The crystal structures of two phospho­rus oxonitride polymorphs (cristobalite- and coesite-type) were redetermined by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction data., Hitherto, phospho­rus oxonitride (PON) could not be obtained in the form of single crystals and only powder diffraction experiments were feasible for structure studies. In the present work we have synthesized two polymorphs of phospho­rus oxonitride, cristobalite-type (cri-PON) and coesite-type (coe-PON), in the form of single crystals and reinvestigated their crystal structures by means of in house and synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal structures of cri-PON and coe-PON are built from PO2N2 tetra­hedral units, each with a statistical distribution of oxygen and nitro­gen atoms. The crystal structure of the coe-PON phase has the space group C2/c with seven atomic sites in the asymmetric unit [two P and three (N,O) sites on general positions, one (N,O) site on an inversion centre and one (N,O) site on a twofold rotation axis], while the cri-PON phase possesses tetra­gonal I-42d symmetry with two independent atoms in the asymmetric unit [the P atom on a fourfold inversion axis and the (N,O) site on a twofold rotation axis]. In comparison with previous structure determinations from powder data, all atoms were refined with anisotropic displacement parameters, leading to higher precision in terms of bond lengths and angles.

Color point tuning is an important challenge for improving white light LEDs. In this paper, the possibilities of color tuning with the efficient LED phosphor Sr1−x−y−zCaxBaySi2O2N2:Euz2+ (0 ≤ x, y ≤ 1; 0.005 ≤ z ≤ 0.16) are investigated. The emission color can be tuned in two ways: by changing Eu2+ concentration and by substitution of the host lattice cation Sr2+ by either Ca2+ or Ba2+. The variation in the Eu2+ concentration shows a red shift of the emission upon increasing the Eu concentration above 2%. The red shift is explained by energy migration and energy transfer to Eu2+ ions emitting at longer wavelengths. Along with this (desired) red shift there is an (undesired) lowering of the quantum efficiency and the thermal quenching temperature due to concentration quenching. Partial substitution of Sr2+ by either Ca2+ or Ba2+ also results in a red-shifted Eu2+ emission. For Ca2+ this is expected and the red shift is explained by an increased crystal field splitting for Eu2+ on the (smaller) Ca2+ cation site. For Ba2+, the red shift is surprising. Often, a blue shift of the fd emission is observed in case of substitution of Sr2+ by the larger Ba2+ cation. The Eu2+ emission in the pure BaSi2O2N2 host lattice is indeed blue-shifted. Temperature dependent luminescence measurements show that the quenching temperature drops upon substitution of Sr by Ca, whereas for Ba substitution, the quenching temperature remains high. Color tuning by partial substitution of Sr2+ by Ba2+ is therefore the most promising way to shift the color point of LEDs while retaining the high quantum yield and high luminescence quenching temperature.

The structural compression mechanism of Ce4[Si4O(3 + x)N(7 - x)]Cl(1 - x)O(x), x approximately = 0.2, was investigated by in situ single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction at pressures of 3.0, 8.5 and 8.6 GPa using the diamond-anvil cell technique. On increasing pressure the low-pressure cubic structure first undergoes only minor structural changes. Between 8.5 and 8.6 GPa a first-order phase transition occurs, accompanied by a change of the single-crystal colour from light orange to dark red. The main structural mechanisms, leading to a volume reduction of about 5% at the phase transition, are an increase in and a rearrangement of the Ce coordination, the loss of the Ce2, Ce3 split position, and a bending of some of the inter-polyhedral Si-N-Si angles in the arrangement of the corner-sharing Si tetrahedra. The latter is responsible for the short c axis of the orthorhombic high-pressure structure compared with the cell parameter of the cubic low-pressure structure.
