Abstract: Production of $d$, $t$, and $^3$He nuclei in central Pb+Pb interactions was studied at five collision energies ($\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 6.3, 7.6, 8.8, 12.3, and 17.3 GeV) with the NA49 detector at the CERN SPS. Transverse momentum spectra, rapidity distributions, and particle ratios were measured. Yields are compared to predictions of statistical models. Phase-space distributions of light nuclei are discussed and compared to those of protons in the context of a coalescence approach. Abstract: We look for fluctuations expected for the QCD critical point using an intermittency analysis in the transverse momentum phase space of protons produced around midrapidity in the 12.5 % most central C+C, Si+Si and Pb+Pb collisions at the maximum SPS energy of 158A GeV. We find evidence of power-law fluctuations for the Si+Si data. The fitted power-law exponent Φ[subscript 2] = 0.96[superscript +0.38][subscript -0.25] (stat.) ± 0.16 (syst.) is consistent with the value expected for critical fluctuations. Power-law fluctuations had previously also been observed in low-mass π[superscript +] π[superscript 1-] pairs in the same Si+Si collisions., United States. Abstract: Results from the NA49 experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) are presented on event-by-event transverse momentum and multiplicity fluctuations of charged particles, produced at forward rapidities in central Pb+Pb interactions at beam momenta 20A, 30A, 40A, 80A, and 158A GeV/c, as well as in systems of different sizes (p+p, C+C, Si+Si, and Pb+Pb) at 158A GeV/c. This publication extends the previous NA49 measurements of the strongly intensive measure ΦpT by a study of the recently proposed strongly intensive measures of fluctuations Δ[PT,N] and Σ[PT,N]. In the explored kinematic region transverse momentum and multiplicity fluctuations show no significant energy dependence in the SPS energy range. However, a remarkable system size dependence is observed for both Δ[PT,N] and Σ[PT,N], with the largest values measured in peripheral Pb+Pb interactions. The results are compared with NA61/SHINE (SPS Heavy Ion and Neutrino Experiment) measurements in p+p collisions, as well as with predictions of The Ultrarelativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics and EPOS models. © 2015 American Physical Society.

Abstract: A novel approach, the identity method, was used for particle identification and the study of fluctuations of particle yield ratios in Pb + Pb collisions at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). This procedure allows one to measure the moments of the multiplicity distributions of protons (p), kaons (K), pions (π), and electrons (e) in case of incomplete particle identification. Using these moments the excitation function of the fluctuation measure νdyn[A,B] was measured, with A and B denoting different particle types. The obtained energy dependence of νdyn agrees with previously published NA49 results on the related measure σdyn. However, νdyn[K,p] and νdyn[K,π] were found to depend on the phase-space coverage. This feature most likely explains the reported differences between measurements of NA49 and those of STAR in central Au + Au collisions. © 2014 American Physical Society.

Abstract: New measurements by the NA49 experiment of the centrality dependence of event-by-event fluctuations of the particle yield ratios (K++K -)/(π++π-), (p+p̄) /(π++π-), and (K++K-)/ (p+p̄) are presented for Pb+Pb collisions at 158A GeV. The absolute values of the dynamical fluctuations of these ratios, quantified by the measure σdyn, increase by about a factor of two from central to semiperipheral collisions. Multiplicity scaling scenarios are tested and found to apply for both the centrality and the previously published energy dependence of the (K++K-)/(π++π-) and (p+p̄)/(π++π-) ratio fluctuations. A description of the centrality and energy dependence of (K++K -)/(p+p̄) ratio fluctuations by a common scaling prescription is not possible since there is a sign change in the energy dependence. © 2013 American Physical Society.

Abstract: The NA49 results on hadron production obtained in PbPb collisions at SPS energies from 20 to 158 A GeV are shown and discussed as evidence for the onset of deconfinement. The primary measures are the pion yield, the kaon-to-pion ratio and the slope parameter of transverse mass distributions. The possible indication of the QCD critical point signatures was investigated in the event-by-event fluctuations of various observables such as the mean transverse momentum, particle multiplicity and azimuthal angle distributions as well as in the particle ratio fluctuations. The energy dependence of these observables was measured in central PbPb collisions in the full SPS energy range while for analysis of the system size dependence data from pp, CC, SiSi, and PbPb collisions at the top SPS energy were used. © 2012 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

12. Effect of diet on lipid content and fatty acid profile of common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.)

