The release of arsenic (As) adsorbed onto iron oxide (Fe-oxide) surfaces is affected by dissolved organic matter (DOM), phosphate (hereafter referred to as PO4), and silicic acid (H4SiO4). Further, the reductive dissolution of As from Fe-oxide phases is also affected in reduced soils and sediments. Thus, the aim of this study was to understand the adsorption competition and redox-related mechanisms by which DOM affects As mobilization from Fe-oxide in a complex system containing both H4SiO4 and PO4. The results demonstrated that the DOM-driven, microbially mediated As biotransformation, and, thus, mobilization of As significantly increased when both dissolved inorganic H4SiO4 and PO4 were present, as the co-presence of H4SiO4 and PO4 decreased As adsorption sites on Fe-oxides. The availability of DOM in the co-presence of H4SiO4 and PO4 increased the microbial activity in the system by providing more substrates for microbial metabolism, which also decreased the redox potential (reducing conditions) and consumed acidity, causing the pH to increase from 4 to 6.8. In addition, DOM, H4SiO4, and PO4 competed with As for sorption sites on Fe-oxides. The effects of DOM on As mobility by DOM-mediated or -triggered redox reactions were apparently stronger in the co-presence of H4SiO4 and PO4 than DOM competition with arsenate for sorption sites on Fe-oxide alone. Cutaneous vascular tumors consist of a heterogeneous group of benign proliferations, including a range of hemangiomas and vascular malformations, as well as heterogeneous groups of both borderline and malignant neoplasms such as Kaposi’s sarcoma and angiosarcomas. The genetics of these tumors have been assessed independently in smaller individual cohorts making comparisons difficult. In our study, we analyzed a representative cohort of benign vascular proliferations observed in a clinical routine setting as well as a selection of malignant vascular proliferations. Our cohort of 104 vascular proliferations including hemangiomas, malformations, angiosarcomas and Kaposi’s sarcoma were screened by targeted next-generation sequencing for activating genetic mutations known or assumed to be potentially relevant in vascular proliferations. An association analysis was performed for mutation status and clinico-pathological parameters. Frequent activating hotspot mutations in GNA genes, including GNA14 Q205, GNA11 and GNAQ Q209 were identified in 16 of 64 benign vascular tumors (25%). GNA gene mutations were particularly frequent (52%) in cherry (senile) hemangiomas (13 of 25). In angiosarcomas, activating RAS mutations (HRAS and NRAS) were identified in three samples (16%). No activating GNA or RAS gene mutations were identified in Kaposi’s sarcomas. Our study identifies GNA14 Q205, GNA11 and GNAQ Q209 mutations as being the most common and mutually exclusive mutations in benign hemangiomas. These mutations were not identified in malignant vascular tumors, which could be of potential diagnostic value in distinguishing these entities. OA Förderung 2021

While Si influences nutrient stoichiometry and decomposition of graminoid litter, it is still unclear how Si influences anoxic litter decomposition and CH4 formation in graminoid dominated fen peatlands. First, Eriophorum vaginatum plants were grown under different Si and P availabilities, then shoots and roots were characterized regarding their proportions of C, Si, N and P and regarding C quality. Subsequently the Eriophorum shoots were subjected to anoxic decomposition. We hypothesized, that (I) litter grown under high Si availability would show a higher Si but lower nutrient mass fractions and a lower share of recalcitrant carbon moieties, (II) high-Si litter would show higher CH4 and CO2 production rates during anoxic decomposition, (III) methanogenesis would occur earlier in less recalcitrant high-Si litter, compared to low-Si litter. We found a higher Si mass fraction that coincides with a general decrease in C and N mass fractions and decreased share of recalcitrant organic moieties. For high-Si litter, the CH4 production rate was higher, but there was no long-term influence on the CO2 production rate. More labile high-Si litter and a differential response in nutrient stoichiometry led to faster onset of methanogenesis. This may have important implications for our understanding of anaerobic carbon turnover in graminoid-rich fens.

