Lakes act as one of the reservoirs and dispersal routes of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and pathogenic resistant bacteria in aquatic environments. Previous studies reported the occurrence and distribution of ARGs in lakes worldwide; however, few investigated the biogeography and diversity patterns of antibiotic resistome in the environment. To fill this gap, a large-scale data set of sediment metagenomes was collected from globally distributed lakes and characterized comprehensively using metagenomic assembly-based analysis, aiming to shed light on the biogeography and diversity patterns of ARGs in lake ecosystems from a global perspective. Our analyses showed that abundant and diverse ARGs were found in the global lake sediments, including a set of emerging ARGs such as mcr-type and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae related genes. Most of the identified ARGs were generally associated with the commonly used antibiotics, suggesting the role of increasing antibiotic consumptions on the resistome prevalence. Spatially, the composition and diversity of ARGs varied across geographical distances and exhibited a scale-dependent distance-decay relationship. Notably, the composition of ARGs was largely shaped by bacterial community structure, and their diversities were co-governed by stochastic process (∼48%) and deterministic process (∼52%). Findings provide a valuable insight to better understand ecological mechanisms of ARGs in lake ecosystems and have important implication for the prevention and control of resistome risk.

Hexavalent chromium Cr(Ⅵ) is one of the most hazardous oxygen-containing anions to human health and the environment. Adsorption is considered to be an effective method for the removal of Cr(Ⅵ) from aqueous solutions. Based on an environmental perspective, we used renewable biomass cellulose as carbon source and chitosan as functional material to synthesize chitosan coated magnetic carbon（ MC@CS ）Materials. The synthesized chitosan magnetic carbons are uniform in diameter (~20 nm) and contain a large number of abundant hydroxyl and amino functional groups on the surface, meanwhile owning excellent magnetic separation properties. The MC@CS exhibited high adsorption capacity (83.40 mg/g) at pH 3 and excellent cycling regeneration ability when applied to Cr(VI) removal in water, removal rate of Cr(VI) (10mg/L) was still over 70% after 10 cycles. FT-IR and XPS spectra shows that electrostatic interaction and reduction with Cr (VI) are the main mechanisms of Cr (VI) removal by MC@CS nanomaterial. This work provide an environment-friendly adsorption material that could be reused for the removal of Cr(VI) in multiple cycles.

Underwater robot perception is a critical task. Due to the complex underwater environment and low quality of optical images, it is difficult to obtain accurate and stable target position information using traditional methods, making it unable to meet practical use requirements. The relatively low computing power of underwater robots prevents them from supporting real-time detection with complex model algorithms for deep learning. To resolve the above problems, a lightweight underwater target detection and recognition algorithm based on knowledge distillation optimization is proposed based on the YOLOv5-lite model. Firstly, a dynamic sampling Transformer module is proposed. After the feature matrix is sparsely sampled, the query matrix is dynamically shifted to achieve the purpose of targeted attention modeling. Additionally, the shared kernel parameter convolution is used to optimize the matrix encoding and simplify the forward-propagation memory overhead. Then, a distillation method with decoupled localization and recognition is designed in the model-training process. The ability to transfer the effective localization knowledge of the positive sample boxes is enhanced, which ensures that the model maintains the same number of parameters to improve the detection accuracy. Validated by real offshore underwater image data, the experimental results show that our method provides an improvement of 6.6% and 5.0% over both baseline networks with different complexity models under the statistical index of detection accuracy mAP, which also suggests 58.8% better efficiency than models such as the standard YOLOv5. Through a comparison with other mainstream single-stage networks, the effectiveness and sophistication of the proposed algorithm are validated.

The performance of underwater target detection algorithms is affected by poor imaging quality in underwater environments. Due to the arithmetic power limitation of underwater devices, existing deep learning networks are unable to provide efficient detection processes with high detection accuracy. Lightweight CNN models have been actively applied for underwater environment detection, yet their lite feature fusion networks cannot provide effective fusion effects and reduce the detection accuracy. In this paper, a lightweight algorithm based on multi-scale feature fusion was proposed, with the model parameters greatly reduced, improving the target detection accuracy. The forward propagation memory overhead is reduced by using multi-scale shared convolutional kernels and pooling operations to co-construct the query matrix in the Tansformer encoding stage. Then, the feature fusion path is optimized in order to enhance the connection of multi-scale features. A multiscale feature adaptive fusion strategy is used to enhance the detection performance and reduce the dependence on the complex feature extraction network. The feature extraction network is also reparameterized to simplify the operation. Using the UPRC offshore dataset for validation, the study results have demonstrated that the statistical mAP metrics validate the detection accuracy. Compared with SSD, RetinaNet and YOLOv5-s improved by 13%, 8.6%, and 0.8%, while the number of parameters decreased by 76.09%, 89.74%, and 87.67%. In addition, compared with the YOLOv5-lite model algorithm with the same parameter volume, the mAP is improved by 3.8%, which verifies the accuracy and efficiency of the algorithm in this paper.

