Recently discovered, ocean submesoscales have attracted considerable attention due to their ability to change the upper ocean stratification, affect vertical transport, and induce a downscale cascade of energy toward dissipation. Here, we highlight the effect of submesoscale fronts and filaments on surface layer properties and dynamics during storm events, extending previous idealized simulations toward real-ocean applications. We use the Baltic Sea as a natural laboratory to study the rich submesoscale activity of this system with the help of realistic high-resolution numerical simulations. These simulations reveal a wealth of cold submesoscale filaments characterized by sharp lateral buoyancy gradients, strong surface convergence, and high vertical velocities. We show that highly heterogeneous Mixed Layer Depth (MLD) modulations are associated with these features, maintaining locally reduced MLDs even during storm events due to vigorous submesoscale restratification. The interaction of near-surface turbulence and submesoscale restratification results in strong and highly efficient mixing inside the submesoscale fronts.&nbsp, The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

Semi-enclosed marginal seas like the Baltic Sea are often characterized by permanently anoxic deep layers, and may therefore serve as important model systems to study the causes and consequences of the predicted global expansion of oxygen minimum zones. Here, we focus on the role and potential of physical transport processes in ventilating the deep anoxic bottom water of the central Baltic Sea. Based on long-term deployments of an autonomous profiling system in the central Baltic Sea, we show that small scale oxic mid-water intrusions, that are advectively transported, are ubiquitous features, providing an important oxygen source. The turbulent transport of oxygen was measured by a novel combination of fast optodes with shear microstructure data and show strongly increased transport rates during the autumn and winter months as well as a confinement to the basin boundaries, caused by boundary mixing. On the long-term average, mid-water intrusions were shown to inject about 15 Gmol of oxygen per year into the deep-water region below the permanent halocline, turbulent mixing contributes with about 23 Gmol. This is about one order of magnitude larger than the average amount of oxygen imported during the massive deep-water inflow events (Major Baltic Inflows) that occur on an approximately decadal time scale. These results emphasize that a precise understanding of the oxygen transport pathways is fundamental for a projection of the state of the Baltic Sea in a changing climate., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

Basierend auf den meteorologischen Verhältnissen werden die horizontalen und vertikalen Verteilungsmuster von Temperatur, Salzgehalt, Sauerstoff/ Schwefelwasserstoff und Nährstoffen mit saisonaler Auflösung dargestellt. Für den südlichen Ostseeraum ergab sich eine Kältesumme der Lufttemperatur an der Station Warnemünde von 31,7 Kd. Im Vergleich belegt der Winter 2016/17 den 15. Platz der wärmsten Winter seit Beginn der Aufzeichnungen im Jahr 1948 und wird als mild klassifiziert. Mit einer Wärmesumme von 159,5 Kd rangiert der Sommer im Mittelfeld der 70jährigen Datenreihe und reiht sich auf Platz 28 der wärmsten Sommer ein. Das Langzeitmittel liegt bei 153,4 Kd. Auf der Grundlage von satellitengestützten Meeresoberflächentemperaturen (SST) war 2017 das elft- wärmste Jahr seit 1990 und mit 0,24 K etwas über dem langfristigen SST-Mittel. März, April und Oktober - Dezember trugen durch ihre positiven Anomalien zum Durchschnitt bei. Juli und August waren durch negative Anomalien gekennzeichnet. Die Anomalien erreichten Höchstwerte von +2 K und -3 K. Die Situation in den Tiefenbecken der Ostsee war im Wesentlichen geprägt durch bodennah einsetzende Stagnation im östlichen Gotland Becken und Belüftung der mittleren Wassersäule oberhalb 150 m im Zuge kleinerer Einströme. Zu Jahresbeginn wurde das im nördlichen Zentralbecken gelegene Farö Tief erstmals innerhalb der aktuellen Einstromphase belüftet. Im Jahresverlauf 2017 wurden zwei weitere schwache Einströme mit Volumina zwischen 210 km³ und 188 km³ im Februar sowie Oktober registriert. Zusammenfassend kann gesagt werden, dass die Auswirkungen der seit 2014 beobachten Phase von verstärkten Wasseraustauschprozessen mit entsprechenden Konsequenzen für die biogeochemischen Kreisläufe abklingen., The article summarizes the hydrographic-hydrochemical conditions in the western and central Baltic Sea in 2017. The anomalies reached maximum values of +2 K and -3 K. The situation in the deep basins of the Baltic Sea was mainly coined by beginning stagnation at bottom-near water depths of the eastern Gotland Basin and ongoing ventilation of the upper part 5 of the deep-water above 150 m as a consequence of weak inflows. For the first time within this phase of intensified inflow activity, starting in 2014, the ventilation of the Farö Deep at the Northern Central Basin was registered at the beginning of the year. In the course of 2017 two weak inflows showing total volumes of 210 km³ (February) and 188 km³ (October) were registered. In conclusion, the impact of the observed phase of intensified water exchange processes with subsequent consequences for the biogeochemical cycles is weakening.

The summer “heat sum” of 267 Kd is ranked in the “top ten” over the past 69 years and ranks on place 6 of the warmest summers. The situation in the deep basins of the Baltic Sea was mainly coined by ongoing inflow activity of moderate Major Baltic Inflows (November 2015, January-February 2016) following the Major Baltic Inflow of December 2014, which was the third largest ever observed. Since mid of January, the deep layer in the eastern Gotland Basin was ventilated again. The November 2015 MBI reached the bottom, whereas the following event only water depths between 100-200 m had ventilated. In 2016, furthermore three smaller inflow events with estimated volumes between 171 km³ and 184 km³ occurred in the timespan October to December. Seit Mitte Januar wurde das östliche Gotland Becken erneut belüftet. Während der MBI November 2015 erneut den Boden erreichte, wurden vom nachfolgenden Ereignis nur Wassertiefen zwischen 100-200 m belüftet. Im Jahr 2016 wurden drei weitere kleinere Einströme mit Volumina zwischen 171 km³ und 184 km³ im Zeitraum Oktober bis Dezember registriert. Zusammenfassend kann gesagt werden, dass die seit 2014 beobachte Phase von verstärkten Wasseraustauschprozessen mit entsprechendenKonsequenzen für die biogeochemischen Kreisläufe weiterhin andauert.

