Individual dietary variation has important ecological and evolutionary consequences. However, it has been overlooked in many taxa that are thought to have homogeneous diets. This is the case of vultures, considered merely as ‘carrion eaters’. Given their high degree of sociality, vultures are an excellent model to investigate how inter-individual transmissible behaviours drive individual dietary variation. Here, we combine GPS-tracking and accelerometers with an exhaustive fieldwork campaign to identify the individual diet of 55 griffon vultures (Gyps fulvus) from two Spanish populations that partially overlap in their foraging areas. We found that individuals from the more humanized population consumed more anthropic resources (e.g. stabled livestock or rubbish), resulting in more homogeneous diets. By contrast, individuals from the wilder population consumed more wild ungulates, increasing their dietary variability. Between sexes, we found that males consumed anthropic resources more than females did. Interestingly, in the shared foraging area, vultures retained the dietary preference of their original population, highlighting a strong cultural component. Overall, these results expand the role of cultural traits in shaping key behaviours and call for the need of including cultural traits in Optimal Foraging models, especially in those species that strongly rely on social information while foraging.

La trashumancia es una actividad ancestral en riesgo de desaparición. Las elevadas exigencias que supone este modo de vida y la poca rentabilidad que se obtiene de ella dificultan el relevo generacional y, por tanto, su continuidad. Por otra parte, en los mercados, la carne de origen trashumante no está diferenciada. Como consecuencia, los ganaderos se ven privados del valor añadido que podría derivarse de una carne producida en condiciones extensivas. En este trabajo se explora el potencial interés que tendría una certificación del origen trashumante de carne entre los consumidores de cordero y/o ternera. Para ello se ha realizado una encuesta on-line a 385 consumidores de este tipo de carne. La muestra se ha segmentado según la importancia otorgada a una serie de aspectos de garantía sobre un hipotético certificado de trashumancia, obteniéndose tres segmentos. Los segmentos difieren entre sí en la intención de compra de carne de cordero y ternera de origen trashumante, así como en la importancia otorgada a diversos atributos en la compra de carne. También difieren en una serie de conductas medioambientales. Esto nos permite proponer estrategias específicas para comercializar este tipo de carne y tratar de revitalizar el sector ganadero trashumante.

Scavenger species registered in the community. Concern for megafauna is increasing among scientists and non-scientists. Many studies have emphasized that megafauna play prominent ecological roles and provide important ecosystem services to humanity. But, what precisely are ‘megafauna’? Here, we critically assess the concept of megafauna and propose a goal-oriented framework for megafaunal research. First, we review definitions of megafauna and analyse associated terminology in the scientific literature. Second, we conduct a survey among ecologists and palaeontologists to assess the species traits used to identify and define megafauna. Our review indicates that definitions are highly dependent on the study ecosystem and research question, and primarily rely on ad hoc size-related criteria. Our survey suggests that body size is crucial, but not necessarily sufficient, for addressing the different applications of the term megafauna. Thus, after discussing the pros and cons of existing definitions, we propose an additional approach by defining two function-oriented megafaunal concepts: ‘keystone megafauna’ and ‘functional megafauna’, with its variant ‘apex megafauna’. Assessing megafauna from a functional perspective could challenge the perception that there may not be a unifying definition of megafauna that can be applied to all eco-evolutionary narratives. In addition, using functional definitions of megafauna could be especially conducive to cross-disciplinary understanding and cooperation, improvement of conservation policy and practice, and strengthening of public perception. As megafaunal research advances, we encourage scientists to unambiguously define how they use the term ‘megafauna’ and to present the logic underpinning their definition.

Trabajo presentado al VIII Congreso Nacional Derecho Ambiental: "Vulnerabilidad Ambiental", homenaje a Ramón Martín Mateo; celebrado en Sevilla, 10 y 11 de octubre de 2019., El uso ilegal del veneno es una de las principales amenazas para la conservación de especies, particularmente de carroñeros y depredadores. Aunque no existe información fiable sobre el impacto real del veneno en España, entre 1992 y 2013 se ha estimado que podrían haber muerto unos 185.000 animales entre aves y mamíferos. A pesar del elevado número de episodios de envenenamiento en nuestro país, el número de sentencias relacionadas con casos de envenenamiento es muy pequeño. Se han analizado las sentencias obtenidas hasta ahora en España para, entre otras cuestiones, evaluar la frecuencia con la que la responsabilidad ambiental es reconocida en los casos de envenenamiento. En general, la práctica judicial parece cada vez más proclive a admitir la reparación del daño causado mediante la directa aplicación de los baremos oficiales de valoración de las especies afectadas por el veneno, sean silvestres o cinegéticas. Sin embargo parece existir cierta reticencia a diferenciar esta indemnización de la reparación del equilibrio ecológico perturbado mediante la imposición de medidas recuperadoras. Una mejor implementación de la responsabilidad medioambiental pasa por la existencia de baremos oficiales de valoración de especies silvestres debidamente actualizados. También sería necesario que las medidas de reparación del equilibrio ecológico estuvieran fundamentadas con base científica. Analizada la Ley 26/2007 de Responsabilidad Medioambiental, entendemos que no tendría aplicación en el caso del uso del veneno, entre otros motivos, por no incluirse ninguna de las actividades que ocasionan su uso en los anexos de dicha Ley., Esta comunicación se enmarca en el Proyecto del Plan Nacional denominado "Sostenibilidad, servicios ecosistémicos y carroñeros en sistemas agroganaderos: integrando ecología del movimiento, modelos de poblaciones y percepción social" referencia CGL2015-66966-C2-1-R (Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad y Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional)”, coordinado por el Departamento de Biología Aplicada (Área de Ecología) de la Universidad Miguel Hernández de Elche y en el que participan investigadores de universidades como la Universidad de Granada, la Universidad de Oviedo, la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, el Instituto de Investigación en Recursos Cinegéticos - IREC (CSIC-UCLM-JCCM) y varias ONG con una larga trayectoria en la lucha contra el veneno como SEO/BirdLife y WWF/España.

A socioecological approach to biodiversity conservation has recently been encouraged. We examined farmer perceptions of ecosystem services provided by scavenging vertebrates in Spain through face-to-face surveys with farmers in seven large extensive livestock systems. Scavenging services (i.e., carrion consumption) was the most perceived benefit whereas the role of some scavengers as predators was the most recognized damage. The most beneficial scavengers perceived were vultures. Overall, we detected a “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” paradox as the same species and species within the same guild can be dually perceived as beneficial or harmful. Our findings provide evidence that traditional extensive farming linked to experience-based and local ecological knowledge drives positive perceptions of scavengers and their consideration as ecosystem services providers. Research on social perceptions can contribute to the conservation of scavengers by raising awareness about the ecosystem services provided by this functional group., The study was supported by MINECO and ERDF (project CGL2015-66966-C2-1-R). Trabajo presentado a las XXVI Jornadas Técnicas SEAE y al X Seminario Agroecología, Cambio Climático y Agroturismo: “Innovación Agroecológica y Cambio Climático”, celebrado en Orihuela del 19 al 20 de ocubre de 2017., Los sistemas agroganaderos tradicionales están estrechamente relacionados con la conservación de la biodiversidad y la provisión de servicios ecosistémicos. El estudio de la sostenibilidad de estos sistemas es de gran interés para la conservación de los ecosistemas naturales europeos, profundamente ligados a la presencia de actividades humanas. Nuestro objetivo fue evaluar la percepción de los ganaderos sobre los problemas asociados a la sostenibilidad de sus explotaciones ganaderas. Para ello, se realizaron encuestas a 255 ganaderos en régimen extensivo y semiextensivo en seis regiones agroganaderas de España. Los factores que determinan la viabilidad y sostenibilidad de las explotaciones ganaderas según los ganaderos incluyen tanto aspectos socio-económicos (e.g. mercados) como ambientales (e.g. climatología). En general, los problemas asociados a las fuerzas de mercado (i.e. incremento del precio del alimento del ganado y disminución del precio de venta de los productos derivados) fueron los más destacados por los ganaderos (>45% de ganaderos del conjunto de regiones estudiadas). Resulta destacable (>20%) la problemática asociada a eventos climatológicos extremos (e.g. sequía o temperaturas extremas), especialmente en zonas áridas del sureste peninsular y Canarias. En áreas con presencia de grandes depredadores se detectó un conflicto entre la conservación de la biodiversidad y la viabilidad de las explotaciones ganaderas (hasta el 71% de los ganaderos en el noroeste de España). En un contexto de cambio global, los resultados de este estudio suponen un importante punto de partida y proporcionan evidencias sobre los principales factores que pueden ser abordados para preservar los múltiples servicios ecosistémicos que proveen los sistemas agroganaderos tradicionales., Este estudio ha sido financiado por el proyecto CGL2015-66966-C2-1-R MINECO y Fondos FEDER.

