results show that the proposed procedure for an automated air-conduction audiometer based on TWS earbuds is feasible, and the system gives accurate hearing level estimation using the reported calibration framework.

Background: The quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) technique can be used to quantitatively evaluate the cerebral iron deposition of the deep gray matter structure (DGM) in clinical practice. However, it could be significantly important to assess the reproducibility of the susceptibility values at different magnetic resonance (MR) scanners before the QSM technique can be widely used in clinical applications. Objective: This study aimed to assess the reproducibility of susceptibility value of the deep gray matter structure (DGM) at two different MR systems with the same magnetic strength. Methods: Raw data of 21 normal subjects (M/F = 7/14, median age 29 (21, 63) years) were acquired from a 3D multi-echo enhanced gradient recalled echo sequence at two different 3.0T MR systems, and STI software was used to reconstruct the magnetic susceptibility images. Brain structural images were used to be coregistered with magnitude images to generate normalized parameters and normalized susceptibility images. Voxel-based intraclass correlation coefficient (VB-ICC) was used to evaluate the reproducibility of susceptibility value of DGM at different 3.0T MR systems. Results: DGM with ICC > 0.75 is located in the bilateral posterior putamen and globus pallidus, bilateral red nuclei, and left dental nucleus. DGM with 0.6 < ICC < 0.75 is mainly located in the bilateral anterior putamen and globus pallidus, the margin of the bilateral red nuclei, right dental nucleus, and the margin of the left dental nucleus. DGM with 0.4 < ICC < 0.6 is located in anterior parts of the bilateral putamen, bilateral globus pallidus and substantia nigra, the margin of the bilateral dental nuclei, and the inferior part of the right dental nucleus. Conclusion: DGM presented regional dependent reproducibility of susceptibility value at two different 3.0T MR systems based on VB-ICC analysis.

Signal processing strategies in most clinical cochlear implants (CIs) extract and transmit speech envelopes to stimulate the auditory neurons. The incomplete representation of the rich fine structures in speech has significantly degraded the CI recipients’ ability in high- level perception, including their speech understanding in noise. This paper presents a noise-robust signal processing strategy to deal with this problem. Neural networks (NN) are built and trained to simulate the advanced combination encoder (ACE, a strategy for CI products of Cochlear Corporation). The NN-based ACE (namely, NNACE) is trained with a sophisticatedly designed loss function to output envelope-like signals that 1) is compatible with ACE-based CI system and can serve as the modulator to generate the electric stimuli, 2) is more noise-robust, and 3) might bear a certain degree of the temporal fine structures of speech. Subjective and objective evaluations with vocoder simulated speech show that NNACE outperforms the other methods and further actual CI experiments are warranted.

Pervious pavement has been regarded as an effective technique for both water storm management and overheating prevention. However, compared with its widely recognized permeability capability, its solar evaporative cooling performance remains under debate after post-occupancy evaluation; thus, it is essential to predict the solar evaporative cooling ability before practical use. Hygrothermal properties (i.e., albedo, water absorption, and water retention properties) are key factors that affect the solar evaporative cooling effect of pervious materials and could be extracted as predictive indicators. However, an approach for assessing the water absorption and retention properties has not been well studied. Therefore, this study aimed at characterizing a feasible method for testing water absorption and retention properties of pervious materials as well as the influence of albedo on the solar evaporative cooling performance. Five widely used pervious materials were selected as research subjects, and three hydrological test methods, including the integral immersion test, partial immersion test, and rainfall simulation test, were conducted for comparing the feasibility of measuring water absorption and retention properties. Furthermore, the solar evaporative cooling performance of pervious materials with high and low albedo was also investigated. The results reveal that the partial immersion test has the highest accuracy for evaluating the water absorption and retention properties of pervious materials. Although the high albedo could weaken the evaporation rate, pervious materials with high albedo could also achieve better solar evaporative cooling performance. The results of this study support the proper selection of pervious materials to alleviate urban overheating.

Buildings on tropical islands in the South China Sea are facing an overheating challenge. High-water-absorbency unglazed porous ceramic (UPC) materials could counteract heat gain by evaporation. Salty humid air and seawater in the marine environment lead to evaporative cooling differences from inland conditions. This research replicated a salty humid atmosphere with a stable concentration similar to the actual environment in a dynamic hot-humid climate wind tunnel (DHWT). The influence of salt in gas-liquid media on evaporative cooling is discussed. The results showed that the salt concentration of humid air in the wind tunnel can be controlled by adjusting the atomization rate and the concentration of the atomized liquid. Humid air and liquid with salt reduced the evaporation rate of the UPC tiles. The influence of salty humid air was generally less than that of seawater. In 6 mg/m3 salty air, the total evaporative cooling effect decreased by 2.63% and 40.44% when saturated with fresh water and a 3.5% sodium chloride solution, respectively, relative to saturation with fresh water and evaporation in humid air without salt. In conclusion, sea salt in humid air and in the liquid phase reduced but did not eliminate the evaporative cooling effect of UPC materials. Seawater source utilization showed a significant benefit in cooling and water conservation aspects in coastal areas.

