The goal of this study is to assess the degree to which false alarms to critical lures in the DRM word-list paradigm is attributable to a false memory effect vs. a decision strategy. If false alarms to critical lures are truly a false memory effect, then the false alarm rate should be similar regardless if a person establishes a conservative vs. liberal criterion. However, if false alarms to critical lures are a result of strategic decision making (e.g. using a liberal criterion when critical lures are presented), then the false alarm rate to critical lures should be substantially lower when participants maintain a conservative vs. liberal criterion. Since some individuals do not adequately shift criteria when it is advantageous to do so, participants will conduct a separate recognition memory task for images to assess how well these individuals generally shift criteria in a non-DRM paradigm to serve as a comparison.
