With the rapid expansion of livestock production, the amount of livestock wastewater accumulated rapidly. Lack of biodegradable organic matter makes denitrification of livestock wastewater after anaerobic digestion more difficult. In this study, Myriophyllum aquaticum constructed wetlands (CWs) with efficient nitrogen removal performance were established under different carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratios. To achieve advanced nitrogen removal from actual municipal sewage, a novel multistage anoxic/aerobic process with sludge regeneration zone (R-MAO) was developed. In this study, the traditional coagulation process was optimized and a method of vortex coagulation for wastewater treatment was proposed for the first time. The process discards the sedimentation method used in traditional coagulation and uses agitation to bring flocs up. These flocs can then be stuck by the filter cotton fixed in wastewater, and the filter cotton and flocs can act as net capturing several times under the action of agitation. It is worth noting that the filter cotton and flocs can synergistically adsorb the suspended and organic pollutants from wastewater. The results showed that the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal of vortex coagulation could reach 82%, which was 10% higher than that of the traditional coagulation under the same coagulant dosing. In addition, the flocs in conventional coagulation and vortex coagulation were analyzed by IR spectroscopy and XRD, which showed that the mixing process did not destroy the chemical structure of the flocs. Compared with the conventional method, this process does not require a sedimentation tank, which can avoid the investment of equipment construction in this area. Thailand constantly faces the problem of water scarcity, resulting from an imbalance between available water supply and increasing water demand for economic and community expansion, as well as climate change. To address this shortage, wastewater reclamation is being planned and implemented throughout the country, along with a 20-year, long-term integrated water resource management plan. Significant opportunities from municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are dependent on the following factors: the establishment of a reuse water framework and a tangible target for treated wastewater set by local government authorities; widespread recognition and adaptation of wastewater reuse measures in the agriculture, industry, tourism and service sectors regarding climate change and water stress; and the implementation of joint investment water reuse projects between private and government agencies. However, wastewater reclamation faces some significant challenges, specifically: the limitations of regulation and monitoring for specific reuse purposes; a lack of public confidence in the water quality; the limited commercial development of reclaimed wastewater research; and difficulties in self-sustaining business models through adapting circular economy principles. This study aims to provide an overview of the wastewater reclamation, present research trends, currently operating WWTPs as well as opportunities and challenges to speed up water reuse activities in Thailand.

Bacteria–algae consortia in the light bring the benefit of O2 production and CO2 reduction for wastewater treatment, while the bottleneck for application is how it behaves in the dark. In this study, inoculum ratio and sludge retention time (SRT) affected nutrient removal rather than chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal. Dark conditions (with a sludge/Chlorella inoculum ratio of 1:2 at a SRT of 15 d) achieved comparable performance to those of light conditions, due to bacteria contribution and mechanical aeration. Compared with light conditions, the ratio of Chla/Chlb decreased and Caro/(Chla + Chlb) increased to response oxidative stress. In the dark, algae were associated with Nitrosomonas and Dechloromonas. Flavobacterium disassociated with Chlorella in the dark but associated with Chlorella in the light. Moreover, nitritation genes (amo and Hao) and denitrifying gene (narH) were up-regulated, while P metabolism genes (PPX and PPK) were down-regulated. It is proposed to enrich Nitrosomonas in the night and denitrify polyphosphate accumulating organisms (DPAO) in the daytime to establish short-cut nitrification and denitrifying phosphorus removal in practical applications.

The kwaMashu WWTW in eThekwini, South Africa, is a conventional wastewater treatment plant with a nominal capacity of 50 ML/d. It has primary settlers and anaerobic digesters, but is not configured for P removal. A modelling study is under way in preparation for a planned upgrade to 80ML/d. The upgrade is planned to improve nutrient removal, and tertiary treatment to recover potable water is also being considered. When the configuration of an existing plant is to be changed, the most critical part of the model calibration is the influent wastewater fractionation. Furthermore, due to the complexity of the systems involved, model calibration protocols typically involve the sequential calibration of the various subsystems starting with the influent characterization. As a result, errors in the influent characterization are propagated through the other calibration steps (Grau et al., 2007). In general, raw sewage COD and TSS measurements are available from routine monitoring data. However, treatment models require the fractionation of raw COD and TSS into, at minimum, soluble biodegradeable and unbiodegradable organic components, particulate biodegradable and unbiodegradable organic components and an inorganic particulate component. The constantly varying characteristics of wastewater make experimental determination of an adequately representative set of components using protocols such as those recommended by the IWA Guidelines (Reiger et al., 2012) difficult, time-consuming and expensive, which constitutes a significant barrier to the adoption of modelling by many municipalities, including eThekwini. Biodegradable organic fractions in raw and settled sewage are typically determined via BOD measurements (Hulsbeek et al., 2002) or respirometric methods (Vanrolleghen, 2002). Both of these methods take days to get results for a single sample and most municipalities simply do not have the equipment or experienced personnel to undertake these type of characterization studies. Furthermore, translating laboratory results to full scale WWTP plants can be quite challenging due to important differences between the two types of systems (Sin et al., 2005). Compliance and process operation monitoring generate large sets of measurements of COD, TSS, FSA etc, but these are insufficient for determining the wastewater characteristics required by models. Furthermore, they tend to include many errors and inconsistencies, as they are seldom evaluated critically. Nevertheless, a probabilistic fractionator tool that we have developed (Brouckaert et al., 2016) has proved effective for certain modelling purposes. This combines routine measurements with estimates based on literature and plant experience to determine a probable composition expressed in terms of model components. The probabilistic fractionator, which is included in the PWM_SA model implemented in WEST (MikebyDHI), is similar inconcept to the influent characterization methodology developed by Grau et al. (2007) but includesonly the components required for the PWM_SA model as well as a simpler fitting procedure.However, routine measurements on the influent wastewater contain no information on importantparameters, such as biodegradability, so for this the probabilistic fractionator must rely entirely onestimates.In this study, we explore the possibility of extending the probabilistic fractionator by includingroutine process measurements with the routine influent measurements, and coupling the fractionator with a simplified plant-wide steady state model, so as to obtain a more accuratefractionation of the influent. This technique could make wastewater treatment modellingaccessible to a wider range of municipalities.

