The ability to synchronise with other people is a core socio-motor competence acquired during human development. In this study we aimed to understand the impact of individual emotional arousal on joint action performance. We asked 15 mixed-gender groups (of 4 individuals each) to participate in a digital, four-way movement synchronisation task. Participants shared the same physical space, but could not see each other during the task. In each trial run, every participant was induced with an emotion-laden acoustic stimulus (pre-selected from the second version of International Affective Digitized Sounds). Our data demonstrated that the human ability to synchronise is overall robust to fluctuations in individual emotional arousal, but performance varies in quality and movement speed as a result of valence of emotional induction (both on the individual and group level). We found that three negative inductions per group per trial led to a drop in overall group synchronisation performance (measured as the median and standard deviation of Kuramoto’s order parameter—an index measuring the strength of synchrony between oscillators, in this study, players) in the 15 sec post-induction. We report that negatively-valenced inductions led to slower oscillations, whilst positive induction afforded faster oscillations. On the individual level of synchronisation performance we found an effect of empathetic disposition (higher competence linked to better performance during the negative induction condition) and of participant’s sex (males displayed better synchronisation performance with others). We believe this work is a blueprint for exploring the frontiers of inextricably bound worlds of emotion and joint action, be it physical or digital.

El propósito de esta aventura científica, se ha centrado en diseñar una tarea psicofísica que implique una atención continua y que permita una interpretación única de los posibles resultados tanto psicofísicos como electrofisiológicos, así como en la obtención de registros de la actividad de neuronas de la corteza visual primaria durante la ejecución de la tarea, lo que nos permitiría, mediante el empleo de los análisis adecuados, ver si la actividad de poblaciones de neuronas de la corteza visual se correlaciona para dar paso al estímulo presentado e inicializar así a las asociaciones neuronales que lo procesarán o si, por el contrario, la transmisión y procesamiento de información visual en el cortex estriado no implica un agrupamiento perceptual y por lo tanto una presencia de actividad neuronal correlacionada que identifica al estímulo para su identificación y extracción de su entorno.

Neocortical computations underlying vision are performed by a distributed network of functionally specialized areas. Mouse visual cortex, a dense interareal network that exhibits hierarchical properties, comprises subnetworks interconnecting distinct processing streams. To determine the layout of the mouse visual hierarchy, we have evaluated the laminar patterns formed by interareal axonal projections originating in each of ten areas. Reciprocally connected pairs of areas exhibit feedforward/feedback relationships consistent with a hierarchical organization. Beta regression analyses, which estimate a continuous hierarchical distance measure, indicate that the network comprises multiple nonhierarchical circuits embedded in a hierarchical organization of overlapping levels. Single-unit recordings in anaesthetized mice show that receptive field sizes are generally consistent with the hierarchy, with the ventral stream exhibiting a stricter hierarchy than the dorsal stream. Together, the results provide an anatomical metric for hierarchical distance, and reveal both hierarchical and nonhierarchical motifs in mouse visual cortex., Mouse visual cortex is a dense, interconnected network of distinct areas. D’Souza et al. identify an anatomical index to quantify the hierarchical nature of pathways, and highlight the hierarchical and nonhierarchical features of the network.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of the human brain provides images of changes in local blood flow and oxygenation that are evoked by sensory, motor, or cognitive events. Functional MRI has been used since 1991 [1] to identify areas of the brain that respond to visual stimulation and the performance of vision-related tasks. Increasingly, fMRI is accompanied by diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), which provides images of the speed and direction of diffusion of water molecules in the brain. Fortuitously, this allows remarkable differentiation of cerebral white mater and the delineation of a variety of major white matter tracts including vision-related pathways such as the optic radiations. This chapter focuses primarily on fMRI, but DTI data are also discussed where relevant. Together, the two methods provide a wealth of information about the anatomical and functional status of key components of the visual system in individual patients even in the presence of pathology. For example, an imaging-based map of the visual system can be helpful for planning and guiding surgical resection of tumors impacting critical vision-related brain structures. This is especially true when mass effects or previous surgeries have distorted the normal anatomy making it difficult to know where key structures are located and if they are still functional. In difficult cases, identifying the region of “closest approach” of a planned resection to the cortical representation of central vision or to the optic radiations can help to minimize the risk to eloquent neural tissue and thereby avoid significant treatment-induced vision loss while still permitting maximum therapeutic effect.

