BACKGROUND: Removable partial dentures (RPDs) are widely used as a repair means and have a wide application scope. OBJECTIVE: To explore the effect of using design software in the preclinical teaching of removable partial dentures (RPDs). METHODS: Unreal Engine software was used to build the RPD framework design teaching and training software. All 131 undergraduate students majoring in stomatology in the class of 2018, Kunming Medical University, were randomly divided into three groups and received either traditional experiment teaching, flipped classroom teaching, or software teaching for RPD design. The application effect of the software in the preclinical teaching of RPD design was evaluated by analyzing the examination results and through the use of a questionnaire survey. RESULTS: The differences in the theoretical examination scores among the traditional teaching group, the flipped classroom group, and the software teaching group were not statistically significant (P> 0.05), while the average design scores of upper Kennedy Class I and lower Kennedy Class II subclass II in the software teaching group were significantly higher than those in the traditional teaching group (P< 0.05). Overall, 75% of the students in the software teaching group reported that this teaching method could improve their learning initiative, a higher percentage than in the traditional teaching group (55.8%, P< 0.05). Meanwhile, 90.9% of the students in the software teaching group reported that the software could make RPD-related theoretical knowledge more visual and intuitive, and 93.2% of these students felt it was helpful for understanding the RPD three-dimensional (3D) spatial structure. These percentages were higher than those in the traditional teaching and flipped classroom groups (P< 0.05). CONCLUSION: In the preclinical teaching of RPD design, software training helped the students better understand the 3D structure of RPDs and establish clear design ideas, and it may also be valuable for in-depth research and promotion purposes.

We directly measure the Fe(iii)-catalyzed SO2 conversion in single microdroplet trapped and levitated with a gradient-force aerosol optical tweezer. There was a significant acceleration in the formation of SO2 to sulfate conversion on the surface of the aerosol microdroplets.

The uncontrolled growth of lithium dendrites and accumulation of “dead lithium” upon cycling are among the main obstacles that hinder the widespread application of lithium metal anodes. Herein, an ionic liquid (IL) consisting of 1-methyl-1-propylpiperidinium cation (Pp13+) and bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide anion (FSI−), was chosen as the additive in propylene carbonate (PC)-based liquid electrolytes to circumvent the shortcoming of lithium metal anodes. The optimal 1% Pp13FSI acts as the role of electrostatic shielding, lithiophobic effect and participating in the formation of solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layer with enhanced properties. The in-situ optical microscopy records that the addition of IL can effectively inhibit the growth of lithium dendrites and the corrosion of lithium anode. This study delivers an effective modification to optimize electrolytes for stable lithium metal batteries.

Radiation-induced liver damage (RILD) is a spiny problem in radiotherapy or other circumstances that exposure to radiation. The need for radioprotective agent is increasing to protect liver tissue. This study aimed to explore the hepatoprotective effect of p-coumaric acid (CA) against RILD. C57BL/6 male mice were exposed to 4 Gy irradiation and administrated with CA for 4 days starting on the same day of irradiation. Mice were sacrificed to obtain blood and liver tissues on day 3.5 or 14 post irradiation, respectively. The blood and liver tissues were collected. As compared with the only irradiated group, CA supplementation improved liver morphology, decreased serum alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase, inhibited BCL2-associated X (BAX) protein expression, and improved the mice hematopoietic function. CA at the dose of 100 mg/kg body weight showed better effect compared to the other doses. Thus, CA might possess potential to protect against RILD.

In three-dimensional (3D) Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), the localization suffers from localization accuracy and computation efficiency problem due to added dimension compared with 2D WSNs. Aiming at localizing WSNs in 3D way, we propose a distributed cooperative localization method with optimized constraints. The optimized constraints effectively limit the potential range where the unknown nodes are limited. By analyzing the positions of anchors which are within the communication radius of unknown node, the initial positions of unknown nodes are geometrically estimated in several situations. They link with each other and form a 3D cooperative network. Based on message passing (MP) theory, we extend the 2D cooperative localization to 3D distributed cooperative localization. In this process, optimized constraints derived from hop information and RSSI avoid the gross error and large deviation in the localization. Simulation results in various scenarios show the improvement of accuracy and efficiency compared with traditional methods.

