This study aims to develop a new spatial visualization test (SVT) for second grade primary school students. The study employed the survey design, and the test was developed in accordance with the test development steps. According to the findings obtained as a result of the pilot study, the items were generally high difficulty levels, and they were very good items. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis findings confirmed the three sub-dimensions (mental integration, mental rotation, and paper folding) measuring spatial visualization skills. SVT, which was reduced to 10 items, was administered to 396 students; the KR-20 internal consistency coefficient was 0.63, the average difficulty index was 0.35 and the average discrimination index was 0.48. As a result of the study, a valid and reliable test on spatial visualization for second grade primary school students was obtained and it was concluded that students' spatial visualization was at a low level. Dusting and blanket pollution are of particular interest in offset printing. Papers must be free of dust and loose particles to drastically reduce the wash interval of the blankets. Those particles are mainly generated during converting operations, such as sheeting. Considering the end-customer point of view, the visual aspect of the cut appears to be very important. To study in detail the influence of the sheeting parameters and paper properties on cut quality, a new test method to quantify the cut quality of woodfree coated papers has been developed. A new method and in-house device for treating secondary fiber were developed. The method is based on the fluid-jet cavitation technique. In this apparatus, pulp suspension was injected into the reacting vessel by using a high-speed jet that produced cavitation bubbles around the jet. The impact of the collapse of cavitation bubbles detached ink, binder, and other contaminants from fiber surfaces. The effects of the cavitating jet (CV-jet) treatment on deinking of the pulp from mixed office waste (MOW) and old newsprint/old magazines (ONP/OMG) mixture were studied. The basic experiments on cavitation control showed that the intensity and region of cavitation were controlled by the jet velocity and the pressure difference in the reacting vessel. The CV-jet generated broad ultrasound waves; the conventional ultrasonic apparatus generated an intrinsic frequency. The MOW test results showed that CV-jet, even without chemicals and high temperature, decreased dirt speckles and reached almost the same dirt reduction level as the mill kneader. Moreover, the CV-jet minimized fiber damage during the process. This yielded pulp handsheets giving much higher paper strength compared with pulp from the kneader. The ONP/OMG test revealed that CV-jet was superior to mill disperser in terms of ink detachment and stickies dispersion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes the possibilities of variable selection in large-scale industrial systems. It introduces knowledge-based, data-based and model-based methods for this purpose. As an example, Case-Based Reasoning application for the evaluation of the web break sensitivity in a paper machine is introduced. The application uses Linguistic Equations approach and basic Fuzzy Logic. The indicator combines the information of on-line measurements with expert knowledge and provides a continuous indication of the break sensitivity. The web break sensitivity defines the current operating situation at the paper mill and gives new information to the operators. The tourist sector in Mauritius is aiming at welcoming 2 million tourists by the year 2015 and coming up with creative ideas and products branded with 'Made in Mauritius' to boost the country's craft sector. This project looks into the manufacture of paper-yam. Different types of paper were cut into ribbons of varying widths and converted into yam by two methods: twisting and folding. The folds were made along the axis of a ribbon while twisting required prior moistening and was carried out on a modified yam-twist measuring device. The relationship between the number of folds/twists and the strength of the resulting paper yam was investigated. Yam of high quality can be obtained by twisting ribbons of relatively smaller widths or folding relatively wider ribbons. The yam can be used for manufacturing craft products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Drawing on our experience requesting access to police organisations in Ghana and Niger, this article explores the organisation and operation of two West African bureaucracies. It focuses on the administrative modes and the state agents' routines in their dealing with civil actors. Exceptional and risk carrying requests such as ours concerning a permission to conduct participant observation in police organisations create insecurity on the part of the bureaucrats concerned. Although rarely expressed in field reports and often discounted as a series of fortunate coincidences, we consider the researcher's access (or refusal) a crucial and illuminating moment of fieldwork. In our case, both technical bureaucratic operations and informal networks played a central role in our own approach as well as in the state agents' work routines and reflections on their daily occupation. Following an emic description, we call these two modes of procedure "ground work" and "paper work". The oscillating between the two reflects an inevitable interlacing of bureaucratic and informal operations, characteristic for bureaucratic organisations worldwide. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents information on the restoration technique through paper splitting in reconstructing historical prints. The restoration technique has been published by Michel Hennin in 1856, in Paris France. The method of paper splitting technique is the splitting of one sheet of paper into two thinner sheets of the same dimension. Several artists have performed the paper slitting method in restoration of the old portraits including William A. Baldwin, restorer of the engraved portrait of Henri IV; Alfred Bonnardot, and the infamous German restorer, Max Schweidler.