Humans modify ecosystems and biodiversity worldwide, with negative consequences for ecosystem functioning. Promoting plant diversity is increasingly suggested as a mitigation strategy. However, our mechanistic understanding of how plant diversity affects the diversity of heterotrophic consumer communities remains limited. Here, we disentangle the relative importance of key components of plant diversity as drivers of herbivore, predator, and parasitoid species richness in experimental forests and grasslands. We find that plant species richness effects on consumer species richness are consistently positive and mediated by elevated structural and functional diversity of the plant communities. The importance of these diversity components differs across trophic levels and ecosystems, cautioning against ignoring the fundamental ecological complexity of biodiversity effects. Importantly, plant diversity effects on higher trophic-level species richness are in many cases mediated by modifications of consumer abundances. In light of recently reported drastic declines in insect abundances, our study identifies important pathways connecting plant diversity and consumer diversity across ecosystems., Here, Schuldt et al. collate data from two long-term grassland and forest biodiversity experiments to ask how plant diversity facets affect the diversity of higher trophic levels. The results show that positive effects of plant diversity on consumer diversity are mediated by plant structural and functional diversity, and vary across ecosystems and trophic levels.

Poster-Abstract

Two problems currently facing agriculture are drought and the availability of mineable phosphorus minerals used for fertilization. More frequent and longer drought periods are predicted to threaten agricultural yields in the future. The capacity of soils to hold water is a highly important factor controlling drought stress of plants during the growing phase. High phosphorus availability in soils is also necessary for high agricultural yields, however over application has also led to a range of environmental problems, foremost being the eutrophication of waterways. Amorphous silica (ASi) has been suggested as one solution to mitigate both water and phosphorus availability. In this work we analyzed the effect of ASi on phosphorus mobility and the soil water storage of a sandy soil. In a lysimeter experiment we found that ASi strongly increased the water storage capacity of soils (up to 180 % by addition of 3 wt. % ASi). Furthermore, the ASi is in direct competition with phosphorus for sorption sites on iron oxides and other soil minerals increasing nutrient mobilization and increasing potential bioavailability for plants. Following calibration to the lysimeter experiment a process based hydrological model was used to extrapolate experimental results to a sandy agricultural soil with and without ASi for one year. For the soil with ASi, the water storage capacities for the yearly scenario were up to 40 kg/m² higher compared to the untreated soil. Our results suggest that ASi enhances the water storage capacity and phosphorus mobility in soil and that this may be one way to mitigate the predicted climate change related drought stress in sandy soils.

More frequent and longer drought periods are predicted threatening agricultural yield. The capacity of soils to hold water is a highly important factor controlling drought stress intensity for plants. Biogenic amorphous silica (bASi) pools in soils are in the range of 0–6% and are suggested to help plants to resist drought. In agricultural soils, bASi pools declined to values of ~1% or lower) due to yearly crop harvest, decreasing water holding capacity of the soils. Here, we assessed the contribution of bASi to water holding capacity (WHC) of soil. Consequently, ASi was mixed at different rates (0, 1, 5 or 15%) with different soils. Afterwards, the retention curve of the soils was determined via Hyprop method. Here we show that bASi increases the soil water holding capacity substantially, by forming silica gels with a water content at saturation higher than 700%. An increase of bASi by 1% or 5% (weight) increased the water content at any water potential and plant available water increased by up to > 40% or > 60%, respectively. Our results suggest that soil management should be modified to increase bASi content, enhancing available water in soils and potentially decreasing drought stress for plants in terrestrial ecosystems.

To the Editor. Sweat duct proliferations and related cutaneous tumours pose a challenge for diagnosis and treatment due to the presence of multiple overlapping histopathological features (Schaller et al. 2010). In 1961 Nicolau and Balus described individuals with benign cutaneous lesions including atrophodermia vermiculata, multiple syringomata and milia which become known as Nicolau-Balus syndrome and was characterised by irregular distribution of elastin fibres (Nicolau and Balus 1961). A similar phenotype was later described as Rombo syndrome by Michaelsson et al (Michaelsson et al. 1981), with elastin distribution in these cases appearing like “swathes of steel wool” in some areas of the dermis (Van Steensel et al. 2001). In 2010, Schaller et al described several cases with the same abnormal elastin distribution, with the additional feature of sweat duct proliferations that appear morphologically similar to those found in microcystic adnexal carcinoma (MAC) patients, but (unlike MAC) were not invasive and did not require surgical resection (Schaller et al. 2010). In this study we describe five families with clinical and histopathological features that show similarities to Nicolau-Balus and Rombo syndromes with some cases also showing MAC-like ductal proliferations (figure S1). We provide evidence that these syndromes are caused by germline pathogenic variants in MYH9. Accordingly, we propose the term MALTA (MYH9 Associated eLasTin Aggregation) syndrome to reflect the common underlying genetic basis of this disease.