Riparian areas along rivers are essential movement corridors for terrestrial animals. However, the potential role of the dry bed of intermittent rivers as a movement corridor has been largely ignored. In this study, we investigated the use of the dry riverbed, compared with riparian, upland, and unpaved road habitats, by terrestrial vertebrates (mammals, reptiles, and birds) along two intermittent streams in Spain. Seventy-two marble dust stations were established to record the identity, number, and direction of vertebrate tracks in spring and summer. We performed generalized linear mixed models to disentangle the environmental factors affecting the frequency of occurrence (tracks per station and visit) of vertebrates. The mean frequency of occurrence was similar in both streams and included mainly small mammals, reptiles, and birds. Dry beds were widely used by vertebrates, especially along the densely vegetated Rogativa catchment. Within dry beds, directional tracks were more frequent than tracks without a recognizable direction or with changing direction; tracks that ran parallel to the riverline were particularly frequent in summer; and upward tracks predominated in one study stream in summer. Our results highlight that dry riverbeds are important movement corridors for a wide range of terrestrial vertebrates, thus enhancing natural connectivity and supporting biodiversity and ecological processes along rivers and within the entire catchment.

Understanding the mechanisms that shape animal population dynamics is of fundamental interest in ecology, evolution and conservation biology. Food supply is an important limiting factor in most animal populations and may have demographic consequences. Optimal foraging theory predicts greater consumption of preferred prey and less diet diversity when food is abundant, which may benefit key fitness parameters such as productivity and survival. Nevertheless, the correspondence between individual resource use and demographic processes in populations of avian predators inhabiting large geographic areas remains largely unexplored, particularly in complex ecosystems such as those of the Mediterranean basin. Based on a long-term monitoring program of the diet and demography of Bonelli’s eagle Aquila fasciata in western Europe, here we test the hypothesis that a predator’s diet is correlated to its breeding productivity and survival at both the territorial and population levels, and ultimately to its population growth rate. At the territorial level, we found that productivity increased with greater consumption of European rabbits Oryctolagus cuniculus, the Bonelli’s eagle’s preferred prey, and pigeons, an important alternative prey for this predator. The survival of territorial pairs was negatively affected by higher diet diversity, which probably reflected the inability to find sufficient high quality prey. Diet effects at the population level were similar but more noticeable than at the territorial level, i.e. a greater consumption of rabbits, together with lesser consumption of small-to-medium avian species (‘other birds’; non-preferred prey), increased productivity, while greater diet diversity and lower consumption of rabbits was associated with reduced survival and population growth rate. Overall, our study illustrates how the diet of a predator species can be closely related to key individual vital rates, which, in turn, leave a measurable fingerprint on population dynamics within and among populations across large spatial scales.

[EN]: Birds of prey have been, in comparison to other avian groups, an uncommon study model, mainly due to the limitations imposed by their conservative life strategy (low population density and turnover). Nonetheless, they have attracted a strong interest from the point of view of conservation biology because many populations have been close to extinction and because of their recognised role in ecosystems as top predators and scavengers and as flagship species. Today, after more than a century of persecution, and with the exception of some vultures still very much affected by illegal poisoning, many populations of birds of prey have experienced significant recoveries in many regions of Spain and the European Mediterranean. These changes pose new challenges when addressing the conservation of raptors in the coming decades. On this basis, and from a preferentially Mediterranean perspective, we have focused our attention on the need of describing and quantifying the role of these birds as providers of both regulating (rodent pest control and removal of livestock carcasses) and cultural ecosystem services. Moreover, we revisited persisting conflicts with human interests (predation of game species) and call attention to the emergence of new conflicts with a strong social and media component such as the predation on live cattle by vultures. Also, the rampant humanization of the environment determines the need for new solutions to the growing, yet scarcely explored, problem of accidents in new infrastructures such as mortality in wind farms. Finally, we explored in depth the ecological response of birds of prey to large-scale habitat changes such as urbanisation and abandonment of marginal lands that are also expected to increase in the near future. We urgently need more scientific knowledge to provide adequate responses to the challenge of keeping healthy populations of avian predators and scavengers in a rapidly changing world. [ES]: Las aves de presa han sido, en comparación con otros grupos de aves, más raramente utilizadas como sujeto de estudios en ecología en razón de las limitaciones que impone su estrategia de vida (baja densidad de población, alta longevidad y baja natalidad). Por el contrario, han suscitado un gran interés desde el punto de vista de la biología de la conservación, debido a que sus poblaciones en muchos casos se han aproximado a la extinción, así como al reconocimiento de su papel en los ecosistemas como superpredadores y carroñeros como especies bandera. Hoy en día, tras más de un siglo de persecución, y con la excepción de algunos buitres todavía muy afectados por envenenamientos ilegales, muchas especies de aves de presa han experimentado importantes crecimientos poblacionales en muchas regiones de España y del Mediterráneo europeo. Este escenario plantea nuevos desafíos para abordar la conservación de las rapaces en las próximas décadas. Sobre esta base hemos focalizado nuestra atención en la necesidad de describir y cuantificar el papel de estas aves como proveedores de servicios ecosistémicos, tanto reguladores (control de plagas de roedores y eliminación de restos de ganado) como culturales y de apoyo. Por otra parte, llamamos la atención hacia el reavivamiento de conflictos con intereses humanos (predación sobre especies cinegéticas) y a la aparición de nuevos conflictos con un fuerte componente social y mediático como la predación de aves carroñeras sobre ganado vivo. De igual modo, la creciente humanización del medio y de las poblaciones de aves de presa de mayor tamaño determinan que haya que buscar nuevas soluciones a problemas ya conocidos como los accidentes en infraestructuras, pero que tienen nuevas facetas complejas y aun poco exploradas como la mortalidad en parques eólicos. Finalmente, nos adentramos en la respuesta de las aves de presa a cambios a gran escala en el hábitat, como la urbanización y el abandono de tierras marginales que ya están ocurriendo y se prevé que se incrementen en las próximas décadas. Debe generarse más conocimiento científico para poder dar adecuada respuesta al reto que supone mantener poblaciones sanas de aves predadoras y carroñeras en un mundo que cambia vertiginosamente. M. Food webs developed under classical theoretical models often depict simplistic interactions among trophic levels linked by predation (Hairston et al. 1960). As a result, extensive research efforts have been devoted to studying predator-prey interactions, often ignoring the contribution of scavenging in food-web dynamics. However, recent advancements in food-web theory have recognized the widespread and critical role that scavenging plays in stabilizing food webs in ecosystems throughout the world, thus suggesting that previous models may have greatly underestimated the importance of scavenging in food web research ( Wilson and Wolkovich 2011; Barton et al. 2013). Such disregard for the importance of scavenging likely stems from a number of factors, such as human aversion to decomposing matter, difficulties in identifying scavenged versus depredated materials, and the fact that most species utilize carrion opportunistically (DeVault et al. 2003). Nonetheless, recent population declines of a number of obligate scavengers (e.g., vultures) have drawn international attention to this important group of species, and have sparked a renaissance in research on scavenging (Koenig 2006; Sekercioglu 2006; Ogada et al. 2012a; Moleón and Sanchez-Zapata 2015; Buechley and Şekercioğlu 2016a, 2016b; Ogada et al. 2016)., This work was partially funded by project CGL2012-40013-C02-02 Spanish Government. Resumen del trabajo presentado al 27th International Congress for Conservation Biology (ICCB) y al 4th European Congress for Conservation Biology (ECCB), celebrados en Montpellier (Francia) del 2 al 6 de agosto de 2015., Political decisions and legal regulations may have important implications for the functioning of ecosystems and the services they provide. Due to the outbreak of the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in Europe, a sanitary regulation (EC 1774/2002) forced farmers to remove livestock carcasses from the fieldand transport them to authorized plants for their transformation or incineration. This led to a strong food shortage for vultures and other scavengersof conservation concern, withnegative effects on their populations and the ecosystem services they provide. Moreover, carcass transportation meant a new source of greenhouse gases (GHG) emission. As a result of these environmental costs,new legislation was approved (EC 142/2011) to allow farmers to abandon extensive livestock carcasses in certain areas (priority feeding areas for scavengers, ZPAEN), both in the field (where they die) and at feeding stations. This legislation was incorporated in Spain throughthe Royal Decree 1632/2011, which urgedeveryregion (autonomous community) to design their own ZPAEN.Our aim was to evaluate the potential effects of this new regulation on a) the conservation of endangered scavengers and b) the GHG savings. By means of a GAP analysis, we evaluated the effectiveness of the network of priority feeding areas for the conservation of vultures and other endangered facultative scavengers. Then, we quantified the GHGemissions associated with the transport of extensive livestock carcasses that would be saved after the implementation of the ZPAEN.Our results show that these priority feeding areas for scavengers enhancesboth scavenger conservation and the associated ecosystem services when comparedwith the effects of previous restrictive regulations. However, the regional regulations mustassimilate that obligate scavengers are highly mobile organisms that require large scale planning, so their improvement should focus on incorporating larger areas to the ZPAEN.

