SnO2-based materials are promising catalysts for CO2 electrochemical reduction due to its attractive selectivity for C1 products (formate and carbon monoxide) but they tend to suffer high overpotential and poor stability. Here, a porous SnO2/ZnO catalyst is synthesized via hydroxides coprecipitation, hydrothermal treatment and carbon black template calcination. SnO2 nanocrystals are produced by calcination of tin hydroxides while the growth of ZnO nanocrystals is associated with carbon black template. The porous SnO2/ZnO catalyst presents a stable Faradaic efficiency of >90% for CO2 reduction at an applied voltage of -0.7 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and a C1 current density of 9.53 mA cm−2 over a testing period of 100 h. The improved performance is originated from abundant heterojunctions and lattice defects of SnO2 and ZnO nanocrystals, large specific surface area and grain boundary. This study provides a facile method to fabricate porous and nanocrystal metal oxides electrocatalysts for electrochemical processes.

Synergistic bioassay-guided isolation of the extracts of Artemisia rupestris L, which belongs to the family Asteraceae, afforded two acetylenic spiroketal enol ethers, namely rupesdiynes A (1) and B (2). Their structures were determined based on spectroscopic analysis and experimental and calculated ECD investigations. The two compounds exhibited synergistic activity and were able to reduce the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of oxacillin four-fold, with a fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI) of 0.5 in combination with oxacillin against the oxacillin-resistant EMRSA-16. Biofilm formation inhibitory and Ethidium bromide (EtBr) efflux assay were further employed to verify the possible mechanism of the synergistic antibacterial effect. Additionally, molecular docking studies were conducted to investigate the binding affinities of the two compounds with penicillin-binding protein 2a (PBP2a) of EMRSA-16. Taken together, rupesdiynes A (1) and rupesdiyne B (2) showed moderate synergistic activity against EMRSA-16 with oxacillin via inhibiting biofilm formation and efflux pump activity, respectively.

Spatial visualization of mode distribution of light scattering from plasmonic nanostructures is of vital importance for understanding the scattering mechanism and applications based on these plasmonic nanostructures. A long unanswered question in how the spatial information of scattered light from a single plasmonic nanostructure can be recovered in the far-field, under the constraints of the diffraction limit of the detection or imaging optical system. In this paper, we reported a theoretical model on retrieving local spatial information of scattered light by plasmonic nanostructures in a far-field optical imaging system. In the far-field parametric sin δ images, singularity points corresponding to near-field hot spots of the edge mode and the gap mode were resolved for gold ring and split rings with subwavelength diameters and feature sizes. The experimental results were verified with Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) simulation in the near-field and far-field, for the edge mode and the gap mode at 566 nm and 534 nm, respectively. In sin δ image of split-ring, two singularity points associated with near-field hot spots were visualized and resolved with the characteristic size of 90 and 100 nm, which is far below the diffraction limit. The reported results indicate the feasibility of characterizing the spatial distribution of scattering light in the far-field and with sub-wavelength resolution for single plasmonic nanostructures with sub-wavelength feature sizes.

Being the second-generation semiconductor material, GaAs is widely used in high-power devices. In this paper, a new method of multi-temperature points linear fitting for the light intensity values of the surface of GaAs collected at different temperatures, which range from 40 °C to 100 °C and the temperature rise interval is 20 °C, was used in order to obtain the thermoreflectance property. Meanwhile, the thermoreflectance property of the passivated GaAs was analyzed because the surface of GaAs is very easy to be oxidized, which will affect the performance and stability of GaAs devices. Finally, we obtained the thermoreflectance coefficient of GaAs and the passivated GaAs in visible spectrum and near-ultraviolet illumination wavelengths. The result shows that the optical response of GaAs was changed by the presence of the passivation layer significantly because of the interference effects. The study solves the problem of selecting the appropriate illumination wavelength in the study of the thermoreflectance property of GaAs. Therefore, the research is of great significance for accurate temperature measurement of GaAs semiconductor power devices.