The expedition MSM050 K��NO INTERFACE (Coastal benthic environments in North and Baltic Sea: Evaluation of processes and transports at the sediment-water interface) was a joint activity of the BMBF-funded projects NOAH and SECOS to increase the understanding of biogeochemical, biological and physical processes along the sediment-water interface in the North and Baltic Sea. The core program of the cruise was dedicated to the completion of seasonal data in these regions, with the main focus on the determination of biogeochemical functions, their control mechanism for the relevant benthic habitat types and turbulence measurements of near bottom water layers as well as accumulation of organic pollutants, heavy metals in the sediments. At five NOAH stations in the North Sea, sediment samples were taken by MUC and van Veen grab, along with CTD measurements and the use of the IOW benthic chamber lander and dredge. During the passage of Skagerrak and Kattegat, in addition to the classical oceanographic examination, benthic fauna samples were taken at 19 stations for comparison with historical data. During the passage, a ship-bound current meter recorded physical effects on the turbulence of finest sediment particles by mini-turbulences. In the Baltic Sea, five SECOS stations were investigated for geological, biological and biogeochemical analysis of sediments by using moorings. The summer “heat sum” of 182.3 Kd is in the upper midrange over the past 68 years and ranks on place 21 of the warmest summers. The situation in the deep basins of the Baltic Sea was mainly coined by the Major Baltic Inflow of December 2014 which was the third largest ever observed. In May 2015, the layer between 140 m and the bottom in the eastern Gotland Basin was completely ventilated. In 2015, inflow events with estimated volumes between 141 and 270 km³ occurred on five occasions. Im Mai 2015 war die gesamte Wasserschicht im östlichen Gotlandbecken zwischen 140 m und dem Boden belüftet. Im Jahr 2015 wurden fünf weitere Einströme mit Volumina zwischen 141 und 270 km³ registriert. Zusammenfassend kann gesagt werden, dass in den letzten beiden Jahren verstärkt Wasseraustauschprozesse beobachtet wurden. This report is based on preliminary data. Ventspils (Latvia). 01-02 March 2015 and 07-09 March 2015 Purpose of the cruise The original scientific goal of this cruise, conducted in the framework of the WGL/Pakt project ILWAO-II, was the investigation of the role of internal waves for basin-scale vertical mixing in the deep basins of the Baltic Sea. In agreement with IOW’s board, however, it was decided to devote a substantial part of the cruise time to the observation of one of the rare major saline inflow events that reached the central Baltic Sea exactly at the time of this cruise. In addition to the physical measurements, microbiological and chemical investigations were conducted, focusing on the role of methane-oxidizing bacteria in pelagic redoxclines.

Meereswissenschaftliche Berichte No 96 2015 - Marine Science Reports No 96 2015, The winter of 2013/14 in the southern Baltic Sea area was a mild one, with a cold sum at Warnemünde of 65.8 Kd, a value that falls well short of the long-term average of 104.5 Kd. The winter of 2013/14 is thus the twenty-seventh warmest winter since the comparative record began in 1948. This cold sum was due exclusively to the month of February; all other months had a cold sum of 0 Kd. The coldest winter in the observation series was that of 1962/63 with a cold sum of 395.2 Kd. With a warm sum of 236.9 Kd, recorded at Warnemünde, 2014 comes in tenth place in the time series that began in 1948, forcing 2013’s value of 230.4 Kd into eleventh place. The 2014 value far exceeds the long-term average of 150 K d, and exceeds the standard deviation. 2014 can therefore again be classed as a particularly warm year, even if average monthly temperatures in June and August were slightly below the long-term average, and April and October were balanced. In comparison, May, July and September present warm sums that are twice as high; they are exceptionally warm months that come eighth, fourth, and sixth respectively in the time series since 1948. In terms of Sea Surface Temperature, 2014 was the warmest year since 1990, and was about 1.2 K above average for 1990-2014; it was 0.4 K higher than 2008, formerly the warmest year. Except for February and June, all other months, and especially July and August in the north of the Baltic Sea, contributed to that value. The western Baltic Sea exceeded long-term mean values by +1 to +3 K in every month except February. After a mild start to the year, a cold spell starting around 20 January produced strong cooling until the beginning of February. Nevertheless, the monthly average for January exceeded the long-term averages for 1990-2014 by +2 K; January was the second-warmest month in the western Baltic since 2007. February lay in the range of long-term averages, and in the Arkona Sea and Gulf of Bothnia was the coldest month of the year. As usual, March developed into the coldest month of the year in the Gotland Sea. From March to May throughout the Baltic Sea, and even from March to December in its western section, anomalies of +1 to +3 K were recorded. Inflow events with estimated volumes between 100 and 400 km³ occurred in the Baltic Sea on four occasions in 2014. In February, an inflow volume of 141 km³ was calculated based on changes in sea level at Landsort Norra. After a brief outflow phase, another inflow occurred in March with an estimated volume of 203 km³. In combination with the earlier effects of hurricane ‘Xaver’ in December 2013 (inflow volume of 147 km³) and the long phase of westerly winds from the end of October to the beginning of November 2013, both these events produced a complex interaction that resulted in water spilling over Stolpe Channel in late April / early May. These water masses reached the Gotland Deep in late May and oxygenated its deep water for the first time since 2003. Although none of these three events fulfilled the typical characteristics of a Major Baltic Inflow, combined they imported comparably large amounts of water, salt, and oxygen into the deep water of the Baltic Sea (a novel form of deep-water ventilation that was described for the first time). In August, another inflow phase with a volume of some 164 km³ was detected. In terms of ventilation of the deep basins, its effects were more restricted to the Arkona Basin and the Bornholm Basin. A very large inflow began on 13 December; it had a volume of 358 km³, of which 198 km³ was saline water bearing around 4 Gt salt. According to latest estimates, this event represents the third-largest salt-water inflow into the Baltic Sea since the beginning of the record in 1880. The annual cycle of oxygen saturation in the surface water was again typical in 2014. As a result of the dominance of oxygen-consuming processes and low productivity, the surface water in February in all sea areas was slightly undersaturated