Problemstellung: Die vorliegende Bachelorarbeit beschäftigt sich mit kurz- und langfristigen Auswirkungen von Alkoholkonsum auf das visuelle und okulomotorische System aus orthoptischer Sicht. Es wird eine Übersicht über alkohol-induzierte Beeinträchtigungen verschiedener Bereiche des visuellen und okulomotorischen Systems dargeboten, darunter die Sehschärfe, das Binokularsehen, die zentrale Okulomotorik, die Kontrastwahrnehmung sowie das Gesichtsfeld. Methode: Als methodische Vorgehensweise zur Beantwortung der Forschungsfrage wird eine systematische Literaturrecherche durchgeführt. Im Zuge dieser wird in diversen Datenbanken und Bibliotheken nach Fachbüchern, Fachzeitschriften und Studien zum Thema Alkoholkonsum im Zusammenhang mit visuellen und okulomotorischen Symptomen und Störungen recherchiert. Ergebnisse: Hinsichtlich der Sehschärfe wird eine durch Alkoholkonsum ausgelöste Herabsetzung der retinalen Abbildungsqualität sowie eine Beeinträchtigung des visuellen Unterscheidungsvermögens beschrieben. Zusätzlich kann Alkoholkonsum das Risiko diverser Augenerkrankungen, durch welche die Sehschärfe reduziert wird, fördern. Die Minderung der Qualität des Binokularsehens zeigt sich in Form einer Reduktion des Stereosehens und der horizontalen Fusionsbreite. Zudem kommt es durch Alkoholeinfluss zu Winkelveränderungen bei horizontalen Heterophorien. Alkohol-induzierte Störungen der zentralen Okulomotorik äußern sich als Auftreten eines allseitigen Blickrichtungsnystagmus, als Sakkadierung der langsamen Folgebewegungen sowie als Beeinträchtigung der Fixationssuppression des vestibulo-okulären Reflexes. Es kann zu einem positionellen Alkoholnystagmus kommen. Übermäßiger Alkoholkonsum erhöht das Risiko, an einer Wernicke-Enzephalopathie zu erkranken, die mit Störungen der zentralen Okulomotorik einhergeht. Durch Alkoholkonsum ausgelöste Einschränkungen der Kontrastwahrnehmung zeigen sich als Minderung der Kontrastsensitivität für verschiedene Ortsfrequenzen. Das Gesichtsfeld kann nach Alkoholkonsum konzentrische Einschränkungen aufweisen. Diskussion: Es gelten Limitationen der vorliegenden Bachelorarbeit sowie der verwendeten Literatur zu berücksichtigen. In Studien werden gegensätzliche Auswirkungen von Alkohol auf unterschiedliche Augenerkrankungen, welche die Sehschärfe mindern können, beschrieben. Einige Autor*innen legen alkohol-induzierte Störungen der zentralen Okulomotorik dar, ohne konkrete Aussagen über die dazu führende Trinkmenge oder Trinkfrequenz zu tätigen. Allgemein muss berücksichtigt werden, dass einige Aspekte des visuellen und okulomotorischen Systems bislang noch nicht ganzheitlich erforscht sind. Objective: This bachelor thesis deals with short- and long-term effects of alcohol consumption on the visual and oculomotor system from an orthoptic point of view. A review of alcohol-induced impairments of different areas of the visual and oculomotor system is presented, including visual acuity, binocular vision, central oculomotor function, contrast perception, and visual field. Methods: As a methodological approach to answer the research question, a systematic literature review is conducted. In the course of this, various databases and libraries are used to find reference books, journals and studies on the topic of alcohol consumption in connection with visual and oculomotor symptoms and disorders. Results: Regarding the visual acuity, a reduction in retinal image quality triggered by alcohol consumption and an impairment of visual discrimination are described. In addition, alcohol consumption may promote the risk of various ocular diseases by which visual acuity is reduced. The reduction in the quality of binocular vision is manifested in the form of a reduction in stereo vision and horizontal fusion width. In addition, alcohol influence causes angular changes in horizontal heterophoria. Alcohol-induced disturbances of central oculomotor function manifest as the occurrence of an all-sided gaze direction nystagmus, saccadic slow following movements, and impaired fixation suppression of the vestibulo-ocular reflex. Positional alcohol nystagmus may occur. Excessive alcohol consumption increases the risk of developing Wernicke's encephalopathy, which is associated with central oculomotor dysfunction. Impairments in contrast perception triggered by alcohol consumption manifest as a reduction in contrast sensitivity to different spatial frequencies. The visual field may show concentric limitations after alcohol consumption. Discussion: Limitations of the bachelor thesis as well as of the used literature must be considered. Studies describe opposite effects of alcohol on different eye diseases, which can reduce visual acuity. Some authors describe alcohol-induced disturbances of central oculomotor function without making concrete statements about the amount or frequency of drinking leading to these disturbances. In general, it must be considered that some aspects of the visual and oculomotor system have not yet been researched holistically.

In this work, algorithms have been developed to: 1. Compare visual field coordinate data, presented in different representation systems; 2. Determine the distance in degrees between any two points in the visual field; 3. Predict new coordinates of a given point in the visual field after the rotation of the head, around axes that pass through the nodal point of the eye. Formulas are proposed for the transformation of Polar coordinates into Zenithal Equatorial coordinates and vice versa; of Polar coordinates into Gnomic Equatorial of double meridians and vice versa; and projections of double meridians system into Zenithal Equatorial and vice versa. Using the transformation of polar coordinates into Cartesian coordinates, we can also propose algorithms for rotating the head or the visual field representation system around the dorsoventral, lateral-lateral and anterior-posterior axes, in the mediolateral, dorsoventral and clockwise directions, respectively. In addition, using the concept of the scalar product in linear algebra, we propose new algorithms for calculating the distance between two points and to determine the area of receptive fields in the visual field.

Vision is initiated by the rhodopsin family of light-sensitive G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). A photon is absorbed by the 11-cis retinal chromophore of rhodopsin, which isomerizes within 200 femtoseconds to the all-trans conformation, thereby initiating the cellular signal transduction processes that ultimately lead to vision. However, the intramolecular mechanism by which the photoactivated retinal induces the activation events inside rhodopsin remains experimentally unclear. Here we use ultrafast time-resolved crystallography at room temperature to determine how an isomerized twisted all-trans retinal stores the photon energy that is required to initiate the protein conformational changes associated with the formation of the G protein-binding signalling state. The distorted retinal at a 1-ps time delay after photoactivation has pulled away from half of its numerous interactions with its binding pocket, and the excess of the photon energy is released through an anisotropic protein breathing motion in the direction of the extracellular space. Notably, the very early structural motions in the protein side chains of rhodopsin appear in regions that are involved in later stages of the conserved class A GPCR activation mechanism. In recent decades, numerous structural brain imaging studies investigated purported morphometric changes in early (EB) and late onset blindness (LB). The results of these studies have not yielded very consistent results, neither with respect to the type, nor to the anatomical locations of the brain morphometric alterations. To better characterize the effects of blindness on brain morphometry, we performed a systematic review and an Anatomical-Likelihood-Estimation (ALE) coordinate-based-meta-analysis of 65 eligible studies on brain structural changes in EB and LB, including 890 EB, 466 LB and 1257 sighted controls. Results revealed atrophic changes throughout the whole extent of the retino-geniculo-striate system in both EB and LB, whereas changes in areas beyond the occipital lobe occurred in EB only. We discuss the nature of some of the contradictory findings with respect to the used brain imaging methodologies and characteristics of the blind populations such as the onset, duration and cause of blindness. Future studies should aim for much larger sample sizes, eventually by merging data from different brain imaging centers using the same imaging sequences, opt for multimodal structural brain imaging, and go beyond a purely structural approach by combining functional with structural connectivity network analyses. Purpose: Individuals with cortical visual impairment (CVI) can have difficulties with visual processing due to physical damage or atypical structures of visual pathways or visual processing centers in the brain. Many individuals with CVI have concomitant disabilities, including significant communication support needs; these individuals can benefit from augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Because much AAC involves a visual channel, implementation of AAC must consider the unique visual processing skills and challenges in CVI. However, little is known empirically about how to best design AAC for individuals with CVI. This study examined processing of visual stimuli in four young adolescents with CVI. Method: This study used a within-subjects experimental design that sought to provide an in-depth description of the visual engagement of individuals with CVI when viewing stimuli of various levels of complexity, either with or without a social cue. Results: Participants engaged most with the simplest stimuli (relative to the size of those stimuli) and engaged more when a social cue was provided during the task. The level of engagement with more complex stimuli was related to participants' score on the CVI Range, a clinical assessment tool that characterizes level of visual functioning. Conclusions: Implications for AAC include considerations for the internal complexity of AAC symbols and the complexity of the arrays created for individuals with CVI. Clinicians working with children with CVI who use AAC should consider the unique features of their visual processing.

