1. Mechanical and Tribological Properties of CrWN Nanostructured Hard Films

Abstract

This work determines optimal settings for the deposition parameters of CrWN hardened, nanocomposite films grown on tungsten carbide tools and glass substrates with direct current (DC) reactive magnetron co-sputtering. Using metallic Cr and W targets, argon was the plasma gas and nitrogen was the reactive gas. An orthogonal array, the signal-to-noise ratio and analysis of variance are together used to analyze the effect of the deposition parameters. The Taguchi method was used to design a robust experiment. Then deposition parameters of the CrWN hard films, including Cr DC power (Watts), W DC power (Watts), N2/(Ar+N2) flow-rate ratios (%) and deposition time (min) were optimized with reference to structure of the films, dry turning tests of AISI 316 stainless steel (50 mm diameter) and wear tests of CrWN films. This study uses a grey-based Taguchi method to determine the parameters of the coating process for CrWN hard films by considering multiple performance characteristics. In the confirmation runs, according to grey relational analysis, improvements were noted of 6.17% in the surface roughness, 26.27% in the flank wear, and 6% in the coefficient of friction. The wear resistance of CrWN films can be evaluated by considering the other mechanical properties, including elastic recovery, hardness and Young’s modulus, which are obtained from the nanoindentation testing.

SummaryWhat is known and objective Rhabdomyolysis is a severe potential adverse drug reaction of statin therapy. We report a case of rhabdomyolysis due to drug–drug interaction (DDI) between atorvastatin and fluconazole and review the literature. Case summary A 70-year-old woman received atorvastatin for hyperlipidaemia without any problem for 4 years. When intravenous fluconazole was added for treating a fungal infection, rhabdomyolysis developed 2 weeks later. Removal of atorvastatin led to the resolution of her rhabdomyolysis. What is new and conclusion Our case demonstrates that in some subjects even a moderate CYP3A4 inhibitor such as fluconazole may lead to rhabdomyolysis in subjects receiving a statin.

3. The mechanisms and mechanics of the toughening of epoxy polymers modified with silica nanoparticles

Abstract

The present paper considers the mechanical and fracture properties of four different epoxy polymers containing 0, 10 and 20 wt.% of well-dispersed silica nanoparticles. Firstly, it was found that, for any given epoxy polymer, their Young’s modulus steadily increased as the volume fraction, v f, of the silica nanoparticles was increased. Modelling studies showed that the measured moduli of the different silica-nanoparticle filled epoxy polymers lay between upper-bound values set by the Halpin–Tsai and the Nielsen ‘no-slip’ models, and lower-bound values set by the Nielsen ‘slip’ model; with the last model being the more accurate at relatively high values of v f . Secondly, the presence of silica nanoparticles always led to an increase in the toughness of the epoxy polymer. However, to what extent a given epoxy polymer could be so toughened was related to structure/property relationships which were governed by (a) the values of glass transition temperature, T g , and molecular weight, M c , between cross-links of the epoxy polymer, and (b) the adhesion acting at the silica nanoparticle/epoxy-polymer interface. Thirdly, the two toughening mechanisms which were operative in all the epoxy polymers containing silica nanoparticles were identified to be (a) localised shear bands initiated by the stress concentrations around the periphery of the silica nanoparticles, and (b) debonding of the silica nanoparticles followed by subsequent plastic void growth of the epoxy polymer. Finally, the toughening mechanisms have been quantitatively modelled and there was good agreement between the experimentally-measured values and the predicted values of the fracture energy, G c , for all the epoxy polymers modified by the presence of silica nanoparticles. The modelling studies have emphasised the important roles of the stress versus strain behaviour of the epoxy polymer and the silica nanoparticle/epoxy-polymer interfacial adhesion in influencing the extent of the two toughening mechanisms, and hence the overall fracture energy, G c , of the nanoparticle-filled polymers.

Abstract

Experimental data from inhalation studies in rats were used to develop mathematical models of deposition, clearance, and retention kinetics for inhaled Ni compounds (high-temperature [green] NiO, Ni3S2, and NiSO4*6H2O) in the rat lung. For deposition, an updated version of an earlier model (Yu & Xu, 1986) was used in this study. Three major mechanisms of airway deposition-impaction, sedimentation, and diffusion-were considered in the deposition model. In the development of a clearance model, a single compartment model in the lung was used and a general assumption was made that the clearance of the insoluble and moderately soluble nickel compounds (high-temperature [green] NiO and Ni3S2, respectively) depends highly on the volume of retained particles in the lungs. For the highly soluble nickel compound (NiSO4 *6H2O), the clearance rate coefficient was assumed to depend on the retained particle mass and total alveolar surface. The retention half-time, however, was found to increase with the lung burden for high-temperature (green) NiO and NiSO4*6H2O particles but decrease with the lung burden for Ni3S2 particles.