at 95 % to 96 %. In March, too, undersaturation continued to be observed in all sea areas except the Arkona Basin where saturation levels were 104.3 %. The peak of the 2014 spring bloom occurred in all sea areas in May: in the Bornholm Basin and in the eastern Gotland Basin, saturation values between 120 % and 125 % were determined. Summer presented a familiar picture with saturation values around 105 %. Only in the eastern Gotland Basin did saturation values around 115 % indicate an intensive cyanobacteria bloom. In the autumn, intensified degradation processes again led to undersaturation. Overall it can be concluded that the annual range of variation for saturation was relatively small, as in previous years. This indicates a healthy oxygen balance in the surface water. Oxygen conditions in the deep water of the basins of the central Baltic Sea are primarily influenced by the occurrence or absence of strong barotropic and/or baroclinic inflows. The Bornholm Basin is the westernmost of the deep basins, and inflows are often able to ventilate its deep water. As described above, the inflow events of autumn 2013, and February and March 2014 led in the spring to a lasting improvement in oxygen conditions in the deep water of the Bornholm Basin, where at the end of April 5.65 ml/l oxygen was measured. Once these water masses had spilled over Stolpe Sill, they advanced into the Gotland Basin whose deep water they repeatedly - if briefly - ventilated for the first time since 2003. At the same time, this meant that towards the end of the year relatively low concentrations of hydrogen sulphide were measured in the eastern Gotland Basin. Usually at the end of a long period of stagnation, values between− 5 ml/l and −7 ml/l are found, as was the case at the beginning of the year. By the end of 2014, therefore, favourable conditions had developed for the Major Baltic Inflow in December. Oxygen conditions in the deep water were also reflected in nutrient concentrations. The summer ‛heat sum“ of 230.4 K d was well above the long-term mean of 148.8 K d and ranks on place 10 of the warmest summers. In 2013, inflow events with estimated volumes between 100 and 300 km3 took place four times: in December 2012/January 2013 (157 km3), in January/February (195 km3); both of barotropic type. A more baroclinic inflow in March April brought 160 km3 into the Baltic. In November/December several phases of westerly winds imported around 200 km3. Einstromereignisse mit geschätzten Volumina zwischen 100 und 300 km³ fanden in der Ostsee 2013 vier Mal statt. Von Ende Dezember 2012 bis Anfang Januar 2013 konnte ein Einstromvolumen von 157 km3 errechnet werden. Ein weiterer Einstrom mit einem geschätzten Volumen von 195 km3 schloss sich vom 28.01. bis 7.02. an. Beide Ereignisse können als barotrop bewertet werden. Eine eher barokline Phase erstreckt sich über einen Zeitraum von 32 Tagen vom 26.03. bis 27.04. mit rund 160 km3 Wasservolumen. Zusätzlich ist ab Ende Oktober ein weiterer barotroper Zustrom erkennbar. Vom 22.10. bis 7.11. gelangen durch eine Aneinanderreihung kürzer Phasen von starkem Westwind etwa 200 km³ Wasser in die Ostsee. Die Einströme erreichten aber nicht die zentrale Gotlandsee, wo die Stagnationsperiode unvermindert anhielt.

After the moderate to severe winters 2009/10 and 2010/11, the ice winter in the Baltic Sea was only moderate. With the “cold sum” of the air temperature in Warnemünde of 88.9 K d 2011/12 ranks on place 27 of the coldest winters since the beginning of the record in 1948, but remained below the long-term mean of 105.2 K d. The summer “heat sum” of 147 K d differs only marginally from the average of 149 K d since 1948. In 2012, barotropic inflow events with estimated volumes between 100 and 300 km3 took place three times: in February/March, in August/ September and in December/January. The relatively strong inflow signal of November/December 2011 was registered in the Bornholm Basin only in February 2012. With an estimated input of one billion tons (1 Gt) of salts, the inflow can be characterized as a small Major Baltic Inflow (MBI). The transported oxygen amounted to more than 450 oo0 t. The inflow was strong enough to reach the southern Baltic Sea and the Gdansk Bight in spring 2012. Barotrope Einstromereignisse mit geschätzten Volumina zwischen 100 und 300 km³ fanden in der Ostsee 2012 drei Mal statt, im Februar/März, im August/September und im Dezember/Januar. Das relativ starke Einstromsignal von November/Dezember 2011 wurde erst im Februar 2012 in Bornholmbecken quantifiziert. Es konnte eine importierte Salzmenge von 1 Gt abgeschätzt werden, womit der Einstrom als kleiner MBI (Major Baltic Inflow) zu klassifizieren ist. Die eingeströmte Sauerstoffmenge kann auf über 450 000 t geschätzt werden. Based on meteorological conditions, the horizontal and vertical distribution of temperature, salinity, oxygen/hydrogen sulphide and inorganic and organic nutrients are described on a seasonal scale. The moderate to severe, long and cold winter 2009/2010 was immediately followed by a similarly strong winter 2010/2011. With the “cold sum” of the air temperature in Warnemünde of 177.7 K d it ranks on place 13 of the coldest winters since the beginning of the record in 1948. The summer “heat sum” 2011 in Warnemünde of 174.5 K d was lower than in the years before and was lying only slightly above the average of 148 K d. The satellite derived sea surface temperature of the entire Baltic Sea reached place 7 of the warmest years since 1990. In 2011, barotropic inflow events with estimated volumes between 100 and 300 km3 took place four times: in January/February, in March/April, in May and in November/December. The relatively strong inflow signal of November/December 2011 transported about one billion tons (1 Gt) of salt into the Baltic Sea; it remains clearly behind the Major Baltic Inflows in the winter of 2003 (2.0 Gt) and the winter of 1993 (3.4 Gt). Subsequent effects can be documented only in 2012. In the deep water of the eastern and western Gotland Basin, the stagnation period was continuing undiminished. Nitrate was detected in 2005 for the last time. Barotrope Einstromereignisse mit geschätzten Volumina zwischen 100 und 300 km³ fanden in der Ostsee 2011 vier Mal statt, im Januar/Februar, im März/April, im Mai und im November/Dezember. Das relativ starke Einstromsignal von November/Dezember 2011 transportierte etwa eine Milliarde Tonnen (1 Gt) Salz in die Ostsee und bleibt damit deutlich hinter den letzten großen Salzwassereinbrüchen in den Wintern 2003 (2,0 Gt) und 1993 (3,4 Gt) zurück. Die Auswirkungen können erst im Jahr 2012 dokumentiert werden. Im Tiefenwasser des östlichen und westlichen Gotlandbeckens hielt die Stagnationsperiode unvermindert an. Nitrat konnte dort letztmalig im Jahr 2005 nachgewiesen werden. Ammonium- und Phosphatwerte stabilisierten sich auf dem Niveau des Vorjahres und sind vergleichbar mit den Konzentrationen, die am Ende der letzten langen Stagnationsphase 2002 gemessen wurden.