The article discusses the aspects to be considered in the art of designing pop-ups, called paper engineering. The author explains that the challenge associated with the most elaborate pop-up constructions is achieving the total vision which entails a combination of mechanics, architecture, and visual image that unite into a magical world-on-a-page. The more knowledgeable an artist about mediums and production processes, the more satisfying the results. The author shares her own foray into the art of the pop-up that started after graduating from Washington University's School of Fine Arts as a painting major.

This paper describes the findings of a technical study of the materials and techniques used by Honore Daumier for works on canvas, panel and paper, with special regard to the similarity between techniques used by the artist for all three supports. Thirteen paintings (five on canvas and eight on panel) and seven works on paper were examined using a range of techniques to characterize materials and methods used by the artist to create these works. Our findings suggest that materials and methods of application traditionally associated with works on paper were used by Daumier also for his works on canvas and panel supports. Materials include those usually associated with drawings, such as charcoal, lithographic crayon, and thin washes of water- and oil-based paint and ink, applied with quill and reed pens. Bacteria often cause infections, and we take antibiotics to help us recover. Antibiotics are like magic pills that have saved millions of lives. However, the overuse of antibiotics is now making bacteria evolve fast and evade these antibiotics. A few bacteria like the purple one in the petri plate (Figure 1) have evolved a way to dodge and not get killed by one particular kind of antibiotic. The day might come soon when not a single antibiotic would work, and we could die of even tiny paper cuts. In this article, we discuss what antibiotics are, how they target bacteria, and why bacteria are suddenly becoming resistant to antibiotics. We include a list of ten points that each of us must follow and a pledge for everyone to take, to help stop the spread of antibiotic resistance. • Staying can be an alternate climate change adaptation strategy. • Staying and mobility are re-imagined with ideas of resilience and evolution. • Four key research areas linking climate change, staying and resilience. • Historical context and translocal networks shape immobility. • Equity and governance identify population differentials and choice of im(mobility). This paper brings work on mobility and 'staying' together with theoretical ideas of resilience to consider responses to climate change. To date, the majority of work that has explored the impacts of climate change on human populations has taken a migration-centred perspective, with an emphasis on mobility as a key response in crises, including extreme climatic events and civil conflict. However, evidence suggests that people may alternatively – and pro-actively – adopt a different approach involving "staying" as a climate change adaptation strategy. This is important as recent evolutionary approaches to resilience have highlighted how resilience is an on-going process of adaptation which emphasises the temporal, fluid and open-ended aspects of individuals' experiences and practices in shaping everyday lives. In turn, this means that individuals' experiences and practices can lead to different strategies of staying (as well as moving) in the face of climate change. Consequently, the paper highlights four key areas where more research is required in order to explore the links between climate change, 'staying' and resilience. These include the importance of historical context in disentangling and contextualising the "multicausal" nature of individuals' mobility decisions; translocal networks in shaping mobility or immobility; the influence of equity, diversity and gendered social expectations on staying; and the importance of governance responses in facilitating resilience, adaptation and subsequent decisions by individuals to stay or move. Software-Defined Networking (SDN) has three key features: separation of control and forwarding, centralized control, and network programmability. While improving network management flexibility, SDN has many security issues. This paper systemizes the security threats of SDN using spoofing, tampering, repudiation, information disclosure, denial of service, and elevation of privilege (STRIDE) model to understand the current security status of SDN. First, we introduce the network architecture and data flow of SDN. Second, we analyze security threats of the six types given in the STRIDE model, aiming to reveal the vulnerability mechanisms and assess the attack surface. Digital Twin is a contemporary digital representation paradigm that is capable of encompassing the complex interactions within the natural environment. By building biodiversity Digital Twin solutions we may reveal anthropogenic effects that cause loss in biodiversity and discover the pathways that can better uncover, diminish or prevent these effects. Developing Digital Twin Applications for biodiversity has unique challenges, like the hybrid and heterogeneous nature of biodiversity modelling, model co-simulation, the demand for highly variable computational power and the incorporation of data and models to existing research infrastructures. In this paper a state of the art survey is provided with application to the field of biodiversity. We identify broad categories of challenges that need to be tackled to deliver reliable, sustainable and scalable Digital Twin solutions. Teaching should be dynamic and growing. We should strive to instill in our students those qualities that