In recent years industrialization has caused magnificent leaps in the high profitable growth of pharmaceutical industries, and simultaneously given rise to environmental pollution. Pharmaceutical processes like extraction, purification, formulation, etc., generate a large volume of wastewater that contains high chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological oxygen demand, auxiliary chemicals, and different pharmaceutical substances or their metabolites in their active or inactive form. Its metabolites impart non-biodegradable toxic pollutants as a byproduct and intense color, which increases ecotoxicity into the water, thus this requires proper treatment before being discharged. This study focuses on the feasibility analysis of the utilization of ultrasound cavitation (20 kHz frequency) together with a persulfate oxidation approach for the treatment of complex pharmaceutical effluent. Process parameters like pH, amplitude intensity, oxidant dosage were optimized for COD removal applying response surface methodology-based Box–Behnken design. The optimum value observed for pH, amplitude intensity and oxidant dosage are 5, 20% and 100 mg/L respectively with 39.5% removal of COD in 60 min of fixed processing time. This study confirms that a combination of ultrasound cavitation and persulfate is a viable option for the treatment of pharmaceutical wastewater and can be used as an intensification technology in existing effluent treatment plants to achieve the highest amount of COD removal.

With chemical analysis, it is impossible to qualify and quantify the toxic potency of especially hydrophilic bioactive contaminants. In this study, we applied the nematode C. elegans as a model organism for detecting the toxic potency of whole influent wastewater samples. Gene expression in the nematode was used as bioanalytical tool to reveal the presence, type and potency of molecular pathways induced by 24-h exposure to wastewater from a hospital (H), nursing home (N), community (C), and influent (I) and treated effluent (E) from a local wastewater treatment plant. Exposure to influent water significantly altered expression of 464 genes, while only two genes were differentially expressed in nematodes treated with effluent. This indicates a significant decrease in bioactive pollutant-load after wastewater treatment. Surface water receiving the effluent did not induce any genes in exposed nematodes. A subset of 209 genes was differentially expressed in all untreated wastewaters, including cytochromes P450 and C-type lectins related to the nematode’s xenobiotic metabolism and immune response, respectively. Different subsets of genes responded to particular waste streams making them candidates to fingerprint-specific wastewater sources. This study shows that gene expression profiling in C. elegans can be used for mechanism-based identification of hydrophilic bioactive compounds and fingerprinting of specific wastewaters. More comprehensive than with chemical analysis, it can demonstrate the effective overall removal of bioactive compounds through wastewater treatment. This bioanalytical tool can also be applied in the process of identification of the bioactive compounds via a process of toxicity identification evaluation. Graphical abstract

Activated sludge bulking caused by filamentous bacteria is still a problem in wastewater treatment plants around the world. Bulking is a microbiological problem, and so its solution on species-specific basis is likely to be reached only after their ecology, physiology and metabolism is better understood. Culture-independent molecular methods have provided much useful information about this group of organisms, and in this review, the methods employed and the information they provide are critically assessed. Their application to understanding bulking caused by the most frequently seen filament in Japan, ‘Ca. Kouleothrix’, is used here as an example of how these techniques might be used to develop control strategies. Whole genome sequences are now available for some of filamentous bacteria responsible for bulking, and so it is possible to understand why these filaments might thrive in activated sludge plants, and provide clues as to how eventually they might be controlled specifically.

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) play the role of intercepting microplastics in the environment and provide a platform for bioremediation to remove microplastics. Despite, this opportunity has not been adequately studied. This paper shows the potential ways microplastics-targeted bioremediation could be incorporated into wastewater treatment through the review of relevant literature on bioaugmentation of water treatment processes for pollutants removal. Having reviewed more than 90 papers in this area, it highlights that bioremediation in WWTPs can be employed through bioaugmentation of secondary biological treatment systems, particularly the aerobic conventional activated sludge, sequencing batch reactor, membrane bioreactor and rotating biological contactor. The efficiency of microplastics removal, however, is influenced by the types and forms of microorganisms used, the polymer types and the incubation time (100% for polycaprolactone with Streptomyces thermoviolaceus and 0.76% for low-density polyethylene with Acinetobacter iwoffii). Bioaugmentation of anaerobic system, though possible, is constrained by comparatively less anaerobic microplastics-degrading microorganisms identified. In tertiary system, bioremediation through biological activated carbon and biological aerated filter can be accomplished and enzymatic membrane reactor can be added to the system for deployment of biocatalysts. During sludge treatment, bioaugmentation and addition of enzymes to composting and anaerobic digestion are potential ways to enhance microplastics breakdown. Limitations of bioremediation in wastewater treatment include longer degradation time of microplastics, incomplete biodegradation, variable efficiency, specific microbial activities and uncertainty in colonization. This paper provides important insight into the practical applications of bioremediation in wastewater treatment for microplastics removal.

While many nutrient recovery technologies target liquid waste streams, new strategies are required for effective phosphorus recovery from solid waste. This study reports an innovative ligand-enabled Donnan dialysis process to recover orthophosphate (P(V)) from alum-laden waste activated sludge (WAS). Four ligands, namely acetate, citrate, ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA), and oxalate, were evaluated for P(V) release from a synthetic sludge containing 5 mM P(V) and 25 mM Al(III) and a real, alum-laden WAS with similar contents. Citrate and EDTA released more than 95% of P(V) at doses of 30 mM, outperforming acetate and oxalate. The ligand-based solubilization strategy was coupled with Donnan dialysis to recover P(V) into a clean sodium chloride draw solution. After Donnan dialysis with the synthetic sludge, the P(V) recovery's order was as follows: EDTA (54.4%)citrate (41.7%)oxalate (4.3%). The P(V) recovery efficiencies were slightly lower for Donnan dialysis with real, alum-laden WAS, namely 45.1% and 25.2% for EDTA and citrate addition, respectively, due to competitive effects exerted by other dissolved species. These promising results successfully demonstrated the proof-of-concept for ligand-enabled Donnan dialysis.

Veterinary antibiotics in swine wastewater has drawn great public attention. The removal processes of sulfamethizole (SMZ), enrofloxacin (ENR) and chlortetracycline (CTC) were investigated in the high-rate anaerobic process. The continuous experiments demonstrated that in 3 L working volume and with the organic loading rate 5 kg/(m3·d) rised to 20 kg/(m3·d), the average removal efficiencies of the high-rate anaerobic bioreactor for SMZ, ENR and CTC were 0, 54 and 100%, respectively. By using fixed-bed adsorption models, the saturation time of SMZ, ENR and CTC were 4 hydraulic retention time (HRT) (24 h), 8 HRT (48 h) and 372 HRT (2,232 h). In the batch experiments, the adsorption and biodegradation characteristics of anaerobic granular sludge were determined. In the high-rate anaerobic bioreactor, SMZ removal process mainly relied on the adsorption but it was very weak; ENR removal process was based on the adsorption and biodegradation; CTC removal process was based to a large extent on the adsorption because of the big capacity of AnGS. These results were helpful to create a rational basis for designing more suitable treatment systems as feasible barriers to the release of antibiotics into the environment.

Dissolved oxygen (DO) is one of the most important water quality factors. Maintaining the DO concentration at a desired level is of great value to both wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and aquaculture. This review covers various DO control strategies proposed by researchers around the world in the past 20 years. The review focuses on published research related to determination and control of DO concentrations in WWTPs in order to improve control accuracy, save aeration energy, improve effluent quality, and achieve nitrogen removal. The strategies used for DO control are categorized and discussed through the following classification: classical control such as proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control, advanced control such as model-based predictive control, intelligent control such as fuzzy and neural networks, and hybrid control. The review also includes the prediction and control strategies of DO concentration in aquaculture. Finally, a critical discussion on DO control is provided. Only a few advanced DO control strategies have achieved successful implementation, while PID controllers are still the most widely used and effective controllers in engineering practice. The challenges and limitations for a broader implementation of the advanced control strategies are analyzed and discussed.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, wastewater surveillance was leveraged as a powerful tool for monitoring community-scale health. Further, the well-known persistence of some pharmaceuticals through wastewater treatment plants spurred concerns that increased usage of pharmaceuticals during the pandemic would increase the concentrations in wastewater treatment plant effluent. We collected weekly influent and effluent samples from May 2020 through May 2021 from two wastewater treatment plants in central Pennsylvania, the Penn State Water Reclamation Facility and the University Area Joint Authority, that provide effluent for beneficial reuse, including for irrigation. Samples were analyzed for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (influent only), two over-the-counter medicines (acetaminophen and naproxen), five antibiotics (ampicillin, doxycycline, ofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, and trimethoprim), two therapeutic agents (remdesivir and dexamethasone), and hydroxychloroquine. Although there were no correlations between pharmaceutical and virus concentration, remdesivir detection occurred when the number of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 increased, and dexamethasone detection co-occurred with the presence of patients with COVID-19 on ventilators. Additionally, Penn State decision-making regarding instruction modes explained the temporal variation of influent pharmaceutical concentrations, with detection occurring primarily when students were on campus. Risk quotients calculated for pharmaceuticals with known effective and lethal concentrations at which 50% of a population is affected for fish, daphnia, and algae were generally low in the effluent; however, some acute risks from sulfamethoxazole were high when students returned to campus. Remdesivir and dexamethasone persisted through the wastewater treatment plants, thereby introducing novel pharmaceuticals directly to soils and surface water. These results highlight connections between human health and water quality and further demonstrate the broad utility of wastewater surveillance.

