Optical fiber sensing is a promising detection method for spacecraft health monitoring, since optical fiber sensors are lightweight, small in size, easy to integrate and immune to electromagnetic interference. As a significant optical sensor, fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) are widely used for force sensing because of their axial strain characteristics. However, it is necessary to detect not only one-dimensional strain but also plane strain and its deformation in order to comprehensively evaluate the condition of the structure. Therefore, it is very important to analyze the reflection spectrum of FBG under lateral stress. When FBG are subjected to lateral stress, the refractive index of the waveguide in the x and y directions changes, resulting in a birefringence phenomenon. This result causes the reflection spectrum of FBG to split into two peaks. In this paper, a transverse stress detection method based on spectral split sensing for the fiber Bragg grating is proposed, intended for monitoring spacecraft–small particle collisions. The FBG local lateral stress detection system is designed and verified by experiments. The wavelength pressure correlation is established in the experiment by adjusting the number of weights to change the lateral pressure on the FBG. The loading range of FBG lateral pressure is 4.0–7.0 N, the step size is 0.5 N, and round-trip measurement is carried out four times. The wavelengths of the peak and split point of the FBG reflection spectrum are recorded. The experimental results show that FBG’s split point and right peak pressure sensitivities are 16.57 pm/N and 45.14 pm/N, respectively. The spectral splitting phenomenon can be applied in spacecraft structure health monitoring systems and has certain reference value for the simplification of sensor systems.

Taking the fiber ring of the core device of the fiber optic gyro as the research object, the temperature field simulation analysis of the fiber gyroscope was carried out by ANSYS finite element analysis software, and the structural optimization of the fiber gyroscope was carried out, which effectively improved the temperature field distribution uniformity of the fiber optic ring and reduced the overall thermal equilibrium temperature and time when the fiber gyro reached stability.

Evacuators are key components of gun barrels, and their main function is to drain the gunpowder gas remaining in the gun bore from the muzzle by ejection. To design an efficient evacuator for the gun barrels, an optimization model with the mathematical expressions describing the working process of the evacuator was established. The four structural parameters that affect the efficiency of the evacuator, including the volume of the gas storage cylinder chamber, the distance of the nozzle from the muzzle end face, the cross-sectional area of the nozzles and the cross-sectional area of the valves, were optimized. The effective working time and reliability indicator of the optimized evacuator were improved. This work describes a framework for improving the design of highly efficient evacuators on gun barrels.

Here, the three-dimensional (3D) shape monitoring of polyvinyl chloride (PVC)-reinforced silicone substrate for a morphing wing is detailed, using Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. An optical fiber FBG sensor was embedded into a soft silicone substrate, which was glued onto the surface of a PVC substrate. This substrate was aligned with the morphing wing’s flexible ribs of the. Sensing experiments were carried out both with and without the PVC reinforced silicone substrate, and the sensitivity and repeatability of the two sensors were compared. The PVC-reinforced silicone substrate sensor was calibrated using standard curvature calibration blocks to obtain a relationship between wavelength shift and the bending curvature of the PVC-reinforced silicone substrate, and the wing shape was reconstructed at different deformation states. Several wing shapes were also reconstructed using a precise visual measurement system. Comparing the FBG sensing method with this visual measurement system demonstrated the effectiveness of the FBG method proposed here. Its maximum error was

Considering the complex and variability of flight environment of the morphing aircraft, usually it is difficult to solve the real-time wing shape monitoring problem when the aircraft changes its motion state or suffering the wind and waves. In this paper, with the goal of supporting real-time wing shape monitoring of morphing aircraft, three-dimensional (3D) shape monitoring of polyimide film skin for morphing wing based on the embedded Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensor is designed and analyzed. Firstly, the sensitively of FBG sensors with different embedded depth in the polyimide film was analyzed, and the finding is that when the ratio value of upper/lower embedded depth is larger, the sensitively of FBG sensor is higher. Secondly, the wavelength of FBG sensors at different states were obtained, and the center wavelength shift of FBG sensors can be used to measure the bending curvatures of the wing, besides, according to the obtained bending curvatures, the 3D shape of polyimide skin of the morphing wing at different deformation states are reconstructed through interpolation and curve fitting functions. Moreover, several shape reconstruction experiments of the morphing wing were carried out with precise visual measurement, and the maximum error between FBG sensing and visual measurement is 5%. Consequently, the effectiveness of FBG sensing method for wing shape monitoring of morphing aircraft is demonstrated, as well as more potentiality and applicability for the shape monitoring in the field of soft robotics and flexible biosensor monitoring.

