Bacterial metabolism largely drives the sequestration of refractory organic matter in the ocean. However, a lack of understanding exists regarding the abundance and reactivity of bacterial particulate organic matter (POM). Here we report the bacterial contributions to suspended POM collected in the oligotrophic Western Pacific Warm Pool (WPWP). Around 27% of particulate organic carbon (POC) and ∼39% of particulate nitrogen (PN) in the surface ocean were derived from bacteria. Most of the bacterial POM (∼87%) was labile or semi-labile, and ∼85% of bacterial POM was removed between depths of ∼100–300 m. Bacterial POM constituted only ∼8% and ∼13% of refractory POC and PN, respectively. The rapid cycling of bacterial POM in upper waters was likely related to oligotrophic conditions and facilitated by higher temperatures in the WPWP. Taken together, these observations indicate that bacterial POM plays a crucial role in supplying energy for bacterial respiration. Various machine learning methods were attempted in the global mapping of surface ocean partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) to reduce the uncertainty of the global ocean CO2 sink estimate due to undersampling of pCO2. In previous research, the predictors of pCO2 were usually selected empirically based on theoretic drivers of surface ocean pCO2, and the same combination of predictors was applied in all areas except where there was a lack of coverage. However, the differences between the drivers of surface ocean pCO2 in different regions were not considered. In this work, we combined the stepwise regression algorithm and a feed-forward neural network (FFNN) to select predictors of pCO2 based on the mean absolute error in each of the 11 biogeochemical provinces defined by the self-organizing map (SOM) method. Based on the predictors selected, a monthly global 1∘ × 1∘ surface ocean pCO2 product from January 1992 to August 2019 was constructed. Validation of different combinations of predictors based on the Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas (SOCAT) dataset version 2020 and independent observations from time series stations was carried out. The prediction of pCO2 based on region-specific predictors selected by the stepwise FFNN algorithm was more precise than that based on predictors from previous research. Applying the FFNN size-improving algorithm in each province decreased the mean absolute error (MAE) of the global estimate to 11.32 µatm and the root mean square error (RMSE) to 17.99 µatm. 海洋生态环境保持健康状态是人类可持续开发利用海洋资源环境的基础，而近海海洋生态环境的健康状况综合评价可为海洋生态环境良性发展以及社会经济决策提供科学依据。首先对国际上3种代表性的海洋环境健康综合评价方法的应用特点进行了对比分析，并归纳了我国海洋生态环境健康评价的状况，在此基础上，以指标体系法重构了一个双核结构的综合评价框架，其中内核评价以海洋生态系统的自身状态为主，外核评价则主要反映海洋之于人类经济社会的贡献，以期能够科学、准确、全面的评价我国近海海洋环境健康状况。

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), due to their widespread usage as flame retardants and their lipophilicity and persistence, have become ubiquitous in the environment. It is urgent to understand the environmental characteristics of PBDEs in marine system, but they have attracted little attention. We summarize the available data and analyze the regional distributions, controlling factors, and congener patterns of PBDEs in marine and associated environmental matrixes worldwide. Based on meta-analysis, after separating the estuarial sites from the marine sites, ignoring the extraordinary sample sites such as those located just near the point source, the PBDE concentration levels are still in the same order of magnitude from global scale. Despite Principal Component Analysis, the congener patterns of sediments are predominant with the heavy brominated congeners (BDE-209 contributing over 75% to the total load) while the biota abound with the light ones (BDE-47, BDE-99, and BDE-100 taking about 80%). The ratio between BDE-99 and BDE-100 for the lower trophic-level species often turns to be greater than 1, while for those higher species the ratio may be below 1, and some species feed mainly on the crustaceans and zooplankton seems to have a higher ratio value. The data of the PBDEs in marine system are currently limited; thus, data gaps are identified as well.

Sediment quality triad(SQT),one of the important sediment quality assessment approaches,is defined as a conceptual and integrated technique based on biological response.It mainly comprises three complementary levels of evidence including sediment chemistry,laboratory sediment toxicity test and in situ benthic community structure.Each of the three traditional levels of evidence alone can independently reflect the environment risk of the contaminant in sediment by selecting suitable parameters.However,by combining these three levels of evidence,this approach can provide a comprehensive assessment in a weight of evidence means,which enhances the causal-effect relationship between the elevated chemical exposure and adverse biological effect,furthers the understanding of the ecology relevance between the hazardous materials and pollution levels.As consequences,it provides a robust basis for costal environmental control and remediation.Our objective is to focus on the newly advancement of SQT approach,draw experience and lessons to promote the coastal sediment quality assessment in China.This paper reviewed the history and development of the method detailed in 2 aspects including evidence composition,data simplification and interpretation method.We further investigated techniques to enhance the reliability of SQT evaluation and prospect for the method and application research in view of our country′s current status of coastal sediment quality assessment.Literature analysis shows that diversifying levels of evidence and improving data interpretation method can make evaluation result more reliable and understandable.SQT assessment can be more transparency by formalize and standardize the current interpretive tools,for instance,the tabular decision matrices.The SQT has been intensively used in the North America and frequently adopted as environmental management tools in European countries especially the Spain.It is one of the most applicable comprehensive assessment methods that the SQT intends to evaluate the adverse effect caused by chemical stressor in mediums like sediment.However,it should further develop to resolve and enhance the reliability,transparency of evaluation.

