This paper discusses an issue of language that is typical in the dissemination of published scientific research in Japan by presenting underlying data. We matched domestic and international literature databases to analyze the number of STM papers from Japan's universities in the light of languages used. The results show that Japanese academic researchers tend to use English in their original papers and Japanese in their interpretive literature, short notes and conference papers and further that English papers show little growth in the number during the past decade. It became clear that the total number of English papers from academics currently fails to reflect the values universities place on publishing research output in English. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years there has been a growing demand for objective article-level assessment of research impact. It has evolved from the trends that social media found its use in research and that the movement toward open access accelerated online dissemination of scholarly information. Researchers shifted their venues of professional communications and research workflow to the Web. Created to meet the needs of the Web Age, "altmetrics" will allow article-level, real-time measures of research impact but not citations, using social media. Being still at an early stage, "altmetrics" have the potential to develop as new complements to traditional metrics through tools development and Twitter-based citation projections. To become popular, these new metrics would need to work together with open access for mutual harmony and benefit. By proposing a conceptual model of document demands and services, this paper aims to examine changes in scholarly communication with the advent and proliferation of electronic journals. It became clear that "Big Deal" contracts and the development of institutional repositories have brought a change in the reduction of ILL requests, while the document demand itself seems to increase in general, which are affected by such factors as the increase of user population and the improvement of discoverability of articles realized by the growth of bibliographic databases available via WWW. The digitization of scholarly journals has improved the availability of journal articles, though there remain some issues such as budgets for electronic resources and accessibility to non-digitized materials.
