Abstract

8 pags., 4 figs., 3 tabs., The nuclear structure of 51Ar, an uncharted territory so far, was studied by the (p,2p) reaction using γ-ray spectroscopy for the bound states and the invariant mass method for the unbound states. Two peaks were detected in the γ-ray spectrum and six peaks were observed in the 50Ar+n relative energy spectrum. Comparing the results to our shell-model calculations, two bound and six unbound states were established. Three of the unbound states could only be placed tentatively due to the low number of counts in the relative energy spectrum of events associated with the decay through the first excited state of 50Ar. The low cross sections populating the two bound states of 51Ar could be interpreted as a clear signature for the presence of significant subshell closures at neutron numbers 32 and 34 in argon isotopes. It was also revealed that due to the two valence holes, unbound collective states coexist with individual-particle states in 51Ar., We are very grateful to the RIKEN Nishina Center accelerator staff for providing the stable beam and to the BigRIPS team for the smooth operation of the secondary beams. Abstract

There has been plenty of empirical evidence which shows that the single-particle picture holds to a good approximation in atomic nuclei. In this picture, protons and neutrons move independently inside a mean-field potential generated by an interaction among the nucleons. This leads to the concept of nuclear shells, similar to the electronic shells in atoms. In particular, the magic numbers due to closures of the nucleonic shells, corresponding to noble gases in elements, have been known to play an important role in nuclear physics. Here we propose a periodic table for atomic nuclei, in which the elements are arranged according to the known nucleonic shells. Abstract

Nuclear charge radii of 62−80Zn have been determined using collinear laser spectroscopy of bunched ion beams at CERN-ISOLDE. The subtle variations of observed charge radii, both within one isotope and along the full range of neutron numbers, are found to be well described in terms of the proton excitations across the Z=28 shell gap, as predicted by large-scale shell model calculations. It comprehensively explains the changes in isomer-to-ground state mean square charge radii of 69−79Zn, the inversion of the odd-even staggering around N=40 and the odd-even staggering systematics of the Zn charge radii. With two protons above Z=28, the observed charge radii of the Zn isotopic chain show a cumulative effect of different aspects of nuclear structure including single particle structure, shell closure, correlations and deformations near the proposed doubly magic nuclei, 68Ni and 78Ni., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Abstract

Excited states above the 17(+) isomeric state in the proton-rich nucleus Tm-152 were established by employing the recoil-isomer tagging technique. Data were collected using the JUROGAM gamma-ray array and the GREAT spectrometer together with the recoil ion transport unit (RITU) gas-filled recoil separator and analyzed to identify the prompt and delayed gamma decays from the levels in Tm-152. Shell-model calculations, either in a large valence space or in a reduced model space with five protons in the pi 0h(11)(/2) orbital and one neutron in the nu 1 f(7/2) orbital, agree with the observed energies of the yrast levels up to angular momentum J = 21. The observation of near degeneracies in the energy spectrum can be attributed to specific components of the proton-neutron interaction. The isomeric decay of the 17(+) level is not reproduced in the shell-model calculations as it arises from a delicate balance between hindrance due to seniority selection rules and enhancement due to configuration mixing.

Abstract

The nuclear g factor and quadrupole moment ( Q s ) have been measured for the low-lying isomeric 1 + state of 34Al, using the β-detected nuclear magnetic resonance (β-NMR) and quadrupole resonance (β-NQR) methods. Spin-polarized 34Al isotopes were produced in a one-neutron pickup reaction induced by a 36S beam on a 9Be target at a kinetic energy of 77.5 MeV/nucleon, and were collected with the LISE fragment separator at GANIL. The measured g factor ( | g | in a range of 1.757 ± 0.014 ) and quadrupole moment ( | Q s | = 38 ( 5 ) mb) are in good agreement with shell-model calculations using effective interactions. The similarity between the g factor of 34 m Al and that of 32Al confirms a dominant neutron 2 p 1 h configuration π ( d 5 / 2 ) − 1 ⊗ ν ( d 3 / 2 ) − 1 ( f 7 / 2 ) 2 of 34 m Al. In addition, the enhanced quadrupole moment of 34 m Al relative to that of 32Al suggests that the neutron 1 p 1 h excitation across the N = 20 shell gap introduces extra nucleon–nucleon correlation and deformation.

