False killer whales (FKWs; Pseudorca crassidens) are found in deep waters of temperate and tropical oceans worldwide. This species is considered near threatened and global populations’ trends are unknown although there is evidence of decline of various populations. The mass stranding of cetaceans remains an intriguing event and often the cause(s) are unclear or poorly investigated. In Brazil, cetacean mass strandings have been recorded yet they have not been investigated. In this study, we aimed to report the epidemiologic features of a mass stranding event involving 30 live FKWs occurred in northeastern Brazil in 2013. Releasing attempts and posterior monitoring data indicated successful outcome for 24 of 30 FKWs. Postmortem pathologic investigations confirmed live-stranding stress response and intestinal (Bolbosoma sp.) and otic (Stenurus sp.) endoparasitism. Toxicologic analyzes detected high concentrations of total mercury in liver correlating with liver damage, as indicated by elevated transaminases. In this mass stranding, key factors were early notification, organizational and operational framework, trained and sufficient personnel, resources and equipment, government support, and strategy and decision making. These results underscore the benefits of a rapid marine mammal network response, the importance of integrative multidisciplinary investigations, and set baseline information for mass strandings of cetaceans in Brazil.

Brazil has a coast that is threatened by economic activities and accelerated urbanisation process, causing ecosystem unbalance and decreasing socioenvironmental quality. We analysed data collected from 2010 to 2019 during the Beach Monitoring Project in north-eastern Brazil to quantify sea turtle strandings with signs of anthropogenic interaction, verify the impact of economic activities on the strandings, and analyse a possible relation between socioeconomic conditions and the strandings. Anthropogenic interaction was classified into 12 categories (eight related to fishing activities). We analysed 6007 strandings, including four sea turtle species and anthropogenic interaction was observed in 12.88% (n = 774) of the strandings. Chelonia mydas represented 94.05% of the total records with anthropogenic interaction and fishing-related strandings accounted for 81.65%. Juvenile individuals were more affected than adults; likewise, females were more affected than males. Icapuí and Areia Branca are very populous municipalities, and showed large number of strandings with signs of anthropogenic interaction. Our analyses revealed that fishing-related strandings were reported throughout the year; however, a larger number of records occurred in the dry season and during the lobster-fishing season. Our study brings knowledge on sea turtle strandings in north-eastern Brazil, providing results that support public policies to mitigate anthropogenic impacts on sea turtles.

In this paper we report the trauma suffered by a green turtle (Chelonia mydas), caused by a collision with a motorboat, and describe the case ante and post-mortem. An adult female green turtle was rescued alive on December 2, 2016 at Ponta Negra beach, municipality of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. The rescued animal was sent to the Marine Fauna Rehabilitation Center (PCCB-UERN), municipality of Areia Branca (RN), in Brazil. Physical examination revealed an excellent body score, noisy breathing, moderate dehydration, absence of hind limb and cloacal reflexes when stimulated by pressure, and two traumatic injuries characteristic of a collision with a motorboat. After three days of supportive treatment, the animal died and was immediately sent for necropsy. The animal had a complete fracture of the vertebral bodies (dorsal elements D9 and D10) and spinal cord section. The entire gastrointestinal tract had food content, in addition to sharp injuries in the colon caused by the bone fragments of the fractured carapace. The lungs were congested, hemorrhagic with frothy and bloody secretion, and interstitial bronchiole fibrosis. There was also present some fibrin and a large number of leukocyte cells, consisting mainly of macrophages. The liver was enlarged, with rounded edges and thickening of the capsule, multifocal areas of hepatocellular necrosis, and dissociation of the hepatocyte cords. The collision resulted in the exposure of the coelomic cavity and spinal cord, causing the animal intense pain, paralysis of the hind limbs and cloaca, septicemia, and consequently, death.

A juvenile green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) of undetermined sex was rescued on October 16, 2019, in the archipelago of Fernando de Noronha, Pernambuco, Brazil. The animal was presence of active bleeding resulting from two transverse fractures in the carapace, with exposure of the coelomic cavity. Radiological and hematological tests were performed. The animal received therapeutic support and surgical reconstruction of the carapace. The animal was medically cleared and reintroduced into the natural environment 120 days after it was rescued. The protocol used here for both the rehabilitation and the surgical procedure was concluded to be effective.