The composition, function, and assembly mechanism of the bacterial community are the focus of microbial ecology. Unsupervised machine learning may be a better way to understand the characteristics of bacterial metacommunities compared to the empirical habitat types. In this study, the composition, potential function, and assembly mechanism of the bacterial community in the arid river were analysed. The Dirichlet multinomial mixture method recognised four ecotypes across the three habitats (biofilm, water, and sediment). The bacterial communities in water are more sensitive to human activities. Bacterial diversity and richness in water decreased as the intensity of human activities increased from the region of water II to water I. Significant differences in the composition and potential function profile of bacterial communities between water ecotypes were also observed, such as higher relative abundance in the taxonomic composition of Firmicutes and potential function of plastic degradation in water I than those in water II. Habitat filtering may play a more critical role in the assembly of bacterial communities in the river biofilm, while stochastic processes dominate the assembly process of bacterial communities in water and sediment. In water I, salinity and mean annual precipitation were the main drivers shaping the biogeography of taxonomic structure, while mean annual temperature, total organic carbon, and ammonium nitrogen were the main environmental factors influencing the taxonomic structure in water II. These results would provide conceptual frameworks about choosing habitat types or ecotypes for the research of microbial communities among different niches in the aquatic environment.

Background Riverine ecosystems are one of the most important reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment, but the occurrence and controlling factors of ARG distribution in different habitats of riverine ecosystems remain poorly understood. In this study, a metagenomic approach was used to characterize ARG types and their abundance in different habitats (rhizosphere soil, surface bulk soil, bottom bulk soil, and sediment) of riverine ecosystems in eastern China. Sampling sites were located along different rivers of eastern China, which are geographically isolated. Differences in bacterial communities, mobile genetic elements (MGEs), pattern and intensity of human activities, climate, and other environmental factors at the sampling sites and habitats were expected to affect ARG occurrence. Results ARGs were observed with high variations in diversity (44–206 subtypes) and abundance (6.85–105.68 ×/Gb). There were significant south-north differences in ARG occurrence in the same habitat, except for surface bulk soil. And the significant difference was found in ARGs among four southern habitats. South–north differences in ARGs of the same habitat were mainly attributed to the combination of different occurrence frequencies and habitat selections of ARGs. Differences in ARG profiles among the four habitats in the south and the north were both mainly attributed to the different occurrence frequencies of ARGs. Bacterial communities and MGEs (Mobile genetic elements) could account for the observed variance in the resistome of riverine ecosystems across eastern China. The co-occurrences of specific ARGs with bacterial communities and MGEs were more frequent at the northern sampling sites than in the south, and co-occurrence patterns (i.e. ARGs and bacterial communities or ARGs and MGEs) varied between the habitats. Moreover, building land in all habitats, except bulk soils, showed significant positive correlations with ARG abundance. Conclusion This study reveals a high variance in the resistome of riverine ecosystems in eastern China and its controlling factors. We appeal to the importance of assessment of ARGs in the riverine ecosystem and the need for future prevention and intervention of ARG spread.