Based on meteorological conditions, the horizontal and vertical distribution of temperature, salinity, oxygen/hydrogen sulphide and inorganic nutrients are described on a seasonal scale. The year was characterized by a long and cold winter 2009/2010 and a warm summer which is also reflected in the surface water temperature. In 2010, barotropic inflow events with estimated volumes between 100 and 200 km3 took place five times: in January/February, in July, in September, in October/November and in December. However, they were not able to ventilate the deeper basins of the Baltic Sea. The barotropic inflow of November/December 2009 was only able to oxygenate the Bornholm Basin and could be detected within the halocline of the eastern Gotland Basin in March 2010. In the deep water of the eastern and northern Gotland Basin, the stagnation period is continuing undiminishedly. Compared with the end of the previous long stagnation period in 2002, the 2010 ammonium concentrations of the Gotland and Farö Deeps are reached again or even exceeded. Vergleicht man die Ammoniumwerte des Gotland- und Farötiefs im Jahr 2010 mit denen des Jahres 2002, dem Ende der letzten Stagnationsperiode, so sind diese wieder erreicht oder bereits überschritten. Auch die Phosphatkonzentrationen liegen in der gleichen Größenordnung.

Based on the meteorological conditions, the horizontal and vertical distribution of temperature, salinity, oxygen/hydrogen sulphide, inorganic and organic nutrients are described on a seasonal scale. In Warnemünde, the year 2009 was too warm on average and continued the series of positive anomalies. This is also reflected in the water temperature. All in all, the year 2009 was, after the last four years, the fifth warmest in the investigation period since 1990. In 2009, two larger barotropic inflow events were observed, in September/October and in November. The last one could be seen in the Bornholm Basin only in January 2010. Whereasthe deep water of the Bornholm Basin remained oxic throughout the whole year, the stagnation period in the Gotland Basin was intensified. Regional and temporal increase of concentrations was observed at the station OB Boje in the Pomeranian Bay, reflecting the higher trace metal input by the Odra river. Short-term changes induced during the main saltwater inflow event in February 2003 were only reflected in the trends “Below Halocline” for Cddiss, Cudiss, and Zndiss. Elevated Pbdiss levels in the Western Baltic are possibly a result of sample contamination. Stagnant conditions with anoxia and decreasing dissolved trace metal conditions below the oxicanoxic interface were noticed in the near bottom layer of the Bornholm Basin at 80 m depth, below ~140 m in the Gotland Deep and below 100 m in the Landsort Deep. For the contents of CdSPM, CuSPM and ZnSPM an increase was observed with depth in the central Baltic, a hint for the stabilisation of the stagnation period. Altogether the saltwater inflow event in 2003 had influenced the trace metal long term trends in the deepwater of the central Baltic Sea. Now there is another chance to study changes in trace metal concentrations during the stabilisation of an anoxic deep water body as well as the “feedback mechanism” on the trace metal concentrations in the surface water body. Heavy metal concentrations in surface sediments of the BLMP-stations measured in 2009 fit in and complete the time series of now 12 years (1998 to 2009). But, a statistically safe trend of the elements (heavy metals) at the different stations can still not be established. Hot spots of contamination are besides the well known historical dumping site in the Lübeck-Bay (no more in the programme) the western Arkona-Basin and the Pommeranian Bay in front of the Oder River estuary., Die Schwermetall-Situation in der Ostsee im Jahre 2009 Im Jahre 2009 wurden wie im Vorjahr die Stationen in der westlichen Ostsee berücksichtigt, allerdings wurden diese Stationen im Februar und im Juli beprobt. Zum Vorjahr wies die Schwermetallverteilung in der westlichen Ostsee im Jahr 2009 keine deutlichen oder gesundheitsgefährdenden Veränderungen auf. Regionale Konzentrationserhöhungen wie sie z. B. an der Station OB Boje in der Pommerschen Bucht auftreten, sind auf die Einträge mit der Oder zurückzuführen. Veränderungen, die kurzzeitig durch den Salzwassereinbruch im Februar 2003 hervorgerufen wurden, spiegeln sich in den Langzeittrends kaum wieder. Unterhalb der Redoxklinen die 2009 im 100-110m Tiefenhorizont angetroffen wurde, wurde ein Rückgang der gelösten Metallkonzentrationen für Cddiss, Cudiss und Zndiss beobachtet. Weiterhin ist eine starke Zunahme der CdSPM, CuSPM und ZnSPM mit der Tiefe zu verzeichnen, welches auf die Stabilisierung einer weiteren Stagnationsperiode schließen lässt. Insgesamt gesehen hatte der Salzwassereinbruch 2003 vor allem einen Einfluss auf die Langzeittrends der Metallkonzentrationen im Tiefenwasser der zentralen Ostsee. Insofern bietet sich jetzt ähnlich wie 1995 die außergewöhnliche Chance, die Veränderung der Metallkonzentrationen während der Stabilisierung des anoxischen Tiefenwasserkörpers, sowie deren Rückkopplungsmechanismus auf das Oberflächenwasser während einer weiteren Stagnationsperiode zu beobachten. Regionale Konzentrationserhöhungen wie sie z. B. in den letzten 2 Jahren an der Station Oderboje / Marnet zu beobachten sind, werden auf die Einträge durch die Oder zurückgeführt, die entsprechend der vorherrschenden Windrichtung, beeinflusst wird. Vergleichbar den Quecksilberkonzentrationen im Sediment, wurden an dieser Station auch im Wasser die höchsten Konzentrationen beobachtet. Die im Jahr 2009 gemessenen Schwermetallkonzentrationen in den Oberflächensedimenten der BLMP-Stationen komplettieren die nun vorliegende Zeitreihe von 12 Jahren (1998 bis 2009). Ein statistisch gesicherter zeitlicher Trend für die einzelnen Stationen und Elemente kann immer noch nicht festgestellt werden. Schwerpunkte der „Belastung“ sind neben der bekannten Lokalität „Altlast Lübecker Bucht“ (nicht mehr im Messprogramm), das westliche Arkonabecken und die Pommernbucht vor der Odermündung.

