Prolactinomas are the most common hypophyseal adenomas. They are benign, functionally active anterior pituitary tumors which secrete the peptide hormone prolactin. By doing so they cause a hyperprolactinemic state in the body which in turn causes the majority of patient simptoms. Patients with an increased serum prolactin concentration experience sexual and reproductive disturbances and face the problem of infertility. Prolactinomas and their subsequent symptoms can be treated both medically and surgically. The aim of this study was to compare the long-term outcomes of both treatment methods that had been applied in the LUHS hospital in Kaunas, Lithuania. A retrospective analysis was performed on the two treatment groups. Dynamic changes in prolactin concentration, hiperprolactinemia control and remission rates were compared in the medical and surgical treatment groups. Relations between patient sex, adenoma size, treatment method, effectiveness and other factors were also investigated.
