1. Can AMS reveal deformation history of serpentinized orogenite peridotite?

Abstract: The orogenic peridotite body Mohelno represents an ultramafic igneous rock of asthenospheric origin located in the Moldanubian Zone (the eastern margin of the Bohemian Massif, Czech Republic), which is interpreted as a deep part of the thickened orogenic root developed during Variscan continental convergence. The Mohelno body represents a large scale fold structure that underwent a complex tectonic and metamorphic history. It records deformation in mantle, emplacement into lower orogenic crust and exhumation within granulite complex to middle crustal levels. The oldest part of the evolution is partially recorded by the crystallographic preferred orientation of olivine and orthopyroxene preserved in coarse-grained relics of the Mohelno peridotite. This original structure is reworked by pervasive deformation resulting in ultramylonitic fabric. Later in the middle crustal conditions, the peridotite is affected by the serpentinization to various degree, thus original anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) record is disturbed and difficult to interpret. Modeling of AMS using the topotactic relationships between olivine and orthopyroxene and newly growing serpentine minerals + magnetite helped us to understand the AMS evolution during the serpentinization process. This enables us to relate distinct AMS fabrics to original mantle structure of olivine and pyroxenes and to late deformation evolution of already serpentinized peridotite., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

Abstract: BACKGROUND & AIMS: Patients with Lynch syndrome are at high risk for developing colorectal cancer (CRC). Regular colonoscopic surveillance is recommended, but there is no international consensus on the appropriate interval. We investigated whether shorter intervals are associated with lower CRC incidence and detection at earlier stages by comparing the surveillance policies in Germany, which evaluates patients by colonoscopy annually, in the Netherlands (patients evaluated at 1-2-year intervals), and Finland (patients evaluated at 2-3-year intervals). METHODS: We collected data from 16,327 colonoscopic examinations (conducted from 1984 through 2015) of 2747 patients with Lynch syndrome (pathogenic variants in the MLH1, MSH2, or MSH6 genes) from the German HNPCC Consortium, the Dutch Lynch Syndrome Registry, and the Finnish Lynch Syndrome Registry. Our analysis included 23,309 person-years of cumulative observation time. Time from the index colonoscopy to incident CRC or adenoma was analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method; groups were compared using the log-rank test. We performed multivariable Cox regression analyses to identify factors associated with CRC risk (diagnosis of CRC before the index colonoscopy, sex, mutation, age, and presence of adenoma at the index colonoscopy). RESULTS: The 10-year cumulative CRC incidence ranged from 4.1% to 18.4% in patients with low-and high-risk profiles, respectively, and varied with age, sex, mutation, and prior detection of CRC or adenoma. Observed colonoscopy intervals were largely in accordance with the country-specific recommendations. We found no significant differences in cumulative CRC incidence or CRC stage at detection among countries. There was no significant association between CRC stage and[GRAPHICS]time since last colonoscopy. CONCLUSIONS: We did not find a significant reduction in CRC incidence or stage of detection in Germany (annual colonoscopic surveillance) than in countries with longer surveillance intervals (the Netherlands, with 1-2-year intervals, and Finland, with 2-3-year intervals). Overall, we did not find a significant association of the interval with CRC risk, although age, sex, mutation, and prior neoplasia were used to individually modify colonoscopy intervals. Studies are needed to develop and validate risk-adapted surveillance strategies and to identify patients who benefit from shorter surveillance intervals.