Based on the meteorological situation, the horizontal and vertical distribution of temperature, salinity, oxygen/ hydrogen sulphide, inorganic and organic nutrients are described on a seasonal scale. In Warnemünde, the year 2008 was too warm on average and continued the series of positive anomalies whereby the warmer winter was more pronounced than the summer. This is mirrored also in extremely high sea surface temperatures during the first half of the year. The maximum ice cover of the Baltic Sea of 49 000 km² was the smallest one since recording started in 1720. In 2008, five minor barotropic inflow events into the Baltic Sea with approximately 200 km³ took place: in January, February/March, June, September/October and November. These barotropic events as well as four baroclinic inflows in January, May, August and September reached the central Baltic Sea only partly in the form of single pulses and with different features. The near-bottom layer from the Bornholm Basin to the Gdansk Deep was ventilated again. In contrast, conditions in the eastern and western Gotland Basin were coined by the lasting stagnation period. In the deep water of the Gotland and Landsort Deep the highest hydrogen sulphide concentrations of the stagnation period which started in 2005 were measured. As a result, phosphate and ammonium concentrations in both deeps as well as in the Farö Deep were highest for the last five years., Hydrographisch-chemische Zustandseinschätzung der Ostsee 2008: Die Arbeit beschreibt die hydrographisch-hydrochemischen Bedingungen in der westlichen und zentralen Ostsee für das Jahr 2008. Das Jahr 2008 war in Warnemünde im Mittel sehr warm und setzte die jüngste Folge von positiven Anomalien fort, wobei der zu warme Winter ausgeprägter war als der Sommer. Dies spiegelte sich auch in den sehr hohen Wasseroberflächentemperaturen des 1. Halbjahres wider. Mit der maximalen Eisbedeckung der Ostsee von 49 000 km² wurde der niedrigste Wert seit Beginn der Aufzeichnungen im Jahr 1720 erreicht. 2008 fanden fünf kleinere barotrope Einstromereignisse mit geschätzten Volumen um 200 km³ statt: Januar, Februar/März, Juni, September/Oktober und November. Diese barotropen sowie vier barokline Einströme im Januar, Mai, August und September erreichten nur zum Teil in einzelnen Schüben und mit unterschiedlichen Eigenschaften die zentrale Ostsee. Dabei wurde 2008 die bodennahe Schicht im Raum vom Bornholmbecken bis zum Danziger Tief erneut belüftet. Die Verhältnisse im östlichen und westlichen Gotlandbecken waren dagegen nach wie vor von der anhaltenden Stagnationsperiode bestimmt. Im Tiefenwasser des Gotlandtiefs und des Landsorttiefs wurden die höchsten Schwefelwasserstoffkonzentrationen der seit 2005 andauernden Stagnationsperiode gemessen. Im Ergebnis wurden im Tiefenwasser der beiden Tiefs wie auch im Farötief die höchsten Phosphat- und Ammoniumkonzentrationen der letzten fünf Jahre gemessen., Die Schwermetall-Situation in der Ostsee im Jahre 2008: In general the 2008 results of heavy metal concentrations in the Baltic Sea revealed no pronounced changes compared to previous years. During sample filtration only particles 0.4μm passed the filter. Short-term changes induced during the main saltwater inflow event in February 2003 were only reflected in the trends “Below Halocline” for Cddiss, Cudiss, and Zndiss. Besides the known historical dumping sites of industrial waste material from the 1960th in the Lübeck Bay (2008 not in the measurement program), higher concentrations of heavy metals (especially for Hg) in the western Arkona Basin and the southern Pommeranian Bay (Oder River mouth) are remarkable. The Arkona Basin “hot spot” is a historical dumping place as well (military material from World War II times), and the Pommeranian Bay is influenced by heavy metal rich suspended sediments from the Oder Lagoon, which arrives the Baltic Sea in this area., Die Schwermetall-Situation in der Ostsee im Jahre 2008: Wie in den Vorjahren wies die Schwermetallverteilung im Ostseewasser im Jahr 2008 keine deutlichen oder gesundheitsgefährdenden Veränderungen auf. Regionale Konzentrationserhöhungen wie sie z. B. in den letzten Jahren immer wieder in der westlichen Ostsee zu beobachten sind und in 2006 für die gelösten Kupferkonzentrationen beobachtet wurden, werden auf eine windinduzierte, bodennahe Durchmischung und den damit verbundenen sehr variablen Schwebstoffanteil in der Wassersäule zurückgeführt. Durch die Filtration der Proben werden Partikel >0,4μm zurückgehalten, während Partikel < 0,4μm das Filter passieren. Veränderungen, die kurzzeitig durch den Salzwassereinbruch im Februar 2003 hervorgerufen wurden, spiegeln sich in den Langzeittrends kaum wieder. Unterhalb der Redoxklinen die 2008 im 120-130m Tiefenhorizont angetroffen wurde, wurde ein Rückgang der gelösten Metallkonzentrationen für Cddiss, Cudiss und Zndiss beobachtet. Weiterhin ist eine leichte Zunahme der CdSPM, CuSPM und ZnSPM mit der Tiefe zu verzeichnen, welches auf die Stabilisierung einer weiteren Stagnationsperiode schließen lässt. Insgesamt gesehen hatte der Salzwassereinbruch 2003 vor allem einen Einfluss auf die Langzeittrends der Metallkonzentrationen im Tiefenwasser der zentralen Ostsee. Insofern bietet sich jetzt ähnlich wie 1995 die außergewöhnliche Chance, die Veränderung der Metallkonzentrationen während der Stabilisierung