The aquatic environment is an important medium for the accumulation and dissemination of antibiotic-resistant bacteria as it is often closely related to human activities. Previous studies paid little attention to the prevalence and mechanism of polymyxin-resistant bacteria in the aquatic environment. As a Gram-negative opportunistic pathogen widely distributed in aquatic ecosystems, the antibiotic-resistant profile of Aeromonas spp. deserves much attention. In this study, we identified 61 Aeromonas spp. isolates from water samples in the section of the Yangtze River. The total polymyxin B (PMB) resistance rate of these strains was 49.18% (30/61), showing a high level of polymyxin resistance in Aeromonas spp. The MIC50 and MIC90 for PMB exhibited a significant discrepancy among different species (p 50 and MIC90 for PMB in the Aeromonas hydrophila were 128 mg/L and above 128 mg/L while in Aeromonas caviae and Aeromonas veronii, the MIC50 and MIC90 value were both 2 mg/L. Only two A. veronii strains (MIC = 2 mg/L) and one A. caviae strain (MIC = 0.5 mg/L) were identified as carrying mobilized polymyxin resistant gene mcr-3.42, and mcr-3.16. All mcr genes were located in the chromosome. This is the first report that the downstream region of mcr-3.42 was the truncated mcr-3-like gene separated by the insertion sequences of ISAs20 (1,674 bp) and ISAs2 (1,084 bp). Analysis of epidemiology of mcr-positive Aeromonas genomes from GenBank database showed that the genus Aeromonas and the aquatic environment might be the potential container and reservoir of mcr-3. By the whole-genome sequencing and qRT-PCR, we inferred that the sequence differences in the AAA domain of MlaF protein and its expression level among these three species might be involved in the development of polymyxin resistance. Our study provided evidences of the possible mechanism for the variety of polymyxin susceptibility in different species of the genus Aeromonas and a theoretical basis for the surveillance of the aquatic environment.

This study conducted the first extensive and comprehensive investigation of the whole-scale sedimentary antibiotic concentration, possible drivers, environmental fate, and potential ecological risks in the Yangtze River. Totally, 20 antibiotics were detected in the sediments. Results revealed that the order of antibiotic abundance in sediment was fluoroquinolonestetracyclinesmacrolidessulfonamidesamphenicols. Scientific understanding of biotic effects on the water trophic level is lacking for urban lakes during algal bloom development stage. Based on the Illumina MiSeq sequencing, quantitative PCR, and multiple statistical analyses, we estimated distribution patterns and ecological roles of planktonic bacteria and eukaryotes in urban lakes during algal bloom development stage (i.e., April, May, and June). Cyanobacteria and Chlorophyta mainly dominated algal blooms. Bacteria exhibited significantly higher absolute abundance and community diversity than eukaryotes, whereas abundance and diversity of eukaryotic rather than bacterial community relate closely to the water trophic level. Multinutrient cycling (MNC) index was significantly correlated with eukaryotic diversity rather than bacterial diversity. Stronger species replacement, broader environmental breadth, and stronger phylogenetic signal were found for eukaryotic community than for bacterial community. In contrast, bacterial community displayed stronger community stability and environmental constraint than eukaryotic community. Stochastic and differentiating processes contributed more to community assemblies of bacteria and eukaryotes. Our results emphasized that a strong linkage between planktonic diversity and MNC ensured a close relationship between planktonic diversity and the water trophic level of urban lakes. Our findings could be useful to guide the formulation and implementation of environmental lake protection measures.

C-SAAoa particles synthesized by simple and low-cost calcining industrial solid waste aluminium ash combined with waste oxalic acid modification process show excellent performance in fluoride removal speed and adsorption capacity. Their adsorption capacity on fluoride was determined at about 180.57 mg/g at pH 3.0, which was among the highest reported values in the literature. It was determined that the adsorption mechanism of fluoride on C-SAAoa particles followed mechanisms such as ion exchange, electrostatic action, and the surface - OH groups played a major role in the fluoride removal process. C-SAAoa particles can effectively remove fluoride, even in the presence of a certain concentration of competing anions. At the same time, the material possesses good cycling performance, and can still maintain 78.9% of the initial adsorption capacity in the longitudinal for eight recycles. Therefore, it may have the potential to become a promising adsorbent as a supplement to industrial solid waste resource-based utilization processes and also for fluoride removal in small-scale treatment facilities or wastewater with high fluoride concentrations.

Disentangling the biogeographic patterns of rare and abundant microbes is essential in order to understand the generation and maintenance of microbial diversity with respect to the functions they provide. However, little is known about ecological assembly processes and environmental adaptation of rare and abundant microbes across large spatial-scale wetlands. Using Illumina sequencing and multiple statistical analyses, we characterized the taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity of rare and abundant bacteria and fungi in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau wetland soils. Abundant microbial taxa exhibited broader environmental thresholds and stronger phylogenetic signals for ecological traits than rare ones. By contrast, rare taxa showed higher sensitivity to environmental changes and closer phylogenetic clustering than abundant ones. The null model analysis revealed that dispersal limitation belonging to stochastic process dominated community assemblies of abundant bacteria, and rare and abundant fungi, while variable selection belonging to deterministic process governed community assembly of rare bacteria. Neutral model analysis and variation partitioning analysis further confirmed that abundant microbes were less environmentally constrained. Soil ammonia nitrogen was the crucial factor in mediating the balance between stochasticity and determinism of both rare and abundant microbes. Abundant microbes may have better environmental adaptation potential and are less dispersed by environmental changes than rare ones. Our findings extend knowledge of the adaptation of rare and abundant microbes to ongoing environmental change and could facilitate prediction of biodiversity loss caused probably by climate change and human activity in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau wetlands.