Accurately measuring the pH of atmospheric aerosols is a prerequisite for understanding the multiphase chemistry that profoundly affects the environment and climate systems. Despite the advancements of experimental techniques for in situ pH measurements in aerosols, current studies are limited to measuring the static pH of aerosol microdroplets with an unperturbed composition. This steady-state scenario, however, deviates from the real-world aerosols undergoing atmospheric aging reactions, specifically, those characterized with a spontaneous displacement of strong bases (or acids) with high volatility. Here, we introduce a continuous and in situ measurement of aerosol pH by using a 4-mercaptopyridine-functionalized silver nanoparticle probe and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. We find that the ammonium depletion─a spontaneous displacement of ammonium by dicarboxylic acid salts─continuously acidifies aerosol water over time. The decaying trends of pH in the aerosols under various humidity conditions can be unified with a universal exponential function. Such an exponentially decaying function further indicates that the ammonium depletion reaction is a self-limiting process. Our technique can be applied to study the dynamic change of aerosol acidity during the complex atmospheric aging processes, toward elucidating their implications on atmospheric chloride, nitrate, and ammonium cycles.

During the past decades, the rapid development of modern teaching tools and methods has been observed, and the new teaching module constructed through digitization or networking has been widely used in the field of medical education. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness and acceptability of the online learning combined with case-based discussion (CBD) approach in oral medicine education.Sixty senior students majoring in stomatology were randomly divided into two groups. One group (new module-based teaching group [NG], n = 30) watched an online teaching video and discussed clinical cases in groups. The control group (traditional lecture-based group [TG], n = 30) was assigned to the traditional lecture-based teaching. Subsequently, a theory assessment was conducted on the topics taught, and the scores of both groups were compared. Feedback about this teaching model was obtained from the NG.The results showed that students in the NG had significantly better performance in terms of mastering professional knowledge than did students in the TG. Moreover, most students in the NG had a high degree of satisfaction with this new teaching method, as they agreed that it can mobilize their learning enthusiasm and promote their engagement, interaction, and cooperation in the learning of oral medicine.Our findings indicate the effectiveness and high satisfaction of CBD combined with online learning in the teaching of oral medicine. This study is expected to provide new ideas for improving the dental teaching quality.

Chemical isotope labeling liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS) is an emerging metabolomic strategy for the quantification and characterization of small molecular compounds in biological samples. However, its subsequent data analysis is not straightforward due to a large amount of data produced and interference of biological matrices. In order to improve the efficiency of searching and identification of target endogenous metabolites, a new software tool for nontargeted metabolomics data processing called MS-IDF was developed based on the principle of a narrow mass defect filter. The developed tool provided two function modules, including IsoFinder and MDFinder. The IsoFinder function module applied a conventional peak extraction method by using a fixed mass differences between the heavy and light labels and by the alignment of chromatographic retention time (RT). On the other hand, MDFinder was designed to incorporate the accurate mass defect differences between or among stable isotopes in the peak extraction process. By setting an appropriate filter interval, the target metabolites can be efficiently screened out while eliminating interference. Notably, the present results showed that the efficiency in compound identification using the new MDFinder module was nearly doubled as compared to the conventional IsoFinder method (an increase from 259 to 423 compounds). Ceropegia jilongensis, a new species from Jilong, Xizang, China, is described and illustrated. This species is similar to C. hookeri, but clearly differs in its indumentum of pedicel and corolla tube, ovoid cage size, corolla lobes and interstaminal corona lobes shape. It is also similar to C. salicifolia and C. angustifolia, but easily distinguished by its leaf shape, peduncle length, indumentum of pedicel and corolla tube, interstaminal corona lobes shape. BackgroundWhether irAEs can predict the efficacy of PD-1 inhibitors in cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) has not been assessed. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the correlation between irAEs and the therapeutic effect of PD-1 inhibitors combination therapy in patients with advanced CCA.MethodsAll patients with CCA who were consecutively admitted to the inpatient unit of our hospital and received PD-1 inhibitors combination therapy between September 2020 and April 2022 were screened. In total, 106 patients with CCA were screened out. We then followed up these patients until October 2022. Due to perioperative use (n=28), less than 2 cycles of PD-1 inhibitor therapy (n=9), incomplete data (n=8) and no pathological report (n=2), 59 patients were included in the final analysis. The patients were divided into the irAEs cohort and the non-irAEs cohort according to whether they experienced irAEs or not. The Log-Rank test was performed to compare the difference in survival time between these two cohorts. We then applied multivariate COX regression analysis to investigate whether irAEs were independent prognostic factors for survival in patients with advanced CCA.ResultsFinally, 32 patients were included in the irAEs cohort and 27 patients in the non-irAEs cohort. A total of 32 patients (54.2%) had any-grade irAEs, of which 4 patients (6.8%) had grade 3-4 irAEs. The most common irAEs were thyroid toxicity (30.5%) and dermatologic toxicity (30.5%). There were no notable differences in demographics and clinical characteristics between the irAEs and non-irAEs cohorts, except for total bilirubin level (P=0.026) and relapse (P=0.016). The disease control rate (DCR) in the irAEs cohort was higher than in the non-irAEs cohort (90.6% vs 70.4%, P=0.047). Median overall survival (OS) and median progression-free survival (PFS) were better in the irAEs cohort than in the non-irAEs cohort (OS: 21.2 vs 10.0 months, PConclusionIrAEs correlated with improved DCR, OS, and PFS in advanced CCA patients receiving PD-1 inhibitors combination therapy.

Cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) participates in about 15% of clinical drug metabolism, and its polymorphism is associated with individual drug metabolism differences, which may lead to the adverse drug reactions (ADRs). In this study, 1163 Chinese Han individuals were recruited to investigate their distribution pattern of CYP2C9 gene and find out the variants that may affect their drug metabolic activities. We successfully developed a multiplex PCR amplicon sequencing method and used it for the genetic screening of CYP2C9 in a large scale. Besides the wild type CYP2C9*1, totally 26 allelic variants of CYP2C9 were detected, which included 16 previously reported alleles and 10 new non-synonymous variants that had not been listed on the PharmVar website. The characteristics of these newly detected CYP2C9 variants were then evaluated after co-expressing them with CYPOR in S. cerevisiae microsomes. Immunoblot analysis revealed that except for Pro163Ser, Glu326Lys, Gly431Arg and Ile488Phe, most of newly detected variants showed comparable protein expression levels to wild type in yeast cells. Two typical CYP2C9 probe drugs, losartan and glimepiride, were then used for the evaluation of metabolic activities of variants. As a result, 3 variants Thr301Met, Glu326Lys, and Gly431Arg almost lost their catalytic activities and most of other variants exhibited significantly elevated activities for drug metabolism. Our data not only enriches the knowledge of naturally occurring CYP2C9 variants in the Chinese Han population, but also provides the fundamental evidence for its potential clinical usage for personalized medicine in the clinic.

Background: Although ischemic stroke exhibits a high prevalence in the elderly population, the involved genes and pathways are poorly understood. In this study, we proposed to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and constructed a circular RAN (circRNA)/long noncoding RNA (lncRNA)/microRNA (miRNA)-mRNA network associated with the pathogenesis of ischemic stroke by using bioinformatics analysis. Methods: We constructed a rat model of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) and conducted total RNA and microRNA sequencing in brain specimens from MCAO and normal rats. Transcriptome-wide expression patterns were analyzed and DEGs were defined by applying Ballgown and a cut of log2-transformed fold-change (log2FC) ≥ 1 (or ≤ -1) with a P value < 0.05. We exploited Pearson correlation analysis to determine the association between the circRNA/lncRNA/mRNA network and miRNAs (P < 0.05 and corr ≤ -0.6), and the competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNA) interaction network was visualized with Cytoscape software and separated into subnetworks using the Molecular Complex Detection (MCODE) algorithm. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) were implemented for the pathway analysis of DEGs. Results: Upregulated DEGs were significantly enhanced in positive regulation of cell migration, response to wounding, blood vessel morphogenesis, inflammatory response, and cell activation; Downregulated DEGs were associated with control of the modulation of chemical synaptic transmission, synapse organization, regulation of membrane potential, and regulation of ion transport. KEGG-pathway analysis showed that DEG-enhanced pathways were associated with the pathways of TNF signaling pathway, Fluid shear stress and atherosclerosis, NF-kappa B signaling pathway, Lipid and atherosclerosis, Human cytomegalovirus infection, Osteoclast differentiation, Chemokine signaling pathway, IL-17 signaling pathway, Viral protein interaction with cytokine and cytokine receptor, and Cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction. We uncovered several novel lncRNAs (lnc_00231, lnc_002239, lnc_004172; and a novel_circ0001704), five miRNAs (miR-200b-3p, miR-223-3p, miR-200c-3p, miR-3084a-3p, and miR-664-2-5p), and the top-10 mRNAs (upregulated mRNAs were Pdgfa, Il1b, Gdf15, Fosl1, and Cxcl2; downregulated mRNAs were Prkar2b, Olfm3, Lrrc73, Tmem38a, and Dlgap3) that were involved in ischemic stroke. Conclusions: Through bioinformatic network analysis, we identified the underlying molecular mechanisms and key central genes that may contribute to an inflammatory response after cerebral infarction.