des anoxischen Tiefenwasserkörpers, sowie deren Rückkopplungsmechanismus auf das Oberflächenwasser während einer weiteren Stagnationsperiode zu beobachten. Im Rahmen einer Diplomarbeit „Methodenoptimierung zur Anreicherung von Spurenmetallen aus Meerwasser -Vergleichende Untersuchungen zwischen Flüssig-flüssig und Flüssig-Festphasen Extraktion im Meerwasser mit variablen Salz- und Sauerstoffverhältnissen-“ wurde eine Flüssig –Festphasen Extraktionsmethode optimiert, und statistisch ausgewertet. Die Schwermetallkonzentrationen in den Oberflächensedimenten der BLMP-Stationen variieren innerhalb der bekannten Grenzen und unterscheiden sich für die untersuchten Regionen. Bisher kann jedoch noch kein gesicherter zeitlicher Trend für die einzelnen Stationen festgestellt werden (1998 bis 2008). Neben der bekannten Lokalität „Altlast Lübecker Bucht“, die 2008 nicht im Messprogramm enthalten war, fallen insbesondere die höheren Hg-Gehalte im westlichen Arkonabecken und vor der Odermündung auf. Beim Arkonabecken handelt es sich ebenfalls um ein „Altlasten-Problem“. Bei der Odermündung ist zu beachten, dass die hohen Schwermetallbelastungen im Sediment des Oderhaffs durch Resuspension und Austrag in die vorgelagerte Ostsee auf die Konzentrationen der Feinfraktion in der Pommernbucht „ausstrahlen“.

This meeting is organised by the Baltic Sea Research Institute at Warnemünde, Germany on a biannual basis (see http://www.io-warnemuende.de/phy/wtd). Its aim is to provide a discussion forum for experts interested in aquatic turbulence research with short presentations and ample opportunities to exchange ideas in a relaxed environment., The topic for the 2005 meeting was "Impact of small-scale physics on marine biology". Hydrodynamics and marine life interact at several scales. Vertical mixing interacts with the distribution of particles and the nutrient and light fields that plankton experiences in the water column determining its population dynamics. Small-scale turbulence seems to increase the flux of nutrients towards diffusion-limited cells, to promote the encounter rate of prey particles with their predators and to interfere with the physiology of some planktonic organisms, such as dinoflagellates. Turbulence also interacts with suspended particles by aggregating and disaggregating particulate organic matter with important consequences for the export flux of organic matter to deep waters. Benthic organisms may modify the hydrodynamic regime around them with structures that modify the boundary layer and consequences for their feeding and growth. These are just a few paintbrushes of interactions between hydrodynamics and plankton subject to ongoing research. This topic is growingly important for solving societal problems such as fisheries sustainability, harmful algal blooms, coastal eutrophication and climate change impacts. Consequently, it is included in a range of international programs: IMBER (http://www.imber.info), LOICZ (http://www.loicz.org), GOOS (http://www.iocgoos.org), GEOHAB (http://www.jhu.edu/scor/GEOHABfront.htm) and GLOBEC (http://www.globec.org), to name just a few., The meeting was organised in six plenary sessions: 1. Advanced instrumentation; 2. Small-scale turbulence: field studies and modelling; 3. The impact of turbulence on plankton; 4. Particle interaction and behaviour; 5. Stochastic model studies; and 6. The impact of turbulence on the ecosystem. The meeting was attended by 40 plus researchers from 12 different countries. Additionally, effects of baroclinic inflows from summer 2006 could be seen. Especially the near-bottom layer region from the Bornholm Basin to the Gdansk Deep was ventilated repeatedly. The different inflow events could only shortly improve the oxygen situation in the eastern Gotland Basin. At the end of 2007 the water column of the Gotland Deep between 137 m and the bottom (239 m) was completely anoxic. The annual mean for phosphate at 200 m water depth of 4.03 μmol/l was in the same range as in 2006, nitrate was not existent under anoxic conditions and ammonium concentrations increased further from 1.7 μmol/l (2005) over 9.2 μmol/l (2006) to 11.1 μmol/l in 2007. In the western Gotland Basin the stagnation period prevailed throughout the whole year. Noteworthy are also the high phosphate winter concentrations in all sea areas. Together with relatively low winter nitrate concentrations a shift took place in the N:P-ratio. In general, N:P-ratios in the mixed winter surface layer are far away from the classical Redfield ratio of 16:1. Over a longer period of time, a stable N:P- ratio of 7:1 - 9:1 had been established. In the last five years, a remarkable decrease was observed. In 2007, the N:P ratio ranged between 4.3:1 in the Bornholm Basin and 6.6:1 in the Landsort Deep area., Hydrographisch-chemische Zustandseinschätzung der Ostsee 2007: Die Arbeit beschreibt die hydrographisch-hydrochemischen Bedingungen in der westlichen und zentralen Ostsee fur das Jahr 2007. Basierend auf den meteorologischen Verhaltnissen werden die horizontalen und vertikalen Verteilungsmuster von Temperatur, Salzgehalt, Sauerstoff/Schwefelwasserstoff sowie der anorganischen und organischen Nahrstoffe mit saisonaler Auflösung dargestellt. 