To meet the demands for curvature measurement in the field of biomedical intelligent equipment, soft robots and complex structures of major infrastructures, an optical fiber based soft curvature sensor is proposed. The major contribution is obtaining a soft curvature sensor with extraordinary high sensitivity and repeatability. A silicone rubber sheet is glued on the surface of polyvinyl chloride to form polyvinyl chloride (PVC) reinforced silicone rubber substrate, the fiber Bragg grating is embedded into the substrate to form the sensor. The sensor is calibrated using standard curvature calibration blocks. The characteristic of the reflected spectrum of the sensor is analyzed. The relation between the sensitivity and the fiber embedded depth is obtained. The research results prove that the real-time measurement of structure curvature can be realized by the sensor. The polyvinyl chloride reinforced silicone rubber substrate is helpful to improve the sensitivity and repeatability of the sensor. The maximum sensitivity is up to 329.2pm/m−1. The sensor has good consistency in repeated measurements, it has application presents in measuring the curvature of flexible mechanisms and complex structures.

A tunable C-band multi-wavelength ring cavity erbium-doped fiber laser based on a Sagnac loop and tunable filter was developed and experimentally demonstrated. In this fiber laser, a Sagnac loop fabricated using a 3 × 3 coupler and polarization-maintaining fiber is employed as the comb filter. A 4-m-long C-band and 0.8-m-long L-band erbium-doped fiber serve as the gain medium, and a tunable filter connected to the 3 × 3 coupler is used for laser wavelength adjustment. In the experiment described herein, switchable single-wavelength lasing was realized from 1528.6 nm to 1562.5 nm in 4.9-nm intervals, and the peak power variation was less than 1.12 dB during 10 min of scanning at 26 °C. In addition, switchable double- and triple-wavelength lasing were realized, for which the tunable wavelength scope was 28.6 nm and 19.9 nm, and the power fluctuation was less than 1.14 dB and 1.39 dB, respectively.

An optical fiber microdisplacement sensor based on symmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) with a seven-core fiber and two single-mode fiber balls is proposed. The rationality and manufacturing process of the MZI sensing structure are analyzed. The fabrication mechanism of the Mach-Zehnder sensor by CO2 laser is described in detail. Experimental results show that temperature sensitivities of the two dips are 98.65 pm/°C and 89.72 pm/°C, respectively. The microdisplacement sensitivities are 2017.71 pm/mm and 2457.92 pm/mm, respectively. The simultaneous measurement of temperature and microdisplacement is demonstrated based on the sensitive matrix. The proposed Mach-Zehnder interference sensor exhibits the advantages of compact structure, simple manufacturing process, and high reliability.

Numerous studies have addressed various methods to interrogate fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). However, conventional methods are ineffective for multipeak FBG demodulation. A core-and-cladding-integrated fiber Bragg grating (FBG) temperature-interrogation system, based on a modulated grating Y-branch (MG-Y) tunable laser and home-built FBG, is proposed in this study. The sensing system comprises an MG-Y tunable laser interrogation system, a 3-dB optical fiber coupler, a core-and-cladding-integrated FBG, a heating platform, and a personal computer. The core-and-cladding-integrated FBG with two reflection peaks is sampled by the designed MG-Y laser. The FBG has a period of 534 nm and a grating length of 2000 µm. It is fabricated in a single-mode fiber by femtosecond-laser writing through the fiber coating. The interrogator is suitable for temperature measurement via the core-and-cladding-integrated FBG. In tests of the temperature-interrogation system, a temperature change from 30 to 100 °C generates spectral shifts toward longer wavelengths for both the core and cladding reflection peaks. For the core and cladding, temperature sensing sensitivities of 111 and 113 pm/°C with linearities of 0.993 and 0.99, respectively, during heating and 117 and 120 pm/°C with linearity coefficients of 0.994 and 0.99, respectively, during cooling are achieved.

To reduce loads acting on artillery carriages and obtain better values of recoil resistance, a study on multiple attribute decision making with interval uncertainty of the liquid orifice of a recoil mechanism was conducted. Taking the dimensions of the liquid orifice as the uncertainty variables, the uncertainty optimization model and algorithm based on three parameter interval were used to achieve the optimization schemes of the throttling bar outer dimensions with different tolerance grades. The multiple optimization schemes were sorted by employing the multiple attribute decision making method, in which the attribute weights were determined based on the maximum deviation method. The results show that the optimal design scheme is the one which considers simultaneously the parameter design and tolerance design of the throttling bar outer diameters. The optimal interval of the recoil resistance peaks and the optimal recoil resistance curve with sufficient fullness and flatness were obtained. The study results are beneficial for artillery design and evaluation concerning both the manufacturability of artillery and particular requirements of recoil resistance.

