Abstract

This contribution deals with H-modes with significant heat exchange between electrons and ions, but which can still show large differences between electron and ion-temperatures especially inside half minor radius. These conditions are referred to as moderately collisional. A systematic study shows that an increasing fraction of electron heating increases the transport in the ion channel mainly due to the dependence of the ITG dominated ion transport on the ratio Te/Ti in agreement with modeling. The rotational shear in the plasmas under study was so small that it hardly influences ITG stability, such that variations of the rotation profile due to a change of the heating method were of minor importance. These findings connect to studies of advanced tokamak scenarios using ECCD as a tool to modify the q-profile. The electron heating connected to the ECCD tends to increase the transport in the ion channel quite in contrast to the goal to operate at reduced current but with increased confinement. The confinement only increases as the fraction of ion heating is increased by adding more NBI. An ITER case was modeled as well. Due to the larger value of νei ・ τE the ratio Te/Ti is only moderately reduced even with strong electron heating and the confinement reduction is small even for the hypothetic case of using only ECRH as additional heating. Finally the paper discusses the ongoing upgrade of the AUG ECRH-system.

Abstract

High-power resonant diplexers for millimetre waves have various promising applications in ECRH systems. The round-trip resonator length of a diplexer needs to be accurately tuned to match its prescribed functionality. For this purpose one of the mirrors in the FADIS MkIIa diplexer has been mounted on a motion system, in order to control the mirror to its desired location despite the presence of substantial disturbances. The mechanical properties and control strategy for the mirror motion system have been designed such as to meet the overall system requirements. The performance of the motion system has been experimentally validated in various high power mm-wave tests. © Owned by the authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2012.

The system is based on a combination of a polarization independent, non-resonant, Mach-Zehnder diplexer equipped with dielectric plate beam splitters [2, 3] employed as corrugated oversized waveguide filter, and a resonant Fast Directional Switch, FADIS [4, 5, 6, 7] as ECE/ECCD separation system. This paper presents an overview of the system, the low power characterisation tests and first high power commissioning on AUG.

Abstract

Characteristics of ring resonator diplexers for high-power ECRH are briefly reviewed. Commissioning experiments performed on ASDEX Upgrade with the diplexer Mk IIa are presented, which demonstrate slow and fast switching of the power between two launchers, and thus the capability for efficient suppression of neoclassical tearing modes and simultaneous central heating of the plasma. The development of the compact diplexer Mk IIIb is discussed, and test results are presented. Abstract

The global land area required to meet the German consumption of agricultural products for food and non-food use was quantified, and the related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly those induced by land-use changes in tropical countries, were estimated. Two comprehensive business-asusual scenarios describe the development corridor of biomass for non-food use in terms of energetic and non-energetic purposes. In terms of land use, Germany was already a net importer of agricultural land in 2004, and the net additional land required by 2030 is estimated to comprise 2.5-3.4 Mha. This is mainly due to biofuel demand driven by current policy targets. Meeting the required biodiesel import demand would result in an additional GWP of 23-37 Tg of CO2 equivalents through direct and indirect land-use changes. Alternative scenario elements outline the potential options for reducing Germany's land requirement, which reflect future global per capita availability.

Abstract

Two-phase flow experiments at vertical pipes are much suitable for studying the action of different constitutive relations characterizing the momentum exchange at the gas/liquid interface as well as the dynamic behaviour of the gas/liquid interface itself. The flow can be observed in its movement along the pipe and, in particular, within the shear field close to the pipe wall over a considerable vertical distance and, consequently, over a comparatively long time without the immediate separation of gas and liquid characteristic for horizontal flows. Wire-mesh sensors, which were the working horse in the described experiments, supplied sequences of instantaneous two-dimensional gas fraction distributions with a high-resolution in space and time. This allows to derive from the data not only void fraction and bubble velocity profiles, but also bubble size distributions, bubble-size resolved radial gas fraction profiles as well as the axial evolution of these distributions. An interfacial surface reconstruction algorithm was developed in order to extract the extension of interfacial area from the wire-mesh sensor data. The sensors were upgraded to withstand parameters that are close to nuclear reactor conditions. Most of the experiments were performed for both air/water flow at ambient pressure and steam/water flow of up to 6.5 MPa at identical combinations of the gas and liquid superficial velocities. This offers excellent conditions for studying the influence of the fluid properties.