Among European breeding birds, those wintering in the Sahel region have undergone a sustained and severe decline. Long-term data show that variation in primary production of the Sahelian staging area significantly affects survival of many species, a relationship probably mediated by trophic resource availability. However, the physiological, hormonal and behavioural responses underlying this relationship remain unexplored. We present a potential explanation for the importance of prevailing conditions during winter to understand the population ecology and current trends of migratory species. We measured corticosterone levels in feathers of Egyptian vultures Neophron percnopterus grown in Africa and Europe, showing how conditions faced by birds during wintering periods result in the release of more corticosterone over time than when those individuals were on their summering grounds. This pattern was concordant with home-range size differences (c. 33 times larger in Africa than in Europe). We suggest that as wintering habitat of Egyptian vultures in the Sahel region has degraded during recent times, food availability has also been reduced. An increase in corticosterone during winter with a consequent increase in locomotor activity, for example, food searching behaviour, may normally be adaptive. However, enlarging home ranges could be futile if conditions are not better in the dispersal area, and costs of the higher corticosterone level, including energy expenditure from enhanced activity, may pose a significant trade-off. These physiological responses may be characteristic of other European trans-Saharan migrant birds that have undergone significant population declines.

Between 2000 and 2009 we studied the diet and breeding success of Egyptian Vultures Neophron percnopterus in southern Spain. Wild species accounted for 74.9% of prey items (n=1071) with a predominance of mammals (62.3%), followed by birds (20.8%) and reptiles (13.1%). Spatially, the diet was highly varied and not restricted to carcasses of livestock; wild Rabbits Oryctolagus cuniculus accounted for 54% of the overall remains. The spatial variability may reflect regional and local disparity in the availability of main prey. The temporal relationship between variation in trophic diversity and Vulture nesting productivity (both values showing a long-term decrease) might suggest a causal link between variation in diet and reproductive output. We hypothesize that high turnover rates could explain productivity variation as a consequence of the recruitment of less experienced individuals to the breeding population. This could in turn generate covariation between diet and reproductive output. © 2011 The Authors. In the current scenario of biodiversity crisis there is a growing need for identifying causes of changes in biodiversity at large scales. Here we assess factors driving raptor community structure in the Sahel, a region suffering a wide range of environmental degradation and a vital area for European migrant birds. Using road surveys, we estimated the effects of population size, human settlement patterns (e.g. urban vs. nomadic) and land use on the raptor community, taking into account the major natural role played by productivity. Total raptor richness values were similar to those described for other steppe regions of the world, with one super-abundant migrant species, the black kite Milvus migrans; however, richness of resident raptors was strikingly lower than expected, with most large body-size African species (both eagles and vultures) absent. Raptor richness was strongly correlated with human activities in a scale-dependent fashion. At a 25 km resolution, raptor richness was driven by habitat and productivity, with a positive response to crops. At a smaller scale, human population was positively related with wintering species richness but negatively with richness of resident ones, perhaps as a consequence of non-agricultural activities such as direct harvesting and different forms of habitat degradation (e.g. overgrazing or firewood collection). Subsistence economies in systems with low natural environmental heterogeneity and with a human population over carrying capacity, such as the Sahel, may lead to exhausted biological systems even in the absence of intensive agricultural or urban land-use changes, as shown by the deeply impoverished sedentary raptor community. Our results suggest that, because habitat and productivity seem to play a relevant role in driving species richness, climate change may have a major effect on the raptor community of the Sahel. © 2010 The Authors. Between 1996 and 2000 the appearance of bovine spongiform encephalopathy swiftly became one of the most serious public health and political crises concerning food safety ever experienced in the European Union (EU). Subsequent sanitary regulations led to profound changes in the management of livestock carcasses (i.e. the industrial destruction of around 80% of all animal carcasses), thereby threatening the last remaining healthy scavenger populations of the Old World and thus contradicting the long-term environmental policies of the EU.2. Several warning signs such as a decrease in breeding success, an apparent increase in mortality in young age classes of vultures and an increase in the number of cases of vultures attacking and killing cattle, as well as a halt in population growth, suggest that the decrease in the availability of food resources has had harmful effects on vulture populations.3. Between 2002 and 2005, a number of dispositions to the EU regulations (2003/322/CE 2005/830/CE) enabled conservation managers to adopt rapid solutions (i.e. the creation of vulture restaurants) aimed at satisfying the food requirements of vultures. However, these conservation measures may seriously modify habitat quality and have indirect detrimental effects on avian scavenger populations and communities.4. Synthesis and applications. Conservation managers and policy-makers need to balance the demands of public health protection and the long-term conservation of biodiversity. The regulations concerning carrion provisioning need to be more flexible and there needs to be greater compatibility between sanitary and environmental policies. We advocate policies that authorize the abandonment of livestock carcasses and favours populations of wild herbivores to help to maintain populations of avian scavengers. Conservation strategies should be incorporated into new European Commission regulations, which should be effective in 2011. © 2010 The Authors. Invasions of non-native species are one of the major causes of losses of native species. In some cases, however, non-natives may also have positive effects on native species. We investigated the potential facilitative effects of the North American red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) on the community of predators in southwestern Spain. To do so, we examined the diets of predators in the area and their population trends since introduction of the crayfish. Most predator species consumed red swamp crayfish, which sometimes occurred in over 50% of their diet samples. Moreover, the abundance of species preying on crayfish increased significantly in the area as opposed to the abundance of herbivores and to predator populations in other areas of Europe, where those predators are even considered threatened. Thus, we report the first case in which one non-native species is both beneficial because it provides prey for threatened species and detrimental because it can drive species at lower trophic levels to extinction. Increases in predator numbers that are associated with non-native species of prey, especially when some of these predators are also invasive non-natives, may increase levels of predation on other species and produce cascading effects that threaten native biota at longer temporal and larger spatial scales. Future management plans should include the complexity of interactions between invasive non-natives and the entire native community, the feasibility of successful removal of non-native species, and the potential social and economic interests in the area. © 2010 Society for Conservation Biology.

Es su solución a la política actual de retirar del campo la carroña de la que han dependido siempre las aves necrófagas. Pero las consecuencias pueden no ser tan positivas para la fauna a la que se pretende beneficiar. El asesoramiento científico se hace imprescindible en este asunto.

1. The desert locust Schistocerca gregaria has been considered a major pest since ancient times, as locust swarms holding millions of insects move throughout the Sahel, northern Africa, Middle East and southern Mediterranean countries. Most research has focused on the biology of the species and the development of strategies in locust control, but little is known about the place of locust pulses within food webs in which domestic herbivores and European long-distance migratory birds are also involved. 2. We evaluated the role of desert locust outbreaks in the food webs of the Sahelian region. We analysed the potential resource competition with domestic herbivores and the response of a generalist predator by assessing its diet and foraging behaviour in relation to the availability of locusts. 3. Stable isotope analyses revealed that little trophic overlap exists between desert locusts that feed on trees and shrubs and nomadic livestock that feed on grasses in the Sahelian savanna grasslands. These results suggest low resource competition with the main human resources in regions with little agricultural development. In addition, during an outbreak that occurred in winter, desert locusts were consumed by resident and long-distance migrant birds. This accounted for significant changes in the diet and foraging strategies of wintering generalist predators such as the black kite Milvus migrans. 4. Synthesis and applications. Our results raise questions about the need for spraying locust swarms in areas where economic losses are scant and wintering populations of European trans-Saharan migrant birds are high. A deeper insight into the ecological and economical role of these outbreaks is urgently needed, together with a reassessment of desert locust control in the Sahel. © 2007 The Authors.

In the last two decades, the Bonelli's Eagle had suffered one of the most severe population declines in Spain. This paper reviews the results of the studies on conservation biology of the Bonelli's eagle Spanish populations and synthesises the management implications for the recovery and conservation of the species which can be extracted from them, in order to make them accessible to regional and national wildlife agencies. From that compilation, it is concluded that the following actions must be undertaken: i) Adult mortality need to be reduced, mainly by mitigating electrocution and eliminating direct persecution, both near the nesting-site and within the full home range area. This involves close partnership and collaboration between administrations, power companies, hunters, and pigeon fanciers. ii) In Spain, the Bonelli's eagle is a mainly cliff-nesting raptor; therefore, the preservation of occupied and unoccupied nest-cliffs free from human disturbances is essential to avoid territory abandonment, decrease adult mortality, and maintain a high breeding success. Particular attention must be given to pairs breeding on low or accessible cliffs, or those with no alternative nest-cliffs available. These areas must be kept free from infrastructures and human presence. iii) To locate the settlement areas of juvenile individuals in each region, to ensure the correct population dynamics and conservation of the Spanish Bonelli's Eagle population. In this way, it is necessary to minimise non-territorial eagle mortality (which is mainly caused by electrocution and direct persecution), and to implement sensible hunting management practices. iv) Increasing prey availability in breeding territories is necessary in populations where prey scarcity is limiting breeding success. It would be a suitable measure for northern Spanish populations, avoiding extensive forest plantations and favouring the presence of open lands in territories, through the promotion of traditional land uses and sensible game management.

The rare Egyptian vulture (Neophron percnopterus) stands out among the Old World vultures (Family Accipitridae) because of its brightly ornamented head1, which is coloured yellow by carotenoid pigments, and its practice of feeding on faeces. Here we show that Egyptian vultures obtain these pigments from the excrement of ungulates. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration that faeces can be used as a source of carotenoids by a vertebrate.