Microplastics provide new microbial niches in aquatic environments. Nevertheless, information on the assembly processes and potential ecological mechanisms of bacterial communities on microplastics from reservoirs is lacking. Here, we investigated the assembly processes and potential ecological mechanisms of bacterial communities on microplastics through full-length 16S rRNA sequencing in the Three Gorges Reservoir area of the Yangtze River, compared to water and sediment. The results showed that the Burkholderiaceae were the dominant composition of bacterial communities in microplastics (9.95%), water (25.14%), and sediment (7.22%). The niche width of the bacterial community on microplastics was lower than those in water and sediment. For the microplastics and sediment, distance-decay relationship results showed that the bacterial community similarity was significantly decreased with increasing geographical distance. In addition, the spatial turnover rate of the bacterial community on microplastics along the ~662-km reaches of the Yangtze River in the Three Gorges Reservoir area was higher than that in sediment. Null model analysis showed that the assembly processes of the bacterial community on microplastics were also different from those in water and sediments. Dispersal limitation (52.4%) was the primary assembly process of the bacterial community on microplastics, but variable selection was the most critical assembly process of the bacterial communities in water (47.6%) and sediment (66.7%). Thus, geographic dispersal limitation dominated the assembly processes of bacterial communities on microplastics. This study can enhance our understanding of the assembly mechanism of bacterial communities caused by the selection preference for microplastics from the surrounding environment. IMPORTANCE In river systems, microplastics create new microbial niches that significantly differ from those of the surrounding environment. However, the potential relationships between the biogeographic distribution and assembly processes of microbial communities on microplastics were still not well understood. This study could help us address the lack of knowledge about the assembly processes of bacterial communities on microplastics caused by selection from the surrounding environment. In this study, strong geographic dispersal limitation dominated assembly processes of bacterial communities on microplastics, compared to water and sediment, which may be responsible for the microplastic bacterial richness, and the niche distance was lower than those in water and sediment. In addition, sediment may be the main potential source of bacterial communities on microplastics in the Three Gorges Reservoir area, which makes higher community similarity between microplastics and sediment than between microplastics and water.

Rivers play an important role in receiving and transporting the resistome among different environmental compartments. However, the difference in resistome and mobilome between the water and sediment and their underlying mechanisms were still poorly understood. In this study, the Ili River, an important water source in the arid area of Central Asia, was selected as the studied target. The comprehensive profile of resistome and mobilome and their host in water and sediment were studied based on metagenomic binning and assembled genome (MAG) analysis. The relative abundance of resistome and mobilome in sediment were 28.0 - 67.8 × /Gb and 46.5 - 121.1 × /Gb, respectively, which were significantly higher than those in water (23.1 - 52.8 ×/Gb and 25.3 - 67.7 ×/Gb). Multidrug and macrolides-lincosamides-streptogramin (MLS) resistance genes were the main ARG types in both water and sediment from relative abundance. Transposases dominated the relative abundance of mobilome, followed by insert elements and integrases. Strong correlations were found between the relative abundance of resistome and mobilome (r 0.6 and p 0.01) in both water and sediment, indicating the mobilome played an important role in the propagation of resistome in the Ili River. The main hosts for multidrug resistance genes via MAG analysis differed in water (Alphaproteobacteria and Gammaproteobacteria) and sediment (Gammaproteobacteria). Distinct compositions of resistome and mobilome existed between water and sediment in the Ili River. Specificity-occupancy analysis of the differential resistome and mobilome showed that occurrence frequencies and habitat selections of the differential ARGs shaped the resistome of water and sediment. In contrast, habitat was the main driver that shaped the mobilome in the Ili River.