But the number of strokes of those devices is limited up to 50 per minute. They are to slowly to be used in state of the art. High speed presses are working with more than 300 strokes per minute. A sensor controlled overload safety device for application in high speed presses was developed at the Fraunhofer-IUW in Chemnitz/Germany.

Abstract

ASDEX Upgrade has been operated with tungsten-coated plasma-facing components for several years. H-mode operation with good confinement has been demonstrated. Nevertheless, purely neutral beam injection-heated H-modes with reduced gas puff, moderate heating power or/and increased triangularity tend to accumulate tungsten, followed by a radiative collapse. Under these conditions, central electron heating with electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH), usually in X2 polarization, changes the impurity transport in the plasma centre, reducing the central tungsten concentration and, in many cases, stabilizing the plasma. In order to extend the applicability of central ECRH to a wider range of magnetic field and plasma current additional ECRH schemes with reduced single-pass absorption have been implemented: X3 heating allows us to reduce the magnetic field by 30%, such that the first H-modes with an ITER-like value of the safety factor of q 95 = 3 could be run in the tungsten-coated device. O2 heating increases the cutoff density by a factor of 2 allowing higher currents and triangularities to be addressed. For both schemes, scenarios have been developed to cope with the associated reduced absorption. In the case of central X3 heating, the X2 resonance lies close to the pedestal top at the high-field side of the plasma, serving as a beam dump. For O2, holographic mirrors have been developed which guarantee a second pass through the plasma centre. The beam position on these reflectors is controlled by fast thermocouples. Stray-radiation protection has been implemented using sniffer probes.

Abstract

Properties of plasma sprayed oxides on metallic substrates: Metallic substrates were coated with Cr$_{2}$O$_{3}$, Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$, ZrO$_{2^-}$7%Y$_{2}$O'$_{3}$ by plasma spray technique. An aim of this work was the investigation of the bonding mechanism between substrate and coating . From the results achieved by several analyzing methods (SEM, SLAMS) it was concluded that mechanical bonding of the spray particles on rough metallic substrate surfaces was the dominant adhesion mechanism. In a second step the influence of substrate material and -temperature on residual stress condition in chromia coatings was investigated. As analyzing method X-ray diffraction was applied. Further the phase composition of oxides was determined in dependance of the different process variants applied APS ( = atmospheric plasma spraying), VPS (= vacuum plasma spraying) and IPS ( = inert gas plasma spraying). Post heat treatment of coated samples influenced the phase composition and produced chemical reactions at the coating/substrate interface.

Abstract

A comparative study, on 251 patients, between CT, Octoson and conventional ultrasound, established that CT (with angio-CT) had the highest rate of sensitivity (95.86%). The Octoson examination had a higher sensitivity (92.58%) than the conventional ultrasonic examination (82.64%). This result is achieved because superficial and subdiaphragmatic metastases, which lie in the depth of the liver, are better presented by the Octoson than with a mechanical sector scanner. Superficial metastases need to be presented with a water-path transducer for superficial lesions and subdiaphragmatic metastases with a wide range focus transducer. These areas can also be accurately shown on scanners with a dynamic transducer. The specificity of these three methods lies between 90 and 96%.

