The development of new functional materials is crucial for addressing global challenges such as clean energy or the discovery of new drugs and antibiotics. Functional material systems are typically composed of functional molecular building blocks, organized across multiple length scales in a hierarchical order. The large design space allows for precise tuning of properties to specific applications, but also makes it time-consuming and expensive to screen for optimal structures using traditional experimental methods. Machine learning (ML) models can potentially revolutionize the field of materials science by predicting chemical syntheses and materials properties with high accuracy. However, ML models require data to be trained and validated. Methods to automatically extract data from scientific literature make it possible to build large and diverse datasets for ML models. In this article, opportunities and challenges of data extraction and machine learning methods are discussed to accelerate the discovery of high-performing functional material systems, while ensuring that the predicted materials are stable, synthesizable, scalable, and sustainable. The potential impact of large language models (LLMs) on the data extraction process are discussed. Additionally, the importance of research data management tools is discussed to overcome the intrinsic limitations of data extraction approaches.

The unique properties of 2D-materials like graphene are exploited in various electronic devices. In sensor applications, graphene shows a very high sensitivity, but only a low specificity. This shortcoming can be mastered by using heterostructures, where graphene is combined with materials exhibiting high analyte selectivities. Herein, this study demonstrates the precise deposition of nanoporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) on graphene, yielding bilayers with excellent specificity while the sensitivity remains large. The key for the successful layer-by-layer deposition of the MOF films (SURMOFs) is the use of planar polyaromatic anchors. Then, the MOF pores are loaded with ionic liquid (IL). For functioning sensor devices, the IL@MOF films are grown on graphene field-effect transistors (GFETs). Adding a top-gate electrode yields an ion-gated GFET. Analysis of the transistor characteristics reveals a clear Dirac point at low gate voltages, good on-off ratios, and decent charge mobilities and densities in the graphene channel. The GFET-sensor reveals a strong and selective response. Compared to other ion-gated-FET devices, the IL@MOF material is relatively hard, allowing the manufacturing of ultrathin devices. The new MOF-anchoring strategy offers a novel approach generally applicable for the functionalization of 2D-materials, where MOF/2D-material hetero-bilayers carry a huge potential for a wide variety of applications.

The expansive production of data in materials science, their widespread sharing and repurposing requires educated support and stewardship. In order to ensure that this need helps rather than hinders scientific work, the implementation of the FAIR-data principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) must not be too narrow. Besides, the wider materials-science community ought to agree on the strategies to tackle the challenges that are specific to its data, both from computations and experiments. In this paper, we present the result of the discussions held at the workshop on "Shared Metadata and Data Formats for Big-Data Driven Materials Science". We start from an operative definition of metadata, and what features a FAIR-compliant metadata schema should have. We will mainly focus on computational materials-science data and propose a constructive approach for the FAIRification of the (meta)data related to ground-state and excited-states calculations, potential-energy sampling, and generalized workflows. Finally, challenges with the FAIRification of experimental (meta)data and materials-science ontologies are presented together with an outlook of how to meet them.

ELNs play an important role for many disciplines with respect to digitalization of scientific workflows. ELNs provide the appropriate environment to collect information and data in an early stage of the research data lifecycle (e.g. data acquisition in a laboratory and at large scale research facilities) and organize it in an annotated and structured way. They make a significant contribution to protocolling experiment work flows and securing research results in line with FAIR Data principles through supporting functions for data visualization, storage, discoverability and re-use. The use of ELNs increases the efficiency and transparency of scientific work. While different ELNs are in use by the communities of several consortia of NFDI, their adoptions to the work of NFDI, e.g. the adaptation to standards and schemes, is hard to achieve. NFDI4Chem and several other consortia added this challenge to their objectives but so far, the activities are not coordinated and a systematic approach towards the implementation of common standards to different ELNs is not achieved.