Vultures and condors are among the most threatened avian species in the world due to the impacts of human activities. Negative perceptions can contribute to these threats as some vulture species have been historically blamed for killing livestock. This perception of conflict has increased in recent years, associated with a viral spread of partial and biased information through social media and despite limited empirical support for these assertions. Here, we highlight that magnifying infrequent events of livestock being injured by vultures through publically shared videos or biased news items negatively impact efforts to conserve threatened populations of avian scavengers. We encourage environmental agencies, researchers, and practitioners to evaluate the reliability, frequency, and context of reports of vulture predation, weighing those results against the diverse and valuable contributions of vultures to environmental health and human well‐being. We also encourage the development of awareness campaigns and improved livestock management practices, including commonly available nonlethal deterrence strategies, if needed. These actions are urgently required to allow the development of a more effective conservation strategy for vultures worldwide.

Vultures are one of the most threatened bird groups globally. Although many of the threats faced by vultures have been identified, the impact of human activities on the social life of vultures has received little attention. In this paper, we emphasize the need to integrate vulture sociality into conservation practice. First, we summarize current knowledge on vulture social behavior, and the evolutionary and ecological roots of their breeding systems. We describe the existence of contrasting gradients in social foraging strategies and hierarchical social structures among colonial and territorial breeders associated with species (and population) reliance on carrion differing in size and predictability. We also highlight the potential role of vulture gatherings in maintaining population-level social structures and for mate-finding given high mate-selectivity. Next, based on this social framework, we discuss the impact of human activities on social foraging, territory structures, resource partitioning processes, and mating dynamics. However, little is known about how disruptions of social habits may have contributed to vulture population declines and/or may impede their recovery. Lastly, we provide directions for future research on vulture socio-ecology that may improve current conservation efforts. We encourage researchers and wildlife managers to pay more attention to natural carrion diversity underlying vulture social system diversity, especially when implementing supplementary feeding programs, and to consider the complex mating and settlement dynamics in reintroduction programs. Overall, we stress that understanding the complex social life of vultures is critical to harmonize their conservation with anthropogenic activities.

Las dinámicas poblacionales de ungulados silvestres se caracterizan por presentar en altas densidades episodios de fuertes mortalidades asociados a brotes de enfermedades, algunas de ellas podrían estar transmitidas por garrapatas. En este trabajo de fin de grado se analiza la presencia de varios patógenos (géneros: Ehrlichia sp, Anaplasma sp, Neorickettsia sp, Babesia sp y Theileria sp) en sangre de gamos (Dama dama), ciervos (Cervus elaphus) y cabra montés (Capra pyrenaica) del Parque Natural Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y las Villas, que murieron súbitamente y presentaron signos de anemia hemolítica. Un total de 20 (10 sanos, 10 enfermos) muestras fueron analizadas mediante PCR y se secuenciaron siempre que fue posible, para su identificación. Se encontraron 16 positivos para Theileria spp con una prevalencia del 80% y 14 positivos para Anaplasma spp con una prevalencia del 70% y coinfección en el 55% de las muestras. Las muestras analizadas fueron portadoras de Theileria capreoli, T. OT3, T. cervi y Anaplasma bovis. Los ungulados silvestres son un importante reservorio de los patógenos identificados, pero las altas prevalencias detectadas sugieren que no sean causantes directos de los episodios de mortalidad masiva sino patógenos oportunistas que contribuyen a la muerte del animal en interacción con otros factores. The population dynamics of wild ungulates are characterized by presenting high-density episodes of high mortality associated with disease outbreaks, some of them could be transmitted by ticks. This project analyzes the presence of several pathogens (genus: Ehrlichia sp, Anaplasma sp, Neorickettsia sp, Babesia sp y Theileria sp) in the blood of fallow deer (Dama dama), deer (Cervus elaphus) and ibex (Capra pyrenaica) of the Natural Park of Sierras de Cazorla, Segura and las Villas. A total of 20 samples (10 healthy and 10 sick) were analyzed by PCR and sequenced whenever possible for its identification. Sixteen were found positive for Theileria spp with a prevalence of 80% and 14 positive for Anaplasma spp with a prevalence of 70%, and coinfection in 55% of the samples. The analyzed samples were carriers of Theileria capreoli, T. OT3, T. cervi and Anaplasma bovis. Wild ungulates are important reservoir of the identified pathogens. However, the high prevalence detected suggest that they do not play a role as direct responsible of massive mortalities, but act as opportunistic parasites contributing to the death of the animal in interaction with other factors.

