Vegetable and fish consumption are important sources of micronutrients, protein, and healthy fats for human health. However, in Ethiopia, the consumption of these foods is low and varies across urban areas. This study aims to explore the potential of vegetable and fish production and marketing for enhancing food and nutrition security in Ethiopia, using a case study approach of nine urban areas. The study employs mixed methods, including household surveys, focus group discussions, key informant interviews, and market analysis. The results show that vegetable and fish production and marketing are constrained by several factors, such as land and water availability, input and output prices, infrastructure, policies, and consumer preferences. The study also identifies opportunities and challenges for scaling up vegetable and fish production and marketing, such as improving value chains, increasing awareness and demand, strengthening institutional support, and addressing environmental and social issues. The study concludes with policy recommendations for enhancing vegetable and fish consumption and production in Ethiopia.

Consumption of vegetables is low among preschoolers and does not meet WHO recommendations. We conducted a systematic review of home-based interventions aimed at increasing vegetable consumption and liking among preschoolers. The main aim was to synthesize existing studies and to identify relevant features of successful interventions, especially looking at those with long-lasting effects. A comprehensive search strategy was performed using Psychinfo, PsychArticles, Psyndex, Medline and ERIC databases. Articles published until February 2020, regarding evaluation of vegetable intake and/or liking following an intervention, were included. Fourteen articles were selected, encompassing seven intervention strategies: familiarization with vegetable, tasting of the vegetable, intake of the vegetable, reward, information to parents about healthy eating, how-to-do tips to parents to improve healthy eating, intervention tailored to the characteristics of the family. Successful interventions on vegetable intake did not present systematic similarities in terms of type of intervention, but were characterized by an intense intervention (high frequency/length ratio). Successful interventions on vegetable liking mainly included a small reward. Interestingly, the few studies including a long-term follow-up found persistent positive effects. Despite interesting and promising outcomes, the present review highlighted a number of methodological issues that limited the generalisability of findings. Such limitations are discussed, together with outlets for future directions concerning this research topic.

SuperFIT aims to improve the dietary and physical activity behaviour of children (2-4 years) in the Dutch childcare and home setting. Healthy parenting practices, policies, and availability of materials, fruits, and vegetables were promoted over the course of a year. This pilot study, with a quasi-experimental design, examined the effectiveness of children's intake of fruits, vegetables, water, and sweet beverages. Families attending intervention preschools could participate in the partial (preschool) or full (preschool + home) intervention. Parental 24-hour recalls assessed the child's diet at baseline and two follow-ups. Data from 81 control and 88 intervention children was included in a three-level hierarchical logistic regression. The full intervention showed significantly favourable effects for sweet beverages (B = -1.85, P < 0.05) and unfavourable effects for vegetables (B = -1.94, P < 0.05), compared to the control between the second follow-up and baseline. No significant effects were found for fruit or water, nor for the partial intervention. More research in a larger sample is needed to confirm current findings.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether a nutritional intervention motivating increased vegetable consumption would be an effective treatment and diet therapy for patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. We examined 15 patients with this disease (5 men and 10 women). During the 6-month intervention period, all participants received a small amount of vegetables twice a month as a nutritional education tool aimed at increasing vegetable consumption. They also received nutritional counseling and underwent ultrasound and blood biochemical examinations at baseline and 3 and 6 months after initiation of the intervention. Moreover, they were requested to submit dietary records for any 2 days. Green, white, and total vegetable intakes were significantly higher at 3 and 6 months than at baseline in 8 patients. These patients had significantly lower alanine amino­transferase and triglyceride concentrations than those whose vegetable intake did not increase. Additionally, green vegetable intake significantly negatively correlated with weight at 3 and 6 months (r = −0.617, p = 0.032 and r = −0.848, p = 0.008, respectively). These results suggest that our nutritional approach effectively increased vegetable consumption in at least some patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, consequently improving their condition.

Background In theory, Motivational Interviewing (MI) fidelity should be associated with client outcomes. Nevertheless, this fidelity-effectiveness association is rarely investigated. This study evaluated the extent to which Telephone Motivational Interviewing (TMI) fidelity is associated with change in self-reported physical activity (PA), fruit intake, and vegetable consumption. Method Adults in primary care (45–70 years) participated in a study that compared the effect of tailor print communication, telephone motivational interviewing (TMI), and a combination of the two on PA, fruit intake, and vegetable consumption. MI fidelity was assessed using the behavioral coding method “Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity Code (MITI)” in 409 randomly selected audio-recorded sessions, representing 232 participants of the TMI group. The associations between MI fidelity scores and the behavioral changes from baseline to 47-week follow-up were examined using backward multiple linear regression analyses (adjusted for covariates). Results A significant and positive association between the percentage of MI adherent responses and improvements in PA and fruit consumption was found with respectively a small and medium effect size. The global rating “Spirit” (which resembles an all-at-once appraisal of the interviewer’s MI competence) was significantly, but inversely associated with progress in vegetable intake with a medium effect size. Conclusion The finding that relatively lower MI competency was associated with higher vegetable consumption went against our expectations. Findings suggest that practicing MI-consistent skills was beneficial in promoting PA and fruit consumption, but moderated vegetable intake. This study contributes to the scientific confidence that TMI enables change in PA and fruit intake.

Examensarbetets syfte är att öka kunskapen om de förutsättningar som finns för att främja barns grönsakskonsumtion i förskolan. Metoden som använts är kvalitativa semistrukturerade intervjuer av legitimerade förskollärare i en kommun i Värmlands län i Sverige. Empirin har analyserats genom en kvalitativ innehållsanalys. Resultatet redovisas utifrån examensarbetets frågeställningar och visar att förskollärare i stor utsträckning upplever förskollärarutbildningen kopplad till kost och grönsaker som otillräcklig och att den stöttning förskollärare får av kollegor, rektor och utomstående till viss del upplevs som bristfällig. Resultatet visar också att förskollärare generellt sett har genomtänkta förhållningssätt kring kost- och grönsaksundervisning. The aim of this study is to increase knowledge of the existing prerequisites for encouraging children’s vegetable consumption in preschool. The used method is qualitative semi-structured interviews with legitimated preschool teachers in a municipality in Värmland county in Sweden. The empirics were analyzed through qualitative content analysis. The results are presented according to the study’s question formulations and show that preschool teachers see the preschool teacher education related to diet and vegetables as inadequate and that the experienced support from colleagues, principal and outsiders is seen as insufficient to a certain degree. The results also show that preschool teachers at large have thought-out approaches and attitudes toward teaching about a healthy diet and vegetable consumption.