Disturbances or defects in the process of wound repair can disrupt the delicate balance of cells and molecules necessary for complete wound healing, thus leading to chronic wounds or fibrotic scars. Myofibroblasts are one of the most important cells involved in fibrotic scars, and reprogramming provides a potential avenue to increase myofibroblast clearance. Although myofibroblasts have long been recognized as terminally differentiated cells, recent studies have shown that myofibroblasts have the capacity to be reprogrammed into adipocytes. This review intends to summarize the potential of reprogramming myofibroblasts into adipocytes. We will discuss myofibroblast lineage tracing, as well as the known mechanisms underlying adipocyte regeneration from myofibroblasts. In addition, we investigated different changes in myofibroblast gene expression, transcriptional regulators, signalling pathways and epigenetic regulators during skin wound healing. In the future, myofibroblast reprogramming in wound healing will be better understood and appreciated, which may provide new ideas for the treatment of scarless wound healing.

Summary Surfactants are typically used in hydraulic fracturing applications to perform a single function, which results in multiple surfactants being used during operations. In this study, flow loop and coreflood tests were conducted with slickwater fracturing fluid systems and analyzed in conjunction to observe the effectiveness of flowback surfactants and their ability to increase friction reducer performance. A multifunctional surfactant blend (MSB) is tested against surfactant formulations commonly used either as a flowback aid or as a performance enhancer for low-cost friction reducers in harsh conditions. A case study is conducted using wells in the Mississippian limestone play to correlate laboratory investigations to field observations. Each surfactant solution was tested with a friction-reducing polymer in synthetic brine containing a salt concentration of 200 000 mg/L representative of harsh field conditions in the laboratory evaluation. Coreflood tests were conducted under reservoir conditions to evaluate flowback efficiency quantified by regained permeability. To test the ability of the surfactants to improve friction reduction (FR) performance, a 0.4-in. inner diameter friction flow loop was used. In the field-scale application, four wells were hydraulically fractured with two wells acting as control cases and two wells including the addition of the MSB. Completions and production data are presented to compare the performances of the wells and the efficacy of the MSB at the field scale. Friction flow loop testing showed that slickwater fluids with commonly used flowback surfactant formulations, including the MSB, can greatly improve the performance of economical freshwater friction reducers, even in a high calcium (13 000 mg/L) synthetic brine. The same slickwater/surfactant fluids used in the flow loop tests were evaluated in coreflood tests. Depending on the degree of polymer-induced damage created in the core samples, fluids containing the MSB offered the most consistent regained permeability. The laboratory-scale study shows that the MSB is functional for both polymer damage mitigation and acts as a performance booster for the FR, allowing a more economical friction reducer to be selected for slickwater fracturing. In field applications, including the MSB in the fracturing fluid resulted in increased oil production volumes and/or a reduced need for remedial operations throughout the early life of the well. The results of this study show that by properly utilizing the friction flow loop and coreflood laboratory-scale experiments, an optimized MSB can be selected for hydraulic fracturing operations at the field scale. By selecting a flowback surfactant formulation that also increases friction reducer performance, a lower friction reducer dosage or a more economical friction reducer can potentially lead to operational savings at the field scale.

Ferroptosis is a newly found cell death mechanism, which could bypass apoptosis and reverse multidrug resistance of tumors. However, efficient induction of tumor ferroptosis remains a challenge. SFTs are thought to have an unpredictable clinical course and currently have no recognized prognostic criterion. Our study aimed to determine the relationship between clinicopathological characteristics and the prognosis of patients with orbital SFTs.The clinicopathological features of these patients were extracted from clinical records. The relationships between these features and prognosis were analysed.The positive rates of CD34, CD99, Blc2, and STAT6 expression were 90.3%, 90.3%, 83.9%, and 100%, respectively. The tumour recurrence rate was 38.7%. A higher recurrence rate was observed in patients with Ki67 index ≥ 5 (56.25% vs. 20%, P = 0.038).A Ki67 index ≥ 5 was an effective parameter for predicting tumour recurrence of orbital SFTs. Close follow-up is needed for these patients.