Existing experimental data on pulmonary clearance of low-toxicity, poorly soluble particles in several mammalian species including the rat, mouse, guinea pig, dog, monkey, and human have been analyzed using a two-exponential time-decay function with one exponential representing the fast clearance phase and the other for the slow clearance phase. Mass fractions of both clearance phases and the corresponding clearance rates were determined from the lung burden data for different specific initial lung burdens (initial lung burden/ lung weight). It was found that the slow clearance mass fraction increased with lung burden for all species, and it approached almost 100% when the specific initial lung burden exceeded 1 mg/ g lung. However, the slow clearance mass fraction at low lung burdens was found to be much higher for the slow-clearing species (guinea pig, dog, monkey, and human) than for the fast-clearing species (rat and mouse). Abstract

We investigate the outcome of performing tongue base reduction surgery and palatopharyngeal surgery in a single stage to determine whether the same-stage midline laser glossectomy (MLG) with extended uvulopalatal flap (EUPF) for obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) is a safe and effective procedure. Six male patients with a history of severe OSAS were recruited into the retrospective study. They were the first patients to undergo the MLG with EUPF procedure. Patients were identified to have retropalatal and hypopharyngeal sites of obstruction on the basis of fiberoptic endoscopy with Muller's manoeuvre and three-dimensional computerised tomography. No significant adverse events occurred. The follow-up polysomnography (6-month follow-up) revealed that the mean respiratory disturbance index from 50.7 to 11.6, snoring index from 230.9 to 137.3 and the minimal oxygen saturation from 76.3 to 88.8. This study confirms that the same-stage MLG with EUPF for OSAS is a safe and effective procedure.

Abstract

A cylinder-type Metal-Insulator-Metal (MIM) capacitor integrated with advanced 28nm logic High-K/Metal-Gate (HKMG) process for embedded DRAM has been developed. The stacked cell capacitor is formed using low temperature high-K dielectrics to achieve sufficient storage capacitance without significantly impacting logic transistors. This paper describes techniques to achieve cylinder-type MIM capacitor's capacitance >10fF/cell and keep the low leakage (10 years). The test vehicle is composed of 72 macros of 4.5Mb each. We successfully demonstrate fully functional good yield of 28nm eDRAM 324Mb test vehicle with access speed >330MHz.

Abstract

Measuring quantitatively the nanoparticle dispersion of a composite material requires more than choosing a particular parameter and determining its correspondence to good and bad dispersion. It additionally requires anticipation of the measure’s behaviour towards imperfect experimental data, such as that which can be obtained from a limited number of samples. It should be recognised that different samples from a common parent population can give statistically different responses due to sample variation alone and a measure of the likelihood of this occurring allows a decision on the dispersion to be made. It is also important to factor into the analysis the quality of the data in the micrograph with it: (a) being incomplete because some of the particles present in the micrograph are indistinguishable or go unseen; (b) including additional responses which are false. With the use of our preferred method, this article investigates the effects on the measured dispersion quality of nanoparticles of the micrograph’s magnification settings, the role of the fraction of nanoparticles visible and the number of micrographs used. It is demonstrated that the best choice of magnification, which gives the clearest indication of dispersion type, is dependent on the type of nanoparticle structure present. Furthermore, it is found that the measured dispersion can be modified by particle loss, through the limitations of micrograph construction, and material/microscope imperfections such as cut marks and optical aberrations which could lead to the wrong conclusions being drawn. The article finishes by showing the versatility of the dispersion measure by characterising various different spatial features.

Abstract

A highly manufacturable embedded DRAM technology at 40nm node is presented. This report provides the characterization data of 128Mbit embedded DRAM test vehicle fabricated by 40nm eDRAM 200MHz low power process. The test vehicle is composed of 32 macros and each macro unit is 4Mb with configuration 32k×128 bits. The process is cost effective and compatible to our low power Logic core process with three additional critical masks to the base process. The DRAM memory cell consists of a high performance pass gate transistor and a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) storage capacitor with a cell size of 0.0583 um2 (< 1/4 of SRAM 0.242 um2) and small macro size of 0.145 mm2 per Mega bits (Mb). The stacked cell capacitor is formed using low temperature processed high-k dielectrics to achieve sufficient storage capacitance in DRAM cell. Low cell device leakage below 20 fA/cell at 105°C with silicided node process coupled with the high-k storage capacitance. The macro design for random access speed can operate from 25MHz to 200 MHz comparable to 6T SRAM. It has built-in ECC parity generation and correction circuits with memory storage space used for storing parity bits. The characterization is based on 200MHz, covering Vcc+/−15% at 125°C/ 105°C/ 25°C/ −40°C. Process corner skew includes core device corners TT/FS/SF/FF/SS and fast/slow cell device. Highly manufacturing yield of 128Mb macro is achieved to demonstrate the maturity of technology. The excellent cosmic ray (neutron) soft error rate (SER) performance of less than 4FITs/Mb is also achieved. The integration technologies can be applicable to the future embedded DRAM in 28nm, 20nm node and beyond.