Cilj ovog rada bio je utvrditi prehrambene navike djece osnovnoškolske dobi te procijeniti hranjivu vrijednost i prihvatljivost školskih jelovnika s posebnim osvrtom na konzumaciju i dostupnost voća i povrća. Također, cilj je bio, sukladno dobivenim podacima, osmisliti i provesti trogodišnju višekomponentnu intervenciju sa svrhom povećanja unosa voća i povrća u djece. Istraživanje je uključilo 681 dijete iz 14 osnovnih škola s i bez školskog vrta. Prehrambene navike djece procijenjene su temeljem trodnevnog dnevnika prehrane te je istražena njihova povezanost sa stilom života. Kvaliteta školskih obroka procijenjena je analizom 2469 cjelodnevnih jelovnika. Utjecaj intervencije na preferenciju prema voću i povrću evaluirana je pomoću hedonističke skale s pet stupnjeva, dok je utjecaj na unos procijenjen upitnikom o učestalosti konzumirane hrane i pića. Intervencija je uključivala 23 interaktivne radionice, 10 kroskurikularnih aktivnosti, 13 izazova, senzornu izloženost edukativnim posterima, edukaciju roditelja putem web stranice i implementaciju novih jela u sustav školske prehrane. Istraživanje je pokazalo da manje od 30 % dnevnih školskih jelovnika ima adekvatnu energijsku vrijednost. Prosječna dnevna masa serviranog voća i povrća u školskim obrocima varira od 20,1 ± 4,7 g do 178,8 ± 3,3 g, ovisno o vrsti i broju obroka koji se serviraju u školi, što je ispod preporuka za ponudu voća i povrća kroz školske obroke. Po završetku intervencije povećana je preferencija za 0,4 jedinica i unos voća i povrća za 102 g dnevno u djece u intervencijskoj skupini. Intervencija „Nutri-školica“ pokazala se uspješnom u promjeni unosa i preferencije voća i povrća u djece osnovnoškolske dobi. The aim of this study was to determine the eating habits of primary school children and to assess the nutritional value and acceptability of school menus, especially with regard to the consumption and availability of fruit and vegetables. In addition, based on the data obtained, a three-year multi-component intervention aimed at increasing children's consumption of fruit and vegetables was to be designed and implemented. 681 children from 14 primary schools participated in the study. Children's eating habits were assessed using 3-day dietary records and related to children's lifestyle habits. The quality of school meals was assessed using 2469 menus. The impact of the intervention on fruit and vegetable preference was assessed using a 5-point hedonic scale, while the impact on consumption was assessed using a food frequency questionnaire. The intervention included 23 interactive classroom workshops, 10 cross-curricular activities, 13 homework challenges, visual exposure with educational posters in classrooms, parent education via the website and the implementation of new dishes into the school food system. The results showed that less than 30% of daily school menus have adequate energy value. The average amount of fruit and vegetables in school meals varied from 20.1 ± 4.7 g to 178.8 ± 3.3 g, depending on the type and number of school meals served, which is below the recommendations for fruit and vegetable provision in school meals. At the end of the intervention, children in the intervention group increased their preferences by 0.4 and their fruit and vegetable intake by 102 g daily. The Nutri-školica intervention has been successful in changing fruit and vegetable preferences and intake among primary school children.

While the association between fruit consumption and bladder cancer risk has been extensively reported, studies have had inadequate statistical power to investigate associations between types of fruit and bladder cancer risk satisfactorily. Fruit consumption in relation to bladder cancer risk was investigated by pooling individual data from 13 cohort studies. Cox regression models with attained age as time scale were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) for intakes of total fruit and citrus fruits, soft fruits, stone fruits, tropical fruits, pome fruits and fruit products. Analyses were stratified by sex, smoking status and bladder cancer subtype. During on average 11.2 years of follow-up, 2836 individuals developed incident bladder cancer. Increasing fruit consumption (by 100 g/day) was inversely associated with the risk of bladder cancer in women (HR = 0.92; 95% CI 0.85-0.99). Although in women the association with fruit consumption was most evident for higher-risk nonmuscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC; HR = 0.72; 95% CI 0.56-0.92), the test for heterogeneity by bladder cancer subtype was nonsignificant (P-heterogeneity = .14). Increasing fruit consumption (by 100 g/day) was not associated with bladder cancer risk in men (HR = 0.99; 95% CI 0.94-1.03), never smokers (HR = 0.96; 95% CI 0.88-1.05), former smokers (HR = 0.98; 95% CI 0.92-1.05) or current smokers (HR = 0.95; 95% CI 0.89-1.01). The consumption of any type of fruit was not found to be associated with bladder cancer risk (P values > .05). Our study supports no evidence that the consumption of specific types of fruit reduces the risk of bladder cancer. However, increasing total fruit consumption may reduce bladder cancer risk in women.

Objective:The objective was to examine the association between parenting practices, toddler’s dietary intake and BMI. In addition, potential moderation of these associations by general parenting and child temperament was examined.Design:The current cross-sectional study assessed parenting practices using the Comprehensive Feeding Practices Questionnaire, general parenting using the Comprehensive General Parenting Questionnaire, child temperament using the Child Behavior Check List, and children’s dietary intake through parental questionnaires. Children’s weight and length were objectively measured to determine BMI z-scores. Associations were examined using multiple linear regression analyses. Moderation was examined using interaction terms.Setting:Home setting.Participants:393 Dutch toddlers (age 1–3 years) and their parents recruited through fifty childcare centres and preschools in the Netherlands.Results:Various practices were related to children’s diet and BMI. For instance, the availability of healthy foods is the most important predictor of healthy dietary intake (e.g. β = –0·35 for sweets; β = 0·18 for fruit). The association of availability with a healthier diet was strongest when parents scored low on the positive parenting style dimensions, including nurturance, structure and/or behavioural control. In addition, it seemed that a high availability of healthy foods and low availability of unhealthy foods is especially beneficial for children showing withdrawal/depressive, anxious or overactive behaviour, while encouraging balance and variety is not beneficial for these children. All other practices were related to children’s diet and/or BMI as well.Conclusions:The findings underline the importance of viewing the impact of parenting practices in the context of general parenting and child temperament.

Introduction: Hypertension is one of silent killer that become priority on health coverage era. Early detection and risk factors related must be conduct for effective prevention. Methods: This research aimed to detected earlier hypertension case in adult and elderly people in Mulyorejo Public Health Center (PHC), Surabaya, Indonesia. Survey was conduct from 12th to 19th November with the target adult and elderly that were visited PHC. Structured questionnary were used as a screening instrument, and examination using digital tensimeter were used as gold standard. Family history, smoking, physical activity, vegetable consumption, and fruit consumption were recorded as independent variable. Data were analyzed using chi-square test. Accidental sampling and total 0f 100 participants were joined this research, and 10% of them classified as hypertension based on examination using tensimeter, whereas 16% participants classified as hypertension based on structured questionnaire. Result: Validity was counted, and sensitivity showed 70%, spesifity was 87.78%, positive predictive value was 38.8%, negative predictive value was 96.34%. There’s no significant relationship between the independent variables family history (p=0.48 ; OR=1.64 ; 95% CI= 0.42

The present study explored whether motivational constructs for diet and physical activity (PA) cluster and how these motivational constructs relate to dietary and PA behaviour. Data of 1142 participants were used from a randomised controlled trial examining the effects of a web-based diet and PA promotion intervention based on self-determination theory and motivational interviewing. Motivation was assessed using the Treatment Self-Regulation Questionnaire and Behavioural Regulation in Exercise Questionnaire. The dietary outcomes were measured using an adapted Food Frequency Questionnaire. PA was assessed using the Short QUestionnaire to ASsess Health. Spearman rank-order correlations showed large correlation coefficients (rs ≥ 0⋅63) between similar motivational constructs between the two lifestyle domains, except for intrinsic motivation where a medium correlation coefficient was found (rs = 0⋅41). Furthermore, the exploratory factor analysis illustrated that more self-determined forms of motivation seem to be more domain-specific. In contrast, non-self-determined forms of motivation seem to be domain-independent. Last, regression analyses demonstrated that intrinsic motivation towards PA was the only motivational construct significantly positively associated with all PA sub-behaviours (standardised regression coefficients ranging from 0⋅17 to 0⋅28, all P < 0⋅0125). Intrinsic motivation to eat healthily was significantly positively associated with fruits, vegetables and fish intake (standardised regression coefficients ranging from 0⋅11 to 0⋅16, all P < 0⋅0125), but not with unhealthy snacks. Insight of this exploratory study is useful for understanding the interrelationships of motivational induced behaviours, the development of interventions targeting multiple behaviours, and the construction of questionnaires.