2007 fanden drei barotrope Einstromereignisse mit geschätzten Volumen um 200 km³ in der Ostsee statt: Ende Januar, Anfang Marz und Anfang November, zwei weitere mit jeweils weniger als 150 km³ Volumen im Juni/Juli und im August/September. Zusätzlich konnten die Effekte barokliner Einströme vom Sommer 2006 beobachtet werden. Insbesondere wurde 2007 die bodennahe Schicht im Raum vom Bornholmbecken bis zum Danziger Tief mehrfach belüftet. Im östlichen Gotlandbecken konnten die verschiedenen Einströme die Sauerstoffsituation nur kurzzeitig beeinflussen. Ende 2007 war im Bereich des Gotlandtiefs die Wassersäule zwischen 137 m und dem Boden (239 m) anoxisch. Der Jahresmittelwert fur Phosphat in 200 m Wassertiefe von 4,03 µmol/l lag nur wenig unter dem des Vorjahres, Nitrat war unter den anoxischen Bedingungen nicht vorhanden, die Ammoniumkonzentrationen stiegen allmählich an. Sie erhöhten sich von 1,7 µmol/l (2005) uber 9,2 µmol/l (2006) auf 11,1 µmol/l im Jahr 2007. Im westlichen Gotlandbecken hielt die Stagnationsperiode durchgängig an. Beachtenswert sind ausserdem die hohen Winterphosphatkonzentrationen in allen Seegebieten. Verbunden mit niedrigen Winternitratkonzentrationen führt dies zu Verschiebungen des N:PVerhältnisses. Generell sind die N:P - Verhältnisse in der winterlichen Oberflächenschicht weit entfernt vom klassischen Redfield- Verhältnis von 16:1. Uber längere Zeiträume wurde ein recht stabiles N:P - Verhältnis von 7-9:1 ermittelt. In den letzten 5 Jahren kam es zu einer deutlichen Abnahme der N:P - Verhältnisse. Im Jahr 2007 wurden Werte zwischen 4,3:1 im Bornholmbecken und 6,6:1 im Bereich des Landsorttiefs ermittelt., Die Schwermetallsituation in der Ostsee im Jahre 2007: In general the 2007 results of heavy metal concentrations in the Baltic Sea revealed no pronounced changes compared to previous years. Regional and temporal limited variations as observed in 2006 for Cudiss, which have been observed periodically in the western Baltic also for the other metals, have been attributed to the changing enrichment of suspended matter in the water column, released by wind induced mixing up to the ground level. During sample filtration only particles 0.4μm passed the filter. Short-term changes induced during the main saltwater inflow event in February 2003 were only reflected in the trends “Below Halocline” for Cddiss, Cudiss, and Zndiss. Elevated Pbdiss levels in the Western Baltic are possibly a result of sample contamination. Stagnant conditions with anoxia and decreasing dissolved trace metal conditions below the oxic-anoxic interface were noticed in the near bottom layer of the Bornholm Basin at 80 m depth, below ~140 m in the Gotland Deep and below 100 m in the Landsort Deep. For the contents of CdSPM, CuSPM and ZnSPM an increase was observed with depth in the central Baltic, a hint for the stabilisation of the stagnation period. Altogether the saltwater inflow event in 2003 had influenced the trace metal long term trends in the deepwater of the central Baltic Sea. Now there is another chance to study changes in trace metal concentrations during the stabilisation of an anoxic deep water body as well as the “feedback mechanism” on the trace metal concentrations in the surface water body. Heavy metal concentrations in surface sediments of the BLMP-stations varies in between the known ranges and differs for the investigated sub-areas, but still not show a significant temporal trend over the whole period (1998 to 2007)., Die Schwermetallsituation in der Ostsee im Jahre 2007: Wie in den Vorjahren wies die Schwermetallverteilung im Ostseewasser im Jahr 2007 keine deutlichen oder gesundheitsgefährdenden Veränderungen auf. Regionale Konzentrationserhöhungen wie sie z. B. in den letzten Jahren immer wieder in der westlichen Ostsee zu beobachten sind und in 2006 für die gelösten Kupferkonzentrationen beobachtet wurden, werden auf eine windinduzierte, bodennahe Durchmischung und den damit verbundenen sehr variablen Schwebstoffanteil in der Wassersäule zurückgeführt. Durch die Filtration der Proben werden Partikel >0,4μm zurückgehalten, während Partikel < 0,4μm das Filter passieren. Veränderungen, die kurzzeitig durch den Salzwassereinbruch im Februar 2003 hervorgerufen wurden, spiegeln sich in den Langzeittrends kaum wieder. Unterhalb der Redoxklinen die 2007 bei ca. 130 m angetroffen wurde, wurde ein Rückgang der gelösten Metallkonzentrationen für Cddiss, Cudiss und Zndiss beobachtet. Bei den hohen Pbdiss Konzentrationen in der westlichen Ostsee kann eine Probenkontamination nicht ausgeschlossen werden. Weiterhin ist eine leichte Zunahme der CdSPM, CuSPM und ZnSPM mit der Tiefe zu verzeichnen, welches auf die Stabilisierung einer weiteren Stagnationsperiode schließen lässt. Insgesamt gesehen hatte der Salzwassereinbruch 2003 vor allem einen Einfluss auf die Langzeittrends der Metallkonzentrationen im Tiefenwasser der zentralen Ostsee. Insofern bietet sich jetzt ähnlich wie 1995 die außergewöhnliche Chance, die Veränderung der Metallkonzentrationen während der Stabilisierung des anoxischen Tiefenwasserkörpers, sowie deren Rückkopplungsmechanismus auf das Oberflächenwasser während einer weiteren Stagnationsperiode zu beobachten. Die Schwermetallkonzentrationen in den Oberflächensedimenten der BLMP-Stationen variieren innerhalb der bekannten Grenzen und unterscheiden sich für die untersuchten Regionen. Bisher kann jedoch noch kein gesicherter zeitlicher Trend für die einzelnen Stationen festgestellt werden (1998 bis 2007).