As tartarugas-verdes (Chelonia mydas) são afetadas pela fibropapilomatose (FP), doença que pode ser uma ameaça para elas. O trabalho teve como objetivo descrever as características histopatológicas dos tumores sugestivos de FP e pesquisar a presença de DNA de Chelonid alphaherpesvirus 5 (ChHV5) em lesões cutâneas de 26 tartarugas verdes encalhadas na Bacia Potiguar (nordeste do Brasil). As tartarugas verdes foram encontradas durante o monitoramento diário, e os tumores de FP foram coletados por biópsia ou durante necropsia, quantificados e analisados de acordo com distribuição anatômica, tamanho e Escore de Fibropapilomatose do Atlântico Sudoeste (FPSSWA). Vinte e seis cortes histológicos foram examinados, e 26 amostras fixadas em formalina e embebidas em parafina foram analisadas por reação em cadeia da polimerase (PCR) para detectar o DNA do ChHV5. Um total de 292 tumores foi analisado (1-42 por indivíduo), sendo a maioria com tamanho de 1-4 cm (74%; 218/292 tumores) e presentes nos membros anteriores (48,6%; 142/292 tumores). De acordo com o FPSSWA, a maioria das tartarugas verdes estava afetada de forma leve (53,8%; 14/26). O exame histopatológico revelou características previamente descritas na literatura (projeções papilares da camada epitelial, hiperceratose, hiperplasia da camada basal, fibroblastos em proliferação bem diferenciados) classificando os tumores como papilomas ou fibropapilomas. Com relação aos resultados de PCR, 79,9% das amostras de tumor testadas foram positivas para ChHV5 e as sequências foram obtidas em todas as amostras amplificadas. Nossas sequências UL30 são idênticas a várias sequências descritas em tartarugas marinhas do Brasil, enquanto as sequências UL18 e UL27 são mais semelhantes as de tartarugas verdes na Flórida. Nosso estudo relata detecção e caracterização molecular do ChHV5 em tartarugas verdes encalhadas na Bacia Potiguar, importante área de alimentação com alta frequência de ocorrência de FP.

Objetivos: Analisar os indicadores epidemiológicos de crianças e adolescentes acometidos pela COVID-19 em crianças e adolescentes do estado de Roraima-RR e Descrever o perfil dos óbitos e a letalidade de síndrome respiratória aguda grave (SRAG) por COVID-19 em crianças e adolescentes no período de março de 2020 a junho de 2021. Métodos: Estudo transversal a partir de dados secundários epidemiológicos que tem como dados os óbitos por COVID-19 do estado de Roraima, utilizando indicadores como, número de óbitos, idade, sexo, raça, cor, coletados a partir de informações do boletim epidemiológico acesso realizado em 21/06/2021, óbitos ocorridos em Unidade de Terapia Intensiva. RESULTADOS: Realizou-se análise dos indicadores através dos dados disponíveis na FONTE: https://roraimacontraocorona.rr.gov.br/transparencia/ Gerenciador de Ambiente Laboratorial/GAL- LACEN/ RR E SUS notifica/ministério da saúde. Conclusão: O estudo demostrou que a faixa etária mais acometida letalmente pela COVID-19 foi a de 1 a 4 anos com taxa 46,2% de e que as crianças indígenas são mais vulneráveis à doença e consequentemente evoluíram para óbito com taxa de 51,3%.