El funcionamiento de los ecosistemas incluye todos aquellos ciclos de materia y energía, así como la interacción entre los organismos. El funcionamiento natural ha sido alterado por las actividades humanas, especialmente la biodiversidad, provocando la modificación de las interacciones entre las distintas especies. Actualmente, la comunidad científica ha reconocido una crisis de biodiversidad por causas antropogénicas asociada a la extinción de especies o la introducción de especies exóticas. Esta pérdida de biodiversidad puede desembocar en efectos negativos sobre el bienestar humano, ya que dicho bienestar está asociado con los ecosistemas y sus componentes (las sociedades obtienen beneficios de los ecosistemas). Todos aquellos beneficios que los humanos obtienen de los ecosistemas son servicios ecosistémicos, como por ejemplo alimentos, herramientas, el mantenimiento de hábitats o incluso aspectos culturales relacionados. Uno de los grupos taxonómicos más relacionado con los humanos es el de los ungulados. Sin embargo, las relaciones entre los humanos y los ungulados silvestres dependen del contexto. En los países en vías de desarrollo las poblaciones de ungulados silvestres están en descenso, mientras que en los países desarrollados sus poblaciones están creciendo tanto en abundancia como en distribución. Este proceso, denominado “rewilding” en inglés y que podríamos traducir como reconstrucción de los ecosistemas, ha favorecido la aparición de interacciones negativas entre los humanos y los ungulados silvestres, como por ejemplo los daños a la agricultura y a la silvicultura. Para evitar o mitigar estos conflictos se emplean distintas herramientas de gestión como el vallado o los aportes suplementarios. Por lo tanto, la investigación sobre los ungulados y su relación con las personas debe abordarse desde una perspectiva socio-ecológica. Esta tesis se centra en las relaciones entre las personas y los ungulados silvestres, tanto en las interacciones positivas como negativas, y las herramientas de gestión empleadas para la mitigación de los conflictos. Concretamente esta tesis pretende evaluar: i) el estado del arte de la investigación sobre las interacciones humanoungulados (Capítulo 1); ii) los beneficios y perjuicios que proveen los ungulados silvestres para dos agentes implicados: la comunidad científica y los pastores (Capítulo 2); iii) el solapamiento de nicho entre la cabra montesa (Capra pyrenaica), especie nativa, y el arrui (Ammotragus lervia), especie exótica en la península ibérica, como ejemplo de un conflicto de conservación (Capítulo 3); iv) los efectos de los aportes suplementarios como herramienta de gestión sobre la especie objeto de la gestión (el arrui), otras especies no objetivo y las alteraciones en las propiedades edáficas (Capítulos 4 y 5). En el Capítulo 6 discutimos los resultados obtenidos en los capítulos anteriores. Para establecer el estado del arte con respecto a las interacciones que se dan entre los humanos y los ungulados silvestres, revisamos las publicaciones científicas sobre este tema. Este capítulo mostró que los artículos científicos abordan los estudios, principalmente, desde la perspectiva de los conflictos, teniendo en poca consideración los servicios ecosistémicos. En general, la mayoría de las publicaciones tienen en consideración a agentes implicados, siendo los principales actores sociales relacionados con los ungulados silvestres los gestores ambientales y los cazadores. Además, las herramientas de gestión empleadas para la mitigación de los conflictos no suelen ser evaluadas, aun siendo recomendadas algunas de ellas como el control letal y el uso de barreras y elementos disuasorios. En el Capítulo 2 abordamos las interacciones entre humanos y ungulados silvestres desde la perspectiva del nuevo término “Contribuciones de la Naturaleza para las Personas” (NCP por sus siglas en inglés) de dos de los agentes implicados menos considerados en las publicaciones científicas, es decir, los propios investigadores y los pastores. En este trabajo examinamos y comparamos las prioridades científicas a partir de los estudios publicados y las percepciones de los pastores respecto a los NCP proporcionados por los ungulados silvestres. Revisamos artículos científicos sobre los NCP proporcionados por los ungulados en España y realizamos entrevistas en profundidad a pastores en sistemas ganaderos extensivos donde los ungulados domésticos coexisten con los silvestres. Después comparamos si las prioridades científicas coinciden con lo percibido por los pastores. Ambos agentes implicados destacaron más los NCP negativos que los positivos, aunque éstos no coincidían en importancia. Respecto a los NCP negativos, los pastores no mencionaron la alteración del suelo, los daños a la silvicultura, a la salud humana, las colisiones de tráfico y los conflictos entre colectivos humanos. Consideraron como principales aspectos negativos de los ungulados los daños a la vegetación, la competencia por el pasto, los daños a otros animales de interés económico, los daños agrícolas y la transmisión de enfermedades. Por otro lado, mientras que en las publicaciones la caza deportiva adquiría gran importancia como NCP positivo, los pastores ni siquiera la tuvieron en cuenta, siendo para éstos agentes implicados la regulación de otros organismos el beneficio más importante. Estos resultados pueden tener dos implicaciones. Un mayor énfasis en los NCP negativos puede reforzar la idea de que los ungulados pueden suponer una amenaza para las personas en lugar de contribuir positivamente al bienestar social. El hecho de que las investigaciones no coincidan con los intereses de los pastores puede afectar a la tolerancia social hacia estas especies ya que los daños experimentados o percibidos no son evaluados. Nuestros resultados muestran la relevancia que supone considerar el conocimiento local, en este caso de los pastores, que es uno de los aspectos destacados por el enfoque que hemos tomado, es decir, desde los NCP. Con respecto al Capítulo 3, evaluamos la competencia potencial entre la cabra montés nativa y el arrui exótico estableciendo el solapamiento del nicho en condiciones de coexistencia en la península ibérica. Para ello comparamos el nicho trófico midiendo el contenido de isótopos estables de δ15N y δ13C en pelo, así como el nicho ambiental a partir de modelos de nicho basados en datos de presencia a escala fina. Después evaluamos si ambas especies coocurren espacialmente, o existe segregación espacial como mecanismo de facilitación de coexistencia. Nuestros resultados apuntaron a que ambas especies comparten un nicho trófico y un nicho ambiental similares. Encontramos una asociación espacial negativa entre la cabra montesa y el arrui. Por tanto, las especies son ecológicamente similares y es posible que la segregación espacial detectada favorezca la coexistencia entre ambas en las sierras mediterráneas que cohabitan. Para conocer los efectos de los aportes suplementarios para evitar daños agrícolas, en el Capítulo 4 evaluamos sus efectos en el comportamiento espacial del arrui, así como el uso de los comederos por parte de especies no objetivo de esos aportes. Para ello marcamos nueve arruis con collares GPS/GSM para establecer sus áreas de campeo sin aportes y con aportes, y lo mismo para el número de visitas a los comederos. Después comparamos ese área de campeo estimada y el número de visitas entre periodos para comprobar si hubo variaciones debidas a los aportes. Además, monitoreamos con cámaras de fototrampeo ocho los comederos para identificar que otras especies podían estar haciendo uso de los comederos. Obtuvimos que las áreas de campeo cambiaron para algunos individuos marcados, aunque no todos acudieron a los comederos durante los aportes. El número de visitas a los comederos se incrementó durante los aportes suplementarios. Identificamos a quince especies no objetivo que acudían a los comederos, especialmente el jabalí. Los arruis y los jabalíes mostraron una segregación temporal en cuanto al uso de los comederos. Nuestros resultados sugieren que la efectividad de los aportes suplementarios es limitada en cuanto al comportamiento espacial del arrui, por lo que la reducción de daños agrícolas es limitada. Continuando con los aportes suplementarios como herramienta de gestión evaluada, en el Capítulo 5, evaluamos los efectos de esta herramienta sobre el suelo de un área montañosa de clima mediterráneo. Evaluamos este aspecto porque las propiedades fisicoquímicas y biológicas del suelo pueden verse alteradas debido a la concentración de la fauna silvestre donde se deposita la comida suplementaria. Para ello tomamos muestras de suelo de tres comederos y comparamos las características del suelo entre tres áreas: suelo de los comederos, suelo de alrededor de los comederos, y un suelo de referencia no alterado por los comederos. Nuestros resultados sugirieron que las propiedades físicas del suelo no se veían afectadas en los comederos. Sin embargo, la conductividad eléctrica, la concentración de nutrientes, la actividad microbiana y las comunidades microbianas en los comederos sí se alteraron debido a los aportes y la concentración de fauna, siendo los efectos alrededor de los comederos más débiles. La dinámica edáfica pudo verse modificada debido a estas alteraciones detectadas y contribuir al cambio global. Finalmente, en el Capítulo 6 discutimos los resultados obtenidos en los capítulos previos, abordando también las limitaciones de cada uno, las implicaciones para la conservación de la biodiversidad y las perspectivas futuras sobre la relación entre los ungulados silvestres y los humanos Ecosystem functioning includes all cycling materials and energy, the interactions among organisms and the abiotic system. This functioning has been modified due to human activities, especially the biodiversity, which has provoked alterations of interactions among species. Currently the scientific community has recognized a biodiversity crisis because of human activities, which could affect negatively to human wellbeing by means of losing ecosystems and its components. All those benefits that people obtain from ecosystems are ecosystem services (ES), as for example food, tools, maintenance of habitats or even cultural aspects. Historically, our species has been linked to many species and among them ungulates deserve a chapter of their own. Ungulates are animal species closely related with human societies. Relations between humans and wild ungulates vary depending of the context. In developing countries ungulate populations are declining whereas in developed countries they are increasing in abundance and distribution. This rewilding process has contributed to the rise negative interactions between humans and between wild ungulates, as for example agriculture or silviculture damage. To avoid or mitigate these conflicts people use different management tools such as fencing or supplementary feeding. So, research about ungulates and their relations with people should be done from a social-ecological perspective. This thesis focuses on the human-ungulate relations, both positive and negative interactions, and the evaluation of management tools employed to mitigate those negative impacts. Specifically this thesis aims to assess: i) the state of the art of research in human-ungulates relations (Chapter 1); ii) the services and disservices provided by wild ungulates for two stakeholders: scientists and shepherds (Chapter 2); the niche overlap and potential competition between the native Iberian ibex (Capra pyrenaica) and the exotic aoudad (Ammotragus lervia) as a paradigm of conservation conflict (Chapter 3); the effects of supplementary feeding effects on the target species (aoudad), other non-target species and soil properties (Chapters 4 and 5). Finally, in Chapter 6, the results of previous chapters are discussed. First (Chapter 1), we reviewed scientific publications to establish the state of the art about human-ungulate relations. We showed that most scientific publications approach this relations from the perspective of conflicts, being the ES less considered in that studies. Also, most of the publications included environmental managers and hunters as the main social actors regarding human-ungulate relations. Moreover, management tools employed to mitigate ungulate damages to human interests rarely were evaluated, and lethal control and the use of barriers were the main strategies recommended to mitigate or avoid damages. In Chapter 2, we approached to the human-ungulate interactions from the perspective of researchers and shepherds and the framework of ecosystem services based on the categories of beneficial nature’s contributions to people (NCP; Díaz et al., 2018) . We examined and compared scientific research and shepherds’ perceptions regarding the provision of NCP by wild ungulates. We reviewed scientific articles of NCP provided by ungulates in Spain and conducted questionnaires regarding NCP to shepherds in farming systems of Spain where domestic and wild ungulates cohabit. Then, we compared whether the scientific priorities match with those perceived by shepherds. Both stakeholders highlighted more detrimental than beneficial NCP, there were some mismatches between scientific priorities and shepherds’ perceptions. Regarding detrimental NCP, soil alteration, damage to silviculture, human safety, traffic collision and human-human conflicts were frequently studied but not mentioned by shepherds. In contrast, shepherds mainly considered vegetation damage, grazing competence, damage to animals with economic interests, crop damage and disease transmission to livestock as important detrimental NCP. Concerning beneficial NCP, whilst hunting was prominent in the publications, shepherds did not conceived it as an important beneficial contribution and considered the regulation of other organisms as an important benefit. These results can have twofold implications. The emphasis on detrimental NCP can reinforce the idea that ungulates can threaten humans rather than contribute to societies’ wellbeing. The fact that research does not address the interests of shepherds can affect the social tolerance towards ungulates as the damages experienced or perceived by shepherds are not studied. Our results show the relevance of considering local knowledge systems of shepherds, something highlighted by the NCP approach. Regarding Chapter 3, we evaluated the potential competition between the native Iberian ibex and the exotic aoudad measuring the niche overlap under cohabit conditions in the Iberian Peninsula. To do that, we compared the trophic niche by using the content of stable isotopes δ15N and δ13C in the hair, and the environmental niche by modelling habitat based on fine-scale presence records. Then we assessed both species’ co-occurrence to test for spatial segregation. Our results indicated that both species shared a similar trophic niche, showed a similar distribution of suitable areas and that their environmental niches were similar. Moreover, negative spatial association was found between the aoudad and Iberian ibex. So, both species are ecologically similar and suggest that spatial segregation might have favoured their co-existence in semiarid Mediterranean mountains where they cohabit. In order to clarify the effect of diversionary feeding (i.e. specific use of supplementary feeding to avoid crop damage), in Chapter 4 we evaluated its effect in the spatial behaviour of the aoudad. Also, we assessed the use of the diversionary feeding stations (DFS) by non-target species. Nine aoudads were tracked with GPS/GSM collars to establish their home ranges and the visits to the DFS. We compared the home ranges and the number of GPS locations in the DFS before and meanwhile food was available at them. Moreover, eight DFS were monitored with camera traps to identify which other species used the DFS. We found that home ranges varied for some individuals and that not all the tracked animals used the DFS. The number of locations in the DFS increased when food was available. Furthermore, other fifteen non-target species of birds and mammals used DFS, especially the wild boar. Aoudads and wild boars segregated temporally in their use of the DFS. These results suggest that diversionary feeding had little effect on the spatial behaviour of the aoudad and benefited other conflictive species. Continuing with the diversionary feeding as a management tool, we evaluated the effect of this tool on semiarid Mediterranean mountain soils, because physicochemical and biological soil properties can be altered due to the concentration of wildlife in areas where food is deposited (Chapter 5). We collected soil samples from three DFS and compared soil characteristics from three areas: feeding stations (FS), contour area (C; surrounding the feeding stations) and a reference soil (RS; not influenced by feeding stations). Our results suggested no effects on soil physical properties. However, we found that diversionary feeding altered electrical conductivity, nutrient concentration, microbial activity and microbial communities at FS, but effects were weaker in the C. Soil functionality could change due to these alterations of soil dynamics. Finally, Chapter 6 discusses the results presented in this thesis, the limitations of each chapter and the biodiversity conservation implications and future perspectives about wild ungulates and human relations.