39. Diskrepante Befunde zwischen EMIT-st (Benzodiazepine) und DC-Screening

Abstract

Mit dem EMIT-st-System (“Enzyme-multiplied immunoassay technique single test”; vgl. Firmenschrift Syva-Merck 1984) steht ein auserordentlich weit verbreitetes Screeningverfahren zur Verfugung, das hinsichtlich der Analysendauer dem dunnschichtchromatographischen Suchtest (DFG 1986; Schutz 1982 a, b) uberlegen ist (Zeitbedarf fur EMIT-st wenige Minuten, fur die DC-Methode einschlieslich Hydrolyse und Extraktion 1,5–2,5 h). Diese gute Praktikabilitat mag auch ein Grund dafur sein, das der EMIT-st bei vergleichsweise hohen Kosten so haufig eingesetzt wird, obwohl er hinsichtlich der Nachweisempfindlichkeit, Selektivitat und Spezifitat der DC-Methode (Kupplung mit Bratton-Marshall-Reagens zu Azofarbstoffen nach Hydrolyse, photolytischer Desalkylierung und Diazotierung) in vielen Fallen unterlegen ist (z. B. Nachweisgrenze 0,5 mg Oxazepam/1 bei EMIT-st gegenuber 0,05 mg Oxazepam/1 beim DC-Screening sowie keine Differenzierung zwischen verschiedenen Benzodiazepinen beim EMIT-st). Nach allgemeiner Auffassung sollten beim Benzodiazepinscreening beide Verfahren eingesetzt werden, um die Forderung nach einer “confirming method” zu erfullen. Dabei ergibt sich nach den Beobachtungen von Oellerich (1979) und auch aufgrund eigener Studien eine relativ hohe Effizienz von etwa 85%. Bereits Oellerich berichtet in diesem Zusammenhang uber „falsch-negative“ Resultate und vermutet einen storenden Einflus der Konjugatbildung. Vor einem unkritischen Einsatz von Immunotests warnte kurzlich Baumler (1985). Aufgrund seiner Erkenntnisse werden die Benzodiazepinderivate Flunitrazepam (Rohypnol) und Bromazepam (Lexotanil, Durazanil, Normoc u. a.) nicht erfast. Von einer Anwendung des EMIT-st bei klinisch-toxikologischen Eilanalysen sei daher sogar abzuraten, da eine Benzodiazepinvergiftung vorliegen konne, obwohl der Immunotest die Anwesenheit von Benzodiazepinen verneine (Baumler 1985).

While most strains of heterofermentative lactobacilli and strains of Leuconostoc species contained only traces of a dehydratase reacting with glycerol or propanediol-1,2, three strains of Lactobacillus brevis and one strain of L.buchneri that metabolized glycerol readily in the presence of glucose, contained propanediol-1,2 dehydratase (EC 4.2.1.28). This cobamide requiring enzyme from L.brevis B 18 was partially purified. It reacts with the substrates propanediol-1,2, glycerol and ethanediol-1,2 with the relative activities of about 3:2:1. This ratio remained unchanged throughout the purification procedure. The substrate affinities were measured: propanediol-1,2 K sub m = 0.6 mM, glycerol K sub m = 4 mM, ethanediol-1,2 K sub m = 5.3 mM coenzyme B12 (substrate glycerol) K sub m = 0.007 mM. The activity of the dehydratase was promoted by potassium or ammonium ions and inhibited by sodium, lithium, magnesium or specially manganese. The apparent molecular weight of propanediol-1, dehydrat ase was determined as M sub r = 180,000. (IFU)

Abstract

The effect of temperature on CH4 production, turnover of dissolved H2, and enrichment of H2-utilizing anaerobic bacteria was studied in anoxic paddy soil and sediment of Lake Constance. When anoxic paddy soil was incubated under an atmosphere of H2/CO2, rates of CH4 production increased with time at temperatures higher than 25 degree C, but decreased at temperatures lower than 20 degree C. Chloroform completely inhibited methanogenesis in anoxic paddy soil and lake sediment, but did not or only partially inhibit the turnover of dissolved H2, especially at low incubation temperatures. Cultures with H2 as energy source resulted in the enrichment of chemolithotrophic homoacetogenic bacterial whenever incubation temperatures were lower than 20 degree C. Hydrogenotrophic methanogens could only be enriched at 30 degree C from anoxic paddy soil. A homoacetogen (strain HP4) and a methanogen (strain Bab1) were isolated from enrichtment cultures with lake sediment at 4 degree C and with anoxic p addy soil at 30 degree C, respectively. The two strains greatly differed in cardinal temperatures of growth. Whereas the methanogen was mesophilic, the homoacetogen was psychrotrophic. This adaptation possibly allows homoacetogenic bacteria to contribute to the turnover of dissolved H2 at low in situ temperatures of anoxic soils and lake sediments.

