The Little Albert study was intended to provide data regarding the premises that an infant can be conditioned to fear a previously neutral stimulus by pairing the stimulus with one that arouses fear or avoidance, that the fear would generalize to other stimuli, and that the fear would be retained over a period of time. Despite the modest findings of the study and its limitations, the study has generated much interest in conditioning and related work since its publication.

Moderation is the practice of avoiding extremes in behaviors and opinions. Determining what moderation looks like for a particular behavior or position is difficult because what is moderate for one person may be excessive or too limiting for another due to individual circumstances. However, the concept of finding balance and avoiding excesses has been seen as a desirable personal trait since at least the days of ancient Greece. Avoidant personality disorder (AvPD) is one of the psychiatric disorders described in the American Psychiatric Association’s (APA) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR), and is included in the category of personality disorders. Personality disorders are problems in personality development that begin in childhood and continue to cause problems for a person throughout adulthood. Personality development begins in childhood, and once formed, personality remains stable throughout adulthood. Persons with personality disorders develop certain feelings about themselves and behaviors toward other people that can cause problems in their everyday functioning.