Learned associations between stimuli in different sensory modalities can shape the way we perceive these stimuli. However, it is not well understood how these interactions are mediated or at what level of the processing hierarchy they occur. Here we describe a neural mechanism by which an auditory input can shape visual representations of behaviorally relevant stimuli through direct interactions between auditory and visual cortices in mice. We show that the association of an auditory stimulus with a visual stimulus in a behaviorally relevant context leads to experience-dependent suppression of visual responses in primary visual cortex (V1). Auditory cortex axons carry a mixture of auditory and retinotopically matched visual input to V1, and optogenetic stimulation of these axons selectively suppresses V1 neurons that are responsive to the associated visual stimulus after, but not before, learning. Our results suggest that cross-modal associations can be communicated by long-range cortical connections and that, with learning, these cross-modal connections function to suppress responses to predictable input., What you hear influences what you see. The authors show that experience with an audio-visual stimulus reshapes the input from auditory cortex to visual cortex, suppressing predictable visual input to amplify the unpredictable.

The classical complement cascade mediates synapse elimination in the visual thalamus during early brain development. However, whether the primary visual cortex also undergoes complement-mediated synapse elimination during early visual system development remains unknown. Here, we examined microglia-mediated synapse elimination in the visual thalamus and the primary visual cortex of early postnatal C1q and SRPX2 knockout mice. In the lateral geniculate nucleus, deletion of C1q caused a persistent decrease in synapse elimination and microglial synapse engulfment, while deletion of SRPX2 caused a transient increase in the same readouts. In the C1q-SRPX2 double knockout mice, the C1q knockout phenotypes were dominant over the SRPX2 knockout phenotypes, a result which is consistent with SRPX2 being an inhibitor of C1q. We found that genetic deletion of either C1q or SRPX2 did not affect synapse elimination or microglial engulfment of synapses in layer 4 of the primary visual cortex in early brain development. Together, these results show that the classical complement pathway regulates microglia-mediated synapse elimination in the visual thalamus but not the visual cortex during early development of the central nervous system.

Recent developments in performance and practicality of optically-pumped magnetometers (OPMs) have enabled new capabilities in non-invasive brain function mapping through magnetoencephalography. In particular, the lack of cryogenic operating conditions allows for more flexible placement of sensor heads closer to the brain, leading to improved spatial resolution and source localisation capabilities. Through recording visually evoked brain fields (VEFs), we demonstrate that the closer sensor proximity can be exploited to improve temporal resolution. We use OPMs, and superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) for reference, to measure brain responses to flash and pattern reversal stimuli. We find highly reproducible signals with consistency across multiple participants, stimulus paradigms and sensor modalities. The temporal resolution advantage of OPMs is manifest in a twofold improvement, compared to SQUIDs. The capability for improved spatio-temporal signal tracing is illustrated by simultaneous vector recordings of VEFs in the primary and associative visual cortex, where a time lag on the order of 10–20 ms is consistently found. This paves the way for further spatio-temporal studies of neurophysiological signal tracking in visual stimulus processing, and other brain responses, with potentially far-reaching consequences for time-critical mapping of functionality in healthy and pathological brains.

Studying neuronal activity at synapses requires high spatiotemporal resolution. For high spatial resolution in vivo imaging at depth, adaptive optics (AO) is required to correct sample-induced aberrations. To improve temporal resolution, Bessel focus has been combined with two-photon fluorescence microscopy (2PFM) for fast volumetric imaging at subcellular lateral resolution. To achieve both high-spatial and high-temporal resolution at depth, we develop an efficient AO method that corrects the distorted wavefront of Bessel focus at the objective focal plane and recovers diffraction-limited imaging performance. Applying AO Bessel focus scanning 2PFM to volumetric imaging of zebrafish larval and mouse brains down to 500 µm depth, we demonstrate substantial improvements in the sensitivity and resolution of structural and functional measurements of synapses in vivo. This enables volumetric measurements of synaptic calcium and glutamate activity at high accuracy, including the simultaneous recording of glutamate activity of apical and basal dendritic spines in the mouse cortex., Adaptive optics (AO) corrects sample aberrations and allows high spatial resolution at depth in vivo. Here the authors report an AO method for Bessel focus; they apply AO Bessel focus scanning fluorescence microscopy to volumetric imaging and measure synaptic calcium and glutamate activity in vivo.

Dynamic visual acuity test (DVAT) plays a key role in the assessment of vestibular function, the visual function of athletes, as well as various ocular diseases. As the visual pathways conducting dynamic and static signals are different, DVATs may have potential advantages over the traditional visual acuity tests commonly used, such as static visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, and static perimetry. Here, we provide a review of commonly applied DVATs and their several uses in clinical ophthalmology. These data indicate that the DVAT has its unique clinical significance in the evaluation of several ocular disorders.