Abstract: International audience; Garnet (10 vol.%; pyrope contents 3444 mol.%) hosted in quartzofeldspathic rocks within a large vertical shear zone of south Madagascar shows a strong grain-size reduction (from a few cm to similar to 300 mu m). Electron back-scattered diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscope imaging coupled with quantitative analysis of digitized images (PolyLX software) have been used in order to understand the deformation mechanisms associated with this grain-size evolution. The garnet grain-size reduction trend has been summarized in a typological evolution (from Type I to Type IV). Type I, the original porphyroblasts, form cm-sized elongated grains that crystallized upon multiple nucleation and coalescence following biotite breakdown: biotite + sillimanite + quartz = garnet + alkali feldspar + rutile + melt. These large garnet grains contain quartz ribbons and sillimanite inclusions. Type I garnet is sheared along preferential planes (sillimanite layers, quartz ribbons and/or suitably oriented garnet crystallographic planes) producing highly elongated Type II garnet grains marked by a single crystallographic orientation. Further deformation leads to the development of a crystallographic misorientation, subgrains and new grains resulting in Type III garnet. Associated grain-size reduction occurs via subgrain rotation recrystallization accompanied by fast diffusion-assisted dislocation glide. This plastic deformation of garnet is associated with efficient recovery as shown by the very low dislocation densities (1010 m-3 or lower). The rounded Type III garnet experiences rigid body rotation in fine-grained matrix. In the highly deformed samples, the deformation mechanisms in garnet are grain-size- and shape-dependent: dislocation creep is dominant for the few large grains left (>1 mm; Type II garnet), rigid body rotation is typical for the smaller rounded grains (300 mu m or less; Type III garnet) whereas diffusion creep may affect more elliptic garnet (Type IV garnet). The PT conditions of garnet plasticity in the continental crust (=950 degrees C; 11 kbar) have been identified using two-feldspar thermometry and GASP conventional barometry. The garnet microstructural and deformation mechanisms evolution, coupled with grain-size decrease in a fine-grained steady-state microstructure of quartz, alkali feldspar and plagioclase, suggests a separate mechanical evolution of garnet with respect to felsic minerals within the shear zone.

Abstract: 27 p.; International audience; [1] The contribution of lateral forces, vertical load, gravity redistribution and erosion to the origin of mantled gneiss domes in internal zones of orogens remains debated. In the Orlica-Snieznik dome (Moldanubian zone, European Variscan belt), the polyphase tectono-metamorphic history is initially characterized by the development of subhorizontal fabrics associated with medium- to high-grade metamorphic conditions in different levels of the crust. It reflects the eastward influx of a Saxothuringian-type passive margin sequence below a Teplá-Barrandian upper plate. The ongoing influx of continental crust creates a thick felsic orogenic root with HP rocks and migmatitic orthogneiss. The orogenic wedge is subsequently indented by the eastern Brunia microcontinent producing a multiscale folding of the orogenic infrastructure. The resulting kilometre-scale folding is associated with the variable burial of the middle crust in synforms and the exhumation of the lower crust in antiforms. These localized vertical exchanges of material and heat are coeval with a larger crustal-scale folding of the whole infrastructure generating a general uplift of the dome. It is exemplified by increasing metamorphic conditions and younging of 40Ar/39Ar cooling ages toward the extruded migmatitic subdomes cored by HP rocks. The vertical growth of the dome induces exhumation by pure shear-dominated ductile thinning laterally evolving to non-coaxial detachment faulting, while erosion feeds the surrounding sedimentary basins. Modeling of the Bouguer anomaly grid is compatible with crustal-scale mass transfers between a dense superstructure and a lighter infrastructure. The model implies that the Moldanubian Orlica-Snieznik mantled gneiss dome derives from polyphase recycling of Saxothuringian material.

Abstract: International audience; In a Barrovian metamorphic sequence, garnetiferous mica schists document a heterogeneously developed superposition of sub-orthogonal fabrics and multiple garnet growth episodes. In the variably deformed domains, four types of garnet porphyroblasts have been defined based on inclusion trail patterns. Modelled garnet zoning in the MnNCKFMASHTO system indicates a prograde evolution from 4-4.5 kbar and 490-510 C to 5-6 kbar and 520-550 C in the earliest subhorizontal fabric progressing towards 6.5-7.5 kbar and 560-590 C in the subsequent subvertical foliation. This fabric is heterogeneously deformed into a shallow-dipping retrograde foliation associated with garnet resorption. In situ electron backscatter diffraction measurements of ilmenite inclusions in individual garnet grains yield precise data on included planar and linear elements. Consistent orientations of internal foliations, lineations and foliation intersection axis sets indicate a superposition of three sub-orthogonal foliation systems. Weak variations of internal records with increasing intensity of deformation suggest that a moderate buckling stage occurred, but apparent lack of porphyroblast rotation is interpreted as a result of dominant passive flow. Coupling the orientation of internal fabric sets with P-T estimates is used to complement the tectono-metamorphic evolution of the thickened crust. We demonstrate that garnet porphyroblasts preserve features which reflect large-scale tectonic processes in orogens.

