In this survey study of 7,208 Dutch healthcare workers, we investigate whether healthcare workers dealing with COVID-19 patients experience lower general health, more physical and mental exhaustion and more sleep problems than other healthcare workers. Additionally, we study whether there are differences in well-being within the group of healthcare workers working with COVID-19 patients, based on personal and work characteristics. We find healthcare workers who are in direct contact with COVID- 19 patients report more sleep problems and are more physically exhausted than those who are not in direct contact with COVID-19 patients. Mental exhaustion and general health do not significantly differ between healthcare workers who are in direct contact with COVID-19 patients and those who are not. Among healthcare workers in direct contact with COVID-19 patients, lower well-being on one or more indicators is reported by those who are female, living alone, without leadership role, or without sufficient protective equipment. Regarding age, physical exhaustion is more prevalent under healthcare workers older than 55 years, whereas mental exhaustion is more prevalent under healthcare workers younger than 36 years. These results stress the need of mental and physical support of healthcare workers during a pandemic, catered to the needs of healthcare workers themselves.

AS the result of an epidemiologic investigation of an outbreak of salmonellosis in a mental hospital in Massachusetts, an unusual opportunity has presented itself to demonstrate a hidden clue to the spread of the infection and to follow it back to the source, a dietary supplement of avian origin, with exceptionally thorough laboratory confirmation. The serology of the Mycoplasma (PPLO) of avian origin gained significance after 1952, when the reports of Markham and Wong (14) and Van Roekel and Olesiuk (16) implicated the PPLO as the cause of chronic respiratory disease (CRD) of chickens, and of infectious sinusitis (IS) of turkeys. Serological techniques were soon developed; the tools used are hemagglutination inhibition (11), agglutination (1), and growth inhibition (2,6). Earlier reports (9,10,17) indicated that the Mycoplasma isolated from CRD and IS were antigenically and morphologically the same, and for a time it appeared that only one strain of avian origin existed (3). More recent reports by Yamamoto and Adler (18), Kleckner (13), Chalquest and Fabricant (5), Fabricant (8), and Yoder and Hofstad (19) showed that the Mycoplasma of avian sources are a heterogeneous group, and ten serotypes were described by those workers. Generic names were assigned to three of these groups by Edward and Kanarek (7). It has long been established that Salmonella pullorum and S. gallinarum may localize in the ovary of both chickens and turkeys, producing transovarian infection.
