Cognitive Behavioral Group Therapy (CBGT), which involves restructuring maladaptive thoughts and exposures in social contexts in a group format, is an empirically supported treatment for social anxiety disorder (SAD). However, research on applying these skills to experiences of discrimination that may contribute to social anxiety in marginalized populations is limited. A case description is presented to demonstrate the ways in which culturally sensitive adaptations of CBGT were applied to treat social anxiety related to issues of discrimination. The case example includes outcome data from one individual diagnosed with SAD who experienced clinical improvement in symptoms of SAD after receiving CBGT as a part of a larger treatment trial for SAD. Specifically, this paper focuses on the way in which SAD manifested for a Latina woman based on a history, and current context of race-based and gender-based discrimination. We present strategies to address SAD related to experiences of discrimination within the context of CBGT as well as clinical implications related to the integration of multicultural principles and traditional cognitive behavioral therapies for SAD more generally. Integrated behavioral health (IBH) in primary care is growing as an approach to decrease barriers and provide earlier intervention