The increasing production of agro-industrial organic residues in modern society is extremely concerning. One of the most polluting procedures in the agricultural industry is the production of olive oil. This process creates a large amount of waste with high organic load and phytotoxic components. In this study, composting of two-phase olive pomace (OP), olive leaves (OL) and dewatered anaerobic sludge (DAS) from an olive mill wastewater anaerobic digestion process was conducted in a pilot-scale in-vessel high-rate continuous composter. Five different feed scenarios were studied with different OP/OL ratio in the feed material, while the effect of the addition of pine tree bark pieces (PB) and DAS was examined. The OP:OL 95:5 % w/w ratio exhibited the best results in terms of product quality, while OL proved capable of acting as a bulking agent for the better aeration of the material. The great concern over the environmental impact of wastewaters has led to the designing of advanced treatment processes to upgrade conventional treatment plants and achieve a significant reduction of contaminants in receiving waters. In the present study we combined chemical and ecotoxicological analyses, aiming to evaluate the reduction of toxicity effects associated with the removal of micropollutants and to define the contribution of the detected compounds to the overall toxicity of the mixtures in a series of wastewater effluents collected from a secondary treatment (OUT 2) and from a tertiary activated carbon treatment (OUT 3) plant. The target compounds were selected after a screening procedure among pharmaceuticals, musk fragrances, and trace metals. The classical algal growth inhibition test was conducted on the original effluent samples and on different fractions obtained by solid-phase extraction (SPE) treatment. A good accordance was found between the removal of toxicity (30%-80%) and organic compounds (70%-80%) after the tertiary treatment, suggesting its high efficiency to improve the wastewater quality. The discrepancy between the contribution to the overall toxicity of the nonadsorbable compounds (i.e., inorganic or very polar organic compounds) as experimentally measured by the SPE bioassays (18%-76%) and calculated by the concentration addition approach (97%) could be mitigated by including the bioavailability correction in metal-toxicity modeling of wastewater mixtures. For the organic compounds, the toxic equivalency method enabled us to quantify the portion of toxicity explained by the detected chemicals in both OUT 2 (82%-104%) and OUT 3 (5%-57%), validating the selection of the target molecules. Sewer pipelines often leak due to physical, operational, and environmental deterioration factors. Due to the hidden infrastructure of the sewer systems, leakage detection is often costly, challenging, and crucial at the city scale. Various sewer inspection methods (SIMs) have been developed and implemented at this time. This study evaluates the existing SIMs and categorizes them based on their area of impact (AoI) into three classes. Tier-one (T-I) methods, such as deterioration models and hotspot mapping, tend to grasp a broader and reliable understanding of the sewer systems' structural health and pinpoint the network sections that are more prone to leakage. As an intermediate solution, Tier-two (T-II) non-destructive methods, such as aerial thermal imagery (ATI) and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), inspect the potential pipe clusters regardless of their material and visualize the leaked plume generated from defects and cracks. Tier-three (T-III) methods include in-pipe SIMs, such as visual and multi-sensory inspections, that can provide an in-depth understanding of the pipe and its deterioration stage. In this study, we suggest that a sustainable sewer inspection plan should include at least two SIMs belonging to different tiers to provide a dual investigation of precision and AoI, a balance between cost and time as well as an equilibrium between self-sufficiency and decentralization.

Implementation of microalgae has been considered for enhancing effluent wastewater quality. However, it can cause environmental issues due to the release of extracellular and algal organic matter in the biological process. This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of dissolved effluent as algae- and bacteria-derived organic matter during the oxidation ditch process. Furthermore, experiments were conducted under three combinations filled by Spirulina platensis, Chlorella vulgaris, and without microalgae. The results showed that dissolved effluent organic matter was more aromatic and hydrophobic than before treatment. Fluorescence spectroscopy identified two components-aromatic protein-like and soluble microbial product-like components-at excitation/emission of 230/345 nm and 320/345 nm after treatment, instead of fulvic acid-like at 230/420 nm and humic acid-like at 320/420 nm in raw wastewater. These components were fractionated based on the average of molecular weight cut-offs (MWCOs), and high (MWCOs 50,000 Da), medium (MWCOs 50,000-1650 Da), and low molecular weights (MWCOs 1650 Da) were reported. Biological oxidation ditch under symbiosis algal bacteria generated humic and fulvic acid with a higher MWCOs than the process without algal. The quality and quantity of dissolved effluent organic matter in an oxidation ditch reactor were significantly affected by algal-bacteria symbiotic.

Pressures related to urban growth and industrial activities exacerbated by climate change had an impact on water resources in Tunisia. The present study examines the application of cladode cactus mucilage (CCM) flocculants for hot alkaline chemical degreasing Zn-electroplating wastewater treatment and reuse (WWTR). The CCM flocculation process was selected through their environmental benefits, economic facilities, sustainable use of the natural biopolymer product, input biopolymers substitution, and on-site treated wastewater (TWW) reuse and recovery. The alum coagulation and CCM flocculation were performed by the jar test series. The suitability of treated wastewater quality (TWWQ) with alum/CCM was also assessed for reuse purpose in terms of corrosion-scaling indices (RSI, LSI, PSI, AI), oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), and microbiological community growth (Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Mesophilic bacteria and yeasts) for 28 days storage at 25 °C. The total alkalinity removal efficiency reached 95.8% with an optimum dosage of alum + CCM for hot alkaline chemical degreasing wastewater bath rinsing. The results showed that the stability of TWWQ has significantly deteriorated during storage leading to aggressive wastewater, pathogen growth, and biological malodor production which make them unsuitable for reuse. Therefore, there is a need for CCM processing alternatives that preserve the physico-chemical and microbial of TWW properties during storage.

P-nitrophenol (PNP) is highly toxic and difficult to degrade, causing great harm to the ecological environment and human health. A two-stage bench-scale membrane biofilm reactor (MBfR) was constructed to treat wastewater containing high concentration of PNP and the generated nitrogen without external organic carbon sources. The two reactors were supplied with oxygen and methane, respectively. O2-MBfR was used for the degradation of PNP and the improvement of wastewater biodegradability. CH4-MBfR was used for the total nitrogen (TN) removal treatment from O2-MBfR effluent. In this experiment, the performance of the two-stage MBfR process was evaluated and optimized by adjusting operational parameters (aeration pressure, HRT, and pH). Under the optimal operation parameters, the removal efficiencies of PNP (100 mg/L) and TN attained 89.70% and 69.24%, respectively, and the removal loads were 0.930 g·m−2·d−1 and 241.42 mg·m−2·d−1, respectively. The reactor was able to accommodate the concentrations of PNP up to 200–400 mg/L, and the reactor reached maximum efficiency throughout the process when the concentration of PNP in the wastewater was 250 mg/L. The removal rates of PNP and TN reached 95.0% and 69.48%, respectively, and the removal loads were 2.37 g·m−2·d−1 and 96.22 mg·m−2·d−1, respectively. This research provides a better solution for multi-MBfR to treat toxic industrial wastewater containing phenol, nitrophenol, and further TN removal, which would not release any air pollutants into the atmosphere.

The objective of this study was to investigate the potential for pollutant removal in a pilot-scale horizontal flow polyculture constructed wetland functioning in an arid region during different seasons. The analyzed system is located in the southeast of Algeria, where the climate is arid. During the research, 32 samples of sewage were collected from both the inflow and the outflow of the constructed wetland (CW). The effluent Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD5), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Suspended Solid (TSS), Ammonia-Nitrogen (NH4-N) and Ortho-Phosphate-Phosphorus (PO4-P) from all of the treatments were significantly lower than the influent and had a removal efficiency of 71.83, 73.75, 82.77, 80.29 and 59.49% respectively. The results showed that pollution removal efficiency in the tested CW system was affected by the season (air temperature and sunlight hours). It was observed that the removal rate of pollutant indicators was higher in summer and autumn compared to winter and spring. Finally, these findings confirmed that CW with polyculture would be an excellent candidate for treating domestic wastewater in rural settlements under arid environments.

The legislation for environment protection requires strict controls of the wastewater releasing in water bodies. The wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) have been used for organic matter degradation; however, the residual total phosphorus (TP) removal has not been efficient. TP and nitrogen present in wastewater are associated to eutrophication of water bodies and algae growth. Therefore, this study discusses the efficiency of phosphorus removal by a slow filter (SF), complementary to a WWTP and the microbial community involved. The results showed that the use of SF, with or without macrophytes, is not suitable to remove TP. Spatial variation in microbial communities distributed in three distinct zones was identified in the SF. Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Chloroflexi and Firmicutes covered the hydrolytic and fermentative bacteria. The acetogenesis, nitrification, and denitrification, as well as the removal of phosphorus from the effluent, were performed by representatives affiliated to different groups. Alphaproteobacteria, Betaproteobacteria, and Gammaproteobacteria among these, Dokdonella sp., Frateuria sp., Comamonas sp., Diaphorobacter sp., Nitrosospira sp., Ferruginibacter sp., Flavobacterium sp., and the uncultured OD1 were the most abundant bacteria in the SF. The low efficiency for TP removing from SF effluents can be explained by the low abundance of phosphorus accumulating organisms (PAOs), with the association of the low concentration of biodegradable organic matter in the inlet effluent. Therefore, the alternative to using SF as a complement to WWTPs, as recommended by some Brazilian environmental agencies, did not prove to be viable and new approaches must be evaluated. During the last decades, livestock and animal feeding operations have been expanded. In parallel, these activities are among the major sources of estrogens in the environment. Thus, considering the environmental and health risks associated with estrogenic compounds, this work reviews the fate, occurrence, and removal of free and conjugated E1, E2, and E3 in livestock wastewaters. A systematic literature review was carried out, and after applying the eligibility criteria, 66 peer-reviewed papers were selected. Results suggest high estrogen concentrations and, consequently, high estrogenic activity, especially in samples from swine farming. E1 and E2 are frequently found in wastewaters from bovine, swine, and other livestock effluents. Aerobic treatment processes were more efficient for estrogen removal, whereas anaerobic systems seem poorly effective. Removal efficiencies of estrogens and estrogenic activity of up to 90% were reported for constructed wetlands, advanced pond systems, trickling filters, membrane bioreactors, aerated and nitrifying reactors, combined air flotation, and vegetable oil capture processes. High concentrations found in wastewaters from livestock allied to the removal efficiencies reported for anaerobic processes (usually used to treat livestock wastewaters) evidence the importance of monitoring these compounds in environmental matrices.

The present study assessed the performance and fouling of adding granular activated carbon (GAC) and sponge (BioCube), as two different media, to a membrane sequencing batch reactor (MSBR) system in wastewater treatment containing Acid Red 18 (AR 18). Anaerobic phase, aerobic phase, and hydraulic retention times (HRTs) of 24 h, 12 h, and 72 h were considered for 500 mg/L AR 18 removal at a sludge retention time (SRT) of 20 days by separately adding up to 35% BioCube volume and 8 g/L GAC to the reactors. Based on the kinetic study, 63 mg/L (87% removal) and 115 mg/L (77% removal) remaining dye were reported in the GAC and BioCube membrane sequencing batch reactors (GAC-MSBR and BioCube-MSBR), respectively. A gradual oxidation-reduction potential decline toward -416 mV confirmed better dye removal in GAC-MSBR than BioCube-MSBR, observing a sudden drop to -354 mV. The morphology can explain better biological treatment in GAC-MSBR in addition to the adsorption process. Soluble microbial products (SMPs) of 126.92 mg/L and 395.18 mg/L were obtained for GAC-MSBR and BioCube-MSBR, respectively. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) and SMP indicated that the GAC-MSBR water quality is better than that of the other reactor.

