Abstract

A high-statistics study of the π0π0-system produced in the π-p→π0π0n reaction at 38GeV/c has been carried out at the IHEP accelerator using the GAMS-2000 multiphoton spectrometer. A partial-wave analysis which includesS, D0, D− andD+ waves has been performed in the |t|-range up to 1 (GeV/c)2. TheS*/f0(980) resonance is seen as a dip in theS-wave amplitude at small |t|. A distinct peak with a mass of 997±5MeV and a width of 48±10MeV is observed in theS-wave at |t|>0.3 (GeV/c)2. The production cross sections are measured.

Abstract

Recent results on ωπ0 partial-wave analysis from the GAMS Collaboration are presented. A partial-wave analysis of the 38 GeV/c π-p charge exchange data confirmed the existence of theρ(2200) radial-orbital excitation of theρ(770) ground-state observed earlier in the same experiment. A new 5−− state,π5(2350), was also observed in this analysis. Masses, widths and production cross-sections for these states are given.

Abstract

The branching ratio of the rare radiative decay ω→ηγ has been measured: BR(ω→ηγ)=(8.3±2.1)·10−4. The experiment was performed at the IHEP (Serpukhov) accelerator with 38 GeV/c incident pions in the chargeexchange reaction π-p→ωn the photons from the ω→ηγ→3γ decay being detected with the multiphoton spectrometer GAMS-2000. The influence of ω-ρ mixing, which was a source of ambiguity in the interpretation of previous experiments, has been much reduced by measuring the ω produced at large momentum transfer.

Abstract

The rare ηγ decay width of the ω-meson has been measured in a model-independent way, with ω produced in 38 GeV/c π−p charge-exchange. Large momentum transfer events have been selected in order to eliminate ω-ρ interference contribution. BR (ω→ηγ) =(8.3±2.1)·10−4. The gammas from ω→ηγ→3γ decay have been detected with the multiphoton spectrometer GAMS-2000 at the IHEP 70 GeV proton accelerator.

Abstract

YAlO3-Am pulsers show no degradation in their light output or resolution upon the application of a magnetic field, at least up to 10 kG. The decrease in the pulse height agrees with the change in the PMT gain calibrated by an LED. When the pulser is mounted on the top face of a 30 cm long CsI far from a PMT with a UV filter inserted between the PMT and the CsI, the light output decreases by a factor of 1 4 , compared with the case of being directly mounted on the PMT window. In the above configuration, the 5.49 MeV α of 241Am gives about 550 photoelectrons, which corresponds to a γ-equivalent energy of 6.6 MeV. Finally, the pulsers were mass-produced with a FWHM resolution of 5.4% (average) for the pulse height.

Abstract

The π − p→ ωω n reaction has been further studied at 38 GeV/ c with increased statistics. The peak at 2 GeV that has been previously observed in the ωω mass spectrum is due to two resonances. The first one is a tensor meson with a mass of 1920 MeV. The second is f 4 (2050). The branching ratio BR [f 4 (2050)→ ωω ] = 0.26±0.06 has been measured.

Abstract

New data on the ν′ν system produced in the π−p charge exchange at 38 GeV c momentum confirm the existence of the narrow ν′ν resonance X(1910). The hypothesis of the X(1910) quantum numbers being a JPC = 1−+, forbidden for the q[ovbar|q] meson, is proposed to explain the extremely low limits obtained for X(1910) decays through π0π0, νν and K0sK0s channels and the flat t-dependence of the X(1910) production cross section.

Abstract

The decay η′ → ηπ0π0 → 6γ has been measured accurately with the GAMS-2000 spectrometer in a high statistics experiment performed at the 70 GeV IHEP accelerator. The parameters of a linear matrix element have been obtained which show that it is practically constant, with a slight dependence on only one of the Dalitz variables.

Abstract

A hodoscope γ spectrometer comprising 1536 lead-glass cells is described. This detector allows the coordinates and the energies of a large number of gammas (up to ≈ 10) to be measured simultaneously and the masses (with an accuracy of 1%) and the momenta of particles decaying into photons to be determined. The use of fast processors allows selection of events by mass, energy and momentum transfer. The procedure for a fully automatic calibration of the spectrometer in an electron beam (with ∼ 1% accuracy) and for its control during long-term physical experiments is described.

Abstract

The neutral decay of the η'(958)-meson η' → ωγ → π0γγ → 4γ has been studied. The experiment has been performed in the IHEP 70 GeV accelerator with the multiphoton hodoscope spectrometer GAMS-2000. The measured branching ratio of the η' → ωγ decay (BR = 0.0330 ± 0.0036) is found to be in agreement with theoretical predictions.

Abstract

Evidence for a new meson decaying into ηη′ has been found in 38 GeV π − p charge-exchange interactions. The mass and the width of this meson are (1917 ± 15) MeV and (90 −50 +35 ) MeV, respectively. Possible spin and parity assignments are J PC = 0 ++ , 1 −+ or 2 ++ , isospin and G -parity are I G = 0 + . The t -dependence of the differential cross section follows an exponential behaviour exp( bt with a small slope: b = (2±1) (GeV/ c ) −2 .Upper limits on its decay into ππ, ηη and K K exotic interpretation of this meson.

A data acquisition system with high amplitude resolution (12 bits), high speed conversion (clock frequency 50 MHz), used in an experiment with a large number of counters (∼ 4200) is described. Physical quantities (masses and momentum transfer) are computed during data transmission itself, allowing improved trigger selectivity.