Sea turtles face several threats and pollution has become a major concern for their conservation worldwide. We analyzed samples of the liver, muscles, and kidneys of 38 Chelonia mydas stranded along the Potiguar Basin, northeastern Brazil, between 2015 and 2018 to determine the total Hg concentration (THg), as well as the concentrations of Cu, Cd, Ag, and Se. The relation between turtle size and element concentrations revealed a negative correlation for THg and Se (liver, muscles, and kidneys), Cu and Cd (liver and kidneys) and a positive correlation for Ag in the three organs analyzed. A fibropapilomatose (FP) é uma doença multifatorial, neoplásica e infecciosa que afeta todas as espécies de tartarugas marinhas, e o Chelonid alphaherpesvirus 5(ChHV5) tem sido apontado como o agente etiológico primário. Essa doença é caracterizada por tumores cutâneos, mas fibromas viscerais, mixofibromas e fibrossarcomas também têm sido relatados e podem interferir nas funções sistêmicas. Apesar de descrições anteriores de neoplasias viscerais em tartarugas marinhas do Havaí e Flórida, algumas infectadas pelo ChHV5, há poucos relatos de tumores não cutâneos em tartarugas marinhas no Brasil. Para preencher essa lacuna, analisamos amostras de neoplasias internas de quatro tartarugas verdes (Chelonia mydas) através de técnicas histopatológicas e moleculares. Neoplasias cutâneas foram quantificadas e classificadas de acordo com seus tamanhos e escores para determinar a severidade da FP, e a presença de tumores internos foi confirmada postmortem durante necropsia. Quarenta e oito tumores cutâneos (7-23 por indivíduo) foram encontrados nas tartarugas verdes amostradas, e a severidade da FP foi classificada como leve (2 indivíduos) e moderada (2 indivíduos). Neoplasias viscerais foram encontradas em pulmão (n=4), coração (n=1), intestino (n=2), esôfago (n=1), estômago (n=1), fígado (n=1), baço (n=1), músculo esquelético (n=1) e rim (n=2), sendo classificadas como fibromas e uma como mixofibroma renal. Não detectamos DNA do ChHV5 nos fibromas esofágico, muscular esquelético e hepático. Nossa pesquisa relata nova descrição de mixofibroma renal e detecção do ChHV5 em neoplasias viscerais de tartarugas verdes no Brasil, melhorando o conhecimento sobre prevalência, localização anatômica e severidade dos tumores internos associados à FP.

This study monitored marine turtle nests in a region known as the Potiguar Basin, which stretches from the northern region of Rio Grande do Norte State (5°4’1.15” S, 36°4’36.41” W) to eastern Ceará State (4°38’48.28” S, 37°32’52.08” W) in Brazil. We collected data from January 2011 to December 2019 to identify species of sea turtles that spawn in the basin, to analyze the nesting spatial-temporal pattern and nests characteristics, and to record effects of environmental and anthropic factors on nests. A field team examined sea turtle tracks and nests signs. Turtle clutches were monitored daily until hatchings emerged from the nests. We monitored nests of hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata; n = 238) and olive Ridley turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea; n = 103). The nesting season for E. imbricata occurred between December and May and for L. olivacea from March to August. Hawksbills had clutch size, incubation time, number of unhatched eggs, and dead hatchlings higher than olive Ridley turtles; nevertheless, they presented lower hatching success. Precipitation between 0 and 22 mm and relative humidity (RH) higher than 69% increased the hatching success rate for E. imbricata; however, rainfall above 11 mm and RH 64% had the same effect for L. olivacea. Signs of egg theft and human presence (e.g. vehicle traffic and plastic residues on the beach) were recorded and are considered threats to nests. The results of our long-term monitoring study in the Potiguar Basin provide basis for the implementation of mitigation measures and adoption of management policies at nesting beaches in this Brazilian region.