Peatlands perform important ecosystem functions, such as carbon storage and nutrient retention, which are affected, among other factors, by vegetation and peat decomposition. The availability of silicon (Si) in peatlands differs strongly, ranging from 25 mg L−1. Since decomposition of organic material was recently shown to be accelerated by Si, the aim of this study was to examine how Si influences decomposition of carbon and nutrient and toxicant mobilization in peatlands. We selected a fen site in Northern Bavaria with naturally bioavailable Si pore water concentrations of 5 mg/L and conducted a Si addition experiment. At a fourfold higher Si availability, dissolved organic carbon, carbon dioxide, and methane concentrations increased significantly. Furthermore, dissolved nitrogen, phosphorus, iron, manganese, cobalt, zinc, and arsenic concentrations were significantly higher under high Si availability. This enhanced mobilization may result from Si competing for binding sites but also from stronger reducing conditions, caused by accelerated respiration. The stronger reducing conditions also increased reduction of arsenate to arsenite and thus the mobility of this toxicant. Hence, higher Si availability is suggested to decrease carbon storage and increase nutrient and toxicant mobility in peatland ecosystems.

Silicon (Si) is known as beneficial element for graminaceous plants. The importance of Si for plant functioning of cereals was recently emphasized. However, about the effect of Si availability on biomass production, grain yield, nutrient status and nutrient use efficiency for wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), as one of the most important crop plants worldwide, less is known so far. Consequently, we assessed the effect of a broad range of supply levels of amorphous SiO2 on wheat plant performance. Our results revealed that Si is readily taken up and accumulated basically in aboveground vegetative organs. Carbon (C) and phosphorus (P) status of plants were altered in response to varying Si supply. In bulk straw biomass C concentration decreased with increasing Si supply, while P concentration increased from slight limitation towards optimal nutrition. Thereby, aboveground biomass production increased at low to medium supply levels of silica whereas grain yield increased at medium supply level only. Nutrient use efficiency was improved by Si insofar that biomass production was enhanced at constant nitrogen (N) status of substrate and plants. Consequently, our findings imply fundamental influences of Si on C turnover, P availability and nitrogen use efficiency for wheat as a major staple crop.

But for wheat uptake mechanisms are not entirely understood especially with regard to nutrient fertilization and different moisture regimes taking into account heavy rainfall events due to climate change. Here we show that especially higher P-fertilization under changing redox conditions may enhance arsenic uptake. This counteracts with higher N-fertilization reducing arsenic transfer and translocation into aboveground plant parts for both higher P-fertilization and reducing soil conditions. Arsenic speciation did not change in grain but for leaves P-fertilization together with reducing conditions increased the As(V) content compared to other arsenic species. Our results indicate important dependencies of nutrient fertilization, moisture conditions and substrate type on As accumulation of wheat as one of the most important crop plants worldwide with implications for agricultural practices.

Iron and manganese are relevant constituents of the earth's crust and both show increasing mobility when reduced by free electrons. This reduction is known to be controlled by microbial dissimilation processes. Alternative sources of free electrons in nature are cloud-to-ground lightning events with thermal and galvanic effects. Where thermal effects of lightning events are well described, less is known about the impact of galvanic lightning effects on metal mobilization. Here we show that a significant mobilization of manganese occurs due to galvanic effects of both positive and negative lightning, where iron seems to be unaffected with manganese being abundant in oxic forms in soils/sediments. A mean of 0.025 mmol manganese (negative lightning) or 0.08 mmol manganese (positive lightning) mobilization may occur. We suggest that lightning possibly influences biogeochemical cycles of redox sensitive elements in continental parts of the tropics/subtropics on a regional/local scale.

