The precipitation behavior of the second phase in Fe-18Cr-17Mn-2Mo-0.85N high nitrogen and nickel-free austenitic stainless steel after grain boundary character distribution (GBCD) optimization was investigated. The results show that the fraction of low Σ coincidence site lattice (CSL) boundaries increases from 47.9% for the solid solution treated specimen to 82.25% for the specimen cold-rolled by 5% and then annealed at 1423 K for 72 h (r5%-a1423 K/72 h). Compared with the solution treated sample, nitride precipitation is obviously restrained and the fraction of precipitates is the least in r5%-a1423 K/72 h sample with the highest proportion of SBs. The appearance of a high proportion of CSL boundaries with low energy inhibits the nitrides precipitation through GBCD optimization.

For investigating the effects of gradient energy coefficients on the void-matrix interface thickness during Czochralski silicon single crystal, an established phase field model and the corresponding program code were used to simulate the evolution process of a single void. Based on the given criterion of interface thickness, sixteen simulating cases were performed to study the related influence laws. The results show that the void-matrix interface thickness is influenced by both of the gradient energy coefficients of composition and chemical ordering, and the increases of gradient energy coefficients contribute to the enlargement of interface thickness.

Based on the fundamental metallurgical principles, a modified cellular automaton model which considers the influences of uneven distribution of dislocation density and small-sized precipitated particles was proposed to simulate the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) performances of steels with the three kinds of equivalent particle's size. The results show that the model can truly simulate the nucleation order and multi-round feature of DRX as well as the law of small-sized precipitated particle's retarding DRX; The finer are the particles, the stronger gets the action of their pinning grain boundary.

To investigate their dynamics and interaction mechanisms, the growth process of the two voids with different sizes during Czochralski silicon crystal growth were simulated by use of an established phase field model and its corresponding program code. On the basis of the several phase field numerical simulation cases, the evolution laws of the double voids were acquired as follows: the phase field model is capable to simulate the growth process of double voids with different sizes; there are two modes of their growth, that is, either mutual integration or competitive growth; the exact moment of their fusion can be also captured, and it is τ of 7.078 (simulation time step of 14156) for the initial vacancy concentration of 0.02 and the initial space between two void centers of 44Δx.

Soil moisture and ground thaw state are both indicative of a hillslope's ability to transfer water. In cold regions, in particular, it is widely known that the depth of the active layer and wetness of surface soils are important for runoff generation, but the diversity of interactions between ground thaw and surface soil moisture themselves has not be studied. To fill this knowledge gap, detailed shallow soil moisture and thaw depth surveys were conducted along systematic grids from April to July of 2008 at the Baker Creek Basin, Northwest Territories. Multiple hillslopes were studied to determine how the interactions differed along a spectrum of topological, typological and topographic situations across the landscape. Overall results did not show a simple link between soil moisture and ground thaw as was expected. Instead, correlation was a function of wetness. The drier the site was, the more random the interaction between soil moisture and ground thaw. This indicates that interactive soil moisture and thaw depth behaviour on hillslopes in cold regions changes with location and cannot necessarily be lumped together in hydrological models. To explore further why these differences arise, a companion paper (Part 2: Influences of water and energy fluxes) will examine how the hydrological and energy fluxes influenced the found spatiotemporal patterns.

The companion paper (Guan et al., 2010) demonstrated variable interactions and correlations between shallow soil moisture and ground thaw in soil filled areas along a wetness spectrum in a subarctic Canadian Precambrian Shield landscape. From wetter to drier, these included a wetland, peatland and soil filled valley. Herein, water and energy fluxes were examined for these same subarctic study sites to discern the key controlling processes on the found patterns. Results showed the key control in variable soil moisture and frost table interactions among the sites was the presence of surface water. At the peatland and wetland sites, accumulated water in depressions and flow paths maintained soil moisture for a longer duration than at the hummock tops. These wet areas were often locations of deepest thaw depth due to the transfer of latent heat accompanying lateral surface runoff. Although the peatland and wetland sites had large inundation extent, modified Péclet numbers indicated the relative influence of external and internal hydrological processes at each site were different. Continuous inflow from an upstream lake into the wetland site caused advective and conductive thermal energies to be of equal importance to conductive ground thaw. The absence of continuous surface flow at the peatland and valley sites led to dominance of conductive thermal energy over advective energy for ground thaw. The results suggest that the modified Péclet number could be a very useful parameter to differentiate landscape components in modeling frost table heterogeneity. The calculated water and energy fluxes, and the modified Péclet number provide quantitative explanations for the shallow soil moisture-ground thaw patterns by linking them with hydrological processes and hillslope storage capacity.

For discovering the principle of processing parameter combination for the stable growth and better wafer quality of Φ450 mm Czochralski grown silicon single crystal (shortly called Cz silicon crystal), the effects of crystal rotation rate and crucible one on the V/G ratio were simulated by using CGSim software. The results show that their effect laws on the V/G ratio for Φ450 mm Cz silicon crystal growth are some different from that for Φ200 mm Cz silicon one, and the effects of crucible rotation rate are relatively smaller than that of crystal one and its increasing only makes the demarcation point between two regions with different V/G ratio variations outward move along radial direction, and it promotes the wafer quality to weaken crystal rotation rate and strengthen crucible one.

Genes subject to genomic imprinting exist in large chromosomal domains, probably reflecting coordinate regulation of the genes within a cluster. Such regulation has been demonstrated for the H19, Igf2, and Ins2 genes that share a bifunctional imprinting control region. We have identified the Dlk1 gene as a new imprinted gene that is paternally expressed. Furthermore, we show that Dlk1 is tightly linked to the maternally expressed Gtl2 gene. Dlk1 and Gtl2 are coexpressed and respond in a reciprocal manner to loss of DNA methylation. These genes are likely to represent a new example of coordinated imprinting of linked genes.

Esculentoside A (EsA) is a kind of saponin isolated from Phytolacca esculenta Van Houtte. It was shown to significantly inhibit phagocytic activity, intracellular and extracellular production of interleukin-1 by thioglycollate primed murine peritoneal macrophages in vitro at the concentration 0.01-1.0 mumol.L-1. In vivo experiments showed that EsA 2.5-5 mg.kg-1 markedly decreased serum hemolysin concentration in sensitized mice challenged with sheep red blood cells. Inhibition of antibody production by B lymphocytes, phagocytosis and the production of inflammatory mediators by macrophages may partially explain the wide and strong anti-inflammatory effect of EsA.

The inhibitory action on isolated uterus of middle-pregnancy mice have been compared in Eucommia ulmoides and its salt water processed product. It has been found that after processing the inhibitory action on the automatic contraction of isolated uterus, the antagonism on spasmodis contraction caused by acetylcholine are increased, but the antagonism on spasmodis contraction caused by pituitarium posterius and the Pb content are decreased.
