Nagao's conjecture relates the rank of an elliptic surface to a limit formula arising from a weighted average of fibral Frobenius traces, and it is further generalized for smooth irreducible projective surfaces by M. Hindry and A. Pacheco. We show that the Sato-Tate conjecture based on the random matrix model implies Nagao's conjecture for certain twist families of elliptic curves and hyperelliptic curves.

Youths across cultures show an alarming prevalence of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). This study explored the effects of perceived peer popularity and relationship closeness on the reactions of youths with no NSSI history to peers engaging in NSSI. Two hundred and eighty young Koreans (mean age = 17.06) were asked about how they would respond to four hypothetical self-injuring characters. The results revealed that the participants evaluated unpopular peers and their NSSI more favorably, but were more willing to personally provide help to peers they were closer with, regardless of popularity. For close friends, the participants were more willing to provide emotional help than behavioral help, and their own unstable psychological conditions were associated with agreeable evaluations about NSSI. This paper provides suggestions for school counselors concerning youths’ social experiences and mental health.

In this paper, we define a $k$-Diophantine $m$-tuple to be a set of $m$ positive integers such that the product of any $k$ distinct positive integers is one less than a perfect square. We study these sets in finite fields $\mathbb{F}_p$ for odd prime $p$ and guarantee the existence of a $k$-Diophantine m-tuple provided $p$ is larger than some explicit lower bound. With the power conversion efficiency of binary polymer solar cells dramatically improved, the thermal stability of the small-molecule acceptors raised the main concerns on the device operating stability. Here, to address this issue, thiophene-dicarboxylate spacer tethered small-molecule acceptors are designed, and their molecular geometries are further regulated via the thiophene-core isomerism engineering, affording dimeric TDY-α with a 2, 5-substitution and TDY-β with 3, 4-substitution on the core. It shows that TDY-α processes a higher glass transition temperature, better crystallinity relative to its individual small-molecule acceptor segment and isomeric counterpart of TDY-β, and a more stable morphology with the polymer donor. As a result, the TDY-α based device delivers a higher device efficiency of 18.1%, and most important, achieves an extrapolated lifetime of about 35000 hours that retaining 80% of their initial efficiency. Our result suggests that with proper geometry design, the tethered small-molecule acceptors can achieve both high device efficiency and operating stability.

Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC), widely known for its biocompatibility and water solubility, is a polysaccharide with potential for pharmaceutical applications. Here, we synthesized polyethylenimine2k (PEI2k)-conjugated hydroxyethyl cellulose (HECP2k) for doxorubicin/Bcl-2 siRNA co-delivery systems. HECP2ks were synthesized by reductive amination of PEI2k with periodate-oxidized HEC. The synthesis of the polymers was characterized using 1H NMR, 13C NMR, primary amine quantification, FT-IR, and GPC. Via agarose gel electrophoresis and Zeta-sizer measurement, it was found that HECP2ks condensed pDNA to positively charged and nano-sized complexes (100–300 nm, ~30 mV). The cytotoxicity of HECP2ks was low and HECP2k 10X exhibited higher transfection efficiency than PEI25k even in serum condition, showing its high serum stability from ethylene oxide side chains. Flow cytometry analysis and confocal laser microscopy observation verified the superior cellular uptake and efficient endosome escape of HECP2k 10X. HECP2k 10X also could load Dox and Bcl-2 siRNA, forming nano-particles (HECP2k 10X@Dox/siRNA). By median effect analysis and annexin V staining analysis, it was found that HECP2k 10X@Dox/siRNA complexes could cause synergistically enhanced anti-cancer effects to cancer cells via induction of apoptosis. Consequently, it was concluded that HECP2k possesses great potential as a promising Dox/Bcl-2 siRNA co-delivery carrier.