This study is the first to consider, and estimate, the influence of gardening routines on exposures to both health benefits and health risks. This holistic approach helped to contrast the healthy lifestyle of gardening with health risks from exposures to potentially toxic elements such as Cd and Pb in urban environments. A total of 120 participants who grew their own produce in an urban setting were recruited to the study. A detailed questionnaire was developed that included sections on gardening activity, cultivation and consumption of produce, consumption of commercially grown produce, and other lifestyle factors. Administered alongside the questionnaire was the Short Form 36 (v2) as a standardised tool for measuring physical and mental health. Fruit and vegetable consumption was found to be correlated with the amount of gardening individuals did in autumn/winter and was greater than fruit and vegetable consumption, on average, in the UK general population. Levels of physical activity were also found to be higher in our study than regional averages, whilst BMI was lower than average. This is the first study to find a relationship between gardening more regularly (in autumn/winter) and the physical component of the Short Form 36, and this relationship was elevated compared to non-gardening populations. The physical component scores from this study were also significantly higher for older participants, compared to means from a Western population. This finding supports studies suggesting that gardening may be more beneficial for the elderly generation. These benefits were assessed in the context of potential exposures estimated from the type and frequency of produce being consumed. The benefit of maintaining a healthy lifestyle is likely to outweigh the health risks of gardening on soils mildly contaminated with Cd and Pb but requires formal consideration within a risk management framework.

It is a known fact that diabetes can mostly be prevented or delayed with health-promoting and protective lifestyle changes in people at high risk of diabetes. In addition, awareness of the risk of diabetes in the relatives of individuals with diabetes may also contribute to the prevention of the disease. This study was carried out to determine the relationship between perceived and actual diabetes risk level with promotive and protective health behaviors in relatives of individuals with type 2 diabetes. This cross-sectional study included 596 individuals. Of the participants, 62.7% stated that they perceive their risk of developing diabetes at a high-very high level in the next 10 years. The participants had promotive and protective health behaviors at a moderate level. No significant difference was found between the perceived diabetes risk level and promotive and protective health behaviors. Health professionals should take more responsibility for risk identification and risk management. © 2022 by Author/s and Licensed by Modestum.

The topic of the submitted diploma thesis is the Analysis of consumption and species representation of vegetables as a source of alimentary antioxidants in the primary school pupils´ catering system of pupils and a proposal of a possibility of the limit indicators´ improvement. The task of this diploma thesis was to find out whether school canteens manage to successfully meet the standard of the consumer basket and nutritional standards set for school meals in the commodity of vegetables and to find out which types of vegetables are used the most in school canteens. The thesis contains two parts. The theoretical part describes the topics related to the school catering system through the history to the present days, school catering legislation, the nutritional values of catering in our country and brief characteristics of vegetables. The chapter Consumer Basket gets us acquainted with: nutritional standards for school catering, financial limits for the food purchase, compliance with the Consumer Basket nutritional recommendations and consumer basket´s compilation methods. The last chapter of the theoretical part deals with various specifics of vegetables and the content of different kinds of vitamins and minerals. The practical part evaluates the results filling the consumer basket in the commodity of vegetables according to the standard focusing on school catering. The results examine the average vegetable content within one lunch. The results also review the actual and average daily consumption of vegetables.

Introduction Many instruments for assessing general parenting have been reported as burdensome and are thus seldom used in studies exploring children’s energy balance-related behaviors or weight. This study evaluates the factorial structure of the item-reduced version of the Comprehensive General Parenting Questionnaire (CGPQ), which assesses five constructs of general parenting. Methods The study uses data from two cross-sectional studies: Study 1 in 2014 (n = 173) and Study 2 in 2015–16 (n = 805). Parents of children aged three to six answered the CGPQ; in Study 1 the 69-item version, and in Study 2 the 29-item version. The reduction was based on the results of the confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) in Study 1. In both datasets, internal consistency, as Cronbach’s alphas and intraclass correlations between the items of each construct, was tested. A combined assessment of the CFA and items response theory evaluated the construct validity and the item importance for the 29-item version, and a further the reduced 22-item version. Results In Study 1, the highest Cronbach’s alphas were shown for the five constructs in the 69-item version. A higher intraclass correlation was found between the constructs in the 69- and 29-item versions, than between the 69- and the 22-item version. However, a high concordance was found between the constructs in the 29- and 22-item versions in both Study 1 and in Study 2 (0.76–1.00). Testing the goodness-of-fit of the CFA models revealed that the 22-item model fulfilled all the criteria, showing that it had a better factorial structure than the 29-item model. Standard estimations ranged from 0.20 to 0.76 in the 22-item version. Conclusion The reduced 22- and 29-item versions of the 69-item CGPQ showed good model fit, the 22-item version the better of the two. These short versions can be used to assess general parenting without overburdening the respondents.

Research background: Vegetables are important sources of nutrition to many households. Understanding the household demand system of leafy African indigenous vegetables (AIVs) in Kenya could enhance designing strategies to increase their consumption levels. Purpose of the article: The study was conducted to evaluate the effects of demographic variables on budget shares for commonly consumed leafy vegetables and to generate vegetable demand elasticities. Methods: A stratified multi-stage sampling approach selected 168 and 282 respondents in rural and urban areas, respectively. The study used primary data, and a Linear Approximate Almost Ideal Demand System was estimated using the Seemingly Unrelated Regression method. Findings, value & novelty: Own-price elasticities indicated that leafy AIV crops are normal goods. Cross-price elasticities indicated leafy AIVs are more complementary to each other and can be substituted for the consumption of exotic vegetables. The price effect could substantially contribute to changes in demand than would income. Vegetable demand could still increase with a future increase in household income. Expenditure elasticities classified cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.) and spider plant (Cleome gynandra L.) as necessary vegetables. 日本人における、野菜摂取の認知症罹患に対する効果を総括するために、システマチックレビューとメタアナリシスを行った。野菜接種を曝露として認知症の罹患または有病のリスクを報告しているものは3件しかなかった。これらのリクス比の固定効果モデルによる加重平均値は0.78で統計学的にも有意に1.0よりも小さかった。研究相互の不均一性は統計学的には明らかではなく、日本人における研究でも野菜摂取が認知症のリスクを抑制するものと考えられる。ただし、使用できた研究報告はエビデンスレベルが高くなく、また曝露情報にバイアスが影響している可能性があるものもあり、より多くの追跡研究による報告に基づく見当が必要と考えられる。国内では、複数の大きなコホート研究が実施されている。これらから、野菜摂取を含む形の食品摂取習慣、あるいは食品摂取パターンによる認知症リスクの報告は見られるが、単独の食品（群）としての野菜の寄与を評価できるデータはまだ少ない。生活習慣からの予防の可能性を明らかにするために、このような視点からの解析や報告が進められることが重要であると思われる。

By providing participants with standard versus sustainable (plant-based) dietary recommendations for 3 weeks, the present research tested the impact of recommendations on dietary compliance. Furthermore, predictors of food intake were tested across food categories. Participants in the sustainable diet condition complied less with recommendations as compared to those in the standard diet condition and were less motivated to continue complying after the intervention. Taste was the main predictor of intake across food categories. Together, this stresses the importance of considering factors stimulating consumers' compliance when formulating food recommendations. 14 p.

Although evidence exists of the association between children's temperament and weight, only few studies have examined how temperament is associated with actual food consumption among preschoolers. We examined concurrent associations between children's temperament and the consumption of different foods, and investigated whether the association between children's temperament and vegetable consumption is mediated by vegetable-related parenting practices. We utilized the data from the cross-sectional DAGIS study of 864 preschool children aged between three to six and their families, conducted between 2015 and 2016 in Finland. The parents reported their children's temperament, food consumption, and their vegetable-related parenting practices. Adjusted logistic regression analyses found positive associations between surgency and vegetable consumption as well as between effortful control and vegetable consumption. Both associations were mediated by one examined vegetable-related parenting practice: enhanced availability and autonomy support. No associations were found between children's negative affectivity and food consumption or vegetable-related parenting practices. In conclusion, children's temperament may be an important factor behind food-related parenting practices and children's diet. However, further longitudinal research and research covering different food-related parenting practices and home environment factors is necessary to better understand the complex associations between temperament and food consumption among young children.

