Tillering is a crucial trait closely associated with yield potential and environmental adaptation in cereal crops, regulated by the synergy of endogenous (genetic) and exogenous (environmental) factors. The physiological and molecular regulation of tillering has been intensively studied in rice and wheat. However, tillering research on barley is scarce. This review used the recent advances in bioinformatics to map all known and potential barley tiller development genes with their chromosomal genetic and physical positions. Many of them were mapped for the first time. We also discussed tillering regulation at genetic, physiological, and environmental levels. Moreover, we established a novel link between the genetic control of phytohormones and sugars with tillering. We provided evidence of how environmental cues and cropping systems help optimize the tiller number. This comprehensive review enhances the understanding of barley’s physiological and genetic mechanisms controlling tillering and other developmental traits.

In this review, we argue that there is much to be learned by transferring knowledge from research on lignocellulose degradation to that on plastic. Plastic waste accumulates in the environment to hazardous levels, because it is inherently recalcitrant to biological degradation. Plants evolved lignocellulose to be resistant to degradation, but with time, fungi became capable of utilising it for their nutrition. Examples of how fungal strategies to degrade lignocellulose could be insightful for plastic degradation include how fungi overcome the hydrophobicity of lignin (e.g. production of hydrophobins) and crystallinity of cellulose (e.g. oxidative approaches). In parallel, knowledge of the methods for understanding lignocellulose degradation could be insightful such as advanced microscopy, genomic and post-genomic approaches (e.g. gene expression analysis). The known limitations of biological lignocellulose degradation, such as the necessity for physiochemical pretreatments for biofuel production, can be predictive of potential restrictions of biological plastic degradation. Taking lessons from lignocellulose degradation for plastic degradation is also important for biosafety as engineered plastic-degrading fungi could also have increased plant biomass degrading capabilities. Even though plastics are significantly different from lignocellulose because they lack hydrolysable C-C or C-O bonds and therefore have higher recalcitrance, there are apparent similarities, e.g. both types of compounds are mixtures of hydrophobic polymers with amorphous and crystalline regions, and both require hydrolases and oxidoreductases for their degradation. Thus, many lessons could be learned from fungal lignocellulose degradation.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of ciceritol on human colonic microflora and the production of short chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Ciceritol was extracted from chickpeas by using 50% ethanol-water solvent with a ratio of 1:10, and the extract was purified by chromatography of charcoal-Celite column and gel chromatography of Biogel P-2 column. Bacterial population and the concentration of SCFAs during in vitro anaerobic fermentation were investigated to evaluate the effect of ciceritol on human colonic microflora. The results indicated that the addition of ciceritol could significantly enhance the growth of Lactobacillus–Enterococcus group (8.26 compared to 7.71 log 10 cells/mL of control group) and Bifidobacterium spp. (10.43 compared to 9.45 log 10 cells/mL of control group), and inhibit the growth of Bacteroides–Prevotella , Clostridium histolyticum and Eubacterium–Clostridium groups. Besides, the production of SCFAs was significantly improved by addition of ciceritol that the content was twice of the control group. Accordingly, we conclude that ciceritol can behave as a potential prebiotics by optimizing the microflora of human colon and promoting the production of SCFAs, which will benefit to human health.
