A new optimized quasihelically symmetric configuration is described that has the desir-able properties of improved energetic particle confinement, reduced turbulent transportby 3D shaping, and non-resonant divertor capabilities. The configuration presented in thispaper is explicitly optimized for quasihelical symmetry, energetic particle confinement,neoclassical confinement, and stability near the axis. Post optimization, the configurationwas evaluated for its performance with regard to energetic particle transport, idealmagnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability at various values of plasma pressure, and iontemperature gradient instability induced turbulent transport. The effect of discrete coilson various confinement figures of merit, including energetic particle confinement, aredetermined by generating single-filament coils for the configuration. Preliminary divertoranalysis shows that coils can be created that do not interfere with expansion of thevessel volume near the regions of outgoing heat flux, thus demonstrating the possibilityof operating a non-resonant divertor., Comment: 13 figures, 3 tables

An analytic equilibrium, the Toroidal Bessel Function Model, is used in conjunction with the gyrokinetic code GYRO to investigate the nature of microinstabilities in a reversed field pinch (RFP) plasma. The effect of the normalized electron plasma pressure ({\beta}) on the characteristics of the microinstabilities is studied. A transition between an ion temperature gradient (ITG) driven mode and a microtearing mode as the dominant instability is found to occur at a {\beta} value of approximately 4.5%. Suppression of the ITG mode occurs as in the tokamak, through coupling to shear Alfven waves, with a critical {\beta} for stability higher than its tokamak equivalent due to a shorter parallel connection length. There is a steep dependence of the microtearing growth rate on temperature gradient suggesting high profile stiffness. There is evidence for a collisionless microtearing mode. The wavenumber-frequency spectrum of the two-dimensional Hasegawa-Wakatani model is investigated in the hydrodynamic, intermediate, and adiabatic regimes. A nonlinear frequency and a line width related to energy transfer properties provide a measure of the average frequency and spectral broadening, respectively. In the adiabatic regime, narrow spectra, typical of wave turbulence, are observed with a nonlinear frequency shift in the electron drift direction. In the hydrodynamic regime, broad spectra with almost zero nonlinear frequencies are observed. Nonlinear frequency shifts are shown to be related to nonlinear energy transfer by vorticity advection through the high frequency region of the spectrum. In the intermediate regime, the nonlinear frequency shift for density fluctuations is observed to be weaker than that of electrostatic potential fluctuations. The weaker frequency shift of the density fluctuations is due to nonlinear density advection, which favors energy transfer in the low frequency range. Both the nonlinear frequency and the spectral width increase with poloidal wavenumber ky. In addition, in the adiabatic regime where the nonlinear interactions manifest themselves in the nonlinear frequency shift, the cross-phase between the density and potential fluctuations is observed to match a linear relation, but only if the linear response of the linearly stable eigenmode branch is included. Implications of these numerical observations are discussed.

To study processes involved in a helical structure formation in reversed field pinch devices, the scaling of a turbulent boundary layer width associated with a vortex structure having large shears of magnetic field and flow is obtained for reduced magnetohydrodynamics. The coherent vortex, with its flow and magnetic shears, interacts with Alfvén turbulence, forming a turbulent boundary layer at the edge of the vortex. The layer arises from the balance between turbulence diffusion rates and shearing rates and suppresses the turbulence in the structure. The suppression of turbulence impedes relaxation of the coherent vortex profiles, leading to long coherence times. The scaling of the boundary layer width reveals that both magnetic shear and flow shear can effectively suppress magnetic turbulence.