Objective Previous reports on the epidemiology, influencing factors, and the prognostic value of the components of PR interval in hospitalized heart failure patients were limited. Methods This study retrospectively enrolled 1182 patients hospitalized with heart failure from 2014 to 2017. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to explore the association between the components of PR interval and the baseline parameters. The primary outcome was all-cause death or heart transplantation. Multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazard regression models were constructed to explore the predictive value of the components of PR interval for the primary outcome. Results In multiple linear regression analysis, higher height (for every 10 cm increase in height: regression coefficient 4.83, P Conclusions In hospitalized patients with heart failure, longer PR segment was an independent predictor of the composite endpoint of all-cause death and heart transplantation, especially in the taller group, but it had limited significance in improving the prognostic risk stratification of this population.

Paeoniae Radix Alba (PRA), as a Traditional Chinese Medicine, is widely used in Chinese cuisine due to high health-benefits and nutrition, but the effect of different polarity of solvents on the extraction of antioxidant and hypoglycemic constituents, as well as the major active compounds remain unclear. In this research, 40, 70, and 95% ethanol were firstly applied to extract the polyphenols from PRA, the extraction yields, total phenolics, and total flavonoids content, free radical scavenging ability, α-glucosidase inhibition ability, and anti-glycation ability of extracts were evaluated spectroscopically. The oxidative damage protection, hypoglycemic activity, and alleviation on peripheral nerve damage were evaluated by H2O2-induced HepG2 cells and hyperglycemic zebrafish models. UPLC-QTOF-MS/MS was used to identify the major chemical constituents. The results showed that 40, 70, and 95% ethanol exhibited insignificant difference on the extraction of phenolics and flavonoids from PRA. All extracts showed promising DPPH⋅ and ABTS⋅+ scavenging ability, α-glucosidase inhibition and anti-glycation ability. In addition, PRA extracts could restore the survival rate of HepG2 cells induced by H2O2, and alleviate the oxidative stress by reducing the content of MDA and increasing the levels of SOD, CAT, and GSH-Px. The 70% ethanol extract could also mitigate the blood glucose level and peripheral motor nerve damage of hyperglycemic zebrafish. Thirty-five compounds were identified from 70% ethanol extract, gallotannins, gallic acid and its derivatives, and paeoniflorin and its derivatives were the dominant bioactive compounds. Above results could provide important information for the value-added application of PRA in functional food and medicinal industry.

Artemisia argyi is a widely distributed and inexpensive plant resource, and study on its chemical compositions and biological activities will provide an important basis for its food applications and pharmaceutical developments. In this study, fourteen known guaiane-type sesquiterpenes (1-14), four known eudesmane-type sesquiterpenes (15-18), two known germacranolide-type sesquiterpenes (19, 20), and eight other types of terpenoids (20-28) were isolated from the leaves of A. argyi by polyamide and ODS CC and HPLC. The structures of all compounds are determined by 1 D NMR (1H-NMR、13C-NMR) and literature comparison. Among them, compounds 1 and 8 were isolated from Chinese folk medicine A. argyi for the first time. Besides, the LPS-induced RAW264.7 cell model has been evaluated the anti-inflammatory activities in vitro by the Griess reagent. The results indicated that the guaianolide sesquiterpenoids obtained from A. argyi have an excellent ability to inhibit NO production, especially Argyin A, a guaianolide sesquiterpenoid with isovaleryloxy substitution.