Trans-p-hydroxycinnamic acid and its esters in the leaves of Ligustrum robustum might be a new resource to prevent diabetes and its complications. In the present study, a new HPLC-UV method using hydrolyzation with sodium hydroxide for quantitation of trans-p-hydroxycinnamic acid and total trans-p-hydroxycinnamic acid esters in the leaves of L. robustum was developed, since it was difficult and troublesome to analyze no less than 34 trans-p-hydroxycinnamic acid esters by usual HPLC. The extract of L. robustum was hydrolyzed with sodium hydroxide at 80 °C for 2 h, and then, hydrochloride was added. HPLC analysis was performed in reverse phase mode using a C-18 column, eluting with methanol-0.1% acetic acid aqueous solution (40:60, v/v) in isocratic mode at a flow rate of 1.0 mL·min−1 and detecting at 310 nm. The linear range for trans-p-hydroxycinnamic acid was 11.0–352.0 μg·mL−1 (r2 = 1.000). The limit of detection and limit of quantification were 2.00 and 6.07 μg·mL−1, respectively. The relative standard deviations of intra-day and inter-day variabilities for trans-p-hydroxycinnamic acid were less than 2%. The percentage recovery of trans-p-hydroxycinnamic acid was 103.3% ± 1.1%. It is the first HPLC method using hydrolyzation for quantification of many carboxylic esters. Finally, the method was used successfully to determine trans-p-hydroxycinnamic acid and total trans-p-hydroxycinnamic acid esters in various extracts of the leaves of L. robustum. The 60–70% ethanol extracts of L. robustum showed the highest contents of free trans-p-hydroxycinnamic acid (3.96–3.99 mg·g−1), and the 50–80% ethanol extracts of L. robustum displayed the highest contents of total trans-p-hydroxycinnamic acid esters (202.6–210.6 mg·g−1). The method can be applied also to the quality control of the products of L. robustum.

Gyrodactylus is a lineage of monogenean flatworm ectoparasites exhibiting many features that make them a suitable model to study their co-evolution with fish hosts. Previous co-evolutionary studies of this lineage mainly relied on low-power datasets (a small number of samples and a single molecular marker), and (now) outdated algorithms. To investigate the coevolutionary relationship of gyrodactylids and their fish hosts in high resolution, we used complete mitogenomes (including two newly sequenced Gyrodactylus species), a large number of species in the single-gene dataset, and four different coevolutionary algorithms. The overall co-evolutionary fit between the parasites and hosts was consistently significant. Multiple indicators support gyrodactylids as highly host-specific parasites, but few gyrodactylids can parasitize either multiple (more than 5) or phylogenetically-distant fish hosts. The molecular dating results indicate they tend to evolve towards high host specificity. Speciation by host-switching is a more important speciation mode than co-speciation for them. Assuming the origin on Cypriniformes, we inferred four major host switch events to non-Cypriniformes hosts (mostly Salmoniformes) occurred deep in the evolutionary history. Despite their relative rarity, these events had strong macroevolutionary consequences for gyrodactylid diversity. For example, in our dataset, 57.28% of all studied gyrodactylids parasitised only non-Cypriniformes hosts, which implies that the evolutionary history of more than half of all included lineages could be traced back to these major host switch events. Geographical co-occurrence of fishes and gyrodactylids determined the host use by these gyrodactylids, and geography accounted for most of the phylogenetic signal in host use.

This study aimed to enhance the efficiency of construction waste bricks (PRBPs) in removing diclofenac (DFC) by preparing surfactant-modified waste bricks (CCBPs) as adsorbents. The properties of the adsorbents were analyzed, and the parameters related to the adsorption process were examined. The findings demonstrate that the addition of cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) significantly improved the ability of the waste bricks to adsorb DCF. The pH values affected the adsorption behavior, with the adsorption decreasing as the pH increased. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-first-order kinetic equation, and the rate of adsorption was fast. The Langmuir model was used to fit the adsorption isotherms. According to the adsorption thermodynamics, the adsorption of DCF onto both adsorbents was exothermic, and it was more favorable at lower temperatures. The adsorption capacity of the CCBPs decreased sharply as the KCl concentration increased. The mechanism of adsorption might be explained by the interplay of the π-π interaction, surface complexation, and electrostatic interaction. This study offers a new method for removing micropollutants from aqueous solutions using waste bricks, thus extending the scope of their reuse applications.

The leaves of Ligustrum robustum have been applied as Ku-Ding-Cha, a functional tea to clear heat and remove toxins; and served as a folk medicine to deal with diabetes, obesity, and hypertension. Trans-p-hydroxycinnamic acid and its esters, which were isolated from the leaves of L. robustum, might be a new resource to prevent diabetes and its complications because of their strong -glucosidase and fatty acid synthase (FAS) inhibitory activities and antioxidant effect. However, the quantitative analytical method for trans-p-hydroxycinnamic acid and its esters in the leaves of L. robustum hasn’t been reported so far. In addition, it was difficult and troublesome to analyze no less than 34 trans-p-hydroxycinnamic acid esters by usual HPLC. Therefore, a new HPLC-UV method using hydrolyzation with sodium hydroxide for quantitation of trans-p-hydroxycinnamic acid and its esters in the leaves of L. robustum was developed in the present study. The optimal hydrolyzation conditions were as follows: 1 mL sodium hydroxide aqueous solution (1 M) was added into 1 mL the extract of L. robustum and incubated at 80 °C for 2 h , and then 1 mL hydrochloride (1 M) solution was added. HPLC analysis was performed in reverse phase mode using a C-18 column, eluting with methanol-0.1% acetic acid aqueous solution (40:60, v/v) in isocratic mode at a flow rate of 1.0 mL/min, and detecting at 310 nm. The analytical method was simple and rapid, which simplified greatly the analytical process. The method was validated in terms of linearity, limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantification (LOQ), precision, and accuracy. High linearity was demonstrated with correlation coefficient of 1.000 for trans-p-hydroxycinnamic acid. The LOD and LOQ values were 1.55 and 4.69 μg/mL, respectively. The relative standard deviations (RSD) of intra-day and inter-day variabilities for trans-p-hydroxycinnamic acid were less than 2%. The percentage recovery of trans-p-hydroxycinnamic acid was 101.2% ± 0.8%. Finally, the proposed method was applied successfully to the determination and comparison of the contents of trans-p-hydroxycinnamic acid and its esters in various extracts of the leaves of L. robustum. The 60%-70% ethanol extracts of L. robustum showed the highest contents of free trans-p-hydroxycinnamic acid (3.96-3.99 mg/g), and the 50%-80% ethanol extracts of L. robustum displayed the highest contents of trans-p-hydroxycinnamic acid esters (202.6-210.6 mg/g). The method can be applied also to the quality control of the products of L. robustum.

Multitask learning (MTL) improves the performance achieved on each task by exploiting the relevant information between tasks. At present, most of the mainstream deep MTL models are based on hard parameter sharing mechanisms, which can reduce the risk of model overfitting. However, negative knowledge transfer may occur, which hinders the performance improvement achieved for each task. In this paper, for situations when multiple tasks are jointly trained, we propose a deep MTL method for adaptive nodes. On the basis of the hard parameter sharing network architecture, the number of nodes in the network is dynamically updated by setting a continuous gradient difference-based sign threshold and a warm-up training iteration threshold through the relationships between the parameters and the loss function. After each task fully utilizes the shared information, adaptive nodes are used to further optimize each task, reducing the impact of negative migration. By using simulation and case studies, we demonstrate theoretical proof that the performance of the proposed method is better than that of the competing approach. MSC: 68T07; 68W99