Fish feeding habit associated to the morphology of their digestive tube can provide useful biological and ecological information. Between January and December 2012, we examined 16 fish species discarded by trawl in the Potiguar basin, northeastern Brazil, and classified them into four groups according to Alimentary Index - IAi. Our aims were to: (1) provide information on diet composition of one species represented by each group (Opisthonema oglinum, Conodon nobilis, Larimus breviceps and Sphoeroides testudineus), (2) examine the morphology of their digestive tube, and (3) associate ingested food items with the morphological features. Stomach contents were collected and classified according to IAi: main, accessory and secondary categories; fragments of esophagus, stomach, and small intestine were examined using paraffin section technique. Biometric data (total length-TL, standard length-SL and total weight-TW), stomach weight-SW, and gonadal weight-GW were recorded and applied in two indices: (1) the stomach Repletion Index - SRI (SRI = SW/TW × 100) and (2) the gonadosomatic index - GSI (GSI = GW/TW × 100) for the analyses of feeding and reproductive activities, respectively. The main food categories were (1) Teleostei for C. nobilis, (2) Crustacea for L. breviceps and O. oglinum, and (3) Mollusca for S. testudineus. The feeding activity was higher during the dry season, while the GSI was higher in the rainy season. The morphological analysis revealed a regular structure of the tissues analyzed. We highlight the presence of tubular gastric glands and strong muscular walls in the stomach (O. oglinum; L. breviceps); well-developed pyloric caecum in the intestine (O. oglinum; C. nobilis; L. breviceps); and presence of pseudo-stomach (S. testudineus). Our study confirms that the digestive tube of the examined species has morphological adequacy for carnivorous feeding habit, providing useful information on tissue structures associated to diet composition. Resumo: O hábito alimentar de peixes associado à morfologia do tubo digestivo pode fornecer informações biológicas e ecológicas úteis. Entre janeiro e dezembro de 2012, examinamos 16 espécies de peixes descartadas por pesca de arrasto na Bacia Potiguar, nordeste do Brasil, e as classificamos em quatro grupos, de acordo com o Índice Alimentar-IAi. Nossos objetivos foram: (1) fornecer informações sobre a composição da dieta de uma espécie representante de cada grupo (Opisthonema oglinum, Conodon nobilis, Larimus breviceps e Sphoeroides testudineus), (2) examinar a morfologia de seu tubo digestivo e (3) associar os itens alimentares ingeridos com as características morfológicas descritas. O conteúdo estomacal foi coletado e classificado de acordo com o IAi nas categorias: principal, acessória e secundária; fragmentos de esôfago, estômago e intestino delgado foram examinados pela técnica de secção em parafina. Os dados biométricos (comprimento total-CT, comprimento padrão-CP e peso total-PT), peso do estômago-PE e peso gonadal-PG foram registrados e aplicados em dois índices: (1) Índice de Repleção Estomacal - IR (IR = PE / PT × 100) e (2) Índice Gonadossomático - IGS (IGS = PG / PT × 100) para análises de atividade alimentar e reprodutiva, respectivamente. As principais categorias alimentares foram: (1) Teleostei para C. nobilis, (2) Crustacea para L. breviceps e O. oglinum, e (3) Mollusca para S. testudineus. Maior atividade alimentar ocorreu durante a estação seca, e o IGS foi maior na estação chuvosa. O exame morfológico revelou estrutura regular dos tecidos analisados, destacando-se a presença de glândulas gástricas tubulares e camadas musculares espessas no estômago (O. oglinum; L. breviceps); cecos pilóricos bem desenvolvidos no intestino (O. oglinum; C. nobilis; L. breviceps); e presença de pseudoestômago (S. testudineus). Nosso estudo confirma que o tubo digestivo das espécies examinadas possui adequação morfológica ao hábito alimentar carnívoro e fornece informações úteis sobre as estruturas dos tecidos associados à composição da dieta.

Este estudo analisou a biologia reprodutiva de Prochilodus brevis mantida em cativeiro durante o desenvolvimento ontogenetico, a fim de contribuir com a conservacao e o aprimoramento da reproducao induzida dessa especie, a qual destaca-se por ter valor comercial atribuido ao consumo de sua “ova” e por ser endemica da regiao Nordeste. A amostragem foi quinzenal, sendo analisados 137 exemplares. Observacoes macroscopicas e microscopicas das gonadas permitiu a identificacao de quatro estagios de maturacao gonadal: Imaturo, Em Maturacao, Maduro e Regressao. A idade de maturacao foi prevista com grau satisfatorio de confianca, pois o desenvolvimento gonadal foi observado de alevinos ate peixes na idade adulta. A eclosao dos alevinos foi acompanhada na Estacao de Pesca Estevao de Oliveira, em Caico/RN/Brasil. Posteriormente, os alevinos foram transferidos para um tanque na Escola Agricola de Jundiai, em Macaiba/RN/Brasil. Foram verificados machos e femeas juvenis ate 225 dias apos a eclosao (dae), em inicio de maturacao com 247 dae, individuos com gonadas maduras a partir de 274 dae e em regressao a partir de 359 dae para femeas e 410 dae para machos, sendo corroborado pela curva de maturacao com base nos valores do Indice Gonadossomatico. Assim, observou-se que, mesmo em cativeiro, P. brevis atinge todos os estagios de maturacao gonadal, com excecao da desova, devido ausencia de condicoes ambientais adequadas, visto ser uma especie reofilica. Portanto, constatou-se que a maturacao gonadal de P. brevis ocorre entre 247 e 340 dae, correspondente ao periodo de outubro a janeiro, semelhante ao ambiente natural. This work presents a methodology for the design of Seevinck's CMOS log-domain integrators. Since companding circuits in general and log-domain circuits in particular impose many restrictions concerning the correct operating point of transistors and the perfect cancellation of nonlinearities, their dimensioning is not simple. In order not to such a difficulty become a drawback against the achievable low power consumption and high signal-to-noise(distortion) ratio, if compared to conventional small-signal circuits, a careful design methodology is required.