Visual pathways of the brain are organized into parallel channels that code different features of the external environment. In the current study, we investigated the anatomical organization of parallel pathways from the superior colliculus (SC) to the pulvinar nucleus in the mouse. Virus injections placed in the ipsilateral and contralateral SC to induce the expression of different fluorescent proteins defines two pulvinar zones. The lateral pulvinar (Pl) receives ipsilateral SC input and the caudal medial pulvinar (Pcm) receives bilateral SC input. To examine the ultrastructure of these projections using transmission electron microscopy, we injected the SC with viruses to induce peroxidase expression within synaptic vesicles or mitochondria. We quantitatively compared the sizes of ipsilateral and contralateral tectopulvinar terminals and their postsynaptic dendrites, as well as the sizes of the overall population of synaptic terminals and their postsynaptic dendrites in the Pl and Pcm. Our ultrastructural analysis revealed that ipsilateral tectopulvinar terminals are significantly larger than contralateral tectopulvinar terminals. In particular, the ipsilateral tectopulvinar projection includes a subset of large terminals (≥ 1 μm(2)) that envelop dendritic protrusions of postsynaptic dendrites. We also found that both ipsilateral and contralateral tectopulvinar terminals are significantly larger than the overall population of synaptic terminals in both the Pl and Pcm. Thus, the ipsilateral tectopulvinar projection is structurally distinct from the bilateral tectopulvinar pathway, but both tectopulvinar channels may be considered the primary or “driving” input to the Pl and Pcm.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) causes structural and functional damage to the central nervous system including the visual pathway. Defects in the afferent visual pathways affect visual function and in severe cases cause complete visual loss. Visual dysfunction is detectable by structural and functional ophthalmic examinations that are routine in the eye clinic, including examination of the pupillary light reflex and optical coherence tomography (OCT). Assessment of pupillary light reflex is a non-invasive assessment combining afferent and efferent visual function. While a assessment using a flashlight is relatively insensitive, automated pupillometry has 95% specificity and 78.1% sensitivity in detecting TBI-related visual and cerebral dysfunction with an area under the curve of 0.69-0.78. OCT may also serve as a noninvasive biomarker of TBI severity, demonstrating changes in the retinal ganglion cell layer and nerve fiber layer throughout the range of TBI severity even in the absence of visual symptoms. This review discusses the impact of TBI on visual structure and function.

Coordination between visual and motor processes is critical for the selection of stable footholds when walking in uneven terrains. While recent work (Matthis et al. in Curr Biol 8(28):1224–1233, 2018) demonstrates a tight link between gaze (visual) and gait (motor), it remains unclear which aspects of visual information play a role in this visuomotor control loop, and how the loss of this information affects that relationship. Here we examine the role of binocular information in the visuomotor control of walking over complex terrain. We recorded eye and body movements while normally-sighted participants walked over terrains of varying difficulty, with intact vision or with vision in one eye blurred to disrupt binocular vision. Gaze strategy was highly sensitive to the complexity of the terrain, with more fixations dedicated to foothold selection as the terrain became more difficult. The primary effect of increased sensory uncertainty due to disrupted binocular vision was a small bias in gaze towards closer footholds, indicating greater pressure on the visuomotor control process. Participants with binocular vision losses due to developmental disorders (i.e., amblyopia, strabismus), who have had the opportunity to develop alternative strategies, also biased their gaze towards closer footholds. Across all participants, we observed a relationship between an individual’s typical level of binocular visual function and the degree to which gaze is shifted toward the body. Thus the gaze–gait relationship is sensitive to the level of sensory uncertainty, and deficits in binocular visual function (whether transient or long-standing) have systematic effects on gaze strategy in complex terrains. We conclude that binocular vision provides useful information for locating footholds during locomotion. Furthermore, we have demonstrated that combined eye/body tracking in natural environments can be used to provide a more detailed understanding of the impact of a type of vision loss on the visuomotor control process of walking, a vital everyday task.

Objective:It was investigated whether patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) with and without optic glioma (OG) differed from the healthy control group in terms of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) parameters obtained from optic radiation.Methods:Eighty three patients and 36 healthy controls followed with the diagnosis of NF1 were included in the study. Routine MRI and DTI were applied to all subjects. Fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusity (MD), radial diffusity (RD) and axial diffusity (AD) values were calculated by placing ROI on the right and left optic radiation on colored FA maps. Patients with OG detected by conventional magnetic resonance imaging (n=19) were classified as group 1, patients with NF1 without OG (n=64) were classified as group 2 and they were compared with the healthy control group in terms of DTI parameters.Results:The right and left optic radiation FA values of the patients in group 1 and group 2 were significantly different when compared with the healthy control group. Optical radiation FA values were significantly lower than healthy control group. MD values in group 1 patients with OG were significantly higher than healthy control group. Optic radiation RD values were significantly higher in group 1 and group 2 compared with healthy control group.Conclusion:There appears to be microstructural damage in optic radiation in patients with NF1 with or without OG. The idea that changes in FA values detected in optic radiation in visual pathways in patients with NF1 can be predicted in the early period of visual impairment is promising in terms of treatment planning and management.

Warning signals are often characterized by highly contrasting, distinctive, and memorable colors. Greater chromatic (hue) and achromatic (brightness) contrast have both been found to contribute to greater signal efficacy, making longwave colored signals (e.g., red and yellow), that are perceived by both chromatic and achromatic visual pathways, particularly common. Conversely, shortwave colors (e.g., blue and ultraviolet) do not contribute to luminance perception yet are also commonly found in warning signals. Our understanding of the role of UV in aposematic signals is currently incomplete as UV perception is not universal, and evidence for its utility is at best mixed. We used visual modeling to quantify how UV affects signal contrast in aposematic heliconiian butterflies and poison frogs both of which reflect UV wavelengths, occupy similar habitats, and share similar classes of predators. Previous work on butterflies has found that UV reflectance does not affect predation risk but is involved in mate choice. As the butterflies, but not the frogs, have UV‐sensitive vision, the function of UV reflectance in poison frogs is currently unknown. We found that despite showing up strongly in UV photographs, UV reflectance only appreciably affected visual contrast in the butterflies. As such, these results support the notion that although UV reflectance is associated with intraspecific communication in butterflies, it appears to be nonfunctional in frogs. Consequently, our data highlight that we should be careful when assigning a selection‐based benefit to the presence of UV reflectance., The presence of UV aposematic signals is paradoxical as UV perception is not universal, and evidence for its utility is at best mixed. Associative memories are stored in distributed networks extending across multiple brain regions. However, it is unclear to what extent sensory cortical areas are part of these networks. Using a paradigm for visual category learning in mice, we investigated whether perceptual and semantic features of learned category associations are already represented at the first stages of visual information processing in the neocortex. Mice learned categorizing visual stimuli, discriminating between categories and generalizing within categories. Inactivation experiments showed that categorization performance was contingent on neuronal activity in the visual cortex. Long-term calcium imaging in nine areas of the visual cortex identified changes in feature tuning and category tuning that occurred during this learning process, most prominently in the postrhinal area (POR). These results provide evidence for the view that associative memories form a brain-wide distributed network, with learning in early stages shaping perceptual representations and supporting semantic content downstream., Goltstein et al. investigate the role of mouse visual cortical areas in information-integration category learning. They report widespread changes in neuronal response properties, most prominently in a higher visual area, the postrhinal cortex.