This work deals with the treatment of oily wastewater produced from the washing of oil-contaminated soil. Untreated oily wastewater contains toxic compounds that might be mutagenic or carcinogenic as total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) and heavy metals. Based on the water quality analysis, the tested samples contained a high concentration of TPH, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and turbidity with an average value of 67,500 mg/l, 48,240 mg/l and 176 (nephelometric turbidity unit, NTU), respectively. Several technologies were used, such as centrifuging, powdered activated carbon (PAC) and sawdust. The mean values of COD values for sawdust, centrifuging and PAC were 41,067, 25,600 and 13,133 mg/l, respectively. The present study indicated that the coagulation/flocculation processes were more efficient by using aluminium sulphate alum, while the preliminary conclusion derived was that the secondary treatment using an aeration system is capable of lowering the COD values as well as increasing the flocculent mass floc well equal to 4,784 mg/l and 0.69 g, respectively. The microbial seed was able to degrade the biosurfactant, which allows the stability of oil emulsion to be broken down and released easily.

Conventional activated sludge (AS) systems are widely used to treat domestic sewage worldwide. However, the removal of nitrogen in the AS system is limited, and its concentration in the effluent exceeds the recommended values in the discharge standards. Wastewater management is a critical issue globally. In Florida, the importance of this issue is heightened by the proximity to sensitive ecosystems. Distributed wastewater treatment units (DWTU) are a recent, state-approved alternative to septic system conversions to centralized sewer infrastructure. In this study, the performance of a DWTU was tested at a new residence in Lake Hamilton, FL. A monitoring well was installed downgradient of the DWTU absorption field to establish baseline groundwater conditions prior to occupation of the residence. The residence was occupied, after which groundwater, DWTU influent, and effluent samples were collected. Many effluent parameters significantly decreased compared to influent, including ammonia (NH3; 97%), total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN; 95%), total nitrogen (TN; 88%), the TN:TP ratio (84%), fecal coliforms (92%), carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand (CBOD; 96%), and total suspended solids (TSS; 96%). In the groundwater, nutrient concentrations initially increased compared to the baseline data, but eventually decreased, demonstrating that the DWTU was effective at improving quality of wastewater effluent. These systems could be especially effective in sensitive areas where advanced wastewater treatment has been mandated or is needed.

Hydraulic selection is a key feature of aerobic granular sludge (AGS) systems but existing aerobic granular sludge (AGS) models neglect those mechanisms: gradients over reactor height (H-reactor), selective removal of slow settling sludge, etc. This study aimed at evaluating to what extent integration of those additional processes into AGS models is needed, i.e., at demonstrating that model predictions (biomass inventory, microbial activities and effluent quality) are affected by such additional model complexity. We therefore developed a new AGS model that includes key features of full-scale AGS systems: fill-draw operation, selective sludge removal, distinct settling models for flocs/granules. We then compared predictions of our model to those of a fully mixed AGS model. Our results demonstrate that hydraulic selection can be predicted with an assembly of four continuous stirred tank reactors in series together with a correction code for plug-flow. Concentration gradients over the reactor height during settling/plug-flow feeding strongly impact the predictions of aerobic granular sludge models in terms of microbial selection, microbial activities and ultimately effluent quality. The present study investigates the potential of a novel upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor with a built-in polishing facility for the treatment of municipal sewage. The current study presented a novel process of biogas upgrading to biomethane (higher than 97%) based on anaerobic sludge and zero-valent iron (ZVI) system. When ZVI was added into an aquatic system with anaerobic granular sludge (AnGrSl) under anaerobic abiotic conditions, H2 was generated. Then, the H2 and CO2 were converted by the hydrogenotrophic methanogens to CH4. Biogas upgrading to biomethane was achieved in 4 days in the AnGrSl system (50 g L-1 ZVI, initial pH 5 and 20 g L-1 NaHCO3). In this system, when zero-valent scrap iron (ZVSI) was added instead of ZVI, a more extended period (21 days) was required to achieve biogas upgrading. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that the materials in a reactor with CO2 or biogas headspace, exhibited a mixture of ferrite and the iron carbonate phase of siderite (FeCO3), with the latter being the dominant phase. VOCs analysis in raw biogas (in the system of anaerobic sludge and ZVI) highlighted the reduction of low mass straight- and branched-chain alkanes (C6-C10). Also, H2S and NH3 were found to be substantially reduced when the anaerobic sludge was exposed to ZVI compared to the cases where ZVI was not added. This study found that simultaneously with biogas upgrading, VOCs, H2S and NH3 can be removed in a system of ZVI or ZVSI and AnGrSl under aquatic anaerobic conditions.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought new momentum to ‘wastewater-based epidemiology’ (WBE). This approach can be applied to monitor the levels of antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs), which in terms are used to make inferences about the burden of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in human settlements. However, there is still little information about temporal variability in ARG levels measured in wastewater streams and how these influence the inferences made about the occurrence of AMR in communities. The goal of this study was hence to gain insights into the variability in ARG levels measured in the influent and effluent of two wastewater treatment plants in The Netherlands and link these to levels of antibiotic residues measured in the same samples. Eleven antibiotics were detected, together with all selected ARGs, except for VanB. Among the measured antibiotics, significant positive correlations (p > 0.70) with the corresponding resistance genes and some non-corresponding ARGs were found. Mass loads varied up to a factor of 35 between days and in concomitance with rainfall. Adequate sampling schemes need to be designed to ensure that conclusions are drawn from valid and representative data. Additionally, we advocate for the use of mass loads to interpret levels of AMR measured in wastewater.