Abstract: Production of fish in Serbia is insufficient despite of favorable climate properties. Dominant form of national aquaculture system is semi-intensive carp breeding. Except cereals, in the recent years extruded and pelleted feed are increasingly used for carp nutrition in Serbia. The aim of this study was to compare the lipid content and the fatty acid (FA) profile of carp (Cyprinus carpio) raised in carp fish farms with traditional breeding technology based on maize as well as complete extruded feed. Total lipids of fish fillets were extracted by accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) and FA profile was determined by gas-liquid chromatography equipped with flame ionization detector. Results were compared by multivariate data analysis. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of the total FA profile clearly differentiated carp according to diet. Carp fed maize contained higher amount of total lipids (8.59%) compared to carp fed extruded feed (4.71%). Content of saturated fatty acids (SFA) of two groups of carp was similar. Carp fed extruded feed had lower content of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) (42.43%) and higher content of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) (32.56%) than carp fed maize (61.78%, 12.99%, respectively). A higher content of n-6 (27.99%) and n-3 (4.57%) PUFA as well as better n-3/n-6 PUFA ratio (0.16) were found in carp fed extruded feed than in carp fed maize (11.75%, 1.24%, 0.10, respectively). Obtained results reveal that diet significantly influence the quality of carp flesh. Lipid content significantly decrease and PUFA content as well as n-3 to n-6 ratio increase when using extruded feed.

Abstract: Measurements of charged pion and kaon production are presented in centrality selected Pb+Pb collisions at 40A GeV and 158A GeV beam energy as well as in semicentral C+C and Si+Si interactions at 40A GeV. Transverse mass spectra, rapidity spectra, and total yields are determined as a function of centrality. The system-size and centrality dependence of relative strangeness production in nucleus-nucleus collisions at 40A GeV and 158A GeV beam energy are derived from the data presented here and from published data for C+C and Si+Si collisions at 158A GeV beam energy. At both energies a steep increase with centrality is observed for small systems followed by a weak rise or even saturation for higher centralities. This behavior is compared to calculations using transport models (ultra-relativistic quantum molecular dynamics and hadron-string dynamics), a percolation model, and the core-corona approach. © 2012 American Physical Society.

Abstract: Production of the K*(892)0 and K*(892)0 resonances was studied via their K+π- and K-π+ decay modes in central Pb+Pb, Si+Si, C+C, and inelastic p+p collisions at 158A GeV(√sNN=17.3 GeV) with the NA49 detector at the CERN SPS. Transverse momentum and rapidity distributions were measured and total yields were estimated. The yield of K* exceeds that of K * by about a factor of two in nucleus-nucleus reactions. The total yield ratios K*/+ and * / - are strongly suppressed in central Pb+Pb compared to p+p, C+C, and Si+Si collisions, in agreement with the expected attenuation of these short-lived resonance states in the hadronic phase of the expanding fireball. The UrQMD model, although incorporating such a scenario, does not provide a quantitative description of the experimental results. The statistical hadron gas model assuming the same freeze-out parameters for stable hadrons and resonances overestimates the * / ratios in central Pb+Pb collisions by about a factor of 2.5. © 2011 American Physical Society.