Abstract: International audience; Newly discovered eclogites, Early Cambrian carbonates and chloritoid-bearing metapelites form the Tsakhir Uul accretionary wedge, which was thrust during the Early Cambrian over the Mesoproterozoic Dzabkhan-Baydrag continent. The rock association of the wedge forms a tectonic window emerging through the hangingwall Khantaishir ophiolite unit, which preserves a typical Tethyan-type ophiolitic sequence. The eclogites correspond geochemically to T-MORB modified by fluid circulation. They are composed of garnet, omphacite, amphibole, rutile ±muscovite ±quartz ±epidote and exhibit well-equilibrated matrix textures. Jadeite content of the omphacite reaches up to 45 mol.%, the Si content of muscovite is between 3.40 and 3.45 p.f.u., amphibole is winchite to barroisite, but reaches tschermakitic composition at some rims, and garnet composition is grs0.24–0.36, alm0.43–0.56, py0.05–0.18, sps0.00–0.18, inline image. The peak assemblage, together with the composition of garnet rims, omphacite, amphibole and muscovite, correspond in a pseudosection to 20−22.5 kbar and 590−610 °C. The tschermakitic rim of amphibole is interpreted as partial reequilibration on decompression below 16 kbar and ∼600−630 °C. Two muscovite separates from the eclogite yielded an Ar–Ar plateau age of 543.1 ± 3.9 Ma (1σ) and a mean age of 547.9 ± 2.6 Ma (1σ), whereas muscovite from an interbedded garnet-chloritoid micaschist yielded an Ar–Ar plateau age of 536.9 ± 2.7 Ma (1σ); these ages are interpreted as cooling ages. The P–T data, geochemistry of eclogites and cooling ages suggest an affinity between the Tsakhir Uul wedge and the Gorny Altai and the north Mongolian blueschist belt, which are believed typical for subduction of warm oceanic lithosphere and closure of small oceanic basins. Thus, the discovery of the Tsakhir Uul eclogites represents an important finding suggesting extension of the Early Cambrian subduction system of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt far to the east in a region where it was not expected.

Abstract: International audience; The geological inventory of the Variscan Bohemian Massif can be summarized as a result of Early Devonian subduction of the Saxothuringian ocean of unknown size underneath the eastern continental plate represented by the present-day Teplá-Barrandian and Moldanubian domains. During mid-Devonian, the Saxothuringian passive margin sequences and relics of Ordovician oceanic crust have been obducted over the Saxothuringian basement in conjunction with extrusion of the Teplá-Barrandian middle crust along the so-called Teplá suture zone. This event was connected with the development of the magmatic arc further east, together with a fore-arc basin on the Teplá-Barrandian crust. The back-arc region – the future Moldanubian zone – was affected by lithospheric thinning which marginally affected also the eastern Brunia continental crust. The subduction stage was followed by a collisional event caused by the arrival of the Saxothuringian continental crust that was associated with crustal thickening and the development of the orogenic root system in the magmatic arc and back-arc region of the orogen. The thickening was associated with depression of the Moho and the flux of the Saxothuringian felsic crust into the root area. Originally subhorizontal anisotropy in the root zone was subsequently folded by crustal-scale cusp folds in front of the Brunia backstop. During the Visean, the Brunia continent indented the thickened crustal root, resulting in the root's massive shortening causing vertical extrusion of the orogenic lower crust, which changed to a horizontal viscous channel flow of extruded lower crustal material in the mid- to supra-crustal levels. Hot orogenic lower crustal rocks were extruded: (1) in a narrow channel parallel to the former Teplá suture surface; (2) in the central part of the root zone in the form of large scale antiformal structure; and (3) in form of hot fold nappe over the Brunia promontory, where it produced Barrovian metamorphism and subsequent imbrications of its upper part. The extruded deeper parts of the orogenic root reached the surface, which soon thereafter resulted in the sedimentation of lower-crustal rocks pebbles in the thick foreland Culm basin on the stable part of the Brunia continent. Finally, during the Westfalian, the foreland Culm wedge was involved into imbricated nappe stack together with basement and orogenic channel flow nappes.