In this work a parametric study and a bench bioreactor degradation test of Direct Black 22 (DB22) by Penicillium chrysogenum was performed as a first approach to an industrial application, framed within a policy of sustainable processes development. Three ancillary carbon sources and their optimum initial concentrations were studied. These were: glucose, potato starch and potato industry wastewater. Their optimum initial concentration was 6 g/L. The use of potato starch as co-substrate showed the highest decolorization rate and COD removal. Degradation of DB22 using different immobilization supports (stainless steel sponge, loofah sponge and polyethylene strips) was studied and the results showed that the time needed for the treatment decreased from 6 to 4 d. Phytotoxicity was evaluated in the final products of the immobilized cells assays, using Lactuca sativa seeds. For all treatments phytoxicity was reduced with respect to the untreated wastewater, except for the assays using polyethylene strips. Finally, the reuse of the biomass attached to different carriers and the performance of the treatment of DB22 in a 1 L bench scale bioreactor were tested. P. chrysogenum decolorized at least four sucesives reuses. The reactor assays showed a better performance of the treatment.

Two sequential batch reactors (R1 and R2) of aerobic granular sludge (AGS) were inoculated with activated sludge of different origins. The objective was to investigate the granulation and the consistency between the structure of the microbial communities (16S rRNA amplicon sequencing) in each reactor and their metabolic performance (removal of C, N, and P). Both reactors were fed with acetate-based synthetic wastewater, targeting an anaerobic-aerobic cycle reputed to favor the phosphorus- and glycogen-accumulating organisms (PAO and GAO). Stable granulation was achieved in both reactors, where, instead of PAO, the dominant genera were ordinary heterotrophic organisms (OHO) such as Thauera, Paracoccus, and Flavobacterium known for their high capacity of aerobic storage of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA). Generally, there was good consistency between the metabolic behavior of each reactor and the bacterial genera detected. Both reactors showed high removals of C and complete nitrification (Nitrosomonas and Nitrospira detected) but a low level of simultaneous nitrification-denitrification (SND) during the aerated phase. The latter causes that nitrates were recycled to the initial phase, in detriment of PAO selection. Meanwhile, the study showed that selecting slow-growing OHOs (with aerobic storage capacity) favors stable granulation, revealing an alternative AGS technology for C and N removal.

Carbendazim is a pesticide commonly used in Ethiopian flower farms and has harmful effects on aquatic, invertebrate, and mammalian life. Previous studies have explored ways to remedy carbendazim toxicity; however, the use of constructed wetland (CW) systems for carbendazim removal from farm water runoff has not been explored in depth. The primary aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of a CW system for carbendazim removal from wastewater runoff. A two-stage pilot CW was built and tested for its efficacy of carbendazim removal under saturated conditions and varying hydraulic loading rates. The influent was pumped into the first vertical-flow mesocosm. The drained water was then pumped into the second mesocosm. The collected effluent was tested for carbendazim removal. Carbendazim removal efficiencies up to 91.80% (with a hydraulic loading rate of 100 Ld−1 and influent carbendazim concentration of 10 μg L−1) were observed. Statistical analysis indicated that the removal of carbendazim was not correlated with the initial carbendazim concentration but was negatively correlated with the hydraulic loading rate used. Two pesticide removal mechanisms were briefly probed to determine their participation in carbendazim removal. Substrate sorption accounted for 18% of total carbendazim removal; furthermore, plant uptake also played an active role.

The increasing intensification of the aquaculture industry requires the development of new strategies to reduce the negative impacts of wastewater on the environment. Plant-based coagulants/flocculants, regarded as one of the environmentally friendly technologies for wastewater treatment, show good performance in the removal of suspended solids from wastewater. The aforementioned technology involves the utilization of plants as coagulants/flocculants in the treatment process and produces nontoxic sludge as treatment by-products. The produced sludge could be converted into valuable compounds used in agriculture. This review summarizes coagulation-flocculation by using plant-based coagulants/flocculants, its mechanisms, operational factors that control the treatment process, and its application in the treatment of wastewater, especially aquaculture effluent. Moreover, this work discusses the potential utilization of aquaculture sludge as a valuable compound used in agriculture. The presented review aims to emphasize the potential of using plant-based coagulants/flocculants in the treatment of aquaculture effluent and explore the potential of using the produced sludge as fertilizer for plants to solve problems related to sludge handling and the toxicity of inorganic coagulants in a recirculating aquaculture system. This paper concluded that utilization of recovered nutrients in the form of solids is feasible for agricultural purposes, while a hydroponic system can be used to reclaim the nutrients in the form of solution.

This work aimed to analyze the performance of a hybrid upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (HUASB) reactor packed with natural zeolite for slaughterhouse wastewater treatment through kinetics modeling. Wastewater samples from a municipal bovine slaughterhouse were sieved through a 1-mm mesh screen and thermally pretreated in an autoclave. The present research aims at giving an approach to the issue of surface water contamination due to micropollutants in rural areas. The catchment of the Sûre river was selected as a reference case for the Greater Region, characterized mainly by settlements with low population density, small water bodies and small- to medium-sized wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). For these WWTPs, conventional technical solutions for micropollutant elimination are not suitable; therefore, an adapted mitigation strategy is needed to prevent the impact of micropollutants, especially during the dry season. As a suitable alternative to more intensive technologies, Constructed Wetlands (CW) in Vertical Flow (VF) configuration have been successfully tested over a 1-year period and the elimination rate of 27 micropollutants was quantified. Emission reduction by VF was then considered in a static mass balance model that calculates the longitudinal concentration profile for the entire river catchment. The EmiSûre approach, which focuses on river quality (concentrations of pollutants) instead of emitted loads, effectively allowed simulation of adopted measures a priori and resulted in efficient support for decision-makers with WWTP upgrade scenarios.