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted the Republic of Korea’s Health Emergency and Disaster Risk Management (Health-EDRM). This study aims to examine the Republic of Korea’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on Health-EDRM, especially human resources, health services, and logistics. Challenges in the Republic of Korea, including lack of medical workforce, confused risk communication, shortage of hospital beds, and inefficient distribution of medical resources, have been highlighted in this paper in terms of human resources, health service delivery, and logistics, which are components of Health-EDRM. It is essential to address the cooperation between the government and private sectors, the protection of occupational health and safety of medical staff during the pandemic, and strategies and technologies to scale up the health facilities, to respond to a future crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic.

The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship between drainage density and climate, as represented by the climate aridity index, and to understand the relationship between drainage density and drainage area. A total of 121 study sites with low human impact, and a wide range of climate aridity index 0.3 (humid)–10.4 (arid), were selected based on the availability of light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data, producing a digital elevation model (DEM) with a spatial resolution of 1 m. A curvature-based method, incorporating both positive and negative curvature information, was used to extract the valley (drainage) network from the LiDAR-based DEMs. Drainage density and climate aridity index exhibited a monotonically increasing trend, contrary to the previous results that have shown a U-shaped relationship. This discrepancy was caused by the selection of watersheds with extensive human activity in the previous study. One-meter resolution DEM produced greater drainage density than the previous studies with a coarse spatial resolution of 30 m as small valleys are not detectable in low-resolution topography datasets. The discrepancy between the previous study and the current study results encouraged further investigation of the impact of the drainage area (watershed size). A negative correlation between drainage density and drainage area was reconfirmed, while a stronger decreasing trend was observed in arid regions than in humid regions.

This study assesses the characteristics of perennial streams using the dimensionless relationship between streamflow exceedance probability and the wet channel ratio based on a wet channel network extracted from light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data. LiDAR provides topographic data and signals’ intensity in high-resolution and with high accuracy to provide useful information for drainage networks and channel network extraction. In this study, a valley network and wet channel are extracted from LiDAR topographic and signals’ intensity information with a spatial resolution of 1 meter. Based on the available LiDAR data and streamflow observations from across the United States, we selected 30 watersheds with various climate conditions and analyzed the characteristics of their perennial streams. The wet channel ratio and perennial stream ratio were developed to define a perennial stream using the observed streamflow and the identified wet channel. The results of this study are consistent with previous studies on the definition of a perennial stream through transformation into a dimensionless form and confirmed the possibility of applying the wet channel ratio as an alternative parameter to define a perennial stream.

Objective More attempts have been made recently to improve psychosocial functioning and quality of life in patients with schizophrenia, due to their crucial role in long-term outcomes. Previous studies on the effects of clozapine on psychosocial functioning have been limited in terms of generalizability and application to clinical practice. This study examined the relationship of clozapine use with psychosocial functioning and quality of life in patients with schizophrenia in a real-world setting.Methods Data were obtained from a survey targeting community-dwelling patients with schizophrenia. The Behavior and Symptom Identification Scale (BASIS) and Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) were administered to evaluate psychosocial functioning and quality of life, and patients were classified into Clozapine and Non-clozapine groups. Group differences were assessed using ANCOVA, with additional sensitivity analyses for participants on atypical antipsychotic medications only.Results Of 292 patients, the Clozapine group (n=34) had significantly better psychosocial functioning and quality of life than the Nonclozapine group (n=258), as demonstrated by their low BASIS score (F=4.651, df=1, 290, p=0.032) and high SWLS score (F=14.637, df=1, 290, p

Perfectionism is a personality characteristic that has been explored for its implications in mental health; reviews and meta-analyses were conducted to synthesize research findings. This study systemically synthesizes the perfectionism literature using a text-mining approach. Co-word analysis and Dirichlet Multinomial Regression topic modeling were performed on a total of 1,529 perfectionism abstracts published from 1990 to 2019. Analysis revealed that perfectionism research is closely connected with “disorder,” with “symptom” being the most frequently addressed issue. Topic-modeling results found a total of 15 topics represented perfectionism research of the past three decades. Most articles were published in psychology journals, with social and clinical psychology subdisciplines publishing perfectionism articles most frequently. There were overlaps in research topics by journal subdisciplines, while differences were also observed. This study provides a panoramic view of perfectionism literature and highlights frequently and infrequently explored areas that could be considered in future research endeavors.

