We develop the first model for extreme mass-ratio inspirals (EMRIs) with misaligned angular momentum and primary spin, and zero eccentricity -- also known as quasi-spherical inspirals -- evolving under the influence of the first-order in mass ratio gravitational self-force. The forcing terms are provided by an efficient spectral interpolation of the first-order gravitational self-force in the outgoing radiation gauge. In order to speed up the calculation of the inspiral we apply a near-identity (averaging) transformation to eliminate all dependence of the orbital phases from the equations of motion while maintaining all secular effects of the first-order gravitational self-force at post-adiabatic order. The resulting solutions are defined with respect to `Mino time' so we perform a second averaging transformation so the inspiral is parametrized in terms of Boyer-Lindquist time, which is more convenient of LISA data analysis. We also perform a similar analysis using the two-timescale expansion and find that using either approach yields self-forced inspirals that can be evolved to sub-radian accuracy in less than a second. The dominant contribution to the inspiral phase comes from the adiabatic contributions and so we further refine our self-force model using information from gravitational wave flux calculations. The two-body problem is extensively studied in open systems and asymptotically flat spacetimes. However, there are many systems where radiation is trapped: they range from radiating charges in cavities to low-energy excitations of massive degrees of freedom, to anti-de Sitter spacetimes. Here, we study the problem of motion of a pointlike particle orbiting a massive compact object inside a cavity. We first show that - assuming circular motion - there are initial conditions for which the self-force vanishes and the binary is eternal. We then consider the evolution of the system under radiation reaction in a toy model which we argue captures the essentials of orbiting particles. We show that eternal circular binaries may exist. We also show that the presence of cavity modes leads to chaos in regimes of strong coupling or when the system is initialized close enough to a resonance. Our results have implications for physics in anti-de Sitter spacetimes and possibly for binaries evolving within dark matter haloes, if it consists on massive fundamental fields., 21 pages, 17 figures

We present SEOBNRv5HM, a more accurate and faster inspiral-merger-ringdown gravitational waveform model for quasi-circular, spinning, nonprecessing binary black holes within the effective-one-body (EOB) formalism. Compared to its predecessor, SEOBNRv4HM, the waveform model i) incorporates recent high-order post- Newtonian results in the inspiral, with improved resummations, ii) includes the gravitational modes (l, |m|) = (3, 2), (4, 3), in addition to the (2, 2), (3, 3), (2, 1), (4, 4), (5, 5) modes already implemented in SEOBNRv4HM, iii) is calibrated to larger mass-ratios and spins using a catalog of 442 numerical-relativity (NR) simulations and 13 additional waveforms from black-hole perturbation theory, iv) incorporates information from second-order gravitational self-force (2GSF) in the nonspinning modes and radiation-reaction force. Computing the unfaithfulness against NR simulations, we find that for the dominant (2, 2) mode the maximum unfaithfulness in the total mass range $10-300 M_{\odot}$ is below $10^{-3}$ for 90% of the cases (38% for SEOBNRv4HM). When including all modes up to l = 5 we find 98% (49%) of the cases with unfaithfulness below $10^{-2} (10^{-3})$, while these numbers reduce to 88% (5%) when using SEOBNRv4HM. Furthermore, the model shows improved agreement with NR in other dynamical quantities (e.g., the angular momentum flux and binding energy), providing a powerful check of its physical robustness. We implemented the waveform model in a high-performance Python package (pySEOBNR), which leads to evaluation times faster than SEOBNRv4HM by a factor 10 to 50, depending on the configuration, and provides the flexibility to easily include spin-precession and eccentric effects, thus making it the starting point for a new generation of EOBNR waveform models (SEOBNRv5) to be employed for upcoming observing runs of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA detectors.