The arrangement of organic semiconductor molecules in a material can be modulated using different supramolecular approaches, including the metal–organic framework (MOF) approach. These arrangements result in different frameworks topologies and structures. Fabrication of materials comprising optimized assemblies and functional molecules enables efficient tailoring of material properties, including electronic responses. Since semiconducting properties are sensitive to subtle changes in the nanostructure of the material, the exploitation of MOFs has promising potential in the development of new materials with designed structure and function. Based on decade-long method development, virtual design strategies have become ever more important, and such design methods profit from the availability of automated tools. Such tools enable screening of huge libraries of organic molecules in in silico models of the structure of three-dimensional nanoscale assemblies as the prerequisite to predict their functionality. In this report, we present and demonstrate the application of an automated workflow tool developed for MOFs of the primitive cubic (PCU) topology. We use pentacene-based ditopic linkers of a varied chemical composition and pillar linkers of different molecular sizes to automatically generate PCU MOFs, sample their structural dynamics at finite temperature, and predict electronic coupling matrix elements in vibrationally averaged assemblies. We demonstrate the change of the intermolecular ordering in the resulting MOFs and its impact on the semiconducting properties. This development lays the basis of an extendable framework to automatically model a wide variety of MOFs and characterize their function with respect to properties, such as conduction properties, absorption, and interaction with light. In the context of thin film nanotechnologies, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are currently intensively explored in the context of both, novel applications and as alternatives to existing materials. When it comes to applications under relatively harsh conditions, in several cases it has been noticed that the stability of MOF thin films deviates from the corresponding standard, powdery form of MOFs. Here, we subjected SURMOFs, surface-anchored MOF thin films, fabricated using layer-by layer methods, to a thorough characterization after exposure to different harsh aqueous environments. The stability of three prototypal SURMOFs, HKUST-1, ZIF-8, and UiO-66-NH2 was systematically investigated in acidic, neutral, and basic environments using X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. While HKUST-1 films were rather unstable in aqueous media, ZIF-8 SURMOFs were preserved in alkaline environments when exposed for short periods of time, but in apparent contrast to results reported in the literature for the corresponding bulk powders- not stable in neutral and acidic environments. UiO-66-NH2 SURMOFs were found to be stable over a large window of pH values.

Structurally well‐defined, crystalline organic/organic heterojunctions between C60‐ and anthracene‐based semiconductors are realized via layer‐by‐layer deposition of metal‐organic framework, MOF, thin films. As demonstrated by X‐ray diffraction, perfect epitaxy is achieved by adjusting the lattice constants of the two different MOFs. Deposition of top electrodes allows to fabricate p–n as well as n–p devices. Measurements of the electrical properties reveal the presence of high‐performance diodes, with a current on/off ratio of up to 6 orders of magnitude and an ideality factor close to unity. The crystalline nature of the abrupt organic/organic heterojunction provides the basis for a rational, simulation‐based optimization and tailoring of such organic semiconductor interfaces., Crystalline abrupt organic/organic heterojunctions are presented. This is realized by incorporating semiconducting molecules, here anthracene and C60, in metal‐organic framework thin films fabricated in a layer‐by‐layer fashion forming bilayer films. The p–n‐junctions show strong diode performance with a current rectification of up to six orders of magnitude.

The potential of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) for applications in optoelectronics results from a unique combination of interesting photophysical properties and the straightforward tunability using a large, ever growing set of organic and inorganic building units. Here, we demonstrate that using the MOF approach chromophores can be assembled into well-ordered 1D arrays using metal-oxo strands as lead structure. We demonstrate that the resulting porphyrinic rows exhibit unique photophysical properties and allow the realization of highly-sensitive photodetectors. A porphyrinic MOF thin film, SURMOF In-TCPP with [021] growth orientation, was fabricated using a layer-by-layer method, from In(NO3)3 and TCPP (5,10,15,20-(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin) linkers. A detailed experimental and theoretical analysis revealed that the assembly yields a structure where In-oxo strands running parallel to the substrate fix the chromophoric linkers in space to yield regular 1D arrays of porphyrins. The frontier orbitals of this highly anisotropic arrangement are localised in these columnar arrangements of porphyrins and give rise to a high photoactivity, which has been exploited to fabricate an efficient photodetector with a high responsivity of 7.28 × 1014 Jones for light with wavelength of 420 nm and short rise/fall times (0.10/0.05 s). This present work of oriented MOF thin film based high-sensitive photodetector for violet light provides a new avenue to combine the advantages of both inorganic and organic units for huge potential applications in optoelectronic devices.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have received increased attention in recent years due to their exceptional properties and versatility. MOFs consist of metal nodes connected by organic linkers. Particularly interesting are surface-anchored films (SURMOFs), which are grown on bulk substrates. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is a key technique for the analysis of the structural and chemical properties of SURMOFs on the nanoscale. For TEM sample preparation, however, the SURMOF film must be detached from the bulk substrate and transferred to an electron-transparent support. This detachment process is a severe source of damage for the SURMOF film. The preparation of SURMOFs for TEM studies is thus an obstacle that has not yet been solved satisfactorily.

In recent years, optical and electronic properties of metal&ndash, organic frameworks (MOFs) have increasingly shifted into the focus of interest of the scientific community. Here, we discuss a strategy for conveniently tuning these properties through electrostatic design. More specifically, based on quantum-mechanical simulations, we suggest an approach for creating a gradient of the electrostatic potential within a MOF thin film, exploiting collective electrostatic effects. With a suitable orientation of polar apical linkers, the resulting non-centrosymmetric packing results in an energy staircase of the frontier electronic states reminiscent of the situation in a pin-photodiode. The observed one dimensional gradient of the electrostatic potential causes a closure of the global energy gap and also shifts core-level energies by an amount equaling the size of the original band gap. The realization of such assemblies could be based on so-called pillared layer MOFs fabricated in an oriented fashion on a solid substrate employing layer by layer growth techniques. In this context, the simulations provide guidelines regarding the design of the polar apical linker molecules that would allow the realization of MOF thin films with the (vast majority of the) molecular dipole moments pointing in the same direction.