Abstract

Shell closures and their associated magic numbers of nucleons provide a unique means for studying the structure of exotic nuclei far from stability. An experiment was recently performed at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory to measure resonant elastic proton scattering on $^{46}$Ar in inverse kinematics in the region containing isobaric analogue states of $^{47}$Ar, an N=29 nucleus with one neutron above the N=28 shell closure. Four candidate resonances were observed: one corresponding to the 3/2− ground state of $^{47}$Ar, another corresponding to its 1/2− first excited state, and two that likely correspond to states in the $^{47}$K compound nucleus. The observed properties of the ground state resonance were compatible with values from the literature, but a significantly lower spectroscopic factor was found for the 1/2− state resonance.

Abstract

R. Lica et al. -- 6 pags., 3 figs. -- Open Access funded by Creative Commons Atribution Licence 4.0, The β- decay of Mg34 was used to study the Al34 nucleus through γ spectroscopy at the Isotope Separator On-Line facility of CERN. Previous studies identified two β-decaying states in Al34 having spin-parity assignments Jπ=4- dominated by the normal configuration π(d5/2)-1 - ν(f7/2) and Jπ=1+ by the intruder configuration π(d5/2)-1 - ν(d3/2)-1(f7/2)2. Their unknown ordering and relative energy have been the subject of debate for the placement of Al34 inside or outside the N=20 >island of inversion.> We report here that the 1+ intruder lies only 46.6 keV above the 4- ground state. In addition, a new half-life of T1/2=44.9(4)ms, that is twice as long as the previously measured 20(10) ms, has been determined for Mg34. Abstract

The recently confirmed neutron-shell closure at N = 32 has been investigated for the first time below the magic proton number Z = 20 with mass measurements of the exotic isotopes 52,53K, the latter being the shortest-lived nuclide investigated at the online mass spectrometer ISOLTRAP. The resulting two-neutron separation energies reveal a 3 MeV shell gap at N = 32, slightly lower than for 52Ca, highlighting the doubly-magic nature of this nuclide. Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Boguliubov and ab initio Gorkov-Green function calculations are challenged by the new measurements but reproduce qualitatively the observed shell effect., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Abstract

The charge and mass transition matrix elements of the neutron-rich isotopes Mg-30,Mg-32 have been extracted from inelastic scattering on Pb-208 and C-12 targets at 32 A MeV. The measured inelastic cross sections for the first 2(+) states were compared to coupled-channels calculations, which take into account the feeding from higher excited states. The method was tested with Mg-24 inelastic scattering data obtained in the same experiment. In the framework of the rotational model, the charge and mass deformations are identical and large (\ beta \ similar to 0.5-0.6) for both isotopes. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. Abstract

Conference on Frontiers in Nuclear Structure, Astrophysics, and Reactions -- SEP 10-14, 2007 -- Crete, GREECE, WOS: 000256223700023, Medium and high spin states of the nuclei close to the N=50 shell closure are investigated Using deep inelastic and multi-nucleon transfer reactions. New excited states of the nuclei Ga-81, Ge-82 and As-83 at N=50 shell closure have been identified by means of the Se-82+U-238 reaction. Gamma rays have been acquired using the PRISMA-CLARA setup of the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, Italy (LNL)., NCSR, Univ Jyvaskyla, Natl Tech Univ Athens, Greek Minist Educ, U.S. Department of Energy [DE-AC05-00OR22725], I wish to thank the staff of HRIBF for their dedication in the production of RIBs.