We present closed-form solutions for plunging geodesics in the extended Kerr spacetime using Boyer-Lindquist coordinates. Our solutions directly solve for the dynamics of generic timelike plunges, we also specialise to the case of test particles plunging from a precessing innermost stable circular orbit (ISSO). We find these solutions in the form of elementary and Jacobi elliptic functions parameterized by Mino time. In particular, we demonstrate that solutions for the ISSO case can be determined almost entirely in terms of elementary functions, depending only on the spin parameter of the black hole and the radius of the ISSO. This extends recent work on the case of equatorial plunges from the innermost stable circular orbit. Furthermore, we introduce a new equation that characterizes the radial inflow from the ISSO to the horizon, taking into account the inclination. We leverage recent breakthrough calculations using second-order gravitational self-force (2GSF) theory to improve both the gravitational-mode amplitudes and radiation-reaction force in effective-one-body~(EOB) waveform models. We achieve this by introducing new calibration parameters in the SEOBNRv5HM mode amplitudes, and matching them to the newly available 2GSF energy-flux multipolar data for quasicircular nonspinning binary black holes. We find that this significantly improves the SEOBNRv5HM energy flux, when compared to numerical-relativity (NR) simulations of binary black holes with mass ratios between 1:1 and 1:20. Moreover, we find that, once the conservative part of the SEOBNRv5 dynamics is calibrated, the SEOBNRv5HM waveform model with 2GSF information reproduces the binding energy of NR simulations more accurately, providing a powerful check of the consistency and naturalness of the EOB approach. While we only include nonspinning 2GSF information, the more accurate binding energy and energy flux carry over to the SEOBNRv5 waveform models for spinning binary black holes. Thus, our results improve the latest generation of SEOBNR waveform models (i.e., SEOBNRv5), which has been recently completed for use in the upcoming fourth observing (O4) run of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA Collaboration.

Eccentric compact binary mergers are significant scientific targets for current and future gravitational wave observatories. To detect and analyze eccentric signals, there is an increasing effort to develop waveform models, numerical relativity simulations, and parameter estimation frameworks for eccentric binaries. Unfortunately, current models and simulations adopt different internal parameterisations of eccentricity in the absence of a unique natural definition of eccentricity in general relativity, which can result in incompatible eccentricity measurements. In this paper, we present a standard definition of eccentricity and mean anomaly based solely on waveform quantities. This definition is free of gauge ambiguities, has the correct Newtonian limit, and can be applied as a postprocessing step when comparing eccentricity measurements from different models. This standardization puts all models and simulations on the same footing and enables direct comparisons between eccentricity estimates from gravitational wave observations and astrophysical predictions. We demonstrate the applicability of our definition for waveforms of different origins, including post-Newtonian theory, effective one body, extreme mass ratio inspirals, and numerical relativity simulations. We focus on binaries without spin-precession in this work, but possible generalizations to spin-precessing binaries are discussed. Black holes are unique among astrophysical sources: they are the simplest macroscopic objects in the Universe, and they are extraordinary in terms of their ability to convert energy into electromagnetic and gravitational radiation. Our capacity to probe their nature is limited by the sensitivity of our detectors. The LIGO/Virgo interferometers are the gravitational-wave equivalent of Galileo’s telescope. The first few detections represent the beginning of a long journey of exploration. At the current pace of technological progress, it is reasonable to expect that the gravitational-wave detectors available in the 2035-2050s will be formidable tools to explore these fascinating objects in the cosmos, and space-based detectors with peak sensitivities in the mHz band represent one class of such tools. These detectors have a staggering discovery potential, and they will address fundamental open questions in physics and astronomy. Are astrophysical black holes adequately described by general relativity? Do we have empirical evidence for event horizons? Can black holes provide a glimpse into quantum gravity, or reveal a classical breakdown of Einstein’s gravity? How and when did black holes form, and how do they grow? Are there new long-range interactions or fields in our Universe, potentially related to dark matter and dark energy or a more fundamental description of gravitation? Precision tests of black hole spacetimes with mHz-band gravitational-wave detectors will probe general relativity and fundamental physics in previously inaccessible regimes, and allow us to address some of these fundamental issues in our current understanding of nature.