FAIRmat will install a FAIR data infrastructure for the wider area of condensed-matter physics and the chemical physics of solids. This is FAIRmat's Letter of Intent.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) consist of molecular building blocks being stitched together by strong bonds. They are well known for their porosity, large surface area, and related properties. The electronic properties of most MOFs and COFs are the superposition of those of their constituting building blocks. If crystalline, however, solid‐state phenomena can be observed, such as electrical conductivity, substantial dispersion of electronic bands, broadened absorption bands, formation of excimer states, mobile charge carriers, and indirect band gaps. These effects emerge often by the proximity effect caused by van der Waals interactions between stacked aromatic building blocks. Herein, it is shown how functionality is imposed by this proximity effect, that is, by stacking aromatic molecules in such a way that extraordinary properties emerge in MOFs and COFs. After discussing the proximity effect in graphene‐related materials, its importance for layered COFs and MOFs is shown. For MOFs with well‐defined structure, the stacks of aromatic building blocks can be controlled via varying MOF topology, lattice constant, and by attaching steric control units. Finally, an overview of theoretical methods to predict and analyze these effects is given, before the layer‐by‐layer growth technique for well‐ordered surface‐mounted MOFs is summarized.

In molecular solids, the intense photoluminescence (PL) observed for solvated dye molecules is often suppressed by nonradiative decay processes introduced by excitonic coupling to adjacent chromophores. We have developed a strategy to avoid this undesirable PL quenching by optimizing the chromophore packing. We integrated the photoactive compounds into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and tuned the molecular alignment by introducing adjustable “steric control units” (SCUs). We determined the optimal alignment of core-substituted naphthalenediimides (cNDIs) to yield highly emissive J-aggregates by a computational analysis. Then, we created a large library of handle-equipped MOF chromophoric linkers and computationally screened for the best SCUs. A thorough photophysical characterization confirmed the formation of J-aggregates with bright green emission, with unprecedented photoluminescent quantum yields for crystalline NDI-based materials. This data demonstrates the viability of MOF-based crystal engineering approaches that can be universally applied to tailor the photophysical properties of organic semiconductor materials., In molecular solids, photoluminescence of dye molecules is often suppressed owing to excitonic coupling with adjacent chromophores. The surface chemistry of water on zinc oxides is an important topic in catalysis and photocatalysis. Interaction of D2O with anisotropic ZnO(101‾ 0) surfaces was studied by IR reflection absorption spectroscopy using s‐ and p‐polarized light incident along different directions. Interpretation of the experimental data is aided using isotopologues and DFT calculations. The presence of numerous species is revealed: intact monomers, a mixed 2D D2O/OD adlayer, an anisotropic bilayer, and H‐bonded 3D structures. The isolated water monomers are identified unambiguously at low temperatures. The thermally induced diffusion of water monomers occurs at elevated temperatures, forming dimers that undergo autocatalytic dissociation via proton transfer. Polarization‐ and azimuth‐resolved IR data provide information on the orientation and strength of H‐bonds within the 2D and 3D structures. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations reveal strong anharmonic couplings within the H‐bond network.

Modular synthesis of structurally diverse functionalized azobiphenyls and azoterphenyls for the realization of optically switchable materials has been described. The corresponding synthesis of azobiphenyls and azoterphenyls by stepwise Mills/Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction, proceeds with high yields and provides facile access to a library of functionalized building blocks. The synthetic methods described herein allow combining several distinct functional groups within a single unit, each intended for a specific task, such as 1) the -N=N- azobenzene core as a photoswitchable moiety, 2) aryls and heteroaryls, functionalized with carboxylic acids or pyridine at its peripheries, as coordinating moieties and 3) varying substitution, size and length of the backbone for adaptability to specific applications. These specifically designed azobiphenyls and azoterphenyls provide modular bricks, potentially useful for the assembly of a variety of polymers, molecular containers and coordination networks, offering a high degree of molecular functionality. Once integrated into materials, the azobenzene system, as a side group on the organic linker backbone, can be exploited for remotely controlling the structural, mechanical or physical properties, thus being applicable for a broad variety of 'smart' applications.