A double-mass block acceleration sensor based on Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) is proposed to meet the needs of acceleration sensors in vibration monitoring. The proposed sensor is composed of FBG, beam and double mass block, and the FBG is fixed in the middle of the upper surface of the dual mass block by epoxy glue. Through theoretical analysis and experimental verification, the resonant frequency, sensitivity and lateral anti-interference ability of the sensor have been investigated. The experimental results show that the natural frequency of the sensor is 1000 Hz, the sensitivity is 26.7 pm/g when the frequency is 250 Hz, and the lateral anti-interference degree is less than 6%. And the sensor structure in this paper is simple and easy to fabricate. Therefore, it has a great application prospect in the vibration monitoring of bridges, roads and buildings.

Metallic packaging of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors is developed using the ultrasonic welding method. Both polyimide-coated fiber and bare fiber could be bonded well to aluminum alloy substrate using Sn-Bi alloy. Two kinds of metal-packaged FBG sensors, coated FBG and bare FBG, are characterized for studying the thermal sensitivity, strain response, short-term creep, and temporal temperature response. Both FBG sensors showed increasing sensitivity with temperature from −40°C to 80°C. The metal-packaged coated FBG sensor displayed relative strengths in strain stability, repeatability, creep, spectra shape, and temperature response when compared with the bare one. Moreover, the boundaries between optical fiber and metal alloy are intact, and cross-sectional scanning electron microscope micrographs clearly illustrated that metal alloy coated well with the coated and bare fiber.

The smart structures and skins have wide application prospects in future morphing aircrafts and spacecrafts and have attracted much attention in recent years. This paper proposes a stretchable sensing skin with S-shape multicore optical fiber implantation. Different from previous approaches, the multicore fiber with FBG sensor array is embedded into a super elastic substrate in S-shape to form a stretchable sensing skin. This S-shape configuration makes the optical fiber stretchable enough to deform with the skin, and using the multi-core configuration, various types of fiber sensors can be inscribed on different fiber cores to measure the skin shapes and external loads. The sensing characteristics of the skin and the shape sensing of a morphing wing prototype is demonstrated, and the nonlinear characteristics and relaxation of the sensing responses are analyzed. The 3D shapes of a morphing wing prototype are measured at four airfoil profiles using the stretchable sensing skin, the results are verified by visual measurements. The proposed stretchable sensing skin should have broad application prospects in future morphing flight vehicles.

It is widely known that a bimetal-pipe can be produced by internal hydraulic expansion. An inevitable limitation of which is that the elastic recovery of the outer pipe should be greater than that of the inner pipe when the forming pressure is released. And the existing techniques usually result in plastic deformation of the inner pipe. Considering the circumstance that elastic recovery of the inner pipe is greater than that of the outer pipe, or only elastic deformation in the inner pipe is allowed, an analytical model was developed to investigate the forming process of bimetal-pipes by external hydraulic contraction. The deformation compatibility condition of the bimetal-pipe was obtained according to the deformation rule. The formula relating the applied external hydraulic pressure and the residual contact pressure between the inner and the outer pipes was derived, and the lower and upper limits of the external hydraulic forming pressures were studied. A two-dimensional finite element analysis of the hydraulic contraction forming process of the bimetal-pipe was conducted. The comparison between the theoretical results and the finite element solutions shows that they are in good agreement. The presented methodology can be used in design and manufacturing of bimetal-pipes where the forming pressure should be applied on the outside surface.

A novel magnetic take-up roll used in amorphous alloy ribbon formation lines is introduced in this paper. The finite element method was used to calculate two different magnetic models for a selected amorphous ribbon. The simulation result showed that magnetic adhesion force can make the ribbon move toward and stay on the magnetic take-up roll. The tests indicated that the results measured complied with simulation ones. Moreover, the final design prototype test successfully satisfy the main objective of the project – to take up the ribbon – with a high success rate.