Abstract: Pion production in nuclear collisions at the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) is investigated with the aim to search, in a restricted domain of the phase diagram, for power laws in the behavior of correlations that are compatible with critical QCD. We analyzed interactions of nuclei of different sizes (p+p, C+C, Si+Si, Pb+Pb) at 158A GeV adopting, as appropriate observables, scaled factorial moments in a search for intermittent fluctuations in transverse dimensions. The analysis is performed for π+π- pairs with an invariant mass very close to the two-pion threshold. In this sector one may capture critical fluctuations of the sigma component in a hadronic medium, even if the σ meson has no well-defined vacuum state. It turns out that for the Pb+Pb system the proposed analysis technique cannot be applied without entering the invariant mass region with strong Coulomb correlations. As a result the treatment becomes inconclusive in this case. Our results for the other systems indicate the presence of power-law fluctuations in the freeze-out state of Si+Si approaching in size the prediction of critical QCD. © 2010 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: New data on the production of protons, anti-protons and neutrons in p+p interactions are presented. The data come from a sample of 4.8 million inelastic events obtained with the NA49 detector at the CERN SPS at 158 GeV/c beam momentum. The charged baryons are identified by energy loss measurement in a large TPC tracking system. Neutrons are detected in a forward hadronic calorimeter. Inclusive invariant cross sections are obtained in intervals from 0 to 1.9 GeV/c (0 to 1.5 GeV/c) in transverse momentum and from -0.05 to 0.95 (-0.05 to 0.4) in Feynman x for protons (anti-protons), respectively. pT integrated neutron cross sections are given in the interval from 0.1 to 0.9 in Feynman x. The data are compared to a wide sample of existing results in the SPS and ISR energy ranges as well as to proton and neutron measurements from HERA and RHIC., 69 pages, 72 figures

Transverse mass spectra, rapidity spectra, and multiplicities in dependence of the system size are discussed. Comparisons to transport models (ultrarelativistic quantum molecular dynamics and hadron string dynamics) and to the core-corona approach are performed. Although Λ and Λ̄ production can be described by transport models reasonably well, these models do not agree with the Ξ- measurements. However, the core-corona picture fits very well the system-size dependence of Λ and Ξ-, whereas it agrees less well with the Λ̄ data. © 2009 The American Physical Society.

The particle ratio fluctuations were obtained for central Pb+Pb collisions at five collision energies, sNN, between 6.3 and 17.3 GeV. After accounting for the effects of finite-number statistics and detector resolution, we extract the strength of nonstatistical fluctuations at each energy. For the K/π ratio, larger fluctuations than expected for independent particle production are found at all collision energies. The fluctuations in the (p+p̄)/π ratio are smaller than expectations from independent particle production, indicating correlated pion and proton production from resonance decays. For both ratios, the deviation from purely statistical fluctuations shows an increase toward lower collision energies. The results are compared to transport model calculations, which fail to describe the energy dependence of the K/π ratio fluctuations. © 2009 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: Transverse momentum spectra up to 4.5 GeV/c around midrapidity of pi+-, p, anti-p, and K+- in Pb+Pb reactions were measured at sqrt(sNN)=17.3 GeV by the CERN-NA49 experiment. The nuclear modification factors RAA for pi+- and RCP for pi+-, p, anti-p, K+- were extracted and compared with results obtained at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at sqrt(sNN)=200 GeV. The modification factor RAA shows a rapid increase with transverse momentum in the covered region. This indicates that the Cronin effect is the dominating effect in our energy range. The modification factor RCP, in which the contribution of the Cronin effect is reduced, shows a saturation well below unity in the pi+- channel. The extracted RCP values follow the 200 GeV RHIC results closely in the available transverse momentum range, except for pi+- above 2.5 GeV/c transverse momentum. There the measured suppression is smaller than that observed at RHIC.

Abstract: Results on charged pion and kaon production in central Pb+Pb collisions at 20A and 30A GeV are presented and compared to data at lower and higher energies. Around 30A GeV a rapid change of the energy dependence for the yields of pions and kaons as well as for the shape of the transverse mass spectra is observed. The change is compatible with the prediction that the threshold for production of a state of deconfined matter at the early stage of the collisions is located at low CERN Super Proton Synchroton energies.