Selective or picky eating can be an obstacle for a varied diet. One reason why people reject certain foods is because they do not like the texture. Several studies show that in children tactile sensitivity is related to pickiness in eating. Children who do not like the feel of sand or of slimy substances with their hands also reject more kinds of food, presumably because the children are more sensitive to the mouthfeel of several food textures. There is however hardly any research on the role of tactile sensitivity in adult food acceptance. Two important questions therefore are: Is tactile sensitivity related to picky eating in adults and if so, does mouthfeel mediate the relation between tactile sensitivity and pickiness? In the current study, picky eating, subjective tactile sensitivity, and evaluation of mouthfeel were measured in 87 undergraduate students. It appeared that the three measures are moderately related, with mouthfeel mediating the relation between subjective tactile sensitivity and pickiness in eating. These results show that in adults too, tactile sensitivity plays a role in the acceptance of a larger variety of foods. This means that when aiming to change or improve dietary quality of adults, acceptance of food texture should be taken into account.

However, the effects of a prolonged elevation of nitrate intake through an increase in vegetable consumption are understudied. OBJECTIVE: Our primary aim was to determine the impact of 12 wk of increased daily consumption of nitrate-rich vegetables or nitrate supplementation on blood pressure (BP) in (pre)hypertensive middle-aged and older adults. METHODS: In a 12-wk randomized, controlled study (Nijmegen, The Netherlands), 77 (pre)hypertensive participants (BP: 144 ± 13/87 ± 7 mmHg, age: 65 ± 10 y) either received an intervention with personalized monitoring and feedback aiming to consume ∼250-300 g nitrate-rich vegetables/d (∼350-400 mg nitrate/d; n = 25), beetroot juice supplementation (400 mg nitrate/d; n = 26), or no intervention (control; n = 26). Before and after intervention, 24-h ambulatory BP was measured. Data were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA (time × treatment), followed by within-group (paired t-test) and between-group analyses (1-factor ANOVA) where appropriate. RESULTS: The 24-h systolic BP (SBP) (primary outcome) changed significantly (P-interaction time × treatment = 0.017) with an increase in the control group (131 ± 8 compared with 135 ± 10 mmHg; P = 0.036); a strong tendency for a decline in the nitrate-rich vegetable group (129 ± 10 compared with 126 ± 9 mmHg; P = 0.051) which was different from control (P = 0.020); but no change in the beetroot juice group (133 ± 11 compared with 132 ± 12 mmHg; P = 0.56). A significant time × treatment interaction was also found for daytime SBP (secondary outcome, P = 0.011), with a significant decline in the nitrate-rich vegetable group (134 ± 10 compared with 129 ± 9 mmHg; P = 0.006) which was different from control (P = 0.010); but no changes in the beetroot juice (138 ± 12 compared with 137 ± 14 mmHg; P = 0.41) and control group (136 ± 10 compared with 137 ± 11 mmHg; P = 0.08). Diastolic BP (secondary outcome) did not change in any of the groups. CONCLUSIONS: A prolonged dietary intervention focusing on high-nitrate vegetable intake is an effective strategy to lower SBP in (pre)hypertensive middle-aged and older adults. Scope: Plasma fatty acids (FAs) are associated with the development of cardiovascular diseases and metabolic syndrome. The aim of our study is to assess the relationship between fruit and vegetable (F&V) consumption and plasma FAs and their subtypes. Methods and Results: Plasma FAs are assessed in a cross-sectional analysis of a subsample of 240 subjects from the PREDIMED-Plus study. Participants are categorized into four groups of fruit, vegetable, and fat intake according to the food frequency questionnaire. Plasma FA analysis is performed using gas chromatography. Associations between FAs and F&V consumption are adjusted for age, sex, physical activity, body mass index (BMI), total energy intake, and alcohol consumption. Plasma saturated FAs are lower in groups with high F&V consumption (-1.20 mg cL−1 [95% CI: [-2.22, - 0.18], p-value = 0.021), especially when fat intake is high (-1.74 mg cL−1 [95% CI: [-3.41, -0.06], p-value = 0.042). Total FAs and n-6 polyunsaturated FAs tend to be lower in high consumers of F&V only in the high-fat intake groups. Conclusions: F&V consumption is associated with lower plasma saturated FAs when fat intake is high. These findings suggest that F&V consumption may have different associations with plasma FAs depending on their subtype and on the extent of fat intake.

Consistently linked with children?s food consumption are food availability and accessibility. However, less is known about potential individual differences among young children in their susceptibility to home food environments. The purpose of the study was to examine whether the association between home food availability and accessibility of sugar-rich foods and drinks (SFD) or fruits and vegetables (FV) and children?s consumption of these foods differ according to their temperament. The study used two cross-sectional datasets collected as part of the Increased Health and Wellbeing in Preschools (DAGIS) study: 1) a cross-sectional data of 864 children aged 3?6 years old collected between fall 2015 and spring 2016, and 2) an intervention baseline data of 802 children aged 3?6 collected in fall 2017. Parents reported their children?s temperament, consumption of FV and SFD, and home availability and accessibility of SFD and FV. Examination of whether associations between home availability and accessibility of FV and their consumption differ according to children?s temperament involved using linear regression models. Similar models were used to examine association between home availability and accessibility of SFD and their consumption, and the moderating role of temperament. The association between home accessibility of SFD and their consumption frequency was dependent on the level of children?s negative affectivity. More frequent consumption of SFD was observed with higher home accessibility of SFD. The association was stronger in children with higher scores in negative affectivity. No other interactions were found. Children with higher negative affectivity are possibly more vulnerable to food cues in the home environment than children with lower negative affectivity. Consideration of children?s individual characteristics is necessary in supporting their healthy eating.

Background Low vegetable intake is one of the key dietary risk factors known to be associated with a range of health problems, including cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), cancer, and diabetes and kidney diseases (DKDs). Using data from Japan’s National Health and Nutrition Surveys and the Global Burden of Diseases study in 2017, this study aimed to forecast the impact of change in vegetable intake on disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) between 2017 and 2040 for three diseases. Methods We generated a three-component model of cause-specific DALYs, including changes in major behavioural and metabolic risk predictors, the socio-demographic index and an autoregressive integrated moving average model to project future DALY rates for 2017–2040 using the data between 1990 and 2016. Data on Vegetable consumption and risk predictors, and DALY rate were obtained from Japan’s National Health and Nutrition Surveys and the Global Burden of Diseases Study in 2017. We also modelled three scenarios of better, moderate and worse cases to evaluate the impact of change in vegetable consumption on the DALY rates for three diseases (CVDs, cancer, and DKDs). Results Projected mean vegetable intake in the total population showed a decreasing trend through 2040 to 237.7 g/day. A significant difference between the reference scenario and the better case scenario was observed with un-overlapped 95% prediction intervals of DALY rates in females aged 20–49 years (− 8.0%) for CVDs, the total population for cancer (− 5.6%), and in males (− 8.2%) and females (− 13.7%) for DKDs. Conclusions Our analysis indicates that increased vegetable consumption would have a significant reduction in the burdens of CVDs, cancer and DKDs in Japan. By estimating the disease burden attributable to low vegetable intake under different scenarios of future vegetable consumption, our study can inform the design of targeted interventions for public health challenges.

