16th International Conference on Harmonisation within Atmospheric Dispersion Modelling for Regulatory Purposes, HARMO 2014 -- 8 September 2014 through 11 September 2014 -- 112323 The Bulgarian Chemical Weather Forecast System, based on WRF-CMAQ models is applied with 9km resolution for air pollution simulations in the cross-border region Bulgaria-Turkey, known for its natural parks with rich biodiversity and tourism activities in summer. Model results are compared to observations from 5 surface stations focussing on PM10, O3, NO2 and SO2 in February and June 2014. The preliminary analysis based on evaluation of some main statistics (mean, correlation, temporal variation) reveals that the model system performs well for ozone in summer, while PM10 and NO2 concentrations are underestimated. The result indicate some of the air quality problems of the region - high ozone in summer, high SO2 values in parts of the Turkish territory in winter and high PM10 daily mean concentrations in winter. © Crown Copyright 2014 Dstl.

Five regional scale models with a horizontal domain covering the European continent and its surrounding seas, one hemispheric and one global scale model participated in an atmospheric mercury modelling intercomparison study. Model-predicted concentrations in ambient air were compared against mercury species observed at four monitoring stations in Central and Northern Europe and a station on the Irish west coast. The modelled concentrations of total particulate mercury (TPM) were generally consistent with the measurements at all sites. The models exhibited significant ability to simulate concentrations of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM), but some of the short-duration peaks at the Central European stations could not be consistently reproduced. Possible reasons for these discrepancies include (1) errors in the anthropogenic emissions inventory utilized; (2) coarse spatial resolution of the models; and (3) uncertainty of natural and re-emitted mercury sources. The largest discrepancies between measurements and modelled concentrations were found for reactive gaseous mercury (RGM). For these models, the uncertainty in predicting short-term (two-week episode) variations of mercury species in air can be characterized by the following overall statistics: 90% of the results for TGM are within a factor of 1.35 of the measurements; for TPM, 90% are within a factor of 2.5; and for RGM, 90% are within a factor of 10.

The present work aims at a detailed study and explanation of the pollution transport in the air basin over south-western Bulgaria and northern Greece and assessment of the air pollution exchange between Bulgaria and Greece. Some well-known specific climatic air pollution effects were studied and explained. Calculations were made of the SO2 pollution of the Balkan Peninsula from both Greek and Bulgarian sources for 1995, and the country-to-country pollution budget diagrams were built. Days with extreme mean concentration for Bulgaria and northern Greece were picked out, and some further specification of the contribution of the different sources in both the countries to these cases of extreme pollution was made. Some preliminary studies of possible mesoscale effects on the pollution exchange between Bulgaria and northern Greece were carried out. A three-layer pollution transport model with a more complex chemistry block was introduced, and some preliminary simulations of the transport of sulfur and nitrogen compounds were performed.

Here we presents results of an experimental campaign performed in October 2016 in Ahtopol (Bulgaria) in the context of Exchange program between ISAC-CNR and NIHM-BAS research centers. The aim of the campaign is to collect aerosols in the coastal area, together with physical parameters; to consider air-masses circulation from meteorological output and to demonstrate that for some period Ahtopol and Lamezia Terme sites are in the same system. Evidence of aerosols circulation is also given by using HYSPLIT model for a better understanding of pollution sources also by chemical analysis form wet and dry deposition and filters from impactor.

Coastal meteorology is characterised with complex physical and chemical processes related to aerosols exchange and transport. Aerosol measurements in Bulgaria are rare in areas outside big cities which makes extremely valuable the 3-year effort of a bilateral project between BAS and CNR to perform experimental campaigns at a rural Black Sea coastal site. Not only the concentration of different fractions of PM, but also the chemical composition of aerosols was studied during three short experimental studies in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

Apart from just determining atmospheric concentrations and the level of pollution, various properties of aerosols and their relative compositions can be used to comment on their natural and anthropogenic sources or their local and distant sources. Among various techniques, interpretation of the relation of sources to the size distributions of aerosols, and their size dependent solubilities have been shortly summarized here.