Meereswissenschaftliche Berichte No 63 2005 - Marine Science Reports No 63 2005, GOTM is the abbreviation for 'General Ocean Turbulence Model'. It is a one-dimensional water column model for the most important hydrodynamic and thermodynamic processes related to vertical mixing in natural waters. In addition, it has been designed such that it can easily be coupled to 3-D circulation models, and used as a module for the computation of vertical turbulent mixing. The core of the model computes solutions for the one-dimensional versions of the transport equations of momentum, salt and heat. The key component in solving these equations is the model fot he turbulent fluxes of these quantities. The strength of GOTM is the vast number of well-tested turbulence models that have been implemented in the code. These models span the range from simple prescribed expressions for the turbulent diffusivities up to complex Reynolds-stress models with several differential transport equations to solve. Even though, evidently, not all turbulence models published in oceanography could be implemented, at least one member of every relevant model family can be found in GOTM (empirical models, energy models, two-equation models, Algebraic Stress Models, K-profile parameterisations, etc). Besides the classic combination of the hydrodynamic and turbulent part of the model, GOTM has been growing considerably with the years, and new parts have been developed. Sediment transport and the dynamics of sea grass have been added, state-of-the-art numerical schemes have been implemented, and an environment for the assimilation of data and the computation of atmosphere-ocean interactions exists now. In addition, there is a number of scientific research groups that adopted GOTM for their own projects. Even though the modules developed by these groups (biological and bio-geochemical components, air-sea interaction modules, plotting routines, etc) are not part of the core structure of GOTM, as downloadable from our web-site www.gotm.net, they are in most cases available directly from these groups. In that sense, GOTM is an integrated, community based software environment for an almost unlimited range of applications in geophysical turbulence modelling.

This paper focuses on the impact of an oscillating low-speed current on the structure and dynamics of the bottom-boundary layer (BBL) in a small stratified basin. A set of high-resolution current profile measurements in combination with temperature-microstructure measurements were collected during a complete cycle of the internal oscillation ('seiching') in the BBL of Lake Alpnach, Switzerland. It was found that even a relatively long seiching period of 24 hours significantly changed the form of the near-bottom current profiles as well as the dynamics of the turbulent dissipation rate compared to the steady-state law-of-the-wall. A logarithmic fit to the measured current profiles starting at a distance of 0.5 m above the sediment led to inconsistent estimates of both friction velocity and roughness length. Moreover, a phase lag between the current and the turbulent dissipation of 1.5 hours and a persistent maximum in the current profile at a height of 2.5 to 3 m above the sediment were observed. The experimental findings were compared to the results of a k-epsilon turbulence model and showed good agreement in general. Specifically, the inconsistent logarithmic fitting results and the observed phase lag were reproduced well by the model.

Basal melting of marine‐terminating glaciers, through its impact on the forces that control the flow of the glaciers, is one of the major factors determining sea level rise in a world of global warming. Detailed quantitative understanding of dynamic and thermodynamic processes in melt‐water plumes underneath the ice‐ocean interface is essential for calculating the subglacial melt rate. The aim of this study is therefore to develop a numerical model of high spatial and process resolution to consistently reproduce the transports of heat and salt from the ambient water across the plume into the glacial ice. Based on boundary layer relations for momentum and tracers, stationary analytical solutions for the vertical structure of subglacial non‐rotational plumes are derived, including entrainment at the plume base. These solutions are used to develop and test convergent numerical formulations for the momentum and tracer fluxes across the ice‐ocean interface. After implementation of these formulations into a water‐column model coupled to a second‐moment turbulence closure model, simulations of a transient rotational subglacial plume are performed. The simulated entrainment rate of ambient water entering the plume at its base is compared to existing entrainment parameterizations based on bulk properties of the plume. A sensitivity study with variations of interfacial slope, interfacial roughness and ambient water temperature reveals substantial performance differences between these bulk formulations. An existing entrainment parameterization based on the Froude number and the Ekman number proves to have the highest predictive skill. Recalibration to subglacial plumes using a variable drag coefficient further improves its performance., Plain Language Summary: In a world of global warming, the melting of glaciers terminating as floating ice tongues into the oceans of Arctic and Antarctic regions allows those glaciers to flow faster and hence to make a considerable contribution to global mean sea‐level rise. Underneath the ice‐ocean interface, turbulent currents of the order of 10 m thickness (so‐called plumes) develop that transport the melt water from the grounding line where the glacier enters the ocean toward the calving front that marks the seaward end of the glacier. At its base, ambient relatively warm and salty ocean water is mixed into the plumes and is vertically transported toward the ice‐ocean interface, where the melting is increased due to the additional heat supply. Understanding these processes is essential for their incorporation into computer models for the prediction of such melt processes. In this study, an accurate simulation model for the water column is constructed that is able to consistently reproduce these processes. The algorithms developed here are proven to provide reliable results also for models with only a few grid points across the plume and can therefore be implemented into climate models with surface‐following coordinates to more accurately simulate future scenarios of sea level rise., Key Points: A vertically resolving model with second‐moment turbulence closure has been constructed for subglacial plumes. Narrow baroclinic fronts are observed in the surface mixed layer (SML) of the Baltic Sea following an autumn storm. The fronts are subjected to hydrodynamic instabilities that lead to submesoscale and turbulent motions while restratifying the SML. We describe observations from an ocean glider that combines currents, stratification, and turbulence microstructure in a high horizontal resolution (150–300 m) to analyze such fronts. The observations show that SML turbulence is strongly modulated by frontal activity, acting as both source and sink for turbulent kinetic energy. In particular, a direct route to turbulent dissipation within the front is linked to shear instability caused by elevated nongeostrophic shear. The turbulent dissipation of frontal kinetic energy is large enough that it could be a significant influence in the evolution of the front and demonstrates that small‐scale turbulence can act as a significant sink of submesoscale kinetic energy., Key Points: An autonomous ocean glider observed turbulence, currents, and stratification in surface mixed layer submesoscale fronts following a storm.