In rural Ethiopia, people consume mainly cereals and pulses. Integrating vegetables into the multi-storey cropping system of the Yayu Coffee Forest Biosphere Reserve could improve nutritional health while reducing pressure on natural habitats in the biodiversity hotspot. The aim of the study was to assess the performance of cowpea under shade and its consumer acceptance as leafy vegetables. Trials compared continuous harvesting with uprooting, and food preference was tested. A baseline survey was conducted in four villages and revealed that cropping of vegetables in coffee plantations would be adoptable by 17% of farmers. The cumulatively harvested mean leaf yield (18.15 t ha−1) was significantly higher than the leaf yield of the uprooted cowpea (6.56 t ha−1). As many as 41% (52%) of participants liked cowpea dishes (very much). Based on the trial yields and the RDA, a 25 m2 cowpea plot could produce sufficient vitamin A for 2.1–4.6 adults, iron for 0.8–1.7, and vitamin C for 1.3–2.9 adults during six months. Cowpea was successfully cultivated below coffee, yielded most when repeatedly harvested and showed a high acceptance among consumers. The consumption of cowpea leaves from coffee forests could contribute to a balanced diet and improved nutrition.

Previously, we found bitter and sweet tastes to be positive and negative predictors of vegetable liking and intake. Here, we examined interactions between retronasal olfactory sensations (flavor) and tastes as potential predictors of vegetable liking and intake. Adults (n = 97), diverse in bodyweight (40% overweight/obese), rated green vegetables (asparagus, Brussels sprouts, kale) for flavor (sampled with nose plugged, then unplugged to perceive flavor volatiles) and tastes (bitterness and sweetness). They were phenotyped for genetic variation in taste (propylthiouracil (PROP) bitterness) and taste function (quinine bitterness on the tongue tip relative to whole mouth); vegetable consumption frequency was self-reported. Greater increases in vegetable flavor sensations (difference of nose unplugged v. plugged) were associated with greater vegetable bitterness but not sweetness. Those tasting PROP as most bitter also reported greater flavor sensations (nose unplugged) but not greater flavor increases (difference of unplugged v. plugged). With retronasal flavor input, hedonic ratings increased significantly for asparagus, showed little change for kale, and were highly variability for Brussels sprouts; these ratings did not vary by taste phenotype. Those with greater body mass index reported more hedonic increases with vegetable flavor (difference of unplugged v. plugged). In multivariate modeling, PROP bitterness directly predicted vegetable bitterness and flavor. Vegetable flavor negatively influenced vegetable liking and intake indirectly via bitterness, and showed direct negative effects on vegetable intake. These findings support the need for basic and applied research across the food system (e.g., farm to table) to identify ways to enhance pleasant oral sensations from vegetables (e.g., sensory-guided breeding). More pleasant oral sensations would encourage vegetable consumption in support of healthy eating and body weight, especially for individuals with genetic propensity to experience negative oral sensations from vegetables.

The lack of access to full-service restaurants (FSRs) is generally thought to be a risk factor for childhood obesity, as it could discourage healthful eating-out behaviours while increasing the exposure to unhealthful food venues as “compensatory” options. However, the association between FSR access and childhood obesity has not been comprehensively reviewed previously. A literature search was conducted on PubMed and Web of Science for articles published before 1 January 2019 that examined the association between FSR access and weight-related behaviours and outcomes among children and adolescents. Eighteen studies conducted in three countries were identified, published from 2006 to 2018 with a median sample size of 2352 (ranging from 323 to 529 367). Findings were mixed among these 18 studies that reported on the association between access to FSRs and weight-related outcomes. Our meta-analyses showed that there were no significant associations of FSR access with the level of body mass index (BMI) and the BMI z-score among children. Also, there was no apparent evidence on the association between FSR access and the risk of overweight/obesity. Our results need to be interpreted with caution, considering the menu quality of FSRs and heterogeneity of eligible studies in this meta-analysis. Well-designed epidemiologic studies are warranted to further elaborate on the potential association between FSR access and children's weight status. © 2020 The Authors. Eating behavior is an important aspect for dietary quality and long-term health. This study examined associations between eating vegetables first at a meal and food intakes among preschool children in Tokyo, Japan. We used cross-sectional data of 135 preschool children from seven nursery schools in Adachi City, Tokyo, Japan. Caregivers completed a survey on child&rsquo, s eating behaviors and a diet questionnaire. Linear regression was used to examine frequency of eating vegetables first at a meal and food intakes, percent difference and the corresponding 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were presented. Overall, 25.2% of children reported eating vegetables first at a meal every time, 52.6% sometimes, and 22.2% not often or never. In the multivariate analysis, higher vegetable intake remained significant after adjusting for other covariates (compared with the group of eating vegetables first not often or never, the group reported sometimes: 27%, 95% CI: 0&ndash, 63%, the group reported every time: 93%, 95% CI: 43&ndash, 159%). No significant difference in intake by frequency categories of eating vegetables first was observed for other food groups, including fruits, meat, fish, cereals, and sweets. Children eating vegetables first at a meal more was associated with higher total intake of vegetables compared with children who did not eat vegetables first, among Japanese preschool children.

Low vegetable intake is associated with higher incidence of noncommunicable diseases. Data on global vegetable intake excluding legumes and potatoes is currently lacking. A systematic review following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines was conducted to assess vegetable consumption and supply in adult populations and to compare these data to the existing recommendations (≥240 g/day according to World Health Organization). For vegetable intake data online, websites of government institutions and health authorities, European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) Comprehensive European Food Consumption Database, STEPwise approach to surveillance (STEPS) and Pubmed/Medline databases were searched from March 2018 to June 2019. Vegetable supply data was extracted from Food Balance Sheets, Food and Agriculture Organization Corporate Statistical Database (FAOSTAT), 2013. Vegetable intake was expressed as means and 95% confidence intervals. Data were summarized for each region by calculating weighted means. Vegetable intake and supply data were available for 162 and 136 countries, respectively. Weighted mean vegetable intake was 186 g/day (56–349 g/day). Weighted mean vegetable supply was 431 g/day (71–882 g/day). For 88% of the countries vegetable intake was below the recommendations. Public health campaigns are required to encourage vegetable consumption worldwide. In the 61% of the countries where vegetable supply is currently insufficient to meet the recommendations, innovative food system approaches to improve yields and decrease post-harvest losses are imperative.

Good Affordable Food (GAF) is a small-group nutrition education intervention for adults with low socioeconomic status and small incomes. It aims to empower participants to save money on groceries and consume healthier diets. This paper reports the short-term and longer-term effects on behavioural determinants and self-reported behavioural changes. A quasi-experimental control group design was applied with a baseline measurement, a post-test immediately after the intervention, and a follow-up measurement after six months. The study included 237 participants (intervention group: n = 131, control group: n = 106) at baseline, 197 at post-test, and 152 at follow-up. Data were collected by telephone, mostly using closed interview questions. Positive short-term and longer-term effects were found for attitude towards the costs of healthy foods, food label use, and the use of liquid butter or oil to prepare hot meals. Short-term intervention effects related to knowledge towards saving money on groceries, self-efficacy towards healthy eating, portion size awareness, and mindful eating. GAF was effective in changing some determinants and behaviours related to cost and food consumption, however, mostly in the short term. Thereby, it is an example of combining pricing and health information in nutrition education that developers of effective nutrition education for low-income groups can build on.

Compared to other food groups, vegetable intakes are lowest relative to recommendations. Breastfeeding and initial introduction to vegetables may help infants establish long-lasting taste preferences. We examined the relationship between breastfeeding and initial vegetable introduction and vegetable intake in early childhood (ages 13–60 months). This repeated cross-sectional study used data from the national WIC Infant and Toddler Feeding Practices Study-2 collected from low-income mother/caregivers about infants from around birth through age 5 (60 months; n = 3773). Survey-weighted adjusted regression models assessed associations between breastfeeding and vegetable introduction measures with vegetable consumption at child ages 13, 24, 36, 48, and 60 months. Longer breastfeeding duration was associated with a slightly, but significantly, greater variety of vegetables consumed/day in early childhood. There was also a small but positive statistically significant association between the number of different types of vegetables consumed on a given day at 9 months and the amount and variety of vegetables consumed/day in early childhood. Age of initial vegetables introduction and whether vegetables were the first/second food introduced were not consistently related to the amount or variety of vegetables consumed later in childhood. Longer breastfeeding and introduction to a greater variety of vegetables at 9 months may be behaviors to target to increase consumption of a greater variety of vegetables by young children.