14. The Effect of Silica Nanoparticles and Carbon Nanotubes on the Toughness of a Thermosetting Epoxy Polymer

Abstract

Silica nanoparticles and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been incorporated into an anhydride-cured epoxy-resin to form ‘hybrid’ nanocomposites. A good dispersion of the silica nanoparticles was found to occur, even at relatively high concentrations of the nanoparticles. However, in contrast, the MWCNTs were not so well dispersed but relatively agglomerated. The glass transition temperature of the epoxy polymer was 145°C, and was not significantly affected by the addition of the silica nanoparticles or the MWCNTs. The Young’s modulus was increased by the addition of the silica nanoparticles, but the addition of up to 0.18 wt% MWCNTs had no further significant effect. The addition of both MWCNTs and silica nanoparticles led to a significant improvement in the fracture toughness of these polymeric nanocomposites. For example, the fracture toughness was increased from 0.69 MPam 1/2 for the unmodified epoxy polymer to 1.03 MPam 1/2 for the hybrid nanocomposite containing both 0.18 wt% MWCNTs and 6.0 wt% silica nanoparticles; and the fracture energy was also increased from 133 J/m 2 to 204 J/m 2 . The mechanisms responsible for the enhancements in the measured toughness were identified by observing the fracture surfaces using field-emission gun scanning-electron microscopy.

Abstract

A study of quantum confinement effects on the low‐dimensional electron mobility in various AlGaAs/GaAs quantum well/wire structures has been performed. The influence of the electron envelop wave function and the subband structure on the low‐dimensional electron scattering rates is evaluated. The electron transport behavior is studied through a Monte Carlo simulation. The result shows that the low‐dimensional electron mobility varies significantly with the quantum well/wire geometry. The one‐dimensional electron mobility of 9200 cm2/V s is obtained in a rectangular quantum wire with a geometry of 110 A×110 A. This value is much improved in comparison with the bulk electron mobility of 8000 cm2/V s in intrinsic GaAs and the maximum two‐dimensional electron mobility of 8600 cm2/V s in a 120 A GaAs quantum well. It is also noticed that the highest low‐dimensional electron mobility is achieved in a quantum well/wire structure where the energy separation between the first subband and the second subband is about two polar optical phonon energy.

Abstract

Novel double-layer microstrip array antennas are introduced for high-gain applications. In the proposed antennas, the complex and lossy feed network is not needed. Rather the double structure provides the field distribution at the aperture for the beam-focusing effect. A relatively simple design method based on a cavity model is presented.

Abstract

Dielectric droplets are successfully manipulated by electropolarization forces in a parallel plate device, which extends the liquid handling capability of digital microfluidics from merely conductive droplets to dielectric ones. Actuations of silicone oil, decane, and hexadecane droplets in a 150-mum-high gap between parallel plates are demonstrated. Silicone oil droplets of different viscosities, 20 and 50 cSt, are transported and split in various gaps heights, demonstrating the manipulation capabilities of electropolarization forces. The threshold and splitting voltages are measured and compared. Moreover, the relationship between the velocity and driving voltage is studied.

Abstract

We investigate the outcome of performing tongue base reduction surgery and palatopharyngeal surgery in a single stage to determine whether the same-stage midline laser glossectomy (MLG) with extended uvulopalatal flap (EUPF) for obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) is a safe and effective procedure. Six male patients with a history of severe OSAS were recruited into the retrospective study. They were the first patients to undergo the MLG with EUPF procedure. Patients were identified to have retropalatal and hypopharyngeal sites of obstruction on the basis of fiberoptic endoscopy with Muller's manoeuvre and three-dimensional computerised tomography. No significant adverse events occurred. The follow-up polysomnography (6-month follow-up) revealed that the mean respiratory disturbance index from 50.7 to 11.6, snoring index from 230.9 to 137.3 and the minimal oxygen saturation from 76.3 to 88.8. This study confirms that the same-stage MLG with EUPF for OSAS is a safe and effective procedure.