The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) is commonly used to assess the severity of the clinical symptoms of schizophrenia (SCZ). This study aimed to develop a pharmacokinetic (PK)/pharmacodynamic (PD) model based on therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) data to characterize the relationship between clozapine exposure and the PANSS scores in patients with SCZ.TDM data for clozapine and PANSS scores from 45 patients with SCZ were included in this modeling analysis using NONMEM®. Based on published data, intensive PK sampling data collected up to 12 h post-dose from 23 patients was incorporated into the PK dataset to improve the fitting of absorption and disposition. For PD model development, the PANSS score was assessed at baseline, followed by 8 and 18 weeks after the initiation of clozapine dosing. Visual predictive check plots, the precision of parameter estimates, and decreases in the minimum objective function values were used for the model evaluation.A two-compartment model with an absorption lag and combined error model adequately described the PK of clozapine. The implementation of disease progression with placebo and drug effects improved the model's ability to describe the time course of the PANSS scores. In the final PK/PD model, Weibull and maximum effect (Emax) models were selected as disease progression models for the placebo and drug effect models, respectively. The model evaluation results supported the adequacy of the final model.A clozapine PK/PD model based on clinical settings adequately described the PANSS time-course in patients with SCZ. These findings may aid the development of treatment strategies for patients with SCZ.

The dopamine blockade by antipsychotics trigger subjective dysphoria. Compared with D2 antagonists, aripiprazole, a D2 partial agonist, was expected to produce a different experience. Indeed, a previous study reported no relationship between the D2 receptor occupancy by aripiprazole and subjective dysphoria, while the D2 receptor occupancy by antagonists was associated with negative subjective experiences. This study revisited the relationship in patients treated with aripiprazole by using an inhibitory Emax model, which enables the individual drug-free binding potential and D2 receptor occupancy to be properly estimated. Eight patients with schizophrenia who have been clinically stable on aripiprazole were enrolled. Assessments including Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and Subjective Well-being under Neuroleptics Scale (Kv-SWN) were administered. [11C]raclopride PET scan were conducted 2, 26, and 74 h after aripiprazole administration. Regression analysis showed a significant negative association between the D2 receptor occupancy by aripiprazole in the striatum and the Kv-SWN (R2 = 0.55, p = 0.036), but the PANSS total score was not associated with the Kv-SWN (R2 = 0.42, p = 0.080). The negative association between D2 receptor occupancy by aripiprazole and subjective well-being implies that clinicians should find the lowest effective doses of aripiprazole for clinically stable patients to improve their subjective experiences and clinical outcomes.

Whereas most previous studies on (super-)gang effects examined cases where two weaker constraints jointly beat another stronger constraint (Albright 2012; Shih 2017; Breiss & Albright 2022), this paper addresses gang effects that arise from multiple violations of a single constraint, which Jäger & Rosenbach (2006) referred to as counting cumulativity. The super-additive version of counting cumulativity is the focus of this paper; cases where multiple violations of a weaker constraint not only overpower a single violation of a stronger constraint, but also surpass the mere multiplication of the severity of its single violation. I report two natural language examples where a morphophonological alternation in a compound is suppressed by the existence of marked segments in a super-additive manner: laryngeally marked consonants in Korean compound tensification and nasals in Japanese Rendaku. Using these two test cases, this paper argues that these types of super-additivity cannot be entirely captured by the traditional MaxEnt grammar; instead, a modified MaxEnt model is proposed, in which the degree of penalty is scaled up by the number of violations, through a power function. This paper also provides a computational implementation of the proposed MaxEnt model which learns necessary parameters given quantitative language data. A series of learning simulations on Korean and Japanese show that the MaxEnt learner is able to detect super-additive constraints and find the appropriate exponent values for those, correctly capturing the probability distributions in the input data.