42. Glycerol production of various strains of saccharomyces

Abstract

The quantity of glycerol as principally by-product of the alcoholic fermentation depends to a large extent on the yeast strain. Different strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae were found to form amounts of glycerol varying between 4.2 to 10.4 g/L. The formation of glycerol is regarded as a result of the competition between alcohol dehydrogenase and glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase that compete for the reduced coenzyme NADH2. High and low glycerol forming yeast strains showed large differences in the activity of glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase and only small variations in the activity of alcohol dehydrogenase. The total amount of glycerol formed was also influenced by amino acids. In thiamine deficient media a decrease in glycerol formation was observed. Experiments indicate a correlation between the formation of acetaldehyde and glycerol and the production of cell mass that may be of practical interest. (IFU)

Abstract

The effects of chewing gum, containing 0 and 4 mg nicotine, on F waves were studied in healthy volunteers in a repeated measure design. F responses were recorded from the abductor pollicis brevis muscle following stimulation of the median nerve at the wrist. The persistence and various amplitude measures were analysed. Chewing a 4 mg nicotine gum, with a considerable rise in systemic nicotine (6.4-37.4 ng/ml), failed to produce significant effects on F wave parameters in relation to the placebo baseline. The analysis of different F wave amplitude ranges, however, revealed significant nicotine-induced changes: a dose-related decrease of F responsesor = 500 microV and an increase of F waves between 200-290 microV. This may be due to an activation of Renshaw cells in the spinal cord.

Abstract

The OPERA neutrino detector in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory (LNGS) was designed to perform the first detection of neutrino oscillations in appearance mode through the study of νμ→ ντ oscillations. The apparatus consists of an emulsion/lead target complemented by electronic detectors and it is placed in the high energy long-baseline CERN to LNGS beam (CNGS) 730 km away from the neutrino source. Runs with CNGS neutrinos were successfully carried out in 2007 and 2008 with the detector fully operational with its related facilities for the emulsion handling and analysis. Abstract

The OPERA neutrino oscillation experiment has been designed to prove the appearance of ντ in a nearly pure νμ beam (CNGS) produced at CERN and detected in the underground Hall C of the Gran Sasso Laboratory, 730 km away from the source. In OPERA, τ leptons resulting from the interaction of ντ are produced in target units called bricks made of nuclear emulsion films interleaved with lead plates. The OPERA target contains 150000 of such bricks, for a total mass of 1.25 kton, arranged into walls interleaved with plastic scintillator strips. The detector is split into two identical supermodules, each supermodule containing a target section followed by a magnetic spectrometer for momentum and charge measurement of penetrating particles. Real time information from the scintillators and the spectrometers provide the identification of the bricks where the neutrino interactions occurred. The candidate bricks are extracted from the walls and, after X-ray marking and an exposure to cosmic rays for alignment, their emulsion films are developed and sent to the emulsion scanning laboratories to perform the accurate scan of the event. In this paper, we review the design and construction of the detector and of its related infrastructures, and report on some technical performances of the various components. The construction of the detector started in 2003 and it was completed in Summer 2008. The experiment is presently in the data taking phase. Abstract

The OPERA neutrino detector at the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory (LNGS) was designed to perform the first detection of neutrino oscillations in appearance mode, through the study of nu_mu to nu_tau oscillations. The apparatus consists of a lead/emulsion-film target complemented by electronic detectors. It is placed in the high-energy, long-baseline CERN to LNGS beam (CNGS) 730 km away from the neutrino source. In August 2006 a first run with CNGS neutrinos was successfully conducted. A first sample of neutrino events was collected, statistically consistent with the integrated beam intensity. After a brief description of the beam and of the various sub-detectors, we report on the achievement of this milestone, presenting the first data and some analysis results., Submitted to the New Journal of Physics