The latency of neural responses in the visual cortex changes systematically across the lifespan. Here, we test the hypothesis that development of visual white matter pathways mediates maturational changes in the latency of visual signals. Thirty‐eight children participated in a cross‐sectional study including diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) sessions. During the MEG acquisition, participants performed a lexical decision and a fixation task on words presented at varying levels of contrast and noise. For all stimuli and tasks, early evoked fields were observed around 100 ms after stimulus onset (M100), with slower and lower amplitude responses for low as compared to high contrast stimuli. The optic radiations and optic tracts were identified in each individual's brain based on diffusion MRI tractography. The diffusion properties of the optic radiations predicted M100 responses, especially for high contrast stimuli. Higher optic radiation fractional anisotropy (FA) values were associated with faster and larger M100 responses. Over this developmental window, the M100 responses to high contrast stimuli became faster with age and the optic radiation FA mediated this effect. These findings suggest that the maturation of the optic radiations over childhood accounts for individual variations observed in the developmental trajectory of visual cortex responses., This study elucidates the relationship between structural and functional properties of the visual pathways and how they change during childhood. Developmental changes of visual white matter pathways account for latency variations in electrophysiological responses of visual cortex. The present findings are an example of how relating white matter properties to functional aspects of the brain can help us reach a more complete understanding of the link between development of brain connectivity and changes in electrophysiology.

The aim of this study was to evaluate repeatability, reproducibility, and agreement of three commonly used tonometers in animal research (TonoLab, TonoVet, and TonoPEN AVIA) in a cohort of 24 rabbits. Additionally, the impact of sedation on IOP was investigated in 21 New Zealand White rabbits with the TonoVet tonometer. Repeatability was determined using the coefficient of variation (CoV) for two observers. For the TonoLab (6.55%) and TonoVet (6.38%) the CoV was lower than for the TonoPEN AVIA (10.88%). The reproducibility was highest for the TonoVet (0.2 ± 3.3 mmHg), followed by the TonoLab (0 ± 12.89 mmHg) and lowest for the TonoPEN AVIA (− 1.48 ± 10.3 mmHg). The TonoLab and TonoVet showed the highest agreement (r = 0.85, R2 = 0.73). After sedation, a significant IOP reduction (often > 25%) was observed. Our results show that among the three tonometers tested, the TonoVet tonometer is best for use in rabbits while the TonoLab should be avoided. The impact of sedation on IOP was substantial and should be taken into account during experimentation.

An experiment was conducted to compare museum visitors’ gaze patterns using mobile eye-trackers, whilst they were engaging with a physical and a virtual reality (VR) installation of Piet Mondrian’s Neo-plasticist room design. Visitors’ eye movements produced approximately 25,000 fixations and were analysed using linear mixed-effects models. Absolute and area-normalized dwell time analyses yielded mostly non-significant main effects of the environment, indicating similarity of visual exploration patterns between physical and VR settings. One major difference observed was the decrease of average fixation duration in VR, where visitors tended to more rapidly switch focus in this environment with shorter bursts of attentional focus. The experiment demonstrated the ability to compare gaze data between physical and virtual environments as a proxy to measure the similarity of aesthetic experience. Similarity of viewing patterns along with questionnaire results suggested that virtual galleries can be treated as ecologically valid environments that are parallel to physical art galleries.

Functional connectivity networks (FCN) are the physiological basis of brain synchronization to integrating neural activity. They are not rigid but can reorganize under pathological conditions or during mental or behavioral states. However, because mental acts can be very fast, like the blink of an eye, we now used the visual system as a model to explore rapid FCN reorganization and its functional impact in normal, abnormal and post treatment vision. EEG-recordings were time-locked to visual stimulus presentation; graph analysis of neurophysiological oscillations were used to characterize millisecond FCN dynamics in healthy subjects and in patients with optic nerve damage before and after neuromodulation with alternating currents stimulation and were correlated with visual performance. We showed that rapid and transient FCN synchronization patterns in humans can evolve and dissolve in millisecond speed during visual processing. This rapid FCN reorganization is functionally relevant because disruption and recovery after treatment in optic nerve patients correlated with impaired and recovered visual performance, respectively. Because FCN hub and node interactions can evolve and dissolve in millisecond speed to manage spatial and temporal neural synchronization during visual processing and recovery, we propose “Brain Spacetime” as a fundamental principle of the human mind not only in visual cognition but also in vision restoration.

Objectives COVID-19 is a multisystemic disease. Ophthalmological abnormalities are relatively rare among COVID-19-infected patients. The aim of our study was to report orbital and visual pathways MRI findings in a nationwide multicenter cohort of patients with severe COVID-19. Methods This IRB-approved retrospective multi-center study included participants presenting with severe COVID-19, who underwent brain MRI from March 4th to May 1st 2020. Two neuroradiologists (“blinded”), blinded to all data, individually analyzed morphological MRIs focusing on the orbits and the visual pathways. A second consensus reading session was performed in the case of disagreement between both readers. Clinical and ophthalmological data were compared to MRI findings. Descriptive statistical analysis and interobserver agreement for MRI reading using non-weighted Cohen kappa statistics were performed. Results 129 participants (43 [33%] women and 86 [67%] men, mean age 63 ± 14 years) were included in the study. 17/129 (13%) patients had abnormal MRI findings of the orbit or visual pathways. 11/17 (65%) patients had a FLAIR-WI hyperintense optic disc. 6/17 (35%) patients had abnormal signal of at least one of the visual pathway structures: 6/6 (100%) of the optic nerve, 1/6 (17%) of the optic chiasm, 2/6 (33%) of the optic tract and 1/6 (17%) of the optic radiations. Conclusions Our study showed that a substantial number of patients with severe COVID-19 presented with abnormal MRI findings of the orbit or visual pathways, which might lead to potentially severe visual impairment.