Abstract: Findings 5585 families with Lynch syndrome from 22 countries were eligible for the analysis. Of these, there were insufficient numbers to estimate penetrance for Asia and South America, and for those with EPCAM variants. Therefore, we used data (collected between July 11, 2014, and Dec 31, 2018) from 5255 families (1829 MLH1, 2179 MSH2, 798 MSH6, and 449 PMS2), comprising 79 809 relatives, recruited in 15 countries in North America, Europe, and Australasia. There was strong evidence of the existence of unknown familial risk factors modifying colorectal cancer risk for Lynch syndrome carriers (p 0 center dot 0001 for each of the three three continents). These familial risk factors resulted in a wide within-gene variation in the risk of colorectal cancer for men and women from each continent who all carried pathogenic variants in the same gene or the MSH2 c.942+3A T variant. The variation was especially prominent for MLH1 and MSH2 variant carriers, depending on gene, sex and continent, with 7-56% of carriers having a colorectal cancer penetrance of less than 20%, 9-44% having a penetrance of more than 80%, and onlyBackground Existing clinical practice guidelines for carriers of pathogenic variants of DNA mismatch repair genes (Lynch syndrome) are based on the mean age-specific cumulative risk (penetrance) of colorectal cancer for all carriers of pathogenic variants in the same gene. We aimed to estimate the variation in the penetrance of colorectal cancer between carriers of pathogenic variants in the same gene by sex and continent of residence. Methods In this retrospective cohort study, we sourced data from the International Mismatch Repair Consortium, which comprises 273 members from 122 research centres or clinics in 32 countries from six continents who are involved in Lynch syndrome research. Families with at least three members and at least one confirmed carrier of a pathogenic or likely pathogenic variant in a DNA mismatch repair gene (MLH1, MSH2, MSH6, or PMS2) were included. The families of probands with known de-novo pathogenic variants were excluded. Data were collected on the method of ascertainment of the family, sex, carrier status, cancer diagnoses, and ages at the time of pedigree collection and at last contact or death. We used a segregation analysis conditioned on ascertainment to estimate the mean penetrance of colorectal cancer and modelled unmeasured polygenic factors to estimate the variation in penetrance. The existence of unknown familial risk factors modifying colorectal cancer risk for Lynch syndrome carriers was tested by use of a Wald p value for the null hypothesis that the polygenic SD is zero. Findings 5585 families with Lynch syndrome from 22 countries were eligible for the analysis. Of these, there were insufficient numbers to estimate penetrance for Asia and South America, and for those with EPCAM variants. Therefore, we used data (collected between July 11, 2014, and Dec 31, 2018) from 5255 families (1829 MLH1, 2179 MSH2, 798 MSH6, and 449 PMS2), comprising 79 809 relatives, recruited in 15 countries in North America, Europe, and Australasia. There was strong evidence of the existence of unknown familial risk factors modifying colorectal cancer risk for Lynch syndrome carriers (pT variant. The variation was especially prominent for MLH1 and MSH2 variant carriers, depending on gene, sex and continent, with 7-56% of carriers having a colorectal cancer penetrance of less than 20%, 9-44% having a penetrance of more than 80%, and only 10-19% having a penetrance of 40-60%. Interpretation Our study findings highlight the important role of risk modifiers, which could lead to personalised risk assessments for precision prevention and early detection of colorectal cancer for people with Lynch syndrome. 35. Comparing thin- and thick-skinned thrust tectonic models of the Central Apennines, Italy