Abstract: Measurements of Bose-Einstein correlations of pi-pi- pairs in central Pb+Pb collisions were performed with the NA49 detector at the CERN Super Proton Synchroton for beam energies of 20A, 30A, 40A, 80A, and 158A GeV. Correlation functions were measured in the longitudinally co-moving ``out-side-long'' reference frame as a function of rapidity and transverse momentum in the forward hemisphere of the reaction. Radius and correlation strength parameters were obtained from fits of a Gaussian parametrization. The results show a decrease of the radius parameters with increasing transverse momentum characteristic of strong radial flow in the pion source. No striking dependence on pion-pair rapidity or beam energy is observed. Static and dynamic properties of the pion source are obtained from simultaneous fits with a blast-wave model to radius parameters and midrapidity transverse momentum spectra. Predictions of hydrodynamic and microscopic models of Pb+Pb collisions are discussed.

Abstract: The NA49 experiment has collected comprehensive data on particle production in nucleus-nucleus collisions over the whole SPS beam energies range, the critical energy domain where the expected phase transition to a deconfined phase is expected to occur. The latest results from Pb+Pb collisions between 20$A$ GeV and 158$A$ GeV on baryon stopping and light nuclei production as well as those for strange hyperons are presented. The measured data on $p$, $\bar{p}$, $\Lambda$, $\bar{\Lambda}$, $\Xi^-$ and $\bar{\Xi}^+$ production were used to evaluate the rapidity distributions of net-baryons at SPS energies and to compare with the results from the AGS and the RHIC for central Pb+Pb (Au+Au) collisions. The dependence of the yield ratios and the inverse slope parameter of the $m_t$ spectra on the collision energy and centrality, and the mass number of the produced nuclei $^3He$, $t$, $d$ and $\bar{d}$ are discussed within coalescence and statistical approaches. Analysis of the total multiplicity exhibits remarkable agreement between the measured yield for $^3He$ and those predicted by the statistical hadronization model. In addition, new results on $\Lambda$ and $\bar{\Lambda}$ as well as $\Xi^-$ production in minimum bias Pb+Pb reactions at 40$A$ GeV and 158$A$ GeV and central C+C, Si+Si and Pb+Pb collisions are presented. Abstract: The latest NA49 results on event-by-event transverse momentum fluctuations are presented for central Pb+Pb interactions over the whole SPS energy range (20A - 158A GeV). Two different methods are applied: evaluating the $\Phi_{p_{T}}$ fluctuation measure and studying two-particle transverse momentum correlations. The obtained results are compared to predictions of the UrQMD model. The results on the energy dependence are compared to the NA49 data on the system size dependence. Abstract: The production of charged pions in minimum bias p+C interactions is studied using a sample of 377000 inelastic events obtained with the NA49 detector at the CERN SPS at 158 GeV/c beam momentum. The data cover a phase space area ranging from 0 to 1.8 GeV/c in transverse momentum and from -0.1 to 0.5 in Feynman xF. Inclusive invariant cross sections are given on a grid of 270 bins per charge, thus offering for the first time a dense coverage of the projectile hemisphere and of the cross-over region into the target fragmentation zone. © 2007 Springer-Verlag.