A redox-active mixed ion and electron conductor (redox-active MIEC) is presented as a binder for the lithium titanate anodes of lithium-ion batteries. The redox-active MIEC binder (symbolized by PT*-GmCn) was designed to be (1) electrically conductive along its conjugated thiophene backbone (PT = polythiophene), (2) redox-active from its succinimide moiety (* = redox-active) and (3) ionically conductive by adopting glyme (G) branches. It was superior to the practically used PVdF binder in terms of lithium ion diffusivity and electrical conductivity (1.4× and 15 000×, respectively). High capacity was guaranteed, particularly at high rates due to its MIEC nature of PT*-GmCn, while an additional capacity was achieved from its redox activity.

Some of the most interesting open questions about the origins of life and molecular sciences center on chemical evolution and the spontaneous generation of new complex and functional chemical species. The spectacular polymers that underlay biology demonstrate an untapped, by modern science, creative potential. We hypothesized that prebiotic chemical evolutionary processes leading to biopolymers were not idiosyncratic one-off events. We have developed an experimental platform that accomplishes chemical evolution in the laboratory. In this paper we describe this platform and report empirical outcomes, some of which were not foreseen. We have constructed experimental platform to study evolution of chemical systems that: (i) undergo continuous recursive change with transitions to new chemical spaces while not converging, (ii) demonstrate stringent chemical selection, during which combinatorial explosion is avoided, (iii) maintain synchronicity of molecular sub-populations, and (iv) harvest environmental energy that is invested in chemical reactions. We have established general guidelines for conducting chemical evolution. Our results suggest that chemical evolution can be adapted to produce a broad array of molecules with novel structures and functions.

Although antipsychotic drugs are effective for relieving the psychotic symptoms of first-episode psychosis (FEP), psychotic relapse is common during the course of the illness. While some FEPs remain remitted even without medication, antipsychotic discontinuation is regarded as the most common risk factor for the relapse. Considering the actions of antipsychotic drugs on presynaptic and postsynaptic dopamine dysregulation, this study evaluated possible mechanisms underlying relapse after antipsychotic discontinuation. Twenty five FEPs who were clinically stable and 14 matched healthy controls were enrolled. Striatal dopamine activity was assessed as Kicer value using [18F]DOPA PET before and 6 weeks after antipsychotic discontinuation. The D2/3 receptor availability was measured as BPND using [11C]raclopride PET after antipsychotic discontinuation. Healthy controls also underwent PET scans according to the corresponding schedule of the patients. Patients were monitored for psychotic relapse during 12 weeks after antipsychotic discontinuation. 40% of the patients showed psychotic relapse after antipsychotic discontinuation. The change in Kicer value over time significantly differed between relapsed, non-relapsed patients and healthy controls (Week*Group: F = 4.827, df = 2,253.193, p = 0.009). In relapsed patients, a significant correlation was found between baseline striatal Kicer values and time to relapse after antipsychotic discontinuation (R2 = 0.518, p = 0.018). BPND were not significantly different between relapsed, non-relapsed patients and healthy controls (F = 1.402, df = 2,32.000, p = 0.261). These results suggest that dysfunctional dopamine autoregulation might precipitate psychotic relapse after antipsychotic discontinuation in FEP. This finding could be used for developing a strategy for the prevention of psychotic relapse related to antipsychotic discontinuation.

Objectives. Although unilateral hearing loss (UHL) has been proven to be associated with educational and behavioral problems, few studies have investigated psychopathological abnormalities in this population. The aim of this study was to evaluate the psychopathological influence of UHL among Korean 19-year-old males.Methods. The authors retrospectively compared the objective personality test profiles of 602 subjects with UHL with those of 23,790 peers with normal hearing. All participants in the current study were 19-year-old males who underwent a physical examination and completed the Korean Military Multiphasic Personality Inventory for conscription at the Military Manpower Administration from February 2015 to December 2016.Results.