International audience; The retina is the entrance of the visual system. Although based on common biophysical principles the dynamics of retinal neurons is quite different from their cortical counterparts, raising interesting problems for modellers. In this paper I address some mathematically stated questions in this spirit, discussing, in particular: (1) How could lateral amacrine cell connectivity shape the spatio-temporal spike response of retinal ganglion cells ? (2) How could spatio-temporal stimuli correlations and retinal network dynamics shape the spike train correlations at the output of the retina ? These questions are addressed, first, introducing a mathematically tractable model of the layered retina, integrating amacrine cells lateral connectivity and piecewise linear rectification, allowing to compute the retinal ganglion cells receptive field together with the voltage and spike correlations of retinal ganglion cells resulting from the amacrine cells networks. Then, I review some recent results showing how the concept of spatio-temporal Gibbs distributions and linear response theory can be used to characterize the collective spike response to a spatio-temporal stimulus of a set of retinal ganglion cells, coupled via effective interactions corresponding to the amacrine cells network. On these bases, I briefly discuss several potential consequences of these results at the cortical level.

International audience; In this paper, we consider a biologically inspired spiking neural network model for motion detection. The proposed model simulates the neurons' behavior in the cortical area MT to detect different kinds of motion in image sequences. We choose the conductance-based neuron model of the Hodgkin-Huxley to define MT cell responses. Based on the center-surround antagonism of MT receptive fields, we model the area MT by its great proportion of cells with directional selective responses. The network's spiking output corresponds to an MT neuron population's firing rates and enables to extract motion boundaries. We conduct several experiments on real image sequences. The experimental results show the proposed network's ability to segregate multiple moving objects from an image sequence and reproduce the MT cells' responses. We perform a quantitative evaluation on the YouTube Motion Boundaries (YMB) dataset, and we compare the result to stateof-the-art methods for boundary detection in videos: boundary flow estimation (BF) and temporal boundary difference (BD). The proposed network model provides the best results on YMB compared to BF and BD methods.

Eye disorders spanning a range of ocular tissue are common in patients with movement disorders. Highlighting these ocular manifestations will benefit patients and may even aid in diagnosis. In this educational review we outline the anatomy and function of the ocular tissues with a focus on the tissues most affected in movement disorders. We review the movement disorders associated with ocular pathology and where possible explore the underlying cellular basis thought to be driving the pathology and provide a brief overview of ophthalmic investigations available to the neurologist. This review does not cover intracranial primary visual pathways, higher visual function, or the ocular motor system.

Cataglyphis desert ants are charismatic central place foragers. After long-ranging foraging trips, individual workers navigate back to their nest relying mostly on visual cues. The reproductive caste faces other orientation challenges, i.e. mate finding and colony foundation. Here we compare brain structures involved in spatial orientation of Cataglyphis nodus males, gynes, and foragers by quantifying relative neuropil volumes associated with two visual pathways, and numbers and volumes of antennal lobe (AL) olfactory glomeruli. Furthermore, we determined absolute numbers of synaptic complexes in visual and olfactory regions of the mushroom bodies (MB) and a major relay station of the sky-compass pathway to the central complex (CX). Both female castes possess enlarged brain centers for sensory integration, learning, and memory, reflected in voluminous MBs containing about twice the numbers of synaptic complexes compared with males. Overall, male brains are smaller compared with both female castes, but the relative volumes of the optic lobes and CX are enlarged indicating the importance of visual guidance during innate behaviors. Male ALs contain greatly enlarged glomeruli, presumably involved in sex-pheromone detection. Adaptations at both the neuropil and synaptic levels clearly reflect differences in sex-specific and caste-specific demands for sensory processing and behavioral plasticity underlying spatial orientation.

Towards the larger goal of understanding factors relevant for improving visuo-motor control, we investigated the role of visual feedback for modulating the effectiveness of a simple hand-eye training protocol. The regimen comprised a series of curve tracing tasks undertaken over a period of one week by neurologically healthy individuals with their non-dominant hands. Our three subject groups differed in the training they experienced: those who received ‘Persistent’ visual-feedback by seeing their hand and trace evolve in real-time superimposed upon the reference patterns, those who received ‘Non-Persistent’ visual-feedback seeing their hand movement but not the emerging trace, and a ‘Control’ group that underwent no training. Improvements in performance were evaluated along two dimensions—accuracy and steadiness, to assess visuo-motor and motor skills, respectively. We found that persistent feedback leads to a significantly greater improvement in accuracy than non-persistent feedback. Steadiness, on the other hand, benefits from training irrespective of the persistence of feedback. Our results not only demonstrate the feasibility of rapid visuo-motor learning in adulthood, but more specifically, the influence of visual veridicality and a critical role for dynamically emergent visual information.

Our binocular world is seamlessly assembled from two retinal images that remain segregated until the cerebral cortex. Despite the coherence of this input, there is often an imbalance between the strength of these connections in the brain. ‘Eye dominance’ provides a measure of the perceptual dominance of one eye over the other. Theoretical models suggest that eye dominance is related to reciprocal inhibition between monocular units in the primary visual cortex, the first location where the binocular input is combined. As the specific inhibitory interactions in the binocular visual system critically depend on the presence of visual input, we sought to test the role of inhibition by measuring the concentrations of inhibitory (GABA) neurotransmitters during monocular visual stimulation of the dominant and the non-dominant eye. GABA-levels were acquired in V1 using a combined functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) sequence on a 7-Tesla MRI scanner. Individuals with stronger eye dominance had a greater difference in GABAergic inhibition between the eyes. This relationship was present only when the visual system was actively processing sensory input and was not present at rest. We provide the first evidence that imbalances in GABA levels during ongoing sensory processing are related to eye dominance in the human visual cortex. This provides strong support to the view that intracortical inhibition underlies normal eye dominance.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENTWhat we see is shaped by excitation and inhibition in our brain. We investigated how eye dominance, the perceptual preference of one eye’s input over the other, is related to levels of inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA during monocular visual stimulation. GABAergic inhibition is related to eye dominance, but only when the visual system is actively processing sensory input. This provides key support for the view that imbalances in visual competition that are observed in the normal visual system arise from an inability of GABA signalling to suppress the stronger sensory representation.

The visual pathways that bypass the primary visual cortex (V1) are often assumed to support visually guided behavior in humans in the absence of conscious vision. This conclusion is largely based on findings on patients: V1 lesions cause blindness but sometimes leave some visually guided behaviors intact-this is known as blindsight. With the aim of examining how well the findings on blindsight patients generalize to neurologically healthy individuals, we review studies which have tried to uncover transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) induced blindsight. In general, these studies have failed to demonstrate a completely unconscious blindsight-like capacity in neurologically healthy individuals. A possible exception to this is TMS-induced blindsight of stimulus presence or location. Because blindsight in patients is often associated with some form of introspective access to the visual stimulus, and blindsight may be associated with neural reorganization, we suggest that rather than revealing a dissociation between visually guided behavior and conscious seeing, blindsight may reflect preservation or partial recovery of conscious visual perception after the lesion.