will enable them to excel in all environments. This paper is a working example, complete with tested exercises to illustrate and assist in the growing challenge to arm our students with the tools necessary to be successful, not only in the classroom, but beyond. Flexibility and adaptability are important development strategies. Disruption need not be a precursor to paralysis, but instead may ignite creativity and invention. With the appropriate skill sets our students will be equipped to challenge traditional dogma and view issues from multiple perspectives and lenses. This may be accomplished by teaching new approaches and practicing them as well. One example would be to study trends, expanding our capacity to teach from multiple views, not fearing disruptions, but looking at them in a new light, thinking outside the box, going against the norm, coining them as nurturing brilliant ideas that are disrupting the rules of the game. This paper foregrounds the work of the labourer in infrastructural projects. It draws upon over 6 years of ethnographic study with road construction labourers in the upper Himalayas positioning them as subaltern subjects within discourses of national development. While the subaltern studies project of the 1980s emphasized the 'writing back into history' of the non-elite, primarily peasants, tribal populations and women who too contributed to the imagination of the nation; at the contemporary moment where infrastructure defines national development we need to revisit the subaltern project to draw attention to the forgotten labourers who literally construct the nation and its infrastructure. After arguing for recognition of the labour as intrinsic to infrastructural and national constructions, I discuss possibilities for a dialogic engagement with the subaltern. Pushing the debates within subaltern geographies on the politics of representation, I argue that perhaps the way forward is not about giving voice but about making space. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Traffic light and traffic sign detection are important in the field of self-driving. They can guide vehicles to drive safely on the road. It is difficult for existing algorithms of object detection to detect targets simultaneously and achieve high accuracy. In this paper, a dual-model framework is proposed to detect traffic light and signs for a self-driving vehicle based on prior information. This framework can switch the detection model according to the prior information. The color information of the traffic sign is used to extract the ROI and improve the detection efficiency. The work of this paper also includes collecting and annotating a large amount of image data to apply the model trained on the proposed framework to self-driving. Shakespeare's tragedies are simple to understand yet at the same time. They are complex to portray. His grasp on how humans respond coupled with ghosts, murderous villains and many fancy soliloquies continue to find their place in different cultures all around the world. This has inspired various filmmakers to not only find inspiration from his work but also attempt to rejuvenate its artistic soul by touching it with their auteur. This research paper explores the works of Vishal Bhardwaj in his attempt to adapt Shakespeare into Indian cinema. Through studying and objectively analysing his trilogy of films (Maqbool, Omkara and Haider) with a close reference to Shakespeare corresponding plays (Macbeth, Othello and Hamlet) respectively, the paper aims to highlight the nexus between the culture and how human emotions remain consistent despite it. The plot, context and the characters of the film will be analysed and compared with the original text of the plays to bring attention to the similarities and the differences that exist between the two, which in turn will highlight how Indian culture has affected and evolved the original tragedies to suit its taste. The paper also aims to highlight the auteur of Vishal Bhardwaj as a scriptwriter, director and song composer and highlights the resonance in his three works despite the cinematic age gap between them. The antenna cabin is a strong scattering source of various military platforms, and its stealth effect directly affects the stealth effect of military platforms such as missiles. Aiming at limitations of stealth FSS radome, design method of absorbing electromagnetic window structure is carried out in this paper. Based on the transmission line model, this paper introduces its working mechanism, proposes an analytical method and a complete design method. The structure proposed in this paper realizes pass-band at X-band (8-10GHz) and absorption in S-band (2-4GHz). After a series of simulations and optimizations, at least 10dB absorption in S-band and less than 1 dB insert loss in 8-10GHz are realized. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Globalization has created a need for culturally aware globally minded students across North America. Study abroad has increasingly become a normalized part of a young person's education however financial and temporal commitments attached to longer study abroad experiences hinder participation for many. In response, the field school model, which generally involves shorter stays and less financial commitment, has increased in popularity. The field school is a particular model of study abroad that shares characteristics with short-term study abroad, fieldwork, service learning and other models but requires definition. The purpose of this paper is to define the field school model of study abroad within the contest of study to assist administrators when presented the option, faculty when determining experiential learning opportunities and students in determining their educational path.
