The B.Sc. project, Subsystems for 2nd Iteration Cairo University Cube-Satellite, addresses technology demonstration using commercially available electronics and low cost computing platforms, such as Android phones and Raspberry Pi Linux micro-computer as computing hardware. As for software, the project makes use of open-source modules and locally developed code to implement needed functionalities, in addition to a mechanism to operate a virtual desktop Linux OS in parallel to an Android application. The paper aims to demonstrate the significance, operation design, and problem solving of such approaches. The paper concludes with future prospects for improving upon the proposed computing systems

Motion estimation entails the major computation complexity load and processing time in HEVC video encoder. Integer-pixel Motion Estimation (IME) consume more than 45% of the processing time. Therefore, this paper presents a High-Level Synthesis Hardware Accelerator for Integerpixel Motion Estimation of HEVC on Xilinx SoC-FPGA Platform. The hardware accelerator is three time faster than the corresponding software implementation with only 100 MHz clock frequency on Xilinx Zynq ZC702 FPGA.

A new structure of composite right/left-handed (CRLH) coupled line coupler compact with high coupling value is presented and compared with the conventional coupled line microstrip coupler. Instead of the normal conductor (Copper) used in strip line, a YBCO thin film high temperature superconductor (HTS) is replaced to achieve superior performance. A high directivity of the coupled line was achieved by using superconductor. The coupled line coupler was designed based on the unit cell fabricated and it has good measured results. Two series of novel 1,3,4-thiadiazole-benzofuran and 1,3,4-thiadiazole-furochromene derivatives were synthesized through heterocyclization of alkyl 2-(1-(6-hydroxy-4,7-dimethoxybenzofuran-5-yl)ethylidene)hydrazine-1-carbodithioate 3a–f and 2-(1-(5-methoxy-8-methyl-2,6-dioxo-2,6-dihydropyrano[3,2-g]chromen-3-yl)ethylidene)hydrazinecarbothioamide 9a,b with various hydrazonoyl halides, respectively. The structure of the newly synthesized products was elucidated through elemental analysis, spectral data and alternative routes whenever possible. Ten new compounds were evaluated for their anticancer activity against the human breast carcinoma (MCF-7) cell lines in comparison with reference doxorubicin using MTT assay. The results showed that some new compounds have promising anticancer activity.

48 XXYY is a sex chromosome tetrasomy condition which causes tall stature, hypergonadotrophic hypogonadism, facial dysmorphism, developmental delay and behavioural difficulties.Over 100 cases have been published in the literature but there is little information on the ophthalmic findings in these patients. Previously reported ophthalmic findings have included Duane anomaly, high myopia and retinal dysfunction. We report a case of 48, XXYY syndrome in a child who presented with developmental delay. He was referred to Ophthalmology with a squint and on detailed examination was found to be hyperopic; with an unusual pigmented fundal appearance he had a normal electroretinogram and normal visual evoked potentials.

The type, shape, and gradation of aggregate have significant influence upon surface texture and its durability. The properties of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) are different from virgin aggregate. Previous research found that the presence of RAP influenced negatively the pavement surface terminal friction value and surface polishing rate. The objective of this research is to assess the impact of high content of RAP on pavement surface texture after five years of environmental and traffic loading. Field pavement textures were measured on sections with various percentages of RAP. The sections have been in service for five years at the time of testing. The three-dimensional (3D) surface texture is recovered by using a portable line-laser scanning device which has the ability to scan an area of 100 mm x 100 mm of pavement surface with a horizontal resolution finer than 0.05 mm, and vertical accuracy better than 0.1 mm. The recovered 3D texture heights are decomposed into five levels by using discrete wavelet transform to separate macro-texture from micro-texture. 3D texture indices were calculated and analyzed. These 3D texture parameters are indices of texture size both at macro-level and micro-level, spacing, distribution, and texture direction. Texture analysis showed that the macro-texture indices were better for sections with high RAP content than those with low RAP content at the time of testing, while micro-texture parameter shows equal or slightly higher value compared to control mixture. It was also found that the texture durability was slightly worse for high RAP content (50%) sections than those of lower RAP content sections. Pavement core samples were collected and characterized through creep compliance, indirect tensile test and resilient modulus. Laboratory results showed that as the amounts of RAP increases the rutting resistance increases, however, the resistance to low temperature cracking decreases as expected. As urban waterfronts around the world de-industrialize, cities are increasingly capitalizing on these opportunities to provide open space and alternative commuting routes along riverbanks, bringing residents and visitors back to the waterfronts. Cairo has remarkable opportunities to reconnect its people with the river that was historically its heart. In an intensive workshop involving 23 students and seven faculty from Cairo University (CU), The American University in Cairo (AUC), and the University of California, Berkeley (UCB), interdisciplinary teams systematically inventoried existing conditions along a 12-km reach of the Nile from Maadi to Tahrir Square, recording river-bank relations, building heights and conditions, circulation, and land-use.

Purpose: to identify the genetic variation in two unrelated probands with congenital cataract and to perform functional analysis of the detected variants. Methods: clinical examination and phenotyping, segregation and functional analysis were performed for the two studied pedigrees. Results: a novel OCRL gene variant (c.1964A>T, p. (Asp655Val)) was identified. This variant causes defects in OCRL protein folding and mislocalisation to the cytoplasm. In addition, the variant’s location close to the Rab binding site is likely to be associated with membrane targeting abnormalities. Conclusion: The results highlight the importance of early genetic diagnosis in infants with congenital cataract and show that mutations in the OCRL gene can present as apparently isolated congenital cataract.