Bulk RNA sequencing of a tissue captures the gene expression profile from all cell types combined. Single-cell RNA sequencing identifies discrete cell-signatures based on transcriptomic identities. Six adult human corneas were processed for single-cell RNAseq and 16 cell clusters were bioinformatically identified. Based on their transcriptomic signatures and RNAscope results using representative cluster marker genes on human cornea cross-sections, these clusters were confirmed to be stromal keratocytes, endothelium, several subtypes of corneal epithelium, conjunctival epithelium, and supportive cells in the limbal stem cell niche. The complexity of the epithelial cell layer was captured by eight distinct corneal clusters and three conjunctival clusters. These were further characterized by enriched biological pathways and molecular characteristics which revealed novel groupings related to development, function, and location within the epithelial layer. Moreover, epithelial subtypes were found to reflect their initial generation in the limbal region, differentiation, and migration through to mature epithelial cells. The single-cell map of the human cornea deepens the knowledge of the cellular subsets of the cornea on a whole genome transcriptional level. This information can be applied to better understand normal corneal biology, serve as a reference to understand corneal disease pathology, and provide potential insights into therapeutic approaches.

Ocular repeated air blast injuries occur from low overpressure blast wave exposure, which are often repeated and in quick succession. We have shown that caspase-2 caused the death of retinal ganglion cells (RGC) after blunt ocular trauma. Here, we investigated if caspase-2 also mediates RGC apoptosis in a mouse model of air blast induced indirect traumatic optic neuropathy (b-ITON). C57BL/6 mice were exposed to repeated blasts of overpressure air (3 × 2 × 15 psi) and intravitreal injections of siRNA against caspase-2 (siCASP2) or against a control enhanced green fluorescent protein (siEGFP) at either 5 h after the first 2 × 15 psi (“post-blast”) or 48 h before the first blast exposure (“pre-blast”) and repeated every 7 days. RGC counts were unaffected by the b-ITON or intravitreal injections, despite increased degenerating ON axons, even in siCASP2 “post-blast” injection groups. Degenerating ON axons remained at sham levels after b-ITON and intravitreal siCASP2 “pre-blast” injections, but with less degenerating axons in siCASP2 compared to siEGFP-treated eyes. Intravitreal injections “post-blast” caused greater vitreous inflammation, potentiated by siCASP2, with less in “pre-blast” injected eyes, which was abrogated by siCASP2. We conclude that intravitreal injection timing after ocular trauma induced variable retinal and ON pathology, undermining our candidate neuroprotective therapy, siCASP2.

Threat detection plays a vital role in adapting behavior to changing environments. A fundamental function to improve threat detection is learning to differentiate between stimuli predicting danger and safety. Accordingly, aversive learning should lead to enhanced sensory discrimination of danger and safety cues. However, studies investigating the psychophysics of visual and auditory perception after aversive learning show divergent findings, and both enhanced and impaired discrimination after aversive learning have been reported. Therefore, the aim of this web-based study is to examine the impact of aversive learning on a continuous measure of visual discrimination. To this end, 205 participants underwent a differential fear conditioning paradigm before and after completing a visual discrimination task using differently oriented grating stimuli. Participants saw either unpleasant or neutral pictures as unconditioned stimuli (US). Results demonstrated sharpened visual discrimination for the US-associated stimulus (CS+), but not for the unpaired conditioned stimuli (CS−). Importantly, this finding was irrespective of the US’s valence. These findings suggest that associative learning results in increased stimulus salience, which facilitates perceptual discrimination in order to prioritize attentional deployment.

Migraines are commonly associated with a visual aura that has a characteristic clinical presentation. Cortical lesions within or in close proximity to the retrochiasmal visual pathways may also present in a manner that mimics migrainous visual phenomena and, in some cases, may be too small to manifest with a visual field defect on formal testing. We present 4 patients (3 females and 1 male) with an average age of 48.5 (range 28–67) years who had migraine-like visual disturbances related to a right temporal meningioma, occipital cavernoma, occipital lobe infarction, and demyelination in the optic radiations, which was the presenting sign of multiple sclerosis. No patient underwent neurosurgical intervention, and 1 patient (occipital lobe infarct) had complete resolution of the symptom after initial presentation. All patients had normal visual fields at follow-up and no thinning evident on optical coherence tomography. Our cases emphasize the importance of a history in assessing patients with transient positive visual phenomena and identify pathology that may present without visual field defects. Clinical features that should raise a doubt about a diagnosis of migraine visual aura include the absence of headache, brief visual disturbance lasting 60 min, and age >40, especially with no past medical history of migraine.

Although the dysregulated expression of the hypoxia-responsive VEGF-A is a major driver of ischemic retinopathies, implication of additional VEGF-family members in their pathogenesis has led to the development of multivalent anti-angiogenic tools. Designed as a decoy receptor for all ligands of VEGFR1 and VEGFR2, Aflibercept is a potent anti-angiogenic agent. Notwithstanding, the molecular mechanisms mediating Aflibercept’s efficacy remain only partially understood. Here, we used the oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR) mouse as a model system of pathological retinal vascularization to investigate the transcriptional response of the murine retina to hypoxia and of the OIR retina to Aflibercept. While OIR severely impaired transcriptional changes normally ensuing during retinal development, analysis of gene expression patterns hinted at alterations in leukocyte recruitment during the recovery phase of the OIR protocol. Moreover, the levels of Angiopoietin-2, a major player in the progression of diabetic retinopathy, were elevated in OIR tissues and consistently downregulated by Aflibercept. Notably, GO term, KEGG pathway enrichment, and expression dynamics analyses revealed that, beyond regulating angiogenic processes, Aflibercept also modulated inflammation and supported synaptic transmission. Altogether, our findings delineate novel mechanisms potentially underlying Aflibercept’s efficacy against ischemic retinopathies.

