The Weyl semimetal WTe$_{2}$ has shown several correlated electronic behaviors, such as the quantum spin Hall effect, superconductivity, ferroelectricity, and a possible exciton insulator state, all of which can be tuned by various physical and chemical approaches. Here, we discover a new electronic phase in WTe$_{2}$ induced by lithium intercalation. The new phase exhibits an increasing resistivity with decreasing temperature and its carrier density is almost two orders of magnitude lower than the carrier density of the semi-metallic T$_{d}$ phase, probed by in situ Hall measurements as a function of lithium intercalation. Our theoretical calculations predict the new lithiated phase to be a charge density wave (CDW) phase with a bandgap of ~ 0.14 eV, in good agreement with the in situ transport data. The new phase is structurally distinct from the initial T$_{d}$ phase, characterized by polarization angle-dependent Raman spectroscopy, and large lattice distortions close to 6 % are predicted in the new phase. Thus, we report the first experimental evidence of CDW in T$_{d}$-WTe$_{2}$, projecting WTe$_{2}$ as a new playground for studying the interplay between CDW and superconductivity. Phase transitions of two-dimensional materials and their heterostructures enable many applications including electrochemical energy storage, catalysis, and memory; however, the nucleation pathways by which these transitions proceed remain underexplored, prohibiting engineering control for these applications. Here, we demonstrate that the lithium intercalation-induced 2H-1T' phase transition in MoS2 proceeds via nucleation of the 1T' phase at a heterointerface by monitoring the phase transition of MoS2/graphene and MoS2/hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) heterostructures with Raman spectroscopy in situ during intercalation. We observe that graphene-MoS2 heterointerfaces require an increase of 0.8 V in applied electrochemical potential to nucleate the 1T' phase in MoS2 compared to hBN-MoS2 heterointerfaces. The increased nucleation barrier at graphene-MoS2 heterointerfaces is due to the reduced charge transfer from lithium to MoS2 at the heterointerface as lithium also dopes graphene based on ab initio calculations. Further, we show that the growth of the 1T' domain propagates along the heterointerface, rather than through the interior of MoS2. Our results provide the first experimental observations of the heterogeneous nucleation and growth of intercalation-induced phase transitions in two-dimensional materials and heterointerface effects on their phase transition., 5 figures

Accurate assessment of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is key to diagnosis and management of kidney disfunction. Debate exists on the best GFR estimation equation for elderly people. This study aimed to compare the predictive validity and discriminative ability of four GFR equations in relation to 2-year and 6-year mortality in exceptional longevity (EL) (those over 95 years old with intact health) individuals and is an ideal model to address factors relating to life span and age-related diseases.Patients and Methods: This study used 6 years’ data of 278 EL from the Rugao longevity cohort. Baseline GFR was estimated using four equations: Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equation, Modification of Diet in Renal Disease Study (MDRD) equation, Berlin Initiative Study-1 (BIS) equation, and modified MDRD equation. Predictive validity was tested using Cox proportional hazards analysis. Overall improvement in reclassification based on estimated GFR (eGFR) was assessed applying net reclassification improvement (NRI).Results: Mean age of participants was 97± 2 years with median follow-up of 2.6 years. Median (IQR) eGFR by CKD-EPI, MDRD, BIS, and modified MDRD equations were 73.9 (62.2– 77.6), 82.3 (67.4– 98.6), 56.4 (47.9– 63.9), and 101.5 (83.1– 121.6) mL/min per 1.73 m2, respectively. Higher eGFREPI was associated with lower mortality after multivariate adjustment (for continuous eGFREPI, HRtwo-year 1.018, 95% CI 1.002– 1.033, P=0.023; HRsix-year 1.013, 95% CI 1.002– 1.025, P=0.022), while eGFR from other equations did not show any associations with mortality. NRI for two-year mortality was 0.14 and approximately significant, which may favor the CKD-EPI when compared to BIS equation (P=0.052).Conclusion: The CKD-EPI equation showed more accurate estimation of kidney function in the elderly with respect to GFR distribution and predictability of mortality risk.Keywords: glomerular filtration rate, kidney function, equation, exceptional longevity, mortality

Precise assessing phosphate removal by hemodialysis (HD) is important to improve phosphate control in patients on maintenance HD. We reported a simple noninvasive model to estimate phosphate removal within a 4-hour HD. One hundred sixty-five patients who underwent HD 4 hours per session using low-flux dialyzers made of polysulfone (1.2 m(2)) or triacetate (1.3 m(2)) were enrolled. Blood flows varied from 180 to 300 mL/min. Effluent dialysate samples were collected during the 4-hour HD treatment to measure the total phosphate removal. Predialysis levels of serum phosphate, potassium, hematocrit, intact parathyroid hormone, total carbon dioxide (TCO(2)), alkaline phosphatase, clinical and dialysis characteristics were obtained. One hundred thirty-five observations were randomly selected for model building and the remaining 30 for model validation. Total amount of phosphate removal within the 4-hour HD was mostly 15-30 mmol. A primary model (model 1) predicting total phosphate removal was Tpo(4) = 79.6 × C(45) (mmol/L) - 0.023 × age (years) + 0.065 × weight (kg) - 0.12 × TCO(2) (mmol/L) + 0.05 × clearance (mL/min) - 3.44, where C(45) was phosphate concentration in spent dialysate measured at the 45 minute of HD and clearance was phosphate clearance of dialyzer in vitro conditions offered by manufacturer's data sheet. Since the parameter TCO(2) needed serum sample for measurement, we further derived a noninvasive model (model 2):Tpo(4) = 80.3 × C(45) - 0.024 × age + 0.07 × weight + 0.06 × clearance - 8.14. Coefficient of determination, root mean square error, and residual plots showed the appropriateness of two models. Model validation further suggested good and similar predictive ability of them. This study derived a noninvasive model to predict phosphate removal. It applies to patients treated by 4-hour HD under similar conditions.