This study aims to generate an exosomal vaccine carrying T cell epitope peptides of SARS-CoV-2 for the induction of CD8+ T cell response.Methods: Thirty-one peptides presented by HLA-A0201 molecule were conjugated to the DMPE-PEG-NHS molecules, and mixed with DSPE-PEG to form the peptide-PEG-lipid micelles, then fused with exosomes to generate the exosomal vaccine, followed by purification using size-exclusion chromatography and validation by Western blotting, liquid nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) test and transmission electron microscopy. Furthermore, the exosomal vaccine was mixed with Poly (I:C) adjuvant and subcutaneously administered for three times into the hybrid mice of HLA-A0201/DR1 transgenic mice with wild-type mice. Then, the epitope-specific T cell responses were detected by ex vivo ELISPOT assay and intracellular cytokine staining.Results: The exosomal vaccine was purified from the Peak 2 fraction of FPLC and injected into the hybrid mice for three times. The IFN-γ spot forming units and the frequencies of IFN-γ+/CD8+ T cells were 10– 82-fold and 13– 65-fold, respectively, higher in the exosomal vaccine group compared to the Poly (I:C) control group, without visible organ toxicity. In comparison with the peptides cocktail vaccine generated in our recent work, the exosomal vaccine induced significantly stronger T cell response.Conclusion: Exosomal vaccine loading T cell epitope peptides of SARS-CoV-2 virus was initially generated without pre-modification for both peptides and exosomes, and elicited robust CD8+ T cell response in HLA-A transgenic mice.Graphical Abstract: Keywords: the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2, exosomal vaccine, T cell, epitope, human leukocyte antigen-A

To overcome the shortcomings of the standard particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO), such as premature convergence and low precision, a dynamic multi-swarm PSO with global detection mechanism (DMS-PSO-GD) is proposed. In DMS-PSO-GD, the whole population is divided into two kinds of sub-swarms: several same-sized dynamic sub-swarms and a global sub-swarm. The dynamic sub-swarms achieve information interaction and sharing among themselves through the randomly regrouping strategy. The global sub-swarm evolves independently and learns from the optimal individuals of the dynamic sub-swarm with dominant characteristics. During the evolution process of the population, the variances and average fitness values of dynamic sub-swarms are used for measuring the distribution of the particles, by which the dominant one and the optimal individual can be detected easily. The comparison results among DMS-PSO-GD and other 5 well-known algorithms suggest that it demonstrates superior performance for solving different types of functions.

The Line Commutated Converter (LCC)-based High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission system is an effective scheme for long-distance transmission of wind power. Commutation failure is a common failure of LCC-HVDC transmission system. During the commutation failure, the overvoltage of the sending Alternating Current (AC) grid will occur to disconnect the wind farm from the utility grid and limit the transmission capacity of the system. It is necessary to suppress the overvoltage of the sending AC grid under commutation failure to increase the transmission capacity of the LCC-HVDC system. In this paper, a mathematical model of the transient overvoltage peak value of the sending AC grid under commutation failure is established. The mathematical model can quantitatively analyze the influence of the reactive power of the wind farm and the transmission capacity of the LCC-HVDC system on the overvoltage peak value of the sending AC grid. Based on the mathematical model, a power coordinated control strategy for wind farm is proposed to improve the reactive power support capability under grid overvoltage. The proposed control strategy can effectively suppress the overvoltage of the sending AC grid and increase the transmission capacity of the LCC-HVDC system. The accuracy of the mathematical model is verified by simulation, and the superiority of the power coordinated control strategy is verified by the control hardware-in-the-loop (CHIL) experiment.