Visual perceptual learning (VPL) is typically specific to the trained location and feature. However, the degree of specificity depends upon particular training protocols. Manipulating covert spatial attention during training facilitates learning transfer to other locations. Here we investigated whether feature-based attention (FBA), which enhances the representation of particular features throughout the visual field, facilitates VPL transfer, and how long such an effect would last. To do so, we implemented a novel task in which observers discriminated a stimulus orientation relative to two reference angles presented simultaneously before each block. We found that training with FBA enabled remarkable location transfer, reminiscent of its global effect across the visual field, but preserved orientation specificity in VPL. Critically, both the perceptual improvement and location transfer persisted after one year. Our results reveal robust, long-lasting benefits induced by FBA in VPL, and have translational implications for improving generalization of training protocols in visual rehabilitation.

Blindsight is the residual visuo-motor ability without subjective awareness observed after lesions of the primary visual cortex (V1). Various visual functions are retained, however, instrumental visual associative learning remains to be investigated. Here we examined the secondary reinforcing properties of visual cues presented to the hemianopic field of macaque monkeys with unilateral V1 lesions. Our aim was to test the potential role of visual pathways bypassing V1 in reinforcing visual instrumental learning. When learning the location of a hidden area in an oculomotor search task, conditioned visual cues presented to the lesion-affected hemifield operated as an effective secondary reinforcer. We noted that not only the hidden area location, but also the vector of the saccade entering the target area was reinforced. Importantly, when the visual reinforcement signal was presented in the lesion-affected field, the monkeys continued searching, as opposed to stopping when the cue was presented in the intact field. This suggests the monkeys were less confident that the target location had been discovered when the reinforcement cue was presented in the affected field. Rapid detection and response to visual threats are critical for survival in animals. The amygdala (AMY) is hypothesized to be involved in this process, but how it interacts with the visual system to do this remains unclear. By recording flash-evoked potentials simultaneously from the superior colliculus (SC), lateral posterior nucleus of the thalamus, AMY, lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) and visual cortex, which belong to the cortical and subcortical pathways for visual fear processing, we investigated the temporal relationship between these regions in visual processing in rats. A quick flash-evoked potential (FEP) component was identified in the AMY. This emerged as early as in the LGN and was approximately 25 ms prior to the earliest component recorded in the SC, which was assumed to be an important area in visual fear. This quick P1 component in the AMY was not affected by restraint stress or corticosterone injection, but was diminished by RU38486, a glucocorticoid receptor blocker. By injecting a monosynaptic retrograde AAV tracer into the AMY, we found that it received a direct projection from the retina. These results confirm the existence of a direct connection from the retina to the AMY, that the latency in the AMY to flashes is equivalent to that in the sensory thalamus, and that the response is modulated by glucocorticoids.

Optogenetics has revolutionized neurosciences by allowing fine control of neuronal activity. An important aspect for this control is assessing the activation and/or adjusting the stimulation, which requires imaging the entire volume of optogenetically-induced neuronal activity. An ideal technique for this aim is fUS imaging, which allows one to generate brain-wide activation maps with submesoscopic spatial resolution. This study aims to test the hypothesis that children with math disability (math disability only or comorbid math and reading disabilities) have altered visual motion processing in area V5/MT compared to age-matched, typically developing children. Informal learning environments provide the opportunity to study guests’ experiences as they engage with exhibits specifically designed to invoke the emotional experience of awe. The current paper presents insight gained by using both traditional survey measures and innovative mobile eye-tracking technology to examine guests’ experiences of awe in a science museum. We present results for guests’ visual attention in two exhibit spaces, one chosen for its potential to evoke positive awe and one for negative awe, and examine associations between visual attention and survey responses with regard to different facets of awe. In this exploratory study, we find relationships between how guests attend to features within an exhibit space (e.g., signage) and their feelings of awe. We discuss implications of using both methods concurrently to shed new light on exhibit design, and more generally for working in transdisciplinary multimethod teams to move scientific knowledge and application forward.

The visual system exploits multiple signals, including monocular and binocular cues, to determine the motion of objects through depth. In the laboratory, sensitivity to different three-dimensional (3D) motion cues varies across observers and is often weak for binocular cues. However, laboratory assessments may reflect factors beyond inherent perceptual sensitivity. For example, the appearance of weak binocular sensitivity may relate to extensive prior experience with two-dimensional (2D) displays in which binocular cues are not informative. Here we evaluated the impact of experience on motion-in-depth (MID) sensitivity in a virtual reality (VR) environment. We tested a large cohort of observers who reported having no prior VR experience and found that binocular cue sensitivity was substantially weaker than monocular cue sensitivity. As expected, sensitivity was greater when monocular and binocular cues were presented together than in isolation. Surprisingly, the addition of motion parallax signals appeared to cause observers to rely almost exclusively on monocular cues. As observers gained experience in the VR task, sensitivity to monocular and binocular cues increased. Notably, most observers were unable to distinguish the direction of MID based on binocular cues above chance level when tested early in the experiment, whereas most showed statistically significant sensitivity to binocular cues when tested late in the experiment. This result suggests that observers may discount binocular cues when they are first encountered in a VR environment. Laboratory assessments may thus underestimate the sensitivity of inexperienced observers to MID, especially for binocular cues.

We describe a collection of T1-, diffusion- and functional T2*-weighted magnetic resonance imaging data from human individuals with albinism and achiasma. This repository can be used as a test-bed to develop and validate tractography methods like diffusion-signal modeling and fiber tracking as well as to investigate the properties of the human visual system in individuals with congenital abnormalities. The MRI data is provided together with tools and files allowing for its preprocessing and analysis, along with the data derivatives such as manually curated masks and regions of interest for performing tractography.

Optic flow is a perceptual cue processed for self-motion control. The aim of this study was to investigate whether postural control is modulated by the speed of radial optic flow stimuli. The experiments were performed on 20 healthy volunteers using stabilometry and surface electromyography (EMG). The subjects were instructed to fixate a central fixation point while radial optic flow stimuli were presented full field, in the foveal and in the peripheral visual field at different dots speed (8, 11, 14, 17 and 20°/s). Fixation in the dark was used as control stimulus. The EMG analysis showed that male and female subjects reacted to the stimuli with different muscle activity (main effects for gender, muscle and laterality: p < 0.001). The analysis of the center of pressure (COP) parameters showed that optic flow stimuli had a different effect on the left and right limbs of males and females (main effects of laterality: p < 0.015; interaction effects of gender and laterality: p < 0.016). The low speed of optic flow stimuli (8 and 11°/s) evoked non-uniform directions of oscillations especially in peripheral stimulation in all subjects, meaning that optic flow simulating slow self-motion stabilizes body sway.