An ideal material for photon harvesting must allow control of the exciton diffusion length and directionality. This is necessary in order to guide excitons to a reaction center, where their energy can drive a desired process. To reach this goal both of the following are required; short- and long-range structural order in the material and a detailed understanding of the excitonic transport. Here we present a strategy to realize crystalline chromophore assemblies with bespoke architecture. We demonstrate this approach by assembling anthracene dibenzoic acid chromophore into a highly anisotropic, crystalline structure using a layer-by-layer process. We observe two different types of photoexcited states; one monomer-related, the other excimer-related. By incorporating energy-accepting chromophores in this crystalline assembly at different positions, we demonstrate the highly anisotropic motion of the excimer-related state along the [010] direction of the chromophore assembly. In contrast, this anisotropic effect is inefficient for the monomer-related excited state., Exciton diffusion length and directionality are important parameters in artificial photosynthetic devices. Here, the authors present a way to make crystalline chromophore assemblies with bespoke architecture, fabricating one exhibiting anisotropic exciton transport properties.

The mass transfer of the guest molecules in nanoporous host materials, in particular in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), is among the crucial features of their applications. By using thin surface-mounted MOF films in combination with a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), the diffusion of ferrocene vapor and of ethanolic and hexanic ferrocene solution in HKUST-1 was investigated. For the first time, liquid- and gas-phase diffusion in MOFs was compared directly in the identical sample. The diffusion coefficients are in the same order of magnitude (~10$^{-16}$ m$^{2}$·s$^{-1}$), whereas the diffusion coefficient of ferrocene in the empty framework is roughly 3-times smaller than in the MOF which is filled with ethanol or n-hexane.

Metal-organic frameworks offer tremendous potential for efficient separation of molecular mixtures. Different pore sizes and suitable functionalizations of the framework allow for an adjustment of the static selectivity. Here we report membranes which offer dynamic control of the selectivity by remote signals, thus enabling a continuous adjustment of the permeate flux. This is realized by assembling linkers containing photoresponsive azobenzene-side-groups into monolithic, crystalline membranes of metal-organic frameworks. The azobenzene moieties can be switched from the trans to the cis configuration and vice versa by irradiation with ultraviolet or visible light, resulting in a substantial modification of the membrane permeability and separation factor. The precise control of the cis:trans azobenzene ratio, for example, by controlled irradiation times or by simultaneous irradiation with ultraviolet and visible light, enables the continuous tuning of the separation. For hydrogen:carbon-dioxide, the separation factor of this smart membrane can be steplessly adjusted between 3 and 8., The tunable pore size and functionalization of metal-organic frameworks offers great potential for efficient and selective separation of molecular mixtures. Crystalline{,} highly orientated surface-anchored MOF thin films{,} grown on Au substrates{,} were prepared using liquid-phase epitaxy (LPE). The successful loading of La3+ ions into the Cu3(BTC)2 (HKUST-1) SURMOFs (surface-mounted metal-organic frameworks) was monitored using X-ray diffraction (XRD). Theoretical calculations using classical force-field based Monte Carlo simulations yield a structure with two La3+ ions within the large Cu3(BTC)2 pores{,} in full agreement with experimental results on the composition of these films and the relative intensities of the XRD peaks. Implications of these findings for using MOF thin films for electronic applications are briefly discussed.

A layer of a metal organic framework (SURMOF) was prepared on a thiol monolayer on Au. Charge transport across the insulating membrane could be established by using ferrocene as an immobilised redox mediator. Reversibility of the immobilisation and its role in the electrode kinetics are discussed.

ACS nano 12(8), 7571 - 7582 (2018). doi:10.1021/acsnano.8b04125, We investigate the electronic and vibrational properties of bottom-up synthesized aligned armchair graphene nanoribbons of N = 7 carbon atoms width periodically doped by substitutional boron atoms (B-7AGNRs). Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations, we find that the dopant-derived valence and conduction band states are notably hybridized with electronic states of Au substrate and spread in energy. The interaction with the substrate leaves the bands with pure carbon character rather unperturbed. This results in an identical effective mass of $≈0.2 m_0$ for the next-highest valence band compared with pristine 7AGNRs. We probe the phonons of B-7AGNRs by ultrahigh-vacuum (UHV) Raman spectroscopy and reveal the existence of characteristic splitting and red shifts in Raman modes due to the presence of substitutional boron atoms. Comparing the Raman spectra for three visible lasers (red, green, and blue), we find that interaction with gold suppresses the Raman signal from B-7AGNRs and the energy of the green laser (2.33 eV) is closer to the resonant E22 transition. The hybridized electronic structure of the B-7AGNR–Au interface is expected to improve electrical characteristics of contacts between graphene nanoribbon and Au. The Raman fingerprint allows the easy identification of B-7AGNRs, which is particularly useful for device fabrication., Published by Soc., Washington, DC