Background Studies investigating dietary resemblance between parents and their children have gained mixed results, and the resemblance seems to vary across nutrients, foods, dietary-assessment tools used, and parent-child pairs. We investigated parent-child dietary resemblance using a novel approach in applying statistical analysis, which allowed the comparison of ‘whole-diet’ between parents and their children. Additionally, we sought to establish whether sociodemographic factors or family meals were associated with dietary resemblance and whether parent-child dietary resemblance was dependent on the parent providing food consumption data on behalf of the child (father or mother, “the respondent”). Methods The DAGIS study investigated health behaviors among Finnish preschoolers using a cross-sectional design. One parent filled in a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) measuring the child’s food consumption outside preschool hours during the last week. In addition, we instructed both parents or legal guardians, should the child have two, to fill in a similar FFQ regarding their own food use. Parents also reported their educational level, the number of children living in the same household, and the number of family meals. As a measure of dietary resemblance between a parent and a child, we computed Spearman correlations ranging mostly from no resemblance (0) to complete resemblance (+ 1) between parent-child pairs over the ‘whole-diet’ (excluding preschool hours). These resemblance measures were further investigated using linear mixed models. Results We obtained 665 father-child and 798 mother-child resemblance measures. Although regular intake of fruits and vegetables has an essential role in a healthy diet and well-being, a majority of consumers in Serbia have a suboptimal intake of these groceries. To understand the main determinants of this unsatisfactory situation, the study tested an extended model of the theory of planned behavior intending to suggest necessary steps for improving fruits and vegetables daily intake. This theory, extended for the role of knowledge, was tested using structural equation modeling. Fit indices confirmed the utility of this extended model of the theory of planned behavior in explaining consumers' behavior as well as the mediating role of behavioral intentions. Serbia, as one of the central developing countries in the Balkans, was chosen to test the model with the possibility of applying it to other developing countries facing malnutrition. Data were collected in North Serbia, through an online survey (n=688). Despite consumers' high awareness of fruits and vegetables' beneficial health effects, the influence of consumers' knowledge only is not sufficient to trigger behavioral changes. Consumers' intentions and behavior should be influenced indirectly, by changing their attitudes and subjective norms. All custom-made activities promoting a higher fruit and vegetable intake should consider the present findings to achieve a bigger effect on behavioral changes among consumers.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of a role modelling intervention on children’s intake of a familiar vegetable. Ninety nine 4–6-year-old children participated at school in a between-subject experiment with three conditions. Two popular Dutch TV idols acted as enthusiastic role models in a video film that was specifically designed for this study. In the convivial eating (CE) condition, children ate raw carrots while they watched the role modelling video for eight sessions (2x/week). Children in the positive restriction and convivial eating (PR + CE) condition were – prior to eight convivial eating sessions – involved in five sessions where they watched the video without eating carrots themselves. The control group ate carrots twice only, and never watched the role modelling video. The main outcome was vegetable intake. Information on demographics and child eating characteristics was collected via a parental questionnaire. A longer-term follow-up was executed at nine months (N = 93). Children’s average carrot intake was 22 ± 24 g per intervention session. There was no increased intake directly after the intervention, but carrot intake in both intervention groups (CE: 45 g; PR + CE: 52 g) was 20–30 g higher at nine months (p < 0.01), whereas intake remained stable for the control group (p = 0.31). About 40% of all children consistently ate (almost) no carrots; higher fussiness and neophobia, and lower vegetable liking typified these non-eaters. So, although the intervention did not immediately increase children’s vegetable intake, it was associated with a higher intake at follow-up. The high numbers of non-eaters points to the need for tailored interventions that encourage non-eaters to consume relatively familiar – but previously rejected – vegetables.

Background : Adolescence is the transition from child to adulthood. Adolescents usually change their lifestyle , includes consumption patterns , because it is influenced by peers ’ environment . Adolescent s nutritional needs are relatively large because of rapid growth and development process. One of the nutrition problems among adolescents is the lack of fruit and vegetable consumption that is i nfluenced by internal and external factors. Objective : The purpose of this research was to know the relationship between attitude, nutrition knowledge, food preference, food availability, media exposure, and parents income with fruit and vegetable consumption behavior among SMPK 1 Harapan students . Method s : T his study u sed cross sectional design and was conducted on April-May 2017 . Subjects of this study were 85 grade VIII students selected by using simple random sampling. Information on a ttitude, nutrition knowledge, food preference, food availability, media exposure, and parent s’ income were collected using questionnaire, while fruit and vegetables consumption behaviour were collected using semi quantitative food frequency questionnaire (SQ-FFQ). Result s : The results of this study showed that most subjects has good fruit and vegetables consumption behavior ( 71.8% ) . There was a significant correlation between fruit and vegetables consumption behaviour with attitude (p < 0,0 1 ), nutrition knowledge (p < 0.0 1 ), food availability (p < 0. 01 ), media exposure (p < 0.01), and parent s income (p < 0.0 1 ), but not related with food preference (p = 0.5 5 ) . Conclusion :This study indicat ed a significant relationship between attitude, nutritional knowledge, food availability, media exposure, and parent s income with fruits and vegetables consumption behaviour.

People are increasingly aware of the positive effects of a healthy diet. Concurrently, daily food consumption decisions choices about both the quality and quantity of food that is ingested are steered more by what consumers consider healthy. Despite the increased aim to eat healthier, however, consumers often do not read or incorrectly interpret on-pack nutrition information, resulting in suboptimal food choices in terms of health. This study aims to unravel the determinants of such inadvertent food choices from these consumers. In an online process-tracking study, we measured the actual usage of available back-of-pack nutrition information during substitutive food choices made by 240 participants who had the intention to eat healthy. Using mouse-tracking software in a computerized task in which participants had to make dichotomous food choices (e.g., coconut oil or olive oil for baking), we measured the frequency and time of nutritional information considered. Combined with demographic and psychosocial data, including information on the level of intention, action planning, self-efficacy, and nutrition literacy, we were able to model the determinants of inadvertent unhealthy substitutive food choices in a sequential multiple regression (R-2 = 0.40). In these consumers who intended to eat healthy, the quantity of obtained nutrition information significantly contributed as an associative factor of the percentage of healthy food choices made. Moreover, the level of correct answers in a nutrition literacy test, as well as taste preferences, significantly predicted the percentage of healthier choices. We discuss that common psychosocial determinants of healthy behavior, such as intention, action planning, and self efficacy,, need to be augmented with a person's actual reading and understanding of nutrition information to better explain the variance in healthy food choice behavior. Highlights • There is research gap regarding how mental growth and brain maturation may impact on vegetable consumption. • We have identified particular brain maturation and mental growth patterns that may affect child vegetable consumption. • Both of these developmental patterns partially match with the Piagetian theory of development. • We have identified a series of potential modulating factors. • The 3–4 and 4−5 age ranges might potential sensitive periods for acquisition of brand knowledge of foods and health-related abstract concepts., Relatively little is known about how mental development during childhood parallels brain maturation, and how these processes may have an impact on changes in eating behavior: in particular in vegetable consumption. This review aims to bridge this research gap by integrating both recent findings from the study on brain maturation with recent results from research on cognitive development. Developmental human neuroscientific research in the field of the sensory systems and on the relationship between children’s cognitive development and vegetable consumption serve as benchmarks. We have identified brain maturation and mental growth patterns that may affect child vegetable consumption and conclude that both of these developmental patterns partially match with the Piagetian theory of development. Additionally, we conclude that a series of potential modulating factors, such as learning-related experiences, may lead to fluctuations in the course of those particular developmental patterns, and thus vegetable consumption patterns. Therefore, we propose a theoretical predictive model of child vegetable consumption in which the nature of the relationship between its correlational and/or causal components should be studied in the future by adopting an integral research perspective of the three targeted study levels: brain, cognition and behavior.