The increasing input of nutrients to lakes and estuaries by the anthropogenic activities has resulted in the aquatic eco-environment changes,such as the change of food chain,eutrophication and frequently seasonal hypoxia in bottom waters,which can be recorded in sediments.The biogenic elements and their stable isotopes in sediments are effective proxies to reflect the paleoproductivity and nutrient level in waters.The indicative significance of biogenic elements(C,N,P,Si) to the change of primary production,material sources and nutrient levels was reviewed in this paper.TOC,TN,δ13C,CaCO3 and BSi in sediments reflecting the content of organic matter and the growth of phytoplankton,can be used as effective proxies to indicate the primary production level.Source identification of organic matter by the differences of δ13C,δ15N and C/N values between different types of plants has important value to study the influence of anthropogenic activities on the aquatic environment and eutrophication.The increasing trend of TN,δ15N,TP and non-apatite phosphorus(NAIP) in sediments reflects the increasing input of terrestrial nitrogen and phosphorus to coastal waters.BSi can reflect the phytoplankton growth,and further indicate the Si concentration variations and eutrophication in waters.Biogenic elements are influenced by many factors in their deposition and burial,such as diagenesis and hydrodynamic conditions,which can disturb the sedimentary records of biogenic elements and then hinder the proper indication of environmental changes by these proxies.Consequently,in order to exactly understand the aquatic environmental changes,it is essential to comprehensively analyze the information of environmental changes provided by multiple biogenic element proxies and to fully consider the potential interference factors for the paleoenvironmental reconstructions.

The seasonal evolution of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and CO2 air-sea fluxes in the Jiaozhou Bay was investigated by means of a data set from four cruises covering a seasonal cycle during 2003 and 2004. The results revealed that DIC had no obvious seasonal variation, with an average concentration of 2035 µmol kg-1 C in surface water. However, the sea surface partial pressure of CO2 changed with the season. pCO2 was 695 µatm in July and 317 µatm in February. Using the gas exchange coefficient calculated with Wanninkhof’s model, it was concluded that the Jiaozhou Bay was a source of atmospheric CO2 in spring, summer, and autumn, whereas it was a sink in winter. The Jiaozhou Bay released 2.60 x 1011 mmol C to the atmosphere in spring, 6.18 x 1011 mmol C in summer, and 3.01 x 1011 mmol C in autumn, whereas it absorbed 5.32 x 1010 mmol C from the atmosphere in winter. A total of 1.13 x 1012 mmol C was released to the atmosphere over one year. The behaviour as a carbon source/sink obviously varied in the different regions of the Jiaozhou Bay. In February, the inner bay was a carbon sink, while the bay mouth and the outer bay were carbon sources. In June and July, the inner and outer bay were carbon sources, but the strength was different, increasing from the inner to the outer bay. In November, the inner bay was a carbon source, but the bay mouth was a carbon sink. The outer bay was a weaker CO2 source. These changes are controlled by many factors, the most important being temperature and phytoplankton. Water temperature in particular was the main factor controlling the carbon dioxide system and the behaviour of the Jiaozhou Bay as a carbon source/sink. The Jiaozhou Bay is a carbon dioxide source when the water temperature is higher than 6.6°C. Otherwise, it is a carbon sink. Phytoplankton is another controlling factor that may play an important role in behaviour as a carbon source or sink in regions where the source or sink nature is weaker. La evolución estacional del carbono inorgánico disuelto (DIC) y el intercambio de flujos de CO2 aire-mar en la bahía de Jiaozhou han sido investigados a partir de datos obtenidos en 4 campañas oceanográficas que cubren un ciclo estacional entre 2003 y 2004. It has been widely recognized that low silicate content in seawater is a major limiting factor to phytoplankton primary production in Jiaozhou Bay. However the reason of Si-limitation remains poorly understood. In the present study we measured the biogenic silicate content and discussed the accumulation of silicate in Jiaozhou Bay sediment. The results show that the biogenic silica content in the sediment of the Jiaozhou Bay is obviously much higher than those in the Yellow Sea and the Bohai Sea. The Bsi:TN ratios and BSi:16P ratios in the sediment are>1 and the OC:BSi ratio in sediment is lower than these of Redfield ratio (106∶16), indicating that the decomposition rate of OC is much higher than that for BSi in similar conditions. Therefore, the majority of the biogenic silicate was buried and thus did not participate in silicate recycling. Silicate accumulation in sediment may explain why Si limits the phytoplankton growth in the Jiaozhou Bay. Comparing the flux of biogenic silicate from sediments with primary production rate, it can be concluded that only 15.5% of biogenic silicate is hydrolyzed during the journey from surface to bottom in seawater, thus approximate 84.5% of biogenic silicate could reach the bottom. The silicate releasing rate from the sediment to seawater is considerably lower than that of sedimentation of biogenic silicate, indicating silicate accumulation in sediment too. In a word, the silicate accumulation in sediment is the key reason of silicate limiting to phytoplankton growth in Jiaozhou Bay.

Forty-eight surface sediments of the southern Yellow Sea are separated into three grain-size fractions. Four forms of extractable nitrogen (nitrogen in ion-exchangeable form (Nie), nitrogen in weak-acid extractable form (Nwa), nitrogen in strong-alkali extractable form (Nsa) and nitrogen in strong-oxidant form (Nso)) are obtained by the sequential extraction. The results show that the contents and the distributions of the extractable nitrogen in the southern Yellow Sea surface sediments are closely related to sediment grain size. The distributions of Nie, Nso and total nitrogen (TN) present positive correlations with fine particles content, while Nwa and Nsa does not have such correlation. The net contents of all the forms of nitrogen increase with sediment grain size finer.