Abstract

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes, with a typical length of 140 μm and a diameter of 120 nm, have been used to modify an anhydride-cured epoxy polymer. The modulus, fracture energy and the fatigue performance of the modified polymers have been investigated. Microscopy showed that these long nanotubes were agglomerated, and that increasing the nanotube content increased the severity of the agglomeration. The addition of nanotubes increased the modulus of the epoxy, but the glass transition temperature was unaffected. The measured fracture energy was also increased, from 133 to 223 J/m2 with the addition of 0.5 wt% of nanotubes. The addition of the carbon nanotubes also resulted in an increase in the fatigue performance. The threshold strain-energy release-rate, G th, increased from 24 J/m2 for the unmodified material to 73 J/m2 for the epoxy with 0.5 wt% of nanotubes. Electron microscopy of the fracture surfaces showed clear evidence of nanotube debonding and pull-out, plus void growth around the nanotubes, in both the fracture and fatigue tests. The modelling study showed that the modified Halpin–Tsai equation can fit very well with the measured values of the Young’s modulus, when the orientation and agglomeration of the nanotubes are considered. The fracture energy of the nanotube-modified epoxies was predicted, by considering the contributions of the toughening mechanisms of nanotube debonding, nanotube pull-out and plastic void growth of the epoxy. This indicated that debonding and pull-out contribute to the toughening effect, but the contribution of void growth is not significant. There was excellent agreement between the predictions and the experimental results.

Abstract

The present paper investigates the effect of adding silica nanoparticles to an anhydride-cured epoxy polymer in bulk and when used as the matrix of carbon- and glass-fibre reinforced composites. The formation of ‘hybrid’ epoxy polymers, containing both silica nanoparticles and carboxyl-terminated butadiene-acrylonitrile (CTBN) rubber microparticles, is also discussed. The structure/property relationships are considered, with an emphasis on the toughness and the toughening mechanisms. The fracture energy of the bulk epoxy polymer was increased from 77 to 212 J/m2 by the presence of 20 wt% of silica nanoparticles. The observed toughening mechanisms that were operative were (a) plastic shear-yield bands, and (b) debonding of the matrix from the silica nanoparticles, followed by plastic void-growth of the epoxy. The largest increases in toughness observed were for the ‘hybrid’ materials. Here a maximum fracture energy of 965 J/m2 was measured for a ‘hybrid’ epoxy polymer containing 9 wt% and 15 wt% of the rubber microparticles and silica nanoparticles, respectively. Most noteworthy was the observation that these increases in the toughness of the bulk polymers were found to be transferred to the fibre composites. Indeed, the interlaminar fracture energies for the fibre-composite materials were increased even further by a fibre-bridging toughening mechanism. The present work also extends an existing model to predict the toughening effect of the nanoparticles in a thermoset polymer. There was excellent agreement between the predictions and the experimental data for the epoxy containing the silica nanoparticles, and for epoxy polymers containing micrometre-sized glass particles. The latter, relatively large, glass particles were investigated to establish whether a ‘nano-effect’, with respect to increasing the toughness of the epoxy bulk polymers, did indeed exist.

Abstract

A precision measurement by AMS of the positron fraction in primary cosmic rays in the energy range from 0.5 to 500 GeV based on 10.9 million positron and electron events is presented. This measurement extends the energy range of our previous observation and increases its precision. The new results show, for the first time, that above ∼200 GeV the positron fraction no longer exhibits an increase with energy.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the cosmic ray (e^+ + e^-) flux in the range 0.5 GeV to 1 TeV based on the analysis of 10.6 million (e^+ + e^-) events collected by AMS. The statistics and the resolution of AMS provide a precision measurement of the flux. The flux is smooth and reveals new and distinct information. Above 30.2 GeV, the flux can be described by a single power law with a spectral index γ = −3.170 +/- 0.008 (stat + syst) +/- 0.008 (energy scale)

Abstract

International audience; Precision measurements by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer on the International Space Station of the primary cosmic-ray electron flux in the range 0.5 to 700 GeV and the positron flux in the range 0.5 to500 GeV are presented. The electron flux and the positron flux each require a description beyond a single power-law spectrum. Both the electron flux and the positron flux change their behavior at∼30GeV but the fluxes are significantly different in their magnitude and energy dependence. Between 20 and 200 GeV the positron spectral index is significantly harder than the electron spectral index. The determination of the differing behavior of the spectral indices versus energy is a new observation and provides important information on the origins of cosmic-ray electrons and positrons.
