Abstract

Two-proton relative momentum (qpp) and opening angle (θpp) distributions from the three-body decay of two excited proton-rich nuclei, namely Al23→p+p+Na21 and Mg22→p+p+Ne20, have been measured with the projectile fragment separator (RIPS) at the RIKEN RI Beam Factory. An evident peak at qpp∼20 MeV/c as well as a peak in θpp around 30° are seen in the two-proton break-up channel from a highly-excited 22Mg. In contrast, such peaks are absent for the 23Al case. It is concluded that the two-proton emission mechanism of excited 22Mg is quite different from the 23Al case, with the former having a favorable diproton emission component at a highly excited state and the latter dominated by the sequential decay process.

3. Development of three-dimensional dose verification system using a fluorescent screen in ion beam therapy

Abstract

For quality assurance (QA) of therapeutic ion beams, QA tool having high spatial resolution and quick verification is required. The imaging system with a fluorescent screen is suitable for QA procedure. We developed a quick verification system (NQA-SCN) using a fluorescent screen with a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera for the sake of two dimensional dosimetry. In carbon-ion therapy, the fluorescent light is decreased by suffering from quenching effect due to the increased linear energy transfer (LET) in the Bragg peak. For the use of three-dimensional dose verification, we performed a simple correction for quenching effect and several types of corrections for the optical artifact. In addition, NQA-SCN is attached with an accordion-type water phantom which makes it possible to easily change measurement depth. To evaluate the performance of NQA-SCN, we carried out experiments concerning QA procedures. Abstract

The halo structure of Ne31 is studied using 1n-removal reactions on C and Pb targets at 230 MeV/nucleon. A combined analysis of the cross sections of these nuclear and Coulomb dominated reactions that feed directly the Ne30 ground-state reveals Ne31 to have a small neutron separation energy, 0.15+0.16−0.10 MeV, and spin-parity 3/2−. Consistency of the data with reaction and large-scale shell-model calculations identifies Ne31 as deformed and having a significant p-wave halo component, suggesting that halos are more frequent occurrences at the neutron drip line.

Abstract

The structure of the neutron rich sodium isotopes 31,32,33Na was investigated by means of in-beam gammaray spectroscopy following one-neutron knockout and inelastic scattering of radioactive beams provided by the RIKEN Radioactive Ion Beam Factory. The secondary beams were selected and separated by the fragment separator BigRIPS and incident at ~240 meV/u on a natural carbon (secondary) target, which was surrounded by the DALI2 array to detect coincident de-excitation gammarays. Scattered particles were identified by the spectrometer ZeroDegree. In 31Na, a new decay gammaray was observed in coincidence with the known (5/2+)-> 3/2(+) transition, while for 32,33Na excited states are reported for the first time. From a comparison to state-of-the-art shell model calculations it is concluded that the newly observed excited state in 31Na belongs to a rotational band formed by a 2p2h intruder configuration within the "Island of Inversion"., Accepted for Publication in Phys. Abstract

We report on the first spectroscopic study of the N=22 nucleus 32Ne at the newly completed RIKEN Radioactive Ion Beam Factory. A single gamma-ray line with an energy of 722(9) keV was observed in both inelastic scattering of a 226 MeV/u 32Ne beam on a Carbon target and proton removal from 33Na at 245 MeV/u. This transition is assigned to the de-excitation of the first J^pi = 2+ state in 32Ne to the 0+ ground state. Interpreted through comparison with state-of-the-art shell model calculations, the low excitation energy demonstrates that the Island of Inversion extends to at least N=22 for the Ne isotopes., Accepted for publication in Phys. Abstract

NESTER; Differential cross section of the inelastic scattering of a 54 MeV/u 26Ne beam on a lead target has been measured by detecting the de-excitation $\gamma$-rays. Analysis of the first 2+ state angular distribution of the inelastically scattered nuclei shows that the process cannot be considered as a pure Coulomb excitation, and nuclear contribution must be taken into account. The charge deformation deduced, ¯C 2 = 0.392 ± 0.024, corresponds to a B(E2) = 141 ± 18 e2fm4 in agreement with a N = 16 sub-shell closure.

Abstract

NESTER; The paper reports on the 30,31Na and 33,34Mg proton inelastic scattering reactions studied at intermediate energy. The neutron and proton deformation of the four nuclei have been deduced and found to be strongly correlated by comparing the present (p,p') data with that of previous Coulomb excitation experiments. In the neutron-knockout channel a new state was found in 30Na at 360 keV and the energies of the known gamma-ray transitions have been confirmed in all the four nuclei.

Abstract

This Letter reports on the 1H(28Ne,28Ne) and 1H(28Ne,27Ne) reactions studied at intermediate energy using a liquid hydrogen target. From the cross section populating the first 2+ excited state of 28Ne, and using the previously determined B(E2) value, the neutron quadrupole transition matrix element has been calculated to be Mn=13.8±3.7 fm2. In the neutron knockout reaction, two low-lying excited states were populated in 27Ne. Only one of them can be interpreted by the sd shell model while the additional state may intrude from the fp shell. These experimental observations are consistent with the presence of fp shell configurations at low excitation energy in 27,28Ne nuclei caused by a vanishing N=20 shell gap at Z=10.

The electric quadrupole transition from the first 2+ state to the ground 0+ state in 16C is studied through measurement of the lifetime by a recoil shadow method applied to inelastically scattered radioactive 16C nuclei. Abstract

Raster scanning irradiation has been carried out at a HIMAC new treatment facility in NIRS. In order to reduce the difference between prescribed and delivered dose distribution, the accurate beam-intensity control with a low ripple and the fast beam-on/off switching are strongly required. For this purpose, we have developed a new beam-intensity control system using the RFknockout slow extraction. To keep the beam rate constant, this system controls the transverse RF voltage with the feedback proportional-integral control. As a result of the experimental tests, it was verified that this system can modulate the beam-intensity with a low ripple and can switch the beam-on/off with quick responses.

Abstract

A new treatment facility project, as an extension of the existing HIMAC facility, has been initiated for the further development of carbon-ion therapy in NIRS. The challenge of this project is to realize treatment of a moving target by scanning irradiation. In order to realize this by rescanning with gating within an acceptable irradiation time, the development of a fast scanning system is required. To test the fast rescanning irradiation and to verify the design, a new scanning irradiation system was installed into existing HIMAC experiment course. The beam test of the fast scanning system was successfully carried out. In this paper, the performance of the fast scanning was demonstrated.