BackgroundObservational studies have revealed associations between diet and lung cancer. However, it is unclear whether the association is disturbed by confounding factors. We used a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) method to characterize the associations between diet and the lung cancer risk (including 3 subtypes: lung adenocarcinoma (LA), squamous cell lung carcinoma (SqCLC), and small cell lung cancer (SCLC)).Materials and methodsData on 20 diets were screened from the UK Biobank. Lung cancer data came from a large meta-analysis of 85,716 individuals. The inverse-variance weighted method was used as the main analysis. Sensitivity analysis was also used to explain the different multiplicity patterns of the final model.ResultsOur results showed significant evidence that 3 diets were associated with lung cancer [odds ratio (OR): 0.271, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.150–0.488, p = 1.46 × 10−4, dried fruit; OR: 3.010, 95% CI: 1.608–5.632, p = 5.70 × 10−4, beer] and SqCLC (OR: 0.135, 95% CI: 0.062–0.293, p = 2.33 × 10−5, dried fruit; OR: 0.485, 95% CI: 0.328–0.717, p = 2.9 × 10−4, cheese). There were also suggestive correlations between 5 dietary intakes and lung cancer (OR: 0.441, 95% CI: 0.250–0.778, p = 0.008, cereal; OR: 2.267, 95% CI: 1.126–4.564, p = 0.022, beef), LA (OR: 0.494, 95% CI: 0.285–0.858, p = 0.012, dried fruit; OR: 3.536, 95% CI: 1.546–8.085, p = 0.003, beer) and SCLC (OR: 0.006, 95% CI: 0.000–0.222, p = 0.039, non-oily fish; OR: 0.239, 95% CI: 0.086–0.664, p = 0.006, dried fruit). No other association between diet and lung cancer was observed.ConclusionOur study preliminary found that cheese, dried fruit, and beer intake were significantly associated with the risk of lung cancer or its subtypes, while cereal, beef, and non-oily fish intake were suggestively associated with the risk of lung cancer or its subtypes. Well-designed prospective studies are still needed to confirm our findings in the future.

Background Osteoporosis (OP) is a major and growing public health problem characterized by decreased bone mineral density and destroyed bone microarchitecture. Previous studies found that Lycium Chinense Mill (LC) has a potent role in inhibiting bone loss. Kukoamine A (KuA), a bioactive compound extract from LC was responsible for the anti-osteoporosis effect. This study aimed to investigate the anti-osteoporosis effect of KuA isolated from LC in treating OP and its potential molecular mechanism. Method In this study, network pharmacology and molecular docking were investigated firstly to find the active ingredients of LC such as KuA, and the target genes of OP by the TCMSP platform. The LC-OP-potential Target gene network was constructed by the STRING database and network maps were built by Cytoscape software. And then, the anti-osteoporotic effect of KuA in OVX-induced osteoporosis mice and MC3T3-E1 cell lines were investigated and the potential molecular mechanism including inflammation level, cell apoptosis, and oxidative stress was analyzed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), micro-CT, ELISA, RT-PCR, and Western Blotting. Result A total of 22 active compounds were screened, and we found KuA was identified as the highest active ingredient. Glycogen Phosphorylase (PYGM) was the target gene associated with a maximum number of active ingredients of LC and regulated KuA. In vivo, KuA treatment significantly increased the bone mineral density and improve bone microarchitecture for example increased BV/TV, Tb.N and Tb.Th but reduced Tb.Sp in tibia and lumber 4. Furthermore, KuA increased mRNA expression of osteoblastic differentiation-related genes in OVX mice and protects against OVX-induced cell apoptosis, oxidative stress level and inflammation level. In vitro, KuA significantly improves osteogenic differentiation and mineralization in cells experiment. In addition, KuA also attenuated inflammation levels, cell apoptosis, and oxidative stress level. Conclusion The results suggest that KuA could protect against the development of OP in osteoblast cells and ovariectomized OP model mice and these found to provide a better understanding of the pharmacological activities of KuA again bone loss.

Gaussian graphical model is a strong tool for identifying interactions from metabolomics data based on conditional correlation. However, data may be collected from different stages or subgroups of subjects with heterogeneity or hierarchical structure. There are different integrating strategies of graphical models for multi-group data proposed by data scientists. It is challenging to select the methods for metabolism data analysis. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of several different integrating graphical models for multi-group data and provide support for the choice of strategy for similar characteristic data. We compared the performance of seven methods in estimating graph structures through simulation study. We also applied all the methods in breast cancer metabolomics data grouped by stages to illustrate the real data application. The method of Shaddox et al. achieved the highest average area under the receiver operating characteristic curve and area under the precision-recall curve across most scenarios, and it was the only approach with all indicators ranked at the top. Nevertheless, it also cost the most time in all settings. Stochastic search structure learning tends to result in estimates that focus on the precision of identified edges, while BEAM, hierarchical Bayesian approach and birth–death Markov chain Monte Carlo may identify more potential edges. In the real metabolomics data analysis from three stages of breast cancer patients, results were in line with that in simulation study.