29. Comparation of the muscle of the antioxidant defence enzymes in pigs and bulls

Abstract: Anti-oxidant defence (AD) system prevent oxidative cell damage through the coordinated expression of antioxidant defence enzymes. Main AD enzymes are: Mn SOD –mitochondrial manganese containing superoxide dismutase and CuZn-superoxide dismutase (SOD, EC 1.15.1.1), catalyses the dismutation of superoxide (O2.-) to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) which is then independently converted to water by catalase (CAT, EC 1.11.1.6) or by selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px, EC 1.11.1.9) (Chance at al., 1979). Glutathione reductase (GR, EC 1.6.4.2) catalyses the reduction of oxidised GSH back into GSH, the latter being the co-substrate of GSH-Px (Gul et al., 2000). An imbalance between oxidative stress and the cell’s anti-oxidant defence system may have adverse effects on cell membranes through the indiscriminate oxidation of susceptible molecules such as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), the main substrates for lipid peroxidation (Crastes de Paulet, 1987). Some investigators (de Haan et al., 1995; Percy et al., 1990) have suggested that the alteration in the SOD/GSHPx + CAT ratio correlate well with increases in lipid damage. Animals (pigs and bulls) have different lipid metabolism, different plasma lipid profiles and different erythrocyte anti-oxidant defence compositions, but have similar content of cholesterol in meat (Nikolić et al., 2006; Turubatović et al., 2006). Since mitochondrias are both the main source and the main target for ROS in skeletal muscle, the comparative study on specific mitochondrial antioxidative defence systems (e.g. mitochondrial superoxide dismutase) and citosolyc antioxidative defence enzymes in pigs and bulls is of particular interest. Therefore, the aim of the task was the comparative study on specific mitochondrial antioxidative defence systems (mitochondrial SOD) and citosolyc antioxidative defence enzymes (CAT, GSH-Px and GR) in the selected identical groups of beef and pork muscles ( thick flank, loin and neck). Abstract: Results from electric charge correlations studied with the Balance Function (BF) method in A+A collisions from 20A to 158A GeV are presented in two different rapidity intervals: In the midrapidity region we observe a decrease of the width of the BF distribution with increasing centrality of the collision, whereas this effect vanishes in the forward rapidity region. Results from the energy dependence study in central Pb+Pb collisions show that the narrowing of the BF expressed by the normalized width parameter W increases with energy toward the highest CERN Super Proton Synchrotron and BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider energies. Finally we compare our experimental data points with the predictions of several models. The hadronic string models Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics and Heavy Ion Jet INteraction Generator (HIJING) do not reproduce the observed narrowing of the BF. However, A MultiPhase Transport medel (AMPT), which contains a quark-parton transport phase before hadronization, can reproduce the narrowing of the BF's width with centrality. This confirms the proposed sensitivity of the BF analysis to the time of hadronization. © 2007 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: Transverse momentum spectra of pi+, pi-, p, anti-p, K+, K-, K0s and Lambda at midrapidity were measured at high pT in Pb+Pb collisions at 158 GeV/nucleon beam energy by the NA49 experiment. Particle yield ratios (p/pi, K/pi and Lambda/K0s) show an enhancement of the baryon/meson ratio for pT > 2 GeV/c. The nuclear modification factor R_CP is extracted and compared to RHIC measurement and pQCD clculations.

Abstract: An overview of results from the CERN experiment NA49 is presented with emphasis on most recent measurements. NA49 has systematically studied the dependence of hadron production on energy and system size or centrality. At top-SPS energy the detailed investigation of hadron production, now also extending to elliptic flow of Lambda-baryons and to identified particle yields at high p_t, shows that the created matter behaves in a similar manner as at RHIC energies. In the lower SPS energy range a distinct structure is observed in the energy dependence of the rate of strangeness production and in the slopes of p_t-spectra suggesting the onset of the creation of a deconfined phase of matter.

Abstract: This article is devoted to results on pion-pion -Bose-Einstein correlations in central Pb+Pb collisions measured by the NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS. Rapidity as well as transverse momentum dependences of the correlation lengths will be shown for collisions at 20A, 30A, 40A, 80A, and 158A GeV beam energy. Only a weak energy dependence of the radii is observed at SPS energies. The kt-dependence of the correlation lengths as well as the single particle mt-spectra will be compared to model calculations. The rapidity dependence is analysed in a range of 2.5 units of rapidity starting at the center of mass rapidity at each beam energy. Abstract: Results are presented on event-by-event electric charge fluctuations in central Pb+Pb collisions at 20A, 30A, 40A, 80A, and 158A GeV. The observed fluctuations are close to those expected for a gas of pions correlated by global charge conservation only. These fluctuations are considerably larger than those calculated for an ideal gas of deconfined quarks and gluons. The present measurements do not necessarily exclude reduced fluctuations from a quark-gluon plasma because these might be masked by contributions from resonance decays.

Abstract: Results are presented on event-by-event fluctuations in transverse momentum of charged particles, produced at forward rapidities in p+p, C+C, Si+Si, and Pb+Pb collisions at 158 AGeV. Three different characteristics are discussed: the average transverse momentum of the event, the ΦpT fluctuation measure, and two-particle transverse momentum correlations. In the kinematic region explored, the dynamical fluctuations are found to be small. However, a significant system size dependence of ΦpT is observed, with the largest value measured in peripheral Pb+Pb interactions. The data are compared with predictions of several models.