Background: Gastroduodenal anastomotic leakage is one of the most dreadful complications of gastrectomy and poses a great threat for treatment. However, there has been no effective treatment for it up to now. We report a case, a patient with huge gastroduodenal anastomotic leakage, was eventually recovered after conservative treatment up front and later resolution of anastomotic obstruction through gastrojejunostomy and jejunostomy.Methods and results: A 50-year-old man underwent a distal gastrectomy for a giant penetrating ulcer in the lesser curvature of the gastric sinus. Digestive reconstruction was completed by the Billroth I method. But an anastomotic leakage occurred on postoperative day 9 and a high output of duodenal juice was observed, and the following gastroscopy suggested that there was a large breach in the gastroduodenal anastomosis. Because of the patency of the drainage tube and the limitations of the patient's condition, conservative treatment was advocated and a nasojejunal tube was placed under the gastroscope for enteral nutrition. Unexpectedly, during subsequent treatment, persistent hypothermia associated with rheumatoid arthritis, drainage-associated transverse colon leakage and anastomotic stenosis occurred. Eventually, after taking the gastrojejunostomy and jejunostomy and gradually withdrawing and flushing the drainage tube, the patient was able to achieve a tube-free state and eat in the normal way.Conclusion: The course of the patient’s treatment was continuous and systematic. In this case, we found that conservative treatment was feasible for giant gastroduodenal anastomotic leakage in the presence of patent drainage and limited physical signs. And for secondary anastomotic stenosis, gastrojejunostomy can effectively relieve the obstruction.

Background: In sphincter-preserving surgery for low rectal cancer, it is significant to reduce the number of stapler cartridges and the incidence of anastomotic leakage. On this basis, we have developed a safer and more economical technique— pushing the anus in laparoscopic radical resection of low rectal cancer.Method: From January 2015 to July 2020, 213 consecutive patients with rectal cancer received laparoscopic radical surgery. For 151 of these patients, the surgeon used the stapler cartridges (Ethicon Intraluminal Linear Staplers EC60A, Ethicon, USA) to transect the edge of tumor of the rectum (Conventional Surgery Group). And for another 62 patients, besides applying the stapler cartridges, the surgeon had the assistants push the anus forward from the perineum during the process of transecting the rectum (Pushing the Anus Group). The postoperative outcomes and complications were compared between the two groups.Results: In terms of the number of the stapler cartridges, the Pushing the Anus Group was less than the Conventional Surgery Group (PConclusions: With pushing the anus forward during the process of transecting the rectum, the sphincter-preserving surgery can be performed more safely and economically.

Abuse of heavy metals and antibiotics results in the dissemination of metal resistance genes (MRGs) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Ditch wetlands are important sinks for heavy metals and antibiotics. The relationships between bacterial communities and MRG/ARG dissemination under dual stresses of heavy metals and antibiotics remain unclear. The responses of MRGs and ARGs to the co-selective pressure of cadmium (Cd) and doxycycline (DC) in ditch wetlands were investigated after 7-day and 84-day exposures. In ecological ditches, residual rates of Cd and DC varied from 0.4 to –5.73% and 0 to –0.61%, respectively. The greatest total relative abundance of ARGs was observed in the Cd 5 mg L–1 + DC 50 mg L–1 group. A significant level of DC (50 mg L–1) significantly reduced the total relative abundances of MRGs at a concentration of 5 mg L–1 Cd stress. Redundancy analysis indicated that Cd and DC had strong positive effects on most ARGs and MRGs after a 7-day exposure. Meanwhile, the class 1 integron gene (intI1) exhibited strong positive correlations with most ARGs and cadmium resistance genes (czcA) after an 84-day exposure. Network analysis showed that Acinetobacter and Pseudomonas were the potential dominant host genera for ARGs and MRGs, and tetracycline resistance genes (tetA), czcA, and intI1 shared the same potential host bacteria Trichococcus after an 84-day exposure.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the significant global issues to public health. Compared to other aquatic environments, research on AMR in groundwater is scarce. In the study, a meta-analysis was conducted to explore the characteristics and risks of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in global groundwater, using a data set of antibiotic concentrations collected from publications during 2000-2021 and a large-scale metagenomes of groundwater samples (n = 330). The ecotoxicological risks of antibiotics in the global groundwater were evaluated using mixture risk quotient with concentration addition model to consider the synergistic effects of multiple antibiotics. Bioinformatic annotations identified 1413 ARGs belonging to 37 ARG types in the global groundwater, dominated by rifamycin, polyketide, and quinolone resistance genes and including some emerging ARGs such as mcr-family and carbapenem genes. Relatively, the level of ARGs in the groundwater from spring was significantly higher (ANOVA, p0.01) than those from the riparian zone, sand and deep aquifer. Similarly, metal resistance genes (MRGs) were prevalent in the global groundwater, and network analysis suggested the MRGs presented non-random co-occurrence with the ARGs in such environments. Taxonomic annotations showed Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Eukaryota, Acidobacteria and Thaumarchaeota were the dominant phylum in the groundwater, and the microbial community largely shaped profile of ARGs in the environment. Notably, the ARGs presented co-occurrence with mobile genetic elements, virulence factors and human bacterial pathogens, indicating potential dissemination risk of ARGs in the groundwater. Furthermore, an omics-based approach was used for health risk assessment of antibiotic resistome and screened out 152 risk ARGs in the global groundwater. Comparatively, spring and cold creek presented higher risk index, which deserves more attention to ensure the safety of water supply.

