The inorganic multi-layer thin film encapsulation was newly adopted to protect the organic layer from moisture and oxygen. Using the electron beam, sputter, inorganic multi-layer thin-film encapsulation was deposited onto the Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) and their interface properties between inorganic and organic layer were investigated. In this investigation, the SiON, and parylene layer showed the most suitable properties. Under these conditions, the WVTR for PET can be reduced from level of (bare subtrate) to after application of a SiON and layer. These results indicates that the barrier coatings have high potential for flexible organic light-emitting diode(OLED) applications.

We studied liquid crystal (LC) alignment with ion beam (IB) on polyimide and electro-optical characteristics of twisted nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) on the polyimide surface using obliquely ion beam (IB) exposure with new IB type equipment. A good uniform alignment of the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment with the ion beam exposure on the polyimide surface was observed. In addition, it can be achieved the good EO properties of the ion-beam-aligned TN-LCD on polyimide surface. Also, the EO characteristics of the ion-beam-aligned TN-LCD on a polyimide (PI) surface with ion beam exposure using new type IB equipment is same or more superior than ion-beam-aligned TN-LCD on a polyimide (PI) surface with ion beam exposure using Kaufman-type Ar ion gun.

In this investigation, the SiON and Polyimide(PI) layer showed the most suitable properties. Under these conditions, the WVTR(water vapour transition rate) for PET can be reduced from level of (bare subtrate) to after application of a SiON and Polyimide layer. These results indicates that the SiON/PI/SiON/PI/PET barrier coatings have high potential for flexible organic light-emitting diode(OLED) applications.

Viewing angle characteristics of a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) using a in-plane driven (IPD) vertical alignment (VA) cell without a negative compensation film on a homeotropic alignment layer were studied. Good voltage-transmittance (V - T) curves were obtained using the rubbing aligned IPD- VA cell. However, instability and low transmittances of V - T characteristics in photo aligned IPD- VA cell was measured. The EO performance of a rubbingaligned IPD- VA cell without a negative compensation film was wider than that of photoaligned IPD- VA cell and conventional VA cell. Also, the fabrication processes using the rubbing aligned IPD- VA cell mode be carried out with only one-sided rubbing.