Abstract: The transverse mass [Formula Presented] distributions for deuterons and protons are measured in [Formula Presented] reactions near midrapidity and in the range [Formula Presented] for minimum bias collisions at [Formula Presented] and for central collisions at 40 and [Formula Presented] beam energies. The rapidity density [Formula Presented], inverse slope parameter [Formula Presented] and mean transverse mass [Formula Presented] derived from [Formula Presented] distributions as well as the coalescence parameter [Formula Presented] are studied as a function of the incident energy and the collision centrality. The deuteron [Formula Presented] spectra are significantly harder than those of protons, especially in central collisions. The coalescence factor [Formula Presented] shows three systematic trends. First, it decreases strongly with increasing centrality reflecting an enlargement of the deuteron coalescence volume in central [Formula Presented] collisions. Second, it increases with [Formula Presented]. Finally, [Formula Presented] shows an increase with decreasing incident beam energy even within the SPS energy range. The results are discussed and compared to the predictions of models that include the collective expansion of the source created in [Formula Presented] collisions. © 2004 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: The measurement of production of Lambda and Antilambda hyperons was taken in central Pb-Pb collisions at 40, 80, and 158A GeV beam energy on a fixed target. For all the three beam energies the transverse mass spectra and rapidity distributions are studied. By integrating the rapidity spectra with extrapolations into unmeasured regions, total multiplicities were obtained. The ratio of the three energies at midrapidity and in full phase space was also studied.

Abstract: Results of resonance searches in the [Formula presented], [Formula presented], [Formula presented], and [Formula presented] invariant mass spectra in proton-proton collisions at [Formula presented] are presented. Evidence is shown for the existence of a narrow [Formula presented] baryon resonance with mass of [Formula presented] and width below the detector resolution of about [Formula presented]. The significance is estimated to be above [Formula presented]. This state is a candidate for the hypothetical exotic [Formula presented] baryon with [Formula presented], [Formula presented], and a quark content of ([Formula presented]). At the same mass, a peak is observed in the [Formula presented] spectrum which is a candidate for the [Formula presented] member of this isospin quartet with a quark content of ([Formula presented]). Abstract: New results from the energy scan programme of NA49, in particular kaon production at 30 A GeV and φ production at 40 and 80 A GeV are presented. The K+/π+ ratio shows a pronounced maximum at 30 A GeV; the kaon slope parameters are constant at SPS energies. Both findings support the scenario of a phase transition at about 30 A GeV beam energy. The φ/π ratio increases smoothly with beam energy, showing an energy dependence similar to K-/π- . The measured particle yields can be reproduced by a hadron gas model, with chemical freeze-out parameters on a smooth curve in the T-μB plane. The transverse spectra can be understood as resulting from a rapidly expanding, locally equilibrated source. No evidence for an earlier kinetic decoupling of heavy hyperons is found.

Abstract: Rapidity distributions for Λ and Λ hyperons in central Pb-Pb collisions at 40, 80 and 158 A·GeV and for Ks0 mesons at 158 A·GeV are presented. The lambda multiplicities are studied as a function of collision energy together with AGS and RHIC measurements and compared to model predictions. A different energy dependence of the Λ/π and Λ̄/π is observed. The Λ̄/Λ ratio shows a steep increase with collision energy. Evidence for a Λ̄/p̄ ratio greater than 1 is found at 40 A·GeV. © 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: Experiment NA49 at the Cern SPS has performed large acceptance measurements of hadron production in pp, pPb, CC, SiSi and PbPb collisions at 40 and 158 A · GeV beam energies. These data allowed a study of particle yields, spectra and correlations as well as event-by-event fluctuations of average event properties of the created hadron system. Results from central PbPb collisions are consistent with the onset of deconfinement during the early stage of the reaction in the lower SPS energy range. A new scaling property of particle production ratios was found which relates collision systems of different size and centrality. Systematics of the evolution of particle production from pp via pPb to PbPb collisions were investigated.