Extreme mass-ratio inspirals (EMRIs) detectable by the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna are unique probes of the nature of supermassive compact objects. We compute the gravitational-wave signal emitted by a stellar-mass compact object in a circular equatorial orbit around a Kerr-like horizonless supermassive object defined by an effective radius and a reflectivity coefficient. The Teukolsky equations are solved consistently with suitable (frequency-dependent) boundary conditions, and the modified energy and angular-momentum fluxes are used to evolve the orbital parameters adiabatically. The gravitational fluxes have resonances corresponding to the low-frequency quasinormal modes of the central object, which can contribute significantly to the gravitational-wave phase. Overall, the absence of a classical event horizon in the central object can affect the gravitational-wave signal dramatically, with deviations even larger than those previously estimated by a model-independent analysis of the tidal heating. We estimate that EMRIs could potentially place the most stringent constraint on the reflectivity of supermassive compact objects at the remarkable level of ${\cal O}(10^{-6})\%$ and would allow to constrain various models which are not ruled out by the ergoregion instability. In particular, an EMRI detection could allow one to rule out (or provide evidence for) signatures of quantum black-hole horizons with Boltzmann reflectivity. The grand challenges of contemporary fundamental physics-dark matter, dark energy, vacuum energy, inflation and early universe cosmology, singularities and the hierarchy problem-all involve gravity as a key component. And of all gravitational phenomena, black holes stand out in their elegant simplicity, while harbouring some of the most remarkable predictions of General Relativity: event horizons, singularities and ergoregions. The hitherto invisible landscape of the gravitational Universe is being unveiled before our eyes: the historical direct detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration marks the dawn of a new era of scientific exploration. Gravitational-wave astronomy will allow us to test models of black hole formation, growth and evolution, as well as models of gravitational-wave generation and propagation. It will provide evidence for event horizons and ergoregions, test the theory of General Relativity itself, and may reveal the existence of new fundamental fields. The synthesis of these results has the potential to radically reshape our understanding of the cosmos and of the laws of Nature. The purpose of this work is to present a concise, yet comprehensive overview of the state of the art in the relevant fields of research, summarize important open problems, and lay out a roadmap for future progress. This write-up is an initiative taken within the framework of the European Action on 'Black holes, Gravitational waves and Fundamental Physics'.

The effective-one-body theory (EOB) describes the conservative dynamics of compact binary systems in terms of an effective Hamiltonian approach. The Hamiltonian for moderately eccentric motion of two non-spinning compact objects in the extreme mass-ratio limit is given in terms of three potentials: $a(v), \bar{d}(v), q(v)$. By generalizing the first law of mechanics for (non-spinning) black hole binaries to eccentric orbits, [\prd{\bf92}, 084021 (2015)] recently obtained new expressions for $\bar{d}(v)$ and $q(v)$ in terms of quantities that can be readily computed using the gravitational self-force approach. Using these expressions we present a new computation of the EOB potential $q(v)$ by combining results from two independent numerical self-force codes. We determine $q(v)$ for inverse binary separations in the range $1/1200 \le v \lesssim 1/6$. Our computation thus provides the first-ever strong-field results for $q(v)$. We also obtain $\bar{d}(v)$ in our entire domain to a fractional accuracy of $\gtrsim 10^{-8}$. We find to our results are compatible with the known post-Newtonian expansions for $\bar{d}(v)$ and $q(v)$ in the weak field, and agree with previous (less accurate) numerical results for $\bar{d}(v)$ in the strong field., 4 figures, numerical data at the end. We study the geometry generated by a massless cosmic string. We find that this is given by a Riemann flat spacetime with a conical singularity along the worldsheet of the string. The geometry of such a spacetime is completely fixed by the holonomy of a simple loop wrapping the conical singularity. In the case of a massless cosmic string, this holonomy is a null-rotation/parabolic Lorentz transformation with a parabolic angle given by the linear energy density of the cosmic string. This description explicitly shows that there is no gravitational shockwave accompanying the massless cosmic string as has been suggested in the past. To illustrate the non-singular nature of the surrounding geometry, we construct a metric for the massless cosmic string that is smooth everywhere outside the conical singularity., Comment: (13 pages, 4 figures)

We study a model for gravity in 3+1 dimensions, inspired in general relativity in 2+1 dimensions. In contrast regular general relativity in 3+1 dimensions, the model postulates that space in absence of matter is flat. The requirement that the Einstein equation still holds for the complete spacetime, implies that matter may only appear as conical defects of co-dimension 2, which may be interpreted as straight cosmic strings moving at a constant velocity. The study of collisions of these defects reveals that the dynamics of the model is incomplete. Certain highly energetic collisions of almost parallel defects suggest that no dynamic completion may exist that is fully compatible with the principles on which the model was based. We also study the phase space of the model in the continuum limit. We find that even though does not contain gravitational waves at the fundamental level, they do appear as an emergent feature in the continuum limit., Comment: PhD thesis, Utrecht University