Two batch-loaded microcosm treatability studies of eight days' duration (192 hours) were conducted concurrently from July 26 through August 3 in an environmentally controlled greenhouse at the Tennessee Valley Authority's (TVA) Constructed Wetlands Research Facility in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, USA. These, the first of five treatability studies, were conducted in batch-loaded wetland microcosms, with and without reciprocation. Reciprocation refers to the process of filling and draining paired wetland cells on a recurrent and timed basis to facilitate passive aeration of fixed microbial biofilms during the drain phase and oxygen depletion during the fill phase. The study was designed to simultaneously evaluate the influence of three treatment parameters with respect to removal dynamics of chemical oxygen demand (COD), total ammonia-nitrogen (TAN), nitrate-nitrogen, and orthophosphorus. The treatment parameters evaluated included four COD concentrations, two reciprocation cycle times, and the presence or absence of reed canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea), a plant with an anoxic rootzone. Temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, redox potential, and evapotranspiration were also monitored. Results showed that treatments with reciprocation vs. no reciprocation provided significantly enhanced aerobic and anoxic treatment of wastewater and improved removal of COD and ammonium, irrespective of initial COD concentrations or planted vs. not planted with P. arundinacea. Treatments with P. arundinacea had less accumulation of nitrate nitrogen; less than 0.4 mg/L., while reciprocating treatments without P. arundinacea accumulated from 15–26 mg/L nitrate nitrogen over the 192-hour treatment period.

The concentrations and distribution of β-blockers, lipid regulators, and psychiatric and cancer drugs in the influent and effluent of the municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and the effluent of 16 hospitals that discharge into the wastewater treatment plant mentioned in this study at two sampling dates in summer and winter were examined. The pharmaceutical contribution of hospitals to municipal wastewater was determined. The removal of target pharmaceuticals was evaluated in a WWTP consisting of conventional biological treatment using activated sludge. Additionally, the potential environmental risk for the aquatic receiving environments (salt lake) was assessed. Beta-blockers and psychiatric drugs were detected in high concentrations in the wastewater samples. Atenolol (919 ng/L) from β-blockers and carbamazepine (7008 ng/L) from psychiatric pharmaceuticals were detected at the highest concentrations in hospital wastewater. The total pharmaceutical concentration determined at the WWTP influent and effluent was between 335 and 737 ng/L in summer and between 174 and 226 ng/L in winter. The concentrations detected in hospital effluents are higher than the concentrations detected in WWTP. The total pharmaceutical contributions from hospitals to the WWTP in summer and winter were determined to be 2% and 4%, respectively. Total pharmaceutical removal in the WWTP ranged from 23 to 54%. According to the risk ratios, atenolol could pose a high risk (risk quotient10) for fish in summer and winter. There are different reasons for the increase in pharmaceutical consumption in recent years. One of these reasons is the COVID-19 pandemic, which has been going on for 2 years. In particular, hospitals were operated at full capacity during the pandemic, and the occurrence and concentration of pharmaceuticals used for the therapy of COVID-19 patients has increased in hospital effluent. Pandemic conditions have increased the tendency of people to use psychiatric drugs. It is thought that beta-blocker consumption has increased due to cardiovascular diseases caused by COVID-19. Therefore, the environmental risk of pharmaceuticals for aquatic organisms in hospital effluent should be monitored and evaluated.

Treatment of domestic wastewater can recover valuable resources, including clean water, energy, and ammonia. Important metrics for these systems are greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and embodied energy, both of which are location- and technology-dependent. With the rapid socio-economic and industrial development, the problem of water shortage is becoming increasingly serious. Seeking alternative water sources to reduce the need for freshwater resources is an increasing concern. Household greywater production is high and accounts for about 50-80% of domestic wastewater. In recent years, the in situ treatment and reuse of greywater have received widespread attention. Treated greywater can be used for non-potable purposes such as toilet flushing and irrigation, which can greatly reduce the pressure of freshwater resource shortage. This paper reviews the sources and characteristics of greywater and analyzes its quantity and quality. In addition, this paper outlines and summarizes various greywater treatment technologies commonly used, including physical, biological, and chemical treatment technologies, as well as combination technologies. Understanding the mechanisms of contaminant removal is essential for effective greywater treatment. While discussing different treatment technologies, we focus on the removal mechanisms of pollutants from greywater, including organics, nutrients, surfactants, and emerging contaminants. Finally, future perspectives on greywater management and reuse are presented. Through a comprehensive review, we expect that this review will help the reader to better understand the characteristics of greywater and to more rationally select the appropriate treatment technology based on the removal mechanism of pollutants.

The configuration and the effective operation of constructed rapid infiltration (CRI) systems are of significance for advanced wastewater treatment. In this study, a novel CRI system was developed with a compact structure consisting of two stages, i.e., oxic and anoxic stages. The CRI system was continuously operated for about 140 days under different aeration modes, i.e., tidal flow, continuous aeration, and intermittent aeration. Nitrogen removal was not desirable with tidal flow due to the insufficient oxygen supply in the oxic stage for nitrification, while continuous aeration could achieve good performance for chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonium, total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) removal. By comparison, the CRI system operated with intermittent aeration was more favorable due to the effective removal ability for pollutants and relatively lower energy demand. The microbial community analysis revealed that Proteobacteria was the dominant phylum in both oxic and anoxic stages of the developed CRI system. Functional microbial groups (Plasticicumulans, Pseudomonas, and Nitrospira in the oxic stage; Thauera, Candidatus_Competibacter, and Dechloromonas in the anoxic stage) were identified for the mediation of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus in the system. This study evaluated the feasibility and the optimal aeration mode of the developed CRI system for advanced wastewater treatment, which could satisfy the requirement for the high standard of effluent quality.