Abstract: In this paper we present recent results from the NA49 experiment for Λ and Λ̄ hyperons produced in central Pb + Pb collisions at 40, 80 and 158 A GeV. Transverse mass spectra and rapidity distributions for Λ are shown for all three energies. The shape of the rapidity distribution becomes flatter with increasing beam energy. The multiplicities at mid-rapidity as well as the total yields are studied as a function of collision energy including AGS measurements. The ratio Λ/π at mid-rapidity and in 4π has a maximum around 40 A GeV, In addition, Λ̄ rapidity distributions have been measured at 40 and 80 A GeV, which allows us to study the Λ̄/Λ ratio.

Abstract: Measurements of charged pion and kaon production in central Pb+Pb collisions at 40, 80, and 158 A GeV are presented. These are compared with data at lower and higher energies as well as with results from p+p interactions. The mean pion multiplicity per wounded nucleon increases approximately linearly with sNN1/4 with a change of slope starting in the region 15-40 A GeV. The change from pion suppression with respect to p+p interactions, as observed at low collision energies, to pion enhancement at high energies occurs at about 40A GeV. A nonmonotonic energy dependence of the ratio of K+ to π+ yields is observed, with a maximum close to 40A GeV and an indication of a nearly constant value at higher energies. The measured dependences may be related to an increase of the entropy production and a decrease of the strangeness to entropy ratio in central Pb+Pb collisions in the low SPS energy range, which is consistent with the hypothesis that a transient state of deconfined matter is created above these energies. Other interpretations of the data are also discussed.

Abstract: Event-by-event measurement of particle ratios in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions was carried out. Using particle identification by dE/dx in the NA49 TPCs, the fluctuations in strangeness production were studied using the ratio of charged kaons to pions. No nonstatistical fluctuations were observed. Further, an upper limit of σ non-stat < 4.0% for fluctuations occurring in every event at the 3σ level was deduced.

Abstract: The NA49 large-acceptance hadron spectrometer has measured strange and multi-strange hadrons from Pb+Pb and p+p collisions at the CERN SPS. Preliminary results for the transverse mass and rapidity distributions for X and Xi^+ from central Pb+Pb collisions at 158 GeV c^-1 nudeon are presented. Fully integrated yields per event of 4.42+or-0.31 and 0.74+0.04 are found for Xi^- and Xi^+, respectively, leading to a 4 pi Xi^+ Xi^- ratio of 0.17+or-0.02. The ratio Xi^+ Xi^- at mid-rapidity is found to be 0.22+or-0.04, agreeing with previously published values. In addition, preliminary data on the Lambda (1520) and phi (1020) resonances are presented. The Lambda (1520) multiplicity for p+p collisions is found to be 0.012+or-0.003. No signal is observed for Pb+Pb collisions and a production upper limit of 1.36 Lambda (1520) per event indicates an apparent suppression when comparing with scaled p+p data. Integrated phi (1020) yields per event are found to be 7.6+or-1.1 for Pb+Pb and 0.012+or-0.0015 for p+p collisions. No significant shift or broadening of the phi (1020) invariant mass distribution is observed in central Pb+or-Pb collisions.

Abstract: Results on two-particle correlations, deuteron production, event anisotropy and event-by-event fluctuations of 〈pT〉 and K/π were obtained by the NA49 experiment in Pb+Pb collisions at 158 A·GeV beam energy. Abstract: Yields and phase space distributions of Phi mesons emitted from p+p (minimum bias trigger), p+Pb (at various centralities) and central Pb+Pb collisions are reported (E_beam=158AGeV). The decay Phi --> K+K was used for identification. The Phi/Pi ratio is found to increase by a factor of 3.0ą0.7 from inelastic p+p to central Pb+Pb. Significant enhancement in this ratio is also observed in subclasses of p+p events (characterized by high charged-particle multiplicity) as well as in the forward hemisphere of central p+Pb collisions. In Pb+Pb no shift or significant broadening of the Phi-peak is seen.