The school food environment plays a role in adolescents&rsquo, dietary behaviors. In this study, adolescents&rsquo, food purchasing patterns in and around school and its potential relationship with perceived maternal relationship support and maternal monitoring were examined. Data were collected in The Netherlands in 2017. A total of 726 adolescents (45.8% boys, Mage = 13.78 &plusmn, 0.49) and 713 mothers (Mage = 45.05 &plusmn, 4.45) participated. Adolescents&rsquo, frequency of bringing and purchasing foods was assessed via a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). Relationship support and monitoring were measured via self-report questionnaires. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) was conducted to examine associations between adolescents&rsquo, food purchasing patterns, relationship support, and monitoring. Results indicated that adolescents brought food and drinks mostly from home, and infrequently purchased these products in and around school. Yet, differences exist between subgroups of adolescents. Relationship support was positively associated with bringing fruit, vegetables and salad and negatively associated with purchasing sweet snacks. No associations were found for monitoring. These findings indicate that family-home determinants of healthy and unhealthy eating are important factors to consider when examining the impact of the school food environment on adolescents&rsquo, food purchasing patterns. This has implications for policy makers who aim to develop and implement measures to improve adolescents&rsquo, eating in and around school.

BackgroundIt currently remains understudied whether low consumption of fruits and vegetables after kidney transplantation may be a modifiable cardiovascular risk factor. We aimed to investigate the associations between consumption of fruits and vegetables and cardiovascular mortality in renal transplant recipients (RTRs).MethodsConsumption of fruits and vegetables was assessed in an extensively phenotyping cohort of RTRs. Multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazards regression analyses were performed to assess the risk of cardiovascular mortality.ResultsWe included 400 RTRs (age 52 ± 12 years, 54% males). At a median follow-up of 7.2 years, 23% of RTRs died (53% were due to cardiovascular causes). Overall, fruit consumption was not associated with cardiovascular mortality {hazard ratio [HR] 0.82 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.60–1.14]; P = 0.24}, whereas vegetable consumption was inversely associated with cardiovascular mortality [HR 0.49 (95% CI 0.34–0.71); P < 0.001]. This association remained independent of adjustment for several potential confounders. The association of fruit consumption with cardiovascular mortality was significantly modified by estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR; Pinteraction = 0.01) and proteinuria (Pinteraction = 0.01), with significant inverse associations in patients with eGFR > 45 mL/min/1.73 m2 [HR 0.56 (95% CI 0.35–0.92); P = 0.02] or the absence of proteinuria [HR 0.62 (95% CI 0.41–0.92); P = 0.02].ConclusionsIn RTRs, a relatively higher vegetable consumption is independently and strongly associated with lower cardiovascular mortality. A relatively higher fruit consumption is also associated with lower cardiovascular mortality, although particularly in RTRs with eGFR > 45 mL/min/1.73 m2 or an absence of proteinuria. Further studies seem warranted to investigate whether increasing consumption of fruits and vegetables may open opportunities for potential interventional pathways to decrease the burden of cardiovascular mortality in RTRs.

Objective: To test the effects of a cooking program on healthy food decisions.Design: An experimental between-subjects design with 3 conditions: healthy, unhealthy, and control.Setting: Class settings in 5 different schools.Participants: One hundred twenty-five children between 10 and 12 years of age.Interventions: Video clips of cooking program containing healthy foods versus cooking program containing unhealthy foods versus control program.Main outcome measures: Healthy versus unhealthy food choice.Analysis: Logistic regression analysis, with the control condition as a reference in the first contrast test and the unhealthy food condition as a reference in the second contrast, to examine effects on food choice between conditions.Results: Children who watched the cooking program with healthy foods had a higher probability of selecting healthy food than children who watched the cooking program with unhealthy foods (P = .027), or with the control condition (P = .039).Conclusions and Implications: These findings indicated a priming effect of the foods the children were exposed to, showing that nutrition education guided by reactivity theory can be promising. Cooking pro- grams may affect the food choices of children and could be an effective method in combination with other methods to improve their dietary intake.

Objective: this paper introduces a novel method to evaluate the local impact of behavioral scenarios on disease prevalence and burden with representative individual level data while ensuring that the model is in agreement with the qualitative patterns of global relative risk (RR) estimates. The method is used to estimate the impact of behavioral scenarios on the burden of disease due to ischemic heart disease (IHD) and diabetes in the Turkish adult population. Methods: disease specific Hierarchical Bayes (HB) models estimate the individual disease probability as a function of behaviors, demographics, socio-economics and other controls, where constraints are specified based on the global RR estimates. The simulator combines the counterfactual disease probability estimates with disability adjusted life year (DALY)-per-prevalent-case estimates and rolls up to the targeted population level, thus reflecting the local joint distribution of exposures. The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2016 study meta-analysis results guide the analysis of the Turkish National Health Surveys (2008 to 2016) that contain more than 90 thousand observations. Findings: the proposed Qualitative Informative HB models do not sacrifice predictive accuracy versus benchmarks (logistic regression and HB models with non-informative and numerical informative priors) while agreeing with the global patterns. In the Turkish adult population, Increasing Physical Activity reduces the DALYs substantially for both IHD by 8.6% (6.4% 11.2%), and Diabetes by 8.1% (5.8% 10.6%), (90% uncertainty intervals). Eliminating Smoking and Second-hand Smoke predominantly decreases the IHD burden 13.1% (10.4% 15.8%) versus Diabetes 2.8% (1.1% 4.6%). Increasing Fruit and Vegetable Consumption, on the other hand, reduces IHD DALYs by 4.1% (2.8% 5.4%) while not improving the Diabetes burden 0.1% (0% 0.1%). Conclusion: while the national RR estimates are in qualitative agreement with the global patterns, the scenario impact estimates are markedly different than the attributable risk estimates from the GBD analysis and allow evaluation of practical scenarios with multiple behaviors., NA

This study investigated parental influences on preschool children’s healthy and unhealthy snacking in relation to child obesity in a large cross-sectional multinational sample. Parents and 3–5 year-old child dyads (n = 5185) in a kindergarten-based study provided extensive sociodemographic, dietary practice and food intake data. Parental feeding practices that were derived from questionnaires were examined for associations with child healthy and unhealthy snacking in adjusted multilevel models, including child estimated energy expenditure, parental education, and nutritional knowledge. Parental healthy and unhealthy snacking was respectively associated with their children’s snacking (both p &lt, 0.0001). Making healthy snacks available to their children was specifically associated with greater child healthy snack intake (p &lt, 0.0001). Conversely, practices that were related to unhealthy snacking, i.e., being permissive about unhealthy snacking and acceding to child demands for unhealthy snacks, were associated with greater consumption of unhealthy snacks by children, but also less intake of healthy snacks (all p &lt, 0.0001). Parents having more education and greater nutritional knowledge of snack food recommendations had children who ate more healthy snacks (all p &lt, 0.0001) and fewer unhealthy snacks (p = 0.002, p &lt, 0.0001, respectively). In the adjusted models, child obesity was not related to healthy or unhealthy snack intake in these young children. The findings support interventions that address parental practices and distinguish between healthy and unhealthy snacking to influence young children’s dietary patterns.