En este estudio se analiza la ecología alimentaria de dos especies de accipitriformes, el Águila esteparia (Aquila nipalensis) y el busardo moro (Buteo rufinus), presentes en las estepas del centro y sur de Asia. Para ello analizamos el contenido de restos alimenticios en egagrópilas recogidas en 1999 en Kazajstán y evaluamos el solapamiento de la dieta mediante el índice de Pianka. En total se examinaron 223 egagrópilas, 118 correspondientes al busardo moro y 105 al águila esteparia. Los resultados mostraron que el busardo consumió un total de 17 especies diferentes mientras que el águila 12, coincidiendo en 10. Para el busardo, la presa más frecuente son los micromamíferos (57,4%), siendo estos también los que más biomasa aportan a la dieta (80,9%). La presa más abundante para el águila esteparia son los insectos (54,8%), pero la que más biomasa le aporta a la dieta son el grupo de los micromamíferos (87,9%). El grado de solapamiento entre las dos especies fue de 0,54 indicando un solapamiento medio. Este solapamiento es debido a que consumen presas comunes, aunque también puede deberse a que la estepa es un hábitat con poca biodiversidad tanto animal como vegetal y las técnicas de caza empleadas. This study analyzes the trophic ecology of the species of accipitriformes, the long-legged buzzard (Buteo rufinus) and the steppe eagle (Aquila nipalensis), present in the steppes of central and southern Asia. To do this, we analyzed the content of the food remains in the areas recognized in 1999 in Kazakhstan and evaluated the diet overlap by Pianka index. A total of 223 pellets were examined, 118 corresponding to the long-legged buzzard and 105 to the steppe eagle. The results showed the buzzard consumed a total of 17 different species and the eagle 12, coinciding in 10. For the buzzard, the most frequent prey was the micromammals (57.4%), as well as the prey group that most contribute to the biomass intake (80.9%). Insects were the most frecuent prey for the steppe eagle (54.8%), but the group that most biomass consumed was the micromammals (87.9%). The degree of diet overlap between the two raptors was 0.54 indicating a medium overlapping. This overlap is due to the fact that they consume common prey, although it may also be due to the fact that the steppe is a habitat with little animal and plant biodiversity and the hunting techniques employed.

The relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in supporting human well-being through the provision of ecosystem services is broadly recognized. In recent decades, there has been an increase in the research on the crucial role of carrion and scavengers in ecosystem functioning. Vertebrate scavengers are providers of multiple ecosystem services such as nutrient cycling, disease and pest control, and recreational services such as ecotourism. Nevertheless, obligate scavengers (i.e., vultures) and many large facultative scavengers (e.g., apex predators) constitute one of the most threatened functional group worldwide. Interestingly, Spain still holds a relatively healthy population of vultures and a wide array of facultative scavengers. Thus, Spain becomes one of the main responsibles for the conservation of European scavengers. This thesis focuses on the ecosystem services provided by vertebrate scavengers in Spain from a social-ecological perspective. Specifically, this thesis aims: i) to review the state of the art on the research on carrion, scavenging and associated ecosystem functions and services, social perceptions and attitudes toward scavengers, as well as indigenous and local knowledge (ILK) on carrion and scavenging (Chapter 1); ii) to spatially quantify the greenhouse gases (GHG) emitted by supplanting the natural removal of livestock carcasses by scavengers through the artificial carcass collection and transport from extensive farms to processing plants (Chapter 2); iii) assess the conservation and environmental consequences of the protection areas for the feeding of necrophagous species of European interest (PAFs) in Spain (Chapter 3); iv) to examine farmer perceptions of the ecosystem services provided by scavenging vertebrates in Spain (Chapter 4); v) to evaluate the similarities and contradictions between ILK and scientific knowledge (SK) regarding the scavenging service provided by vertebrates in extensive livestock farming systems (Chapter 5); and vi) to discuss the main results of the previous chapters, with special emphasis on the conservation implications and future perspectives (Chapter 6). Chapter 1 presents an overview of the main research topics addressed through the rest of the thesis. This introductory chapter revealed that the ecosystem function and services provided by scavengers have been scarcely studied until very recently. Moreover, research on social perceptions and attitudes towards scavengers, as well as indigenous and local knowledge on carrion and scavenging, remains virtually unexplored. In Chapter 2, we assessed the novel source of GHG emissions emerged following the implementation of a controversial European sanitary regulation (EC 1774/2002). After the mad cow crisis in Europe, the sanitary regulation required the collection of livestock carcasses from farms and their transformation or destruction in authorized plants. This situation had not only negative impacts on the conservation of scavengers but it also generated an unprecedented source of GHG emissions through the artificial elimination of livestock carcasses. To spatially calculate the GHG emissions, first, peninsular Spain was divided into 10 x 10 km UTM grids and the carcasses biomass generated per year was estimated for each grid. Second, we calculated the distance covered by trucks in the transport of carcasses from the center of each grid to intermediate and/or processing plants. Third, the GHG emissions associated with the transport of livestock carcasses were estimated according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) methodology. In addition, information from the National Biodiversity Inventory was used to analyze the relationship between the estimated GHG emissions with the distance from the center of each grid to the nearest breeding site of the four Spanish species of vultures, and with vulture richness per grid. Results showed that supplanting the natural removal of dead extensive livestock by scavengers with carcass collection and transport to intermediate and processing plants meant the emission of 77,344 metric tons of CO2 equivalent to the atmosphere per year, in addition to annual payments of ca. $50 million to insurance companies. Paradoxically, the areas with the highest levels of GHG emissions coincided with areas holding the highest densities of vultures. Thus, findings from this chapter support the return to a traditional and natural scenario in which scavengers freely remove livestock carcasses.In Chapter 3, the network of protection areas for the feeding of necrophagous species of European interest (PAFs) was evaluated. In Europe, in an attempt to mitigate the negative impacts of the abovementioned, restrictive sanitary regulation (EC 1774/2002), a new regulation was approved (EC 142/2011) to allow farmers to leave the carcasses of extensive livestock within PAFs. To evaluate the Spanish PAFs network, first, all the Spanish autonomous communities were contacted to gather information about the characteristics of the PAFs. Second, we calculated the extensive livestock carrion biomass available inside PAFs. Third, data from the National Biodiversity Inventory were used to quantify the percentage of breeding distribution of the targeted and non-targeted scavenger species as well as the threatened and non-threatened species falling within PAFs. Fourth, we calculated the overlap between PAFs and the home range of 71 GPS-tracked vultures of four species, determining the use of the different administrative units by individuals and populations. Additionally, published studies on the home range of GPS-marked vultures in Spain were reviewed. Fifth, the potential savings in GHG emissions associated with the transport of livestock carcasses in relation to the pre-PAF scenario were estimated. The results displayed that the majority of the autonomous communities established PAFs in their territories, although the design criteria were variable. The extensive livestock carrion biomass potentially available for scavengers within PAFs was 33,474 tons per year, which represented 35% of the annual extensive livestock biomass generated in peninsular Spain. The breeding distribution of the targeted species was better represented within PAFs than that of the non-targeted species. Similarly, breeding distribution of threatened species was better represented than the one of non-threatened species. The overlap between PAFs and the home range of GPS-tracked vulture populations ranged between 63% and 100%, whereas at the individual level, it ranged between 21% and 100%. The home area of these and other populations of GPS-marked vultures in peninsular Spain covered 3–14 autonomous communities and 1–4 countries. At the individual level, vultures used an average of 3.4 autonomous communities and 1.5 countries. The implementation of the PAF network implied a potential reduction of ca. 56% of GHG emissions compared to the previous scenario. Thus, the implementation of PAFs was potentially an important improvement compared to the previous scenario. However, the new regulation could be improved by considering the overall distribution of additional scavenger species and by supra-regional and supra-national coordination and management.In Chapter 4, the farmer perceptions about the ecosystem services provided by vertebrate scavenger in Spain were assessed. To do this, 276 face-to-face surveys with farmers in 7 large extensive livestock systems were conducted. The findings indicated that the scavenging service (i.e., carrion consumption) was perceived by farmers as the most important service provided by scavengers. Interestingly, a "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" paradox was detected, since the same species and species within the same guild can be dually perceived as beneficial or harmful depending on their consideration as primarily as scavengers or predators, respectively. Vultures were perceived by farmers as the most beneficial taxonomic group, followed by other raptors, non-raptor birds, and mammals. Farmers perceived the importance of scavengers as providers of ecosystem services when species had a more restricted distribution and their populations were perceived as declining. By contrast, farmers perceived that the provision of scavenging services increased with broader scavenger distributions. Moreover, in the scavenger communities with higher functional diversity, farmers perceived a higher capacity of the scavenger guild to provide ecosystem services. Farmers performing traditional livestock practices such as transhumance and the abandonment of livestock carcasses in the field had higher knowledge on scavengers and positive perception of them. In contrast, farmers having a higher livestock numbers, whether there were any attacks on livestock by scavengers, and having carcass removal insurance in the past, showed more negative perceptions of scavengers. In general, results from this chapter support the implementation of conservation policies in Europe that favor traditional extensive farming systems and strengthen the link between farmers and scavengers. In Chapter 5, we examined the similarities and contradictions between shepherds’ ILK and SK on the scavenging service provided by the vertebrate scavengers in Spain. To do so, 73 face-to-face surveys with livestock farmers of 2 extensive livestock systems were conducted. In addition, we carried out the monitoring of the consumption of 45 livestock carcasses by scavengers with camera traps. The level of consistency between the two knowledge systems was evaluated for three categories of shepherds’ age and experience and at different levels of ecological organization (i.e., species and community). Overall, a high consistency between ILK and SK was found, particularly at the species level, which was also consistent over the range of shepherd ages and experience. At the species level, the scavengers’ occurrence at carcasses observed by shepherds was highly correlated with the occurrence calculated from camera traps in both study areas. Likewise, the shepherds’ consideration of each species as provider of the scavenging service and the carrion biomass consumed by the species calculated from camera traps were also highly related in both study areas. At the community level, no differences were found between ILK and SK regarding the mean detection time of carcasses by scavengers, whereas there were differences in the mean consumption time of carcasses, being lower for ILK than the calculated with trap cameras. In general, these results support the integration of ILK and SK into the management strategies of vertebrate scavengers. Finally, Chapter 6 discusses the main results obtained in the previous chapters, including conservation and policy implications, limitations and caveats, and future perspectives. Overall, through addressing some important gaps regarding carrion, scavenging and associated ecosystem services, as well as social perceptions and ILK on vertebrate scavengers in Spain from a social-ecological perspective, this thesis emphasizes the need to i) link sanitary and environmental policies, ii) support the implementation of policies that favor traditional extensive farming systems, and iii) integrate ILK and SK into the conservation strategies of vertebrate scavengers. La relación entre biodiversidad, funcionamiento de los ecosistemas y bienestar humano a través de la provisión de servicios ecosistémicos es ampliamente reconocida. En las últimas décadas, ha aumentado notablemente la investigación sobre el papel crucial de la carroña y los carroñeros en el funcionamiento de los ecosistemas. Los carroñeros vertebrados son proveedores de múltiples servicios ecosistémicos tales como el ciclo de nutrientes, el control de plagas y enfermedades, y servicios recreativos como el ecoturismo. Sin embargo, los carroñeros estrictos (i.e., los buitres) y muchos carroñeros facultativos (e.g., los grandes depredadores) constituyen uno de los grupos funcionales más amenazados en todo el mundo. De manera interesante, España todavía posee una población relativamente sana de buitres y una amplia diversidad de carroñeros facultativos. Por lo tanto, España se convierte en uno de los principales responsables de la conservación de los carroñeros europeos. Esta tesis se centra en los servicios ecosistémicos que proporcionan los carroñeros vertebrados en España, desde una perspectiva socio-ecológica. Específicamente, esta tesis pretende: i) revisar el estado del arte en la investigación sobre carroña, funciones y servicios ecosistémicos asociados al consumo de carroña, percepciones sociales y actitudes hacia los carroñeros, así como el conocimiento indígena y local (CIL) sobre los procesos relacionados con el consumo de carroña. (Capítulo 1); ii) cuantificar espacialmente los gases de efecto invernadero (GEI) emitidos al suplantar la eliminación natural de los cadáveres de ganado por los carroñeros a través de la recogida y el transporte artificial de los cadáveres desde las explotaciones ganaderas en extensivo hasta las plantas de transformación (Capítulo 2); iii) evaluar las consecuencias de conservación y ambientales de las zonas de protección para la alimentación de especies necrófagas de interés comunitario (ZPAEN) en España (Capítulo 3); iv) examinar las percepciones de los ganaderos y ganaderas sobre los servicios ecosistémicos proporcionados por los carroñeros vertebrados en España (Capítulo 4); v) evaluar las similitudes y contradicciones entre el CIL y el conocimiento científico (CC) con respecto al servicio de consumo de carroña proporcionado por los carroñeros vertebrados en los sistemas ganaderos en extensivo (Capítulo 5); y vi) discutir los principales resultados de los capítulos anteriores, con especial énfasis en las implicaciones para la conservación y las perspectivas futuras (Capítulo 6). El Capítulo 1 presenta una descripción general de los principales temas de investigación abordados en el resto de la tesis. Este capítulo introductorio reveló que las funciones y los servicios proporcionados por los carroñeros han sido poco estudiados hasta hace muy poco. Por otra parte, la investigación sobre las percepciones sociales y las actitudes hacia los carroñeros, así como el CIL sobre los procesos relacionados con el consumo de carroña, permanece prácticamente inexplorada. En el Capítulo 2, se evaluó una nueva fuente de emisiones de GEI surgida tras la implementación de una controvertida regulación sanitaria europea (CE 1774/2002). Después de la crisis de las vacas locas en Europa, una regulación sanitaria exigía que los cadáveres de ganado se recogieran de las explotaciones ganaderas y se transformaran o destruyeran en plantas autorizadas. Esta situación no solo tuvo impactos negativos en la conservación de los carroñeros, sino que también generó una fuente sin precedentes de emisiones de GEI a través de la eliminación artificial de los cadáveres de ganado. Para calcular espacialmente las emisiones de GEI, primero, se dividió la España peninsular en cuadrículas UTM de 10 x 10 km y, para cada una, se estimó la biomasa de cadáveres generados por año. En segundo lugar, se calculó la distancia recorrida por los camiones en el transporte de los cadáveres desde el centro de cada cuadrícula hasta las plantas intermedias y/o de transformación. En tercer lugar, se calcularon las emisiones de GEI asociadas con el transporte de los cadáveres de ganado según la metodología del Grupo Intergubernamental de Expertos sobre el Cambio Climático (IPCC). Además, se utilizó información del Inventario Nacional de Biodiversidad para analizar la relación entre las emisiones estimadas de GEI y la distancia desde el centro de cada cuadrícula hasta el sitio de cría más cercano de las cuatro especies de buitres españoles, y con la riqueza de buitres por cuadrícula. Los resultados mostraron que suplantar la eliminación natural del ganado en extensivo muerto por los carroñeros con la recogida y el transporte de los cadáveres a plantas intermedias y de transformación supuso la emisión de 77.344 toneladas métricas de CO2 equivalente a la atmósfera por año, además de pagos anuales de alrededor de 40 millones de euros a compañías de seguros. Paradójicamente, las áreas con los niveles más altos de emisiones de GEI coincidieron con las áreas con mayor abundancia de buitres. En consecuencia, los hallazgos de este capítulo apoyan el retorno al escenario tradicional y natural en el que los carroñeros eliminan libremente los cadáveres de ganado. En el Capítulo 3, se evaluó la red de zonas de protección para la alimentación de especies necrófagas de interés comunitario (i.e., ZPAEN). En Europa, como un intento de mitigar los impactos negativos de la restrictiva regulación sanitaria antes mencionada (CE 1774/2002), se aprobó una nueva regulación (CE 142/2011) para permitir a los ganaderos dejar los cadáveres de ganado en extensivo dentro de las ZPAEN. Para evaluar la red española de ZPAEN, primero se contactó con todas las comunidades autónomas para recabar información sobre sus ZPAEN. En segundo lugar, se calculó la biomasa de carroña de ganado en extensivo disponible dentro de las ZPAEN. En tercer lugar, se utilizaron datos del Inventario Nacional de Biodiversidad para cuantificar el porcentaje del área de distribución de la población reproductora de las especies carroñeras objetivo y no-objetivo, así como de las especies amenazadas y no amenazadas incluido en las ZPAEN. En cuarto lugar, se analizó la superposición entre las ZPAEN y el área de campeo de 71 buitres de cuatro especies seguidos vía GPS, determinando el uso de las diferentes unidades administrativas por individuos y poblaciones. Además, se revisaron los estudios publicados sobre el área de campeo de buitres seguidos por GPS en España. En quinto lugar, se estimaron los ahorros potenciales en emisiones de GEI asociadas con el transporte de los cadáveres de ganado en relación con el escenario pre-ZPAEN. Los resultados mostraron que la mayoría de las comunidades autónomas establecieron las ZPAEN en sus territorios, aunque los criterios de diseño fueron variables. La biomasa de carroña de ganado en extensivo potencialmente disponible para los carroñeros dentro de las ZPAEN fue de 33.474 toneladas por año, lo que representó el 35% de la biomasa anual generada en la España peninsular. El área de distribución de las especies objetivo estuvo mejor representada en las ZPAEN que el de las especies no-objetivo. De manera similar, el área de distribución de las especies amenazadas estaba mejor representado que el de las especies no amenazadas. La superposición entre las ZPAEN y el área de campeo de las poblaciones de buitres seguidos vía GPS osciló entre un 63% y 100%, mientras que a nivel de individuo varió entre el 21% y 100%. El área de campeo de estas y otras poblaciones de buitres seguidos por GPS en la España peninsular abarcó de 3 a 14 comunidades autónomas y de 1 a 4 países. A nivel de individuo, los buitres utilizaron un promedio de 3,4 comunidades autónomas y 1,5 países. La implementación de la red ZPAEN supuso una reducción potencial de alrededor del 56% de las emisiones de GEI en comparación con el escenario anterior. Por lo tanto, la implementación de las ZPAEN significó una mejora potencial importante en comparación con el escenario anterior. Sin embargo, la nueva regulación podría mejorarse si se considera todo el área de distribución de especies carroñeras adicionales y una coordinación y gestión a escalas suprarregional y supranacional. En el Capítulo 4, se evaluaron las percepciones de los ganaderos sobre los servicios ecosistémicos proporcionados por los carroñeros vertebrados en España. Para ello, se realizaron 276 encuestas cara a cara con ganaderos en 7 grandes sistemas ganaderos en extensivo. Los resultados indicaron que el servicio de consumo de carroña fue percibido por los ganaderos como el servicio más importante proporcionado por los carroñeros. Curiosamente, se detectó una paradoja del "Dr. Jekyll y Mr. Hyde", ya que las mismas especies y especies dentro del mismo gremio pueden ser percibidas doblemente como beneficiosas o dañinas dependiendo de si son consideradas principalmente como carroñeros o depredadores, respectivamente. Los buitres fueron percibidos por los ganaderos como el grupo taxonómico más beneficioso, seguidos de otras rapaces, aves no rapaces y mamíferos. Los ganaderos percibieron la importancia de los carroñeros como proveedores de servicios ecosistémicos cuando las especies tenían una distribución más restringida y su población se percibía como decreciente. Por el contrario, los ganaderos percibieron que la provisión del servicio de consumo de carroña aumentó con distribuciones más amplias de los carroñeros. Además, en las comunidades de carroñeros con mayor diversidad funcional, los ganaderos percibieron una mayor capacidad del gremio de carroñeros para proporcionar servicios ecosistémicos. Los ganaderos que realizan prácticas ganaderas tradicionales, como la trashumancia y el abandono de los cadáveres de ganado en el campo, tienen un mayor conocimiento de los carroñeros y una percepción positiva de ellos. Por el contrario, los ganaderos que tienen un mayor número de cabezas de ganado, que habían sufrido algún ataque al ganado por parte de carroñeros y que hayan tenido contratado un seguro de retirada de cadáveres en el pasado, mostraron percepciones más negativas de los carroñeros. En general, los resultados de este capítulo apoyan la implementación de políticas de conservación en Europa que favorezcan los sistemas ganaderos tradicionales en extensivo y fortalezcan el vínculo entre los ganaderos y los carroñeros. En el Capítulo 5, se examinaron las similitudes y contradicciones entre el CIL de los pastores y el CC respecto al servicio de consumo de carroña proporcionado por los carroñeros vertebrados en España. Para ello, se realizaron 73 encuestas cara a cara con los pastores de dos sistemas ganaderos en extensivo. Además, se llevó a cabo el monitoreo del consumo de 45 cadáveres de ganado por los carroñeros con cámaras trampa. El nivel de consistencia entre los dos sistemas de conocimiento se evaluó para tres categorías de edad y experiencia de los pastores y en diferentes niveles de organización ecológica (i.e., especies y comunidad). En general, se encontró una alta consistencia entre el CIL y el CC, particularmente a nivel de especie, que también fue consistente en el rango de edades y experiencia de los pastores evaluado. A nivel de especie, las frecuencias de aparición de los carroñeros en los cadáveres observadas por los pastores y calculadas a partir de las cámaras trampa estaban altamente correlacionadas en ambas áreas de estudio. Del mismo modo, la consideración de los pastores de cada especie como proveedoras del servicio de consumo de carroña y la biomasa de carroña consumida por cada especie calculada usando cámaras trampa también estaban muy relacionadas en ambas áreas de estudio. A nivel de comunidad, no se encontraron diferencias entre el CIL y el CC con respecto al tiempo medio de detección de los cadáveres por los carroñeros, mientras que hubo diferencias en el tiempo medio de consumo de los cadáveres, siendo más bajo para el CIL que el calculado con cámaras trampa. En general, estos resultados apoyan la integración del CIL y el CC en las estrategias de gestión de los carroñeros vertebrados. Finalmente, el Capítulo 6 discute los principales resultados obtenidos en los capítulos anteriores, incluidas las implicaciones de conservación y políticas, las limitaciones y advertencias, y las perspectivas futuras. En general, al abordar algunas lagunas importantes con respecto a la carroña y los servicios ecosistémicos asociados al consumo de carroña, así como las percepciones sociales y el CIL sobre los carroñeros vertebrados en España desde una perspectiva socio-ecológica, esta tesis enfatiza la necesidad de i) vincular políticas sanitarias y ambientales, ii) apoyar la implementación de políticas que favorezcan los sistemas ganaderos tradicionales en extensivo, e iii) integrar el CIL y el CC en las estrategias de conservación de los carroñeros vertebrados.

