Background Children and older adults with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) display a distinct spectrum of disease severity yet the risk factors aren’t well understood. We sought to examine the expression pattern of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), the cell-entry receptor for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), and the role of lung progenitor cells in children and older patients. Methods We retrospectively analysed clinical features in a cohort of 299 patients with COVID-19. The expression and distribution of ACE2 and lung progenitor cells were systematically examined using a combination of public single-cell RNA-seq datasets, lung biopsies, and ex vivo infection of lung tissues with SARS-CoV-2 pseudovirus in children and older adults. We also followed up patients who had recovered from COVID-19. Results Compared with children, older patients (> 50 yrs.) were more likely to develop into serious pneumonia with reduced lymphocytes and aberrant inflammatory response (p = 0.001). The expression level of ACE2 and lung progenitor cell markers were generally decreased in older patients. Notably, ACE2 positive cells were mainly distributed in the alveolar region, including SFTPC positive cells, but rarely in airway regions in the older adults (p < 0.01). The follow-up of discharged patients revealed a prolonged recovery from pneumonia in the older (p < 0.025). Conclusion Compared to children, ACE2 positive cells are generally decreased in older adults and mainly presented in the lower pulmonary tract. The lung progenitor cells are also decreased. These risk factors may impact disease severity and recovery from pneumonia caused by SARS-Cov-2 infection in older patients.

The KOtBu-mediated three-component coupling reaction of indoles, [60]fullerene, and haloalkane has been developed as a practical and efficient protocol for the one-pot synthesis of various 1,4-(3-indole)(organo)[60]fullerenes. The reaction exhibits high regioselectivity at the 3-position of indoles and the 1,4-position on the [60]fullerene core. Furthermore, this methodology features excellent functional group tolerance, such as chloro, ester, cyano, and nitro on indole.

This paper focuses on the mode purity and beam propagation properties of Gaussian vortex beams which are Gaussian beams modulated by the spiral phase plates (SPP). For a given topological charge, the Laguerre-Gaussian beam has constant mode purity during its free space propagation. However, with the increase of the topological charge, the value of the highest mode purity decays. Our results imply that the modulation of SPP to the Gaussian beam is suitable for producing Laguerre-Gaussian beams with low topological charge, rather than with high topological charge.

In this paper, a self-calibration method for a linear structured light 3D measurement system and its advantages are presented. According to the mathematical model of the linear-structured light 3D measurement system, the calibration problem is a highdimensional optimization problem. The principle of this self-calibration method can be drawn from a traditional calibration method. In this method, quantum genetic algorithm and feature matching are applied to self-calibration. Feature matching is used to derive two points with fixed spatial relationships, and an optimal solution of system parameters can be obtained by quantum genetic algorithm. Finally, experimental results are given. A two-photon absorption water-soluble Zn(ii) probe for simultaneous membrane nucleus live cell imaging and its potential for blood-brain barrier staining., Small, biocompatible and water-soluble molecules with high two-photon absorption (2PA) cross-section values (δ) are in high demand for specific bioimaging applications. Here, two novel terpyridine derivative ligands with donor–acceptor (D–A) (L1) and donor–π–acceptor (D–π–A) (L2) models, and their corresponding Zn(ii) complexes are designed and characterized. It was found that the two-photon absorption cross section values (δ) in the near-infrared region (NIR, about 800 nm) are significantly enhanced for complexes 1 and 2 compared to their free D–A type ligand L1, while those of complexes 3 and 4 were greatly decreased relative to their free ligand L2, thus confirming that the smaller ligand (D–A type) displays a suitable Turn-ON fluorescence pair for two-photon fluorescence microscopy (2PFM). Firstly, the potential of simultaneously labeling a live cell plasma membrane and nucleus using complex 1 is demonstrated. In addition, live larval and adult zebrafish incubated with an optimal concentration of 1 demonstrated clear brain uptake. Lastly and importantly, using such a probe to visualize the blood–brain-barrier (BBB) capillary endothelial cells and penetrate the BBB into the central nervous system (CNS) intravenously in a mouse model is also explored.

A novel hydrogen peroxide biosensor based on the BPT/AuNPs/graphene/HRP composite was developed. Firstly, graphene was prepared under the protection of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and then the AuNPs/graphene composite was synthesized via in situ decoration. Using biphenyldimethanethiol (BPT) as a connector, the AuNPs/graphene composite was immobilized on the surface of the Au electrode, and whereafter the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was decorated on the surface of the composite by adsorption. The morphology and structure of the products were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM and UV-visible spectroscopy. The electrocatalytic performance of the resulting BPT/AuNPs/grapheme/HRP composite (namely, biosensor) was studied by electrochemical instrument. The results show that the biosensor has high sensitivity and fast response to H2O2. In the solution of pH 7.4 with potential −0.2 V, the linear response of the biosensor to H2O2 ranges from 5.0×10−6 to 2.5×10−3 M with the detection limit of 1.5×10−6 M.

This study aimed to evaluate the clinical value of a novel ureter dilatation method during ureteroscopic pneumatic lithotripsy in patients with ureteral calculi and polyps. Clinical information of 86 patients with ureter calculi and polyps who underwent ureteroscopic pneumatic lithotripsy was reviewed. A cavity-distention machine was used in 44 cases to inject normal saline for keeping clear operation view (cavity-distention machine-assisted group). A high handled water bag with artificial water injection (traditional pneumatic lithotripsy group) was used in 42 cases. The total operation time, time of stone removal, stone clearance rate and surgery complications were compared between two groups. All operations were successful with no patients transferred to open surgery. No ureter breakage or avulsion occurred in two groups. Two patients in traditional pneumatic lithotripsy group suffered from ureter perforation. In cavity-distention machine-assisted group and traditional pneumatic lithotripsy group, the total operation time was 30.1±4.8 min and 36.2±6.0 min, respectively (t=-5.22, P

H&M has been in China for three years. The consumers in China are still enthusiastic with this brand when the first store in the capital city, Beijing. In this paper, we use the concept of brand identity and brand image and outline a conceptual model for understanding and studying the customer experience of H&M in China. Case study illustrates how this model works in the design and management of the branding in H&M.