A Mach–Zehnder interferometer based on processed hollow-core fiber (HCF) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for gas pressure sensing. The fiber sensor is fabricated by splicing a segment of HCF between the two coreless fibers. One end of the HCF is processed into an open cavity, which allows gas pressure of the air-core to be equivalent to that of the external environment. Gas pressure change induces refractive index change of the air-core, thus the measurement of gas pressure can be achieved by monitoring wavelength shift of the interference pattern. The proposed fiber sensor exhibits a high gas pressure sensitivity of 9.35 nm / MPa in the range from 0.1 to 0.04 MPa and a temperature sensitivity of 30 pm / ° C in the range from 30°C to 90°C. Furthermore, the fiber sensor processes the advantages of compactness, low cost, and all-fiber configuration, which makes it suitable for gas pressure measurement.

An in-line optical fiber Mach–Zehnder interferometric (MZI) sensor is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for magnetic field measurement. The fabrication mechanism of the optical fiber microstructures by CO2 laser is described in detail. The sensor with symmetrical structure is fabricated by splicing a 7-mm length of seven-core fiber and two fiber peanuts, which is encapsulated with magnetic fluid in the capillary. The transmission spectrum of the MZI is modulated by the refractive index of the magnetic fluid, which is affected by the magnetic field. The experimental results indicate that the mode interference is sensitive to the magnetic field and different dips of the interference spectrum have different sensitivities. Hence, simultaneous measurement of the temperature and magnetic field can be achieved by simultaneously monitoring two different dips. The sensitivities of the magnetic field and temperature can reach up to 0.062 nm / Gs and 0.081 nm / ° C, respectively. The proposed Mach–Zehnder interference sensor has a more compact structure, simple manufacturing process, and high reliability, which would find potential applications in weak magnetic sensing fields.

It is difficult to achieve a stably delicate operation in manual microsurgery, and the aim of this paper is to evaluate the robotic trephination that can open a promising perspective for the development of robotic microsurgical system for keratoplasty. A robot for corneal trephination integrating a force/torque sensor is designed based on manual trephine action. The manual experiments and the robotic experiments about penetrating trephination are performed in porcine eyes. The expected values of operational parameters that are references to the robotic trephination are obtained from the manual experiments using probability density functions (PDFs), including linear velocity, angular velocity, and rotating angle. Considering the meanings of the forces/torques, the results of the manual and robotic experiments such as trephine forces/torques and photomicrographs are compared to evaluate the effectiveness of robotic trephination. The manual trephination shows some randomness and this leads to large fluctuations in the trephine forces/torques during the surgery, but the robot may improve overall outcome of the graft, as it is able to carry out the operation stably and produce a uniform cutting margin. There is potential to improve the biomechanical properties in the delicate microsurgery by using the trephine robot and such devices can assist the surgeon to achieve a consistently high-quality result.

The characterization of a fiber Bragg grating in pure-silica-core and Ge-doped-core optical fiber is demonstrated under tensile strain at different temperatures. The peak wavelength of the fiber Bragg grating increases slowly under tensile strain of 1000 µe when the temperature exceeds a certain value. The wavelength response of the pure-silica-core fiber Bragg grating is less sensitive under the same high-temperature strain as compared with the Ge-doped-core one. The results show a little predominance for the pure-silica-core fiber Bragg grating in high-temperature strain sensing. The two kinds of fiber Bragg grating are capable of measuring temperatures of up to 800 °C, but it is recommended that strain measurements are conducted below 500 °C to ensure good stability and repeatability.

The aim of this study is to propose a method to construct corneal biomechanical model which is the foundation for simulation of corneal microsurgery.Corneal material has two significant characteristics: hyperelastic and viscoelastic. Firstly, Mooney-Rivlin hyperelastic model of cornea obtained based on stored-energy function can be simplified as a linear equation with two unknown parameters. Then, modified Maxwell viscoelastic model of the cornea, whose analytical form is consistent with the generalized Prony-series model, is proposed from the perspective of material mechanics.Parameters of the model are determined by the uniaxial tensile tests and the stress-relaxation tests. Corneal material properties are simulated to verify the hyper-viscoelastic model and measure the effectiveness of the model in the finite element simulation. On this basis, an in vivo model of the corneal is built. And the simulation of extrusion in vivo cornea shows that the force is roughly nonlinearly increasing with displacement, and it is consistent with the results obtained by extrusion experiment of in vivo cornea. Conlusions: This paper derives a corneal hyper-viscoelastic model to describe the material properties more accurately, and explains the mathematical method for determination of the model parameters. The model is an effective biomechanical model, which can be directly used for simulation of trephine and suture in keratoplasty. Although the corneal hyper-viscoelastic model is taken as the object of study, the method has certain adaptability in biomechanical research of ophthalmology.