Pervious pavements are efficient in the mitigation of urban heat island effects. Many studies have revealed the water availability of pervious paving materials dominates the evaporative cooling effect. However, the water retention capacity of these materials is affected by the water absorption capability, which has scarcely been investigated in relation to evaporation. Therefore, this study investigates the water absorption capability of pervious paving materials and its influence on evaporative cooling performance. We examine the water absorption capability of three similar-coloured materials, including sintered ceramic pervious brick (CB), pervious concrete brick (PB), and open-graded pervious concrete (PC), as well as their evaporative cooling performance under a steady-state hot-humid environment in a climatic wind tunnel. The results indicate that: (1) CB had the highest water absorption coefficient of 2.04 kg/m2·s0.5, which is approximately about 30 and 200 times higher than that of PB and PC, respectively; however, these materials had similar water retention capabilities, with a capillary moisture content of 110 ± 10 kg/m3, revealing that CB could hold more water in a very short time; and (2) CB and PB could effectively reduce the surface temperature by up to 20 °C and 12 °C with a cooling period of 16 h and 12 h, respectively. In comparison, PC demonstrated a weak cooling effect of 2 °C, which only lasted for 4 h. Overall, materials with a high water absorption capability can maintain hydraulic continuity balance for a long time, which is beneficial to enhancing evaporation and further lowering the surface temperature.

Faster speech may facilitate more efficient communication, but if speech is too fast it becomes unintelligible. The maximum speeds at which Mandarin words were intelligible in a sentence context were quantified for normal hearing (NH) and cochlear implant (CI) listeners by measuring time-compression thresholds (TCTs) in an adaptive staircase procedure. In Experiment 1, both original and CI-vocoded time-compressed speech from the MSP (Mandarin speech perception) and MHINT (Mandarin hearing in noise test) corpora was presented to 10 NH subjects over headphones. In Experiment 2, original time-compressed speech was presented to 10 CI subjects and another 10 NH subjects through a loudspeaker in a soundproof room. Sentences were time-compressed without changing their spectral profile, and were presented up to three times within a single trial. At the end of each trial, the number of correctly identified words in the sentence was scored. A 50%-word recognition threshold was tracked in the psychophysical procedure. The observed median TCTs were very similar for MSP and MHINT speech. For NH listeners, median TCTs were around 16.7 syllables/s for normal speech, and 11.8 and 8.6 syllables/s respectively for 8 and 4 channel tone-carrier vocoded speech. For CI listeners, TCTs were only around 6.8 syllables/s. The interquartile range of the TCTs within each cohort was smaller than 3.0 syllables/s. Speech reception thresholds in noise were also measured in Experiment 2, and were found to be strongly correlated with TCTs for CI listeners. In conclusion, the Mandarin sentence TCTs were around 16.7 syllables/s for most NH subjects, but rarely faster than 10.0 syllables/s for CI listeners, which quantitatively illustrated upper limits of fast speech information processing with CIs.

Pervious pavement system (PPS) is a suitable alternative technique for mitigating urban flooding and urban heat island (UHI) simultaneously. However, existing literature has revealed that PPSs cannot achieve the expected permeability and evaporation. To overcome this gap, this study presents an elaborate review of problems associated with PPSs and highlights its benefits to stormwater management and UHI mitigation. We determined key parameters of PPSs that could influence urban flooding and UHI mitigation, including hydrological properties, thermal physical properties, structure design, and clogging resistance. We identified the co-benefits approach of PPS towards performance synergism on stormwater management and UHI mitigation from quality controlled design and fabrication, periodic maintenance, and effective evaluation system based on practice environments. The results indicate that existing studies of PPSs primarily focus on permeability, while little emphasis is given to the evaporative cooling performance, leading to a biased development with a loss of test standards and regulations that cannot control the cooling potential of the system. The performance synergism of permeability and evaporative cooling in PPS should be studied further, while considering quality control of the materials and in-situ practice design. Parameter controls (with commonly used standards) during fabrication, periodic maintenance (during operation), and pre- and post-evaluation processes of PPSs should work collectively to achieve optimal benefits and reduced costs.

Rubus L. is one of the most diverse genera belonging to Rosaceae; it consists of more than 700 species with a worldwide distribution. It thus provides an ideal natural “supergenus” for studying the importance of its edible, medicinal, and phylogenetic characteristics for application in our daily lives and fundamental scientific studies. The Rubus genus includes many economically important species, such as blackberry (R. fruticosus L.), red raspberry (R. ideaus L.), black raspberry (R. occidentalis L.), and raspberry (R. chingii Hu), which are widely utilized in the fresh fruit market and the medicinal industry. Although Rubus species have existed in human civilization for hundreds of years, their utilization as fruit and in medicine is still largely inadequate, and many questions on their complex phylogenetic relationships need to be answered. In this review, we briefly summarize the history and progress of studies on Rubus, including its domestication as a source of fresh fruit, its medicinal uses in pharmacology, and its systematic position in the phylogenetic tree. Recent available evidence indicates that (1) thousands of Rubus cultivars were bred via time- and labor-consuming methods from only a few wild species, and new breeding strategies and germplasms were thus limited; (2) many kinds of species in Rubus have been used as medicinal herbs, though only a few species (R. ideaus L., R. chingii Hu, and R. occidentalis L.) have been well studied; (3) the phylogeny of Rubus is very complex, with the main reason for this possibly being the existence of multiple reproductive strategies (apomixis, hybridization, and polyploidization). Our review addresses the utilization of Rubus, summarizing major relevant achievements and proposing core prospects for future application, and thus could serve as a useful roadmap for future elite cultivar breeding and scientific studies.