El objetivo inicial del presente estudio, es delimitar como ámbito de trabajo la cuenca hidrológica del paraje Rambla Madre mediante líneas divisorias de aguas. A continuación pretendemos realizar un breve análisis histórico desde el siglo XVIII hasta la actualidad. Además nos planteamos realizar un análisis del medio biofísico que incluya los siguientes elementos: clima, geología, edafología, hidrología superficial y subterránea, erosión hídrica, vegetación, fauna y ganadería, poniendo especial énfasis en la hidrología superficial. Se estudió la composición de la dieta de siete territorios de lechuza común (Tyto alba) en el Sur de Alicante (España) entre los años 2012 y 2014. El estudio se basó en el análisis de egagrópilas recogidas en invierno y primavera. Los mamíferos fueron el grupo presa más frecuentemente consumido en invierno, seguido por las aves, mientras que en primavera ocurrió lo contrario. En términos de biomasa consumida, los mamíferos fueron las presas más importantes en ambas estaciones, especialmente en invierno. Se observaron diferencias entre territorios, de modo que los más norteños incluyeron más aves. La diversidad trófica total fue muy similar entre estaciones. Se observa que la dieta en el sureste de la Península Ibérica difiere de otras poblaciones europeas y otras áreas geográficas, donde predominan claramente los micromamíferos. Este patrón podría explicarse por la menor densidad de micromamíferos conforme el paisaje es más árido.

Máster en Investigación Básica y Aplicada en Recursos Cinegéticos., Los estudios en ecología basados en largas series temporales son de gran utilidad por la información que proporcionan, sobre todo en especies como el conejo (Oryctolagus cuniculus) y la perdiz roja (Alectoris rufa), especies que en las últimas décadas presentan un declive poblacional. A partir de las bolsas de caza registradas en un coto de Alicante durante los últimos 20 años, exploramos los modelos que mejor explican las variaciones interanuales en las bolsas de caza en las modalidades de reclamo, descaste y periodo hábil de caza general mediante GzLM, utilizando variables explicativas asociadas al esfuerzo de caza, climáticas e índices de abundancia. Según los modelos resultantes, la perdiz capturada en el reclamo está positivamente asociada al número de jornadas, al número de cazadores por jornada, a las capturas por cazador durante la primera jornada y a la precipitación otoñal; la perdiz capturada durante el periodo general de caza aumenta con el número de jornadas, las capturas medias por cazador la primera jornada y la precipitación primaveral; el número de conejos cazados en descaste es función del número de cazadores por jornada, el número de jornadas, y la interacción positiva entre estas dos variables, aumenta con las capturas medias por cazador la primera jornada, la precipitación primaveral y las capturas registradas en el otoño anterior, pero es menor cuanto mayor es las bolsa del descaste anterior; y el número de conejos capturados en el periodo general de caza está relacionado positivamente con las capturas medias por cazador la primera jornada, las capturas en descaste, el número de cazadores por jornada y el número de jornadas, siendo la interacción entre estas dos últimas negativa; así mismo, la precipitación otoñal y el conejo abatido el año anterior están negativamente asociados con los conejos capturados en este periodo. Discutimos que, para una correcta gestión cinegética, debe regularse el esfuerzo de caza en función de la abundancia (para lo que deberían realizarse estimas fiables), regular el esfuerzo considerando simultáneamente el número de jornadas, de cazadores por día y los cupos, y considerarse las capturas anteriores, al menos en el caso del conejo, para lo que es necesario tener buenos registros de la actividad cinegética.
