All refereed convention papers sponsored by the Magazine Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) in the period 1999-2008 were content analyzed. Benchmarks for both institutional and individual magazine research productivity were established within the framework of the Carnegie Classification System. A gender gap regarding both top paper productivity and regular refereed paper productivity was determined. While female authors dominated top paper productivity, male authors commanded regular paper productivity. A strong correlation between institutional top paper productivity and institutional regular paper productivity was identified though a weak link between individual top paper productivity and individual regular paper productivity was also found. Abstract: This paper studies how missing data in the PageRank algorithm influences the result of papers ranking and proposes PrestigeRank algorithm on that basis. We make use of PrestigeRank to give the ranking of all papers in physics in the Chinese Scientific and Technology Papers and Citation Database (CSTPCD) published between 2004 and 2006. We compared PrestigeRank result with PageRank and citation ranking. We found PrestigeRank is significantly correlated with PageRank and citation counts. We also used paper citation networks to rank journals, and compared the result with that of journal citation networks. We proposed PR sum , PR ave , and compared both of them with citation counts and impact factor. It indicates PR sum , PR ave can reflect journal''s authority favorably. We also discuss the advantages and disadvantages, application scope and application prospects of PrestigeRank in the evaluation of papers and journals. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The article discusses research on the inappropriate use of citations in marine biology papers. It references a study by Peter A. Todd at the National University of Singapore, and his colleagues, published in the June 3, 2010 issue of "Marine Ecology Progress Series." The researchers studied several randomly selected papers from 33 marine biology and other related journals. They conclude that bibliometric-based performance indicators have a disproportionate impact on tenure and promotion, institution ranking and grant capture. They add that poor citing behavior has several corrosive effects, which are highly relevant to junior scientists.

Abstract: Background: Since the International Journal of Obstetric Anesthesia (IJOA) was first published in 1991, barriers to conducting and publishing research in the UK have increased, as has the pressure to improve practitioners’ curricula vitae. We speculated that the type and geographical origin of abstracts and papers published in IJOA might reflect these changes. Methods: We analysed all substantive papers and Obstetric Anaesthetists’ Association abstracts published in IJOA, using online access. Full articles and abstracts were categorised and the location of the submitting hospital recorded. Those published in the period 1991-99 inclusive were compared with those in 2000-08. Results: A total of 890 substantive papers were reviewed, 387 in 1991-99 and 503 in 2000-08. We found non-significant changes (P = 0.065) in the type of paper between the two time periods; the number (proportion) of observational studies increased from 178 (46%) to 256 (51%), respectively, while randomised and non-randomised interventional trials remained similar. Changes in geographical origin were also not significant (P = 0.17), with most coming from the UK and outside Europe. Non-UK European papers accounted for only 54 (14%) and 65 (13%), respectively. Abstract numbers have increased greatly, from 190 in 1991-99 to 702 in 2000-08, with increases in all categories but a doubling of the proportion of observational studies and a reduced proportion of interventional trials: observational 17% and 34% respectively; randomised 23% and 13% respectively; and non-randomised interventional 29% and 26% respectively (P < 0.0001). Most abstracts were from the UK although this proportion fell from 92% in 1991-99 to 86% in 2000-08, whilst those from non-UK European countries and the rest of the world increased (respectively 2% and 6% in 1991-99; 7% and 8% in 2000-08; P = 0.001). Conclusion: Substantive papers and abstracts show different trends but observational studies are the most frequent type in both forms of presentation. Trends in abstracts suggest a decrease in the proportion of randomised controlled trials, although the absolute numbers of interventional trials has increased. Writing a paper may seem like a daunting process for the inexperienced researcher (and sometimes for those who are experienced!). SERJ has provided a high quality professional publication venue for researchers in statistics education for close to a decade. This paper presents a review of the articles published to explore what they suggest about the field of statistics education, the researchers, the questions addressed, and the growing knowledge base on teaching and learning statistics. We present a detailed analysis of these articles in order to address the following questions: What is being published and why, who is publishing research in SERJ, how is the research being carried out, and what do the results suggest about future research? This article discusses the content of volume 12 of the journal "Sociological Papers." The issue includes essays about Russian-Jewish emigrants from the Soviet Union, written by immigrant scholars. The essays exhibit the variety of experiences of the migrants from the Former Soviet Union (FSU) in the different countries in which they have settled. The first essay uses the notion of transnationalism, a concept adapted to migration issues from international economics. Another essay concerns with their cultural interests and institutions, concentrating on artistic events, libraries and bookshops.

This research explored the criteria that reviewers use in reviewing empirical manuscripts submitted for publication consideration in tourism, travel and hospitality journals. Forty-three reviewers were asked to state the key areas that they look at when reviewing a manuscript. The Nud.ist programme was used in the analysis of their answers. Eight key areas were identified. Reviewers almost always stated the need for the paper to make a contribution. However, they also frequently mentioned being “innovative or unique”; thus, originality appears to be a significant criterion to many reviewers. Careless writing and presentation appeared to have significant impact on the reviewers’ reaction to a manuscript. It is also evident from the comments that the manuscript that leaves “so what?” question will not be recommended. Among the other critical elements for the acceptance/rejection decision are the use of literature, quality of arguments, appropriateness in relation to the mission and focus of the journal, research methodology and data analysis, and research implications. The authors aiming to publish may benefit from the study by being cognisant of the reviewers’ sensitivities to these aspects. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Many academic papers that are to be submitted to refereed conferences and journals have been previously exposed to the author's colleagues. The term 'preprints' has long been used to describe such documents. 'Departmental Working Paper' series were for many years a conventional vehicle for their publication. In the modern world, preprints are frequently transmitted electronically, variously as e-mail attachments and as files available for download via FTP or HTTP. When a preprint is made available electronically, it is likely that the author provides the recipient not only with a copy, but also with a copyright licence. In most cases, however, the licence is only implicit, and the terms of the licence are unclear. This creates the potential for considerable uncertainties, and those uncertainties are of serious concern in the context of tension between for-profit publishers of refereed articles and the research communities that referee and edit them gratis, and depend on them for early access to information. This paper briefly reviews the open content and ePrints movements, considers the interests of the various stakeholders, proposes a set of licence terms intended to satisfy the needs of all parties, and concludes that a particular Creative Commons licence type should be applied to all electronic preprints. This study presents a unique approach in investigating the knowledge diffusion structure for the field of data quality through an analysis of the main paths. We study a dataset of 1880 papers to explore the knowledge diffusion path, using citation data to build the citation network. The main paths are then investigated and visualized via social network analysis. This paper takes three different main path analyses, namely local, global, and key-route, to depict the knowledge diffusion path and additionally implements the g-index and h-index to evaluate the most important journals and researchers in the data quality domain. This article presents information about the recycled paper used by the Ecological Society of America for publishing the journal "Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment." From August 2005, the Society have started to print the journal on 100% recycled, 10% post-consumer waste, acid-free, processed chlorine-free paper. The new paper is manufactured by American Eagle, a small mill which makes only recycled paper. The cover page of the journal also uses a 50% recycled, 15% post-consumer sheet, treated with an aqueous glaze, and it is also fully recyclable.