The partial widths of the η′(958) decays into 2γ, ωγ, 3π0 and ηπ0π0 have been measured with the GAMS-2000 spectrometer at the 70 GeV IHEP accelerator. Upper limits for the η′ decays into 3γ, π0γγ, 2π0 and 4π0 have also been obtained. Abstract

The π − p→ ωω n reaction has studied for the first time at the 70 GeV IHEP accelerator. The six photons from the decay of the two ω mesons were detected in GAMS-2000, a hodoscope multi-photon spectometer. Two resonances decaying into ωω,X (1640) and X(1960), have been observed. Their quantum numbers are J PC =2 ++ , I G =0 + . The reaction is dominated by the one-pion exchange mechanism. The production cross sections σ. BR(X→ ωω ) are 0.65±0.15 μ b and 1.0±0.2 μ b, respectively.

Abstract

The differences in width and in deposited energy between electromagnetic and hadron showers developed by 18.5 and 38 GeV/c pions and electrons in a combined hodoscope detector composed of a GAMS-type electromagnetic calorimeter and a modular hadron calorimeter allow to reject pions or electrons to a level ⪡ 0.1% keeping a detection efficiency larger than 90% when the other particle is selected. The hadron calorimeter helps to efficiently reject background in studies of multiphoton decays of neutral mesons with GAMS.

Abstract

The production of χ particles in the reaction π−p → χ + … has been studied near threshold. The measurements have been performed at the 70 GeV IHEP proton synchrotron using the hodoscope spectrometer GAMS-2000. The χ particles have been identified through their decay χ → J/ψ + γ, J/ψ → e+e−. In the region XF ≳0.4 the fraction of obsered J/ψ particles which is obtained via the decay of χ states is 0.44 ± 0.16. The χ longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions are similar to those obtained for J/ψ. The inclusive production cross section of χ particles (3P1 and 3P2 states) at 38 GeV/c is σXF>0 (π−p → χ + …) = (28±11) nb.

Abstract

In an experiment performed at the 70 GeV IHEP accelerator the rate decay η '(958) → 3 π 0 , which violates isosoin conservation, has been observed. The six final decay gamma rays are detected in the hodoscope spectrometer GAMS-2000. The branching ratio of this decay is BR ( η ' → 3 π 0 ) = (1.6 ± 0.4) × 10 −3 . An estimate of the ratio of the masses of u and d quarks is given.

Abstract

In a high-statistics experiment (200 events/nanobarn) performed at the 70 GeV IHEP accelerator, a new dipion resonance has been observed in π-p collisions at 38 GeV/c momentum. The gamma-rays in reaction π-p → M0n, M0 → π0π0 → 4γ have been detected in the hodoscope spectrometer GAMS-2000. The new meson, r(2510), has a mass (2510±30) MeV/c2, a width (240±60) MeV/c2 and spin-parity J PC=6++. A narrow meson which decays into ηη is observed in 38 GeV/ c π − p collisions at large momentum transfer. The experiment has been performed at the Serpukhov accelerator with the GAMS-2000 spectrometer. The mass of this new meson is (1755 ± 8) MeV, its width is less than 50 MeV. Its spin-parity is J PC =0 ++ or less probably 2 ++ .

Abstract

A 208 channel hodoscope γ spectrometer, the cells of which are made of lead-glass, is described. This detector makes it possible to measure simultaneously the coordinates (with an accuracy of 1.5 mm), and energy (to a few percent) of a large number of gammas and to reconstruct the mass and momentum of the particles decaying into gammas. The characteristics of the spectrometer have been studied in an electron beam and also under the conditions of real experiments ( π 0 → 2 γ ).

A large cellular hadron calorimeter consisting of independent modular total aborption counters (iron-scintillator sandwiches) is described. Scintillation light is collected using light guides with a wavelength shifter. The characteristics of the detector have been studied in a 200 GeV hadron beam. The detector makes it possible to measure simultaneously the energy and coordinates of several particles.

Abstract

New data on the scalar G(1590) meson which decays into ηη have been obtained in an experiment at the CERN SPS. η pairs are detected with the electromagnetic calorimeter GAMS both through their decay into 4γ and into 8γ. ϵ(1300), f(1270), f′(1525) as well as the spin-4 h(2030) mesons have also been observed to decay in the same mode. Abstract

The exculsive production of π0, η, and η′ mesons in π+N central collisions has been studied with 300 GeV incident pions. The experiment has been performed at the CERN SPS. The gammas from decaying mesons were detected in the hodoscope multiphoton spectrometer GAMS-4000. A non q q ,J PC = 1 −+ , I G =1 − meson has been observed in the study of the exclusive reaction π−p→π0ηn at 100 GeV. Its mass is (1406±20) MeV. Its width is (180±30) MeV.

Abstract

The possibilities offered by a novel experimental technique — the hodoscope hadron calorimeter — to determine coordinates of high-energy hadrons accurately by measuring the transverse spread of their associated showers have been studied. This accuracy is shown to improve with energy as ( ln 4 E + q 1 E) 1 2 /E and at E = 300 GeV it reaches σy = 3 mm. The shrinkage of the hadron shower and the growth of its central component with increasing energy have been measured. As for energy resolution, the hodoscope calorimeter does not yield to conventional calorimeters.

Abstract

Data are presented on the yields of π − , K − , and p produced at small angles by 70 GeV proton-aluminium interactions. The momenta of the secondaries studied were greater than 40 GeV/ c . Upper limits have been obtained on the production of antideuterons and possible new particles up to a mass of 2.2 GeV in this new energy region.