Phosphorus availability in soils is an important parameter influencing primary production in terrestrial ecosystems. Phosphorus limitation exists in many soils since a high proportion of soil phosphorus is stored in unavailable forms for plants, such as bound to iron minerals or stabilized organic matter. This is in spite of soils having a high amount of total soil phosphorus. The feasibility of silicon to mobilize phosphorus from strong binding sites of iron minerals has been shown for marine sediments but is less well studied in soils. Here we tested the effect of silicon on phosphorus mobilization for 143 Artic soils (representing contrasting soil characteristics), which have not been affected by agriculture or other anthropogenic management practices. In agreement with marine studies, silicon availabilities were significantly positive correlated to phosphorus mobilization in these soils. Laboratory experiments confirmed that silicon addition significantly increases phosphorus mobilization, by mobilizing Fe(II)-P phases from mineral surfaces. Silicon addition increased also soil respiration in phosphorus deficient soils. We conclude that silicon is a key component regulating mobilization of phosphorous in Arctic soils, suggesting that this may also be important for sustainable management of phosphorus availability in soils in general.

Background: Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is a rarely diagnosed ulcerative neutrophilic dermatosis with unknown origin that has been poorly characterized in clinical studies so far. Consequently there have been significant discussions about its associated factors and comorbidities. The aim of our multicenter study was to analyze current data from patients in dermatologic wound care centers in Germany in order to describe associated factors and comorbidities in patients with PG. Methods. Retrospective clinical investigation of patients with PG from dermatologic wound care centers in Germany. Results: We received data from 259 patients with PG from 20 different dermatologic wound care centers in Germany. Of these 142 (54.8%) patients were female, 117 (45.2%) were male; with an age range of 21 to 95 years, and a mean of 58 years. In our patient population we found 45.6% with anemia, 44.8% with endocrine diseases, 12.4% with internal malignancies, 9.3% with chronic inflammatory bowel diseases and 4.3% with elevated creatinine levels. Moreover 25.5% of all patients had a diabetes mellitus with some aspects of potential association with the metabolic syndrome. Conclusions: Our study describes one of the world's largest populations with PG. Beside the well-known association with chronic bowel diseases and neoplasms, a potentially relevant new aspect is an association with endocrine diseases, in particular the metabolic syndrome, thyroid dysfunctions and renal disorders. Our findings represent clinically relevant new aspects. This thesis and the related implementation work focus on the integration efforts of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Grid computing (a form of distributed computing for faster and more reliable processing) for a disaster management system. Basic formulation of the hypothesis proposed that Grid computing can bring tremendous productivity and efficiency to GIS projects facing the challenges of an on demand world. The EU funded project SCIER (Sensor & Computing Infrastructure for Environmental Risks) was designed on the base of this cognition. In this project several data sources are used to identify their applicability for natural hazards namely floods and forest fires in Europe. This dissertation is integrated into this project and composed at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geodesy, GIS Group in Technische Universität München. Based on this approach the final implementation was built in a form of Web-GIS in a user friendly environment. Diese Dissertation und die damit verbundenen Untersuchungen konzentrieren sich auf den Bereich der Integration von Geoinformationssystemen (GIS) und Grid Computing (eine Art Netz basierte Verarbeitung zur schnelleren und zuverlässigeren Durchführung) für ein Katastrophenmanagement-system. Das Wissenschaftliche Ziel der Arbeit ist der Nachweis, dass Grid Computing in GIS-Projekten enorme Produktivitäts- und Effizienzsteigerungen bringen kann. Das von der EU finanzierte Projekt SCIER (Sensor & Computing Infrastructure for Environmental Risks) bildete die Basis für die Arbeit. In diesem Projekt werden mehrere Datenquellen verwendet, mit deren Hilfe Naturgefahren wie Überschwemmungen und Waldbrände in Europa zu identifiziert werden können. Auf diesem Konzept basierend, wurde eine Erweiterung in Form einen WebGIS für eine benutzerfreundliche Umgebung realisiert. Diese Dissertation wurde an der Fakultät für Bauingenieur- und Vermessungswesen, am Fachgebiet Geoinformationssysteme der Technische Universität München erstellt.