Core microbiota is shared microbial taxa within the same habitat, which is important for understanding the stable and consistent components of the complex microbial assembly. However, information on the microplastic core bacteria from the river ecosystems is poor. Here, we investigated the composition and function of microplastic core bacteria from the Three Gorges Reservoir area along the approximate 662 km of the Yangtze River via full-length 16S rRNA gene sequencing, compared with those in water, sediment, and soil. The results showed that the spatial turnover of bacterial communities in four habitats supported deterministic processes dominated by niche differentiation, which shaped their core bacteria. The composition and function of microplastic core bacteria were significantly different from those in the other three habitats. Rhodobacteraceae was the main component of microplastic core bacteria, while the main component of core bacteria in water, sediment, and soil were Burkholderiaceae (21.90%), Burkholderiaceae (5.01%), Nitrosomonadaceae (4.61%), respectively. Furthermore, microplastic core bacteria had stronger geographic limitations along the Yangtze River in the Three Gorges Reservoir area. Stronger geographic limitations shaped the rapid community turnover and a potentially more connected network for the microplastic core bacteria than water, sediment, and soil. More importantly, microplastic core bacteria had strong potential functions of drug resistance and could cause risks to ecosystems and human health. Microplastic core bacteria were mainly influenced by sediment core bacteria, although the bacteria colonizing on microplastics could be from all the contact environments and original sources. These findings provide important insights into the composition, function, and association of microplastic core bacteria with their surrounding environment.

In this research, the capabilities of culture supernatants generated by the oxalate-producing fungus Aspergillus niger for the bioprecipitation and biorecovery of cobalt and nickel were investigated, as was the influence of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) on these processes. The removal of cobalt from solution was >90% for all tested Co concentrations: maximal nickel recovery was >80%. Energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDXA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the formation of cobalt and nickel oxalate. In a mixture of cobalt and nickel, cobalt oxalate appeared to predominate precipitation and was dependent on the mixture ratios of the two metals. The presence of EPS together with oxalate in solution decreased the recovery of nickel but did not influence the recovery of cobalt. Concentrations of extracellular protein showed a significant decrease after precipitation while no significant difference was found for extracellular polysaccharide concentrations before and after oxalate precipitation. These results showed that extracellular protein rather than extracellular polysaccharide played a more important role in influencing the biorecovery of metal oxalates from solution. Excitation–emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy showed that aromatic protein-like and hydrophobic acid-like substances from the EPS complexed with cobalt but did not for nickel. The humic acid-like substances from the EPS showed a higher affinity for cobalt than for nickel.

Coal dust from open-cast mines is a significant air pollutant; thus, dust particles and toxins contained in the dust are a severe threat to human health and ecosystems. Microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) is a low-cost and environmentally friendly way to suppress coal dust. With high urease activity and tolerance to coal dust, a bacterial strain, Staphylococcus succinus J3, was isolated from soil in a mine area. Thus, in dust suppression experiments, we used coal dust dominated by fine granule particles (100-250 μm) from an open-cast mine. Consequently, four factors were identified: initial bacterial biomass, calcium concentration, urea concentration, and spraying frequency; we investigated their effects on MICP as a dust suppression technique using one-factor-at-a-time experiments. Maximum threshold broken wind speed (45.5 m s-1) and pressure (912 kPa) were obtained under the following condition: OD600 = 0.7, 40 mmol calcium, 6% (w/w) urea in the bonding solution which was sprayed five times in 35 days. Pearson correlation analysis described that urea concentration and spraying frequency both significantly positive correlations with the threshold broken wind speed and pressure via Pearson analysis. When the coal dust suppression process was complete, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy showed that a solidified layer of calcareous precipitate had formed on the surface of the dust. These results indicate that Staphylococcus succinus J3 has considerable potential for use in MICP as a coal dust suppression technique.