Abstract: The geological structure of the Central Apennines along a section line across the Lazio-Abruzzi carbonate plat- form has traditionally been interpreted using a thin-skinned thrust tectonic model, in which the sedimentary cover has been detached from an undeformed basement below. Such models have been used to predict that very large amounts of crustal shortening (e.g. 172 km over a section 173 km long) have occurred. Alternatively, in this paper we reinterpret the surface geology and well data along the same section line us- ing a thick-skinned thrust tectonic model. Restoration of this section shows that the amount of shortening (37 km over a section 158 km long) is considerably lower than previously predicted; this is accomplished by open buckling of the car- bonate platform, tighter folding of the basin scarp stratig- raphy, and reactivation of pre-existing extensional faults. Age bracketing on thrust fault movement allows shortening rates for the two different models to be calculated; these are < 6 mm yr 1 for the new interpretation, but over 24 mm yr 1 for the equivalent thin-skinned model. This latter value is significantly greater than shortening rates reported for most other thrust belts, suggesting that thick-skinned tectonics is a more satisfactory explanation for the structure of this area. The two most important implications of this are that sub- thrust hydrocarbon plays are largely absent in the area, and Neogene contractional deformation in this part of the Apen- nines resulted in much less crustal shortening than previously predicted.

Abstract: International audience; The sediments of the Mauges Unit located in the internal zone provide an opportunity of studying the evolution of relief during Palaeozoic time. U-Pb dating on zircon and 39Ar/40Ar on white mica are used to constrain the age and nature of the sources. The first relief identified is marked by an Early Devonian unconformity interpreted as the opening of a northern back-arc basin. Detrital minerals are first reworked from underlying layers indicating a local supply. Magmatic zircons at c. 400 Ma then record the emergence of a magmatic arc. During the Middle Devonian, the gap in the sedimentary record is attributed to an emersion followed by the disappearance of the relief during the Late Devonian. At the Devonian-Carboniferous boundary, the main collision is followed by the onset of a relief. The continental sedimentation in the Ancenis Basin (late Tournaisian-Viséan) is a coarsening-upwards megasequence indicating an increasing and/or approaching relief. The detrital minerals record the progressive exhumation of Variscan metamorphic (mica at c. 350 Ma) and magmatic rocks (zircons at c. 390-340 Ma). The Serpukhovian-Bashkirian sedimentation records the erosion of a proximal metamorphic source (Champtoceaux with micas at c. 350-340 Ma) showing a much shorter drainage system

Abstract: International audience; A correlation between allochthonous units exposed in the NW Iberian Massif and the southern Armorican Massif is carried out based on lithological associations, structural position, age and geochemistry of protoliths and tectonometamorphic evolution. The units on both sides of the Bay of Biscay are grouped into Upper, Middle and Lower allochthons, whereas an underlying allochthonous thrust sheet identified in both massifs is referred to as the Parautochthon. The Lower Allochthon represents a fragment of the outermost edge of Gondwana that underwent continental subduction shortly after the closure of a Palaeozoic ocean which, in turn, is represented by the Middle Allochthon. The latter consists of supra-subduction ophiolites and metasedimentary sequences alternating with basic, mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB)-type volcanics, with inheritances suggesting the proximity of a continental domain. Seafloor spreading began at the Cambro-Ordovician boundary and oceanic crust was still formed during the Late Devonian, covering the lifetime of the Rheic Ocean, which is possibly represented by the Middle Allochthon. The opening of the oceanic domain was related to pulling apart the peri-Gondwanan continental magmatic arc, which is represented by the Upper Allochthon.

Abstract: International audience; The Variscan segment of the Pyrenees is well suited to study the timing of crustal-scaledeformations as crustal flow and gneiss dome formation. This has been constrained from a synthesisof available structural and geochronological data of intrusive rocks, as well as new zirconU–Pb age determinations via laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry(LA-ICP-MS). After a stage of moderate thickening by fold–thrust belt development in theupper crust between 323 and 308 Ma, the Variscan segment of the Pyrenees experienced crustalflow at c. 306 Ma and then gneiss dome formation at c. 304 Ma. Localization of the deformationalong reverse-dextral shear zones occurred at c. 300 Ma. The Variscan segment of the Pyreneesrecorded a high-temperature regime, which allowed crustal flow of the middle crust, but withlimited amounts of heat which induced rapid cooling. The development of this enigmatic orogenicsegment of the Variscan belt is closely contemporaneous with the formation of the Cantabrian Oroclineand could correspond to a lithospheric-scale shear zone that accommodated buckling of theorocline. Late Variscan lithospheric delamination and asthenospheric upwelling associated withbuckling in the core of the Cantabrian Orocline could explain the short-period high-temperatureregime in the Variscan segment of the Pyrenees.
