Stemodia verticillata (Mill.) Hassl. (Scrophulariaceae) was found in the lowlands of northern Taiwan. This represents a new naturalization not only for this species but also for the genus on this island. A taxonomic account of S. verticillata is treated in this study. A line-drawing, distribution map and photographs of this species are also provided to aid in identification.

A series of poly(aryl ether)s were successfully prepared via aromatic nucleophilic substitution reaction from various bisphenols and a novel bipolar aryl difluoride monomer containing electron-donor triphenylamine and electron-acceptor 1,2,4-triazole moieties. The poly(aryl ether)s exhibited excellent solubility in organic solvents such as dimethylformamide, chloroform, and tetrahydrofuran at room temperature. The poly(aryl ether)s showed high thermal stability with T d10 higher than 500 °C and glass transition temperatures (Tg) higher than 187 °C. The thin films of the poly(aryl ether)s indicated bistable resistive switching behavior with ON/OFF current ratios as high as 10 3 . The switching on and switching off bias voltages of the poly(aryl ether)s were affected by the bisphenol moiety. The good resistive switching behavior of the poly(aryl ether)s made them promising candidates for future nonvolatile memory applications.

Queuing models and simulation are two primary methods applied to container terminal planning. Queuing models tend to result in underestimated outcomes due to ships and berths not being classified by size and length. This paper classified both ships and berths using actual data and then compared the resultant differences of the scenarios with and without classification with the simulation. The comparison shows that the outcomes with and without the classification of ships and berths are located opposite to the outcomes obtained from the simulation, which was deliberately constructed and rendered sufficiently accurate results. The optimal scale of facilities of a container terminal is located between the outcomes of the two proposed scenarios. There is no longer a need to establish a complex and tedious simulation model. The method proposed in this paper provides a convenient way to determine the optimum number of berths and facilities for a container terminal.

The first collection of Quercus aliena Blume var. acutiserrata Maxim. Ex Wenz. In Taiwan was made by Y. Shimada in 1924 from Hongmao. Since then, no other specimen had ever been collected. Recently, this species was rediscovered from Fengshan (3 km south of Hongmao) in Hsinchu County. On closer studies it was found to be the typical variety of Q. aliena Blume rather than the name recognized by Shimada. The population of Q. aliena is quite small at that limited location, and is vulnerable to human impacts. Therefore, it is necessary to take steps to conserve the habitat as soon as possible. The taxonomic treatment, morphological descriptions, photographs and notes of the species are given here. A key to distinguish it from the other three closely related Taiwanese species is also provided.

We report a species, Cissus elongata Roxb. which was collected from center and northern Taiwan. Cissus elongata is easily distinguished by the presence of five leaflets compared to the simple leaf in the other species of Taiwan. The populations from Hsinchu represents the northern distribution limit of C. elongata, which was previously known with the distributional range from Mainland China, Vietnam, India, Bhutan and Sikkim.

Given the recent prevalence of periodical container liners, the applicability of related models of widely applied queuing theory is left in doubt. Since they focus on marine liners, the distribution pattern is always considered to be a deterministic distribution for periodical schedule. In order to investigate the distribution patterns of container liners, observation units are segmented into single shipping liners, single berths, single container terminals and entire ports. The evolution of the ship arrival distribution pattern and the goodness-of-fit test for observation are based on the ship dynamic data of international harbors in Taiwan. This study aims to implement tests for public and dedicated container berths by comparing the variance in the patterns and characteristics of the ship arrival distributions. The ship inter-arrival distribution in the foregoing systems was found to follow the Erlang distribution; its distribution coefficient (k), changed by observation system, tends to decrease as the system's scale grows.