With the aim of increasing their vegetable intake at home, we held a quiz & stamp rally for children to learn about vegetable nutrition while enjoying answering quizzes and collecting original vegetable character stamps during a food education event in a community. We also conducted a questionnaire survey, involving parents of 83 children （aged 2-12 years） who participated in the rally, to examine the vegetable intake of these children.For the question , 50.6% of all parents chose , which was the highest rate. The rate of choosing < Inadequate > was 27.2%. For , the majority of the parents chose , at 49.4%, and the rate of choosing was 27.2%, revealing a variation in parental recognition between dietary and vegetable intakes. On comparing answers to between parents of younger children （aged 2-6: younger group） and those of older children （7-12: older group）, achieved the highest rate, at 58.9%, in the younger group, while it was 26.9% in the older group, revealing a difference （p=0.007）. achieved 7.1 and 26.9% in the younger and older groups, respectively, revealing a difference （p=0.014）. On the other hand, the rate of choosing exceeded 25% in both cases; 33.9 and 26.9% in the younger and older groups, respectively. and achieved approximately 20% in both groups. Low fruit and vegetable consumption is associated with poor outcomes after renal transplantation. Insufficient fruit and vegetable consumption is reported in the majority of renal transplant recipients (RTR). The aim of this study was to identify barriers and facilitators of fruit and vegetable consumption after renal transplantation and explore if certain barriers and facilitators were transplant-related. After purposive sampling, RTR (n = 19), their family members (n = 15) and healthcare professionals (n = 5) from a Dutch transplant center participated in seven focus group discussions (three each for RTR and family members, one with healthcare professionals). Transcripts were analyzed using social cognitive theory as conceptual framework and content analysis was used for identification of themes. Transplant-related barriers and facilitators were described separately. In categorizing barriers and facilitators, four transplant-related themes were identified: transition in diet (accompanied by, e.g., fear or difficulties with new routine), physical health (e.g., recovery of uremic symptoms), medication (e.g., cravings by prednisolone) and competing priorities after transplantation (e.g., social participation activities). Among the generic personal and environmental barriers and facilitators, food literacy and social support were most relevant. In conclusion, transplant-related and generic barriers and facilitators were identified for fruit and vegetable consumption in RTR. The barriers that accompany the dietary transition after renal transplantation may contribute to the generally poorer fruit and vegetable consumption of RTR. These findings can be used for the development of additional nutritional counseling strategies in renal transplant care.

The aim of this study was to establish elements to understand the consumers reasons to increase the quantities of fresh vegetables consumed in the Caribbean Region of Colombia. With information from 308 surveys applied randomly in seven cities of the Caribbean Region and using a structured survey that included variables such as age, family composition, prices, income, a Logit econometric model was formulated. Furthermore, with the contingent valuation method, parameters were estimated using maximum likelihood; moreover, the reasons that explain the possibility that families increase vegetable consumption were identified. Results allow us to appreciate first that 53 % of the surveyed respondents would be willing to increase consumption. The variable that explains mostly an increase in consumption is scholarship with a positive value of 0.7667 with a direct relationship, with a significance of 0.005, i.e. with a higher the level of education, the probability of increasing consumption is also higher, presumably because the consumer has more information about the properties and advantages that vegetables have for health. These decisions are also influenced by vegetable prices and consumer age, but in an inverse relationship, i.e. at a higher price and age, less possibility of increasing consumption was observed. On the other hand, variables such as number of family members have a direct influence on decisions to increase vegetable consumption. Resumen El estudio se realizó en siete ciudades de la región Caribe de Colombia, incluyendo los departamentos Córdoba, Sucre, Bolívar, Atlántico, Magdalena, La Guajira y Cesar, con el objetivo de conocer los elementos que permiten entender las razones por las cuales los habitantes tienden a aumentar las cantidades consumidas de hortalizas frescas. Para ello, se analizó la información contenida en datos de 308 encuestas aplicadas al azar utilizando un sistema estructurado que incluía variables como edad, composición familiar, precios, e ingresos, en un modelo econométrico Logit. Además, con el método de valoración contingente se estimaron los parámetros de máxima verosimilitud, que permiten identificar las razones y la posibilidad de que las familias aumenten el consumo de hortalizas. Los resultados mostraron que, 53% de los encuestados están dispuestos a aumentar el consumo de hortalizas. El grado de escolaridad es la variable que en mayor grado explica el aumento del consumo, con un valor de 0.7667 (P < 0.05); por tanto, según el estudio, entre mayor es el nivel de escolaridad, mayor es la probabilidad de aumentar el consumo por habitante. Además del conocimiento de las ventajas de las hortalizas frescas para la salud, las decisiones de consumo son afectadas de manera inversa por los precios y la edad del consumidor; es decir, a mayor precio y mayor edad, menos posibilidad de aumentar el consumo. En cambio, las variables como el número de miembros de la familia influyen en forma directa en las decisiones de aumentar el consumo de las hortalizas.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to test whether the IKEA-effect (Norton et al., 2012) – better liking for self-crafted products than for identical products crafted by others – can be exploited to increase liking and consumption of vegetable snacks in children. Design/methodology/approach A between-subjects experiment was conducted at an after school care facility. In total, 86 children aged four to six either crafted a peacock with vegetables or with non-food objects following an example. After the task, children ate snack vegetables ad libitum, and rated their liking for the vegetables and pride in crafting the peacock. Findings No significant main effect of the vegetable snack creation on consumption and liking was observed. Also, perceived pride did not mediate the effect of self-crafting vegetable snacks on consumption of and liking for vegetables. Research limitations/implications Vegetable consumption did not differ between children who were either simply exposed to vegetable snacks while crafting or those who were crafting the vegetable snacks themselves. The equal consumption might suggest that this is caused by simple exposure, but more research is needed comparing self-crafting and exposure to a condition where there is no initial exposure to vegetables. Originality/value Although the IKEA-effect has been demonstrated in adults, this is one of the first studies evaluating the IKEA-effect in children and as a means to increase liking for a generally disliked product in this target group, i.e. vegetables. The IKEA-effect could not be replicated under these more stringent conditions, where the experimental set-up enabled disentangling exposure and crafting effects.

The aim of the study was to collect and analyse the frequency of fruit (fresh, dried, canned and nuts) and vegetable (fresh, tinned, legumes, soya) consumption in the group of 242 respondents aged 19 - 22 years-students of Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra; to evaluate differences according to field of study and language in which they study (Hungarian or Slovak) by questionnaire method. On the base of collected data it can be concluded that in general the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables can be considered as very low (only once aday) together with canned and dried fruit (nuts) and tinned vegetable (rarely). Furthermore, the majority of respondents took legumes only 1 - 3 times aweek or rarely and soya had never been consumed. The statistically significant differences between college students of PEEH and the rest of assayed group of students had not been confirmed so the higher level of knowledge in health has not been connected with the higher consumption of fruits and vegetables. This study aims to examine children&rsquo, s fruit, vegetable, and added sugar consumption relative to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the American Heart Association&rsquo, s recommendations, as well as to compare children&rsquo, s reported consumption with parental perception of the child&rsquo, s overall diet quality. Data were drawn from 2 independent, cross sectional panels (2009&ndash, 10 and 2014&ndash, 15) of the New Jersey Child Health Study. The analytical sample included 2229 households located in five New Jersey cities. Daily consumption of fruit (cups), vegetables (cups), and added sugars (teaspoons) for all children (3&ndash, 18 years old) were based on parent reports. Multivariate linear regression analyses estimated children&rsquo, s adjusted fruit, vegetable, and added sugar consumption across parents&rsquo, perception categories (Disagree, Somewhat Agree, and Strongly Agree that their child eats healthy). Although only a small proportion of children meet recommendations, the majority of parents strongly agreed that their child ate healthy. Nonetheless, significant differences, in the expected direction, were observed in vegetable and fruit consumption (but not sugar) across parental perceptional categories for most age/sex groups. Dietary interventions tailored to parents should include specific quantity and serving-size information for fruit and vegetable recommendations, based on their child&rsquo, s age/sex, and highlight sources of added sugar and their sugar content.
