The parent compound of high-Tc superconducting cuprates is a unique Mott state consisting of layers of spin-1/2 ions arranged on a square lattice and with a record high antiferromagnetic coupling within the layers. Compounds with similar characteristics have long been searched for. Nickelates and iridates had been proposed as cuprate analogs but so far have not reached a satisfactory similarity. Here we use a combination of experimental and theoretical tools to show that the commercial compound AgF2 is an excellent cuprate analog with remarkably similar electronic parameters to La2CuO4 but larger buckling of planes. Two-magnon Raman scattering reveals a superexchange constant which reaches 70% of that of a typical cuprate. We argue that structures that reduce or eliminate the buckling of the AgF2 planes could have an antiferromagnetic coupling that matches or surpasses the cuprates., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures plus Supplementary Information in ancillary folder

This work explored polysulfone (PS) – graphene oxide (GO) based porous membranes (PS-GO) as adsorber of seven selected organic contaminants of emerging concern (EOCs) including pharmaceuticals, personal care products, a dye and a surfactant from water. PS-GO was prepared by phase inversion method starting from a PS and GO mixture (5% w/w of GO). The porous PS-GO membranes showed asymmetric and highly porous micrometer sized pores on membrane top (diameter ≈20 μm) and bottom (diameter ≈2–5 μm) surfaces and tens of microns length finger like pores in the section. Nanomechanical mapping reveals patches of a stiffer material with Young modules comprised in the range 15–25 GPa, not present in PS pure membranes that are compatible with the presence of GO flakes on the membrane surfaces. PS-GO was immersed in EOCs spiked tap water and the adsorbance efficiency at different contact times and pH evaluated by HPLC analysis. Ofloxacin (OFLOX), benzophenone-3 (BP-3), rhodamine b (Rh), diclofenac (DCF) and triton X-100 (TRX) were removed with efficiency higher than 90% after 4 h treatments. Regeneration of PS-GO and reuse possibilities were demonstrated by washing with ethanol. The adsorption efficiencies toward OFLOX, Rh, DCF and carbamazepine (CBZ) were significantly higher than those of pure PS membrane. Moreover, PS-GO outperformed a commercial granular activated carbon (GAC) at low contact times and compared well at longer contact time for OFLOX, Rh, BP-3 and TRX suggesting the suitability of the newly introduced material for drinking water treatment.

The use of doped silk fibroin (SF) films and substrates from Bombyx mori cocoons for green nanotechnology and biomedical applications has been recently highlighted. Cocoons from coloured strains of B. mori, such as Golden-Yellow, contain high levels of pigments that could have a huge potential for the fabrication of SF based biomaterials targeted to photonics, optoelectronics and neuroregenerative medicine. However, the features of extracted and regenerated SF from cocoons of B. mori Golden-Yellow strain have never been reported. Here we provide a chemophysical characterization of regenerated silk fibroin (RSF) fibers, solution, and films obtained from cocoons of a Golden-Yellow strain of B. mori, by SEM, H-1-NMR, HPLC, FT-IR, Raman and UV-Vis spectroscopy. We found that the extracted solution and films from B. mori Golden-Yellow fibroin displayed typical Raman spectroscopic and optical features of carotenoids. HPLC-analyses revealed that lutein was the carotenoid contained in the fiber and RSF biopolymer from yellow cocoons. Notably, primary neurons cultured on yellow SF displayed a threefold higher neurite length than those grown of white SF films. The results we report pave the way to expand the potential use of yellow SF in the field of neuroregenerative medicine and provide green chemistry approaches in biomedicine. Skin disorders are widespread around the world, affecting people of all ages, and oxidative stress represents one of the main causes of alteration in the normal physiological parameters of skin cells. In this work, we combined a natural protein, fibroin, with antioxidant compounds extracted in water from pomegranate waste. We demonstrate the effective and facile fabrication of bioactive and eco-sustainable films of potential interest for skin repair. The blended films are visually transparent (around 90%); flexible; stable in physiological conditions and in the presence of trypsin for 12 days; able to release the bioactive compounds in a controlled manner; based on Fickian diffusion; and biocompatible towards the main skin cells, keratinocytes and fibroblasts. Furthermore, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production tests demonstrated the high capacity of our films to reduce the oxidative stress induced in cells, which is responsible for various skin diseases.

A robust and efficient interconnection layer (ICL) based on low conductive poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) and ZnO nanoparticles is implemented in a solution-air-processed, blade coated inverted polymer tandem solar cell. The commercial PEDOT:PSS (Heraeus Clevios P VP Al 4083) is modified with a fluorosurfactant to allow its deposi- tion onto any hydrophobic active layer surface. However, this method alters the electrical and energetic properties of the PEDOT:PSS thus affecting the interface with the ZnO layer, responsible for an inefficient ICL and poorly performing tandem devices. The ohmic contact at the PEDOT:PSS/ZnO interface is successfully optimized through a simple solvent treatment of the PEDOT:PSS film surface, leading to tandem devices with power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) improved by more than 50% compared to the untreated reference system. The reported method is an easy and versatile approach to optimize the functionality of the PEDOT:PSS/ZnO ICL of inverted multijunc- tion devices, applicable onto any organic active layer and compatible with a roll-to-roll production line.

We report here a study on the integration of the silk fibroin (SF) protein in organic solar cells. The intrinsic low toxicity, natural availability, biodegradability, water processing, good film forming properties and capability to be doped with functional molecules of SF biopolymer inspired us to integrate it as a transparent and inert or functional bottom layer in organic solar cells. Water stable, optically transparent, smooth and homogeneous SF thin films (thickness ∼400 nm) were successfully prepared on glass and characterized. Then ITO-free bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells employing P3HT:PC61BM as a standard active layer and a highly conductive PEDOT:PSS formulation as a semi-transparent anode were deposited over the SF films. As a result, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of all silk-integrated BHJ solar cells was comparable to the references on bare glass. The ability of SF to act as a host matrix for functional moieties was exploited to give to the SF layer the functionality of a Luminescent Down-shifting film (LDS), as confirmed by the spectral response measurements, by using a water soluble stilbene derivative (Stb). The photovoltaic performance of all SF-based devices was significantly stable over time, overcoming the problems of the ITO-based reference cells after 70 days. Finally, flexible SF-integrated ITO-free solar cells were successfully fabricated on PET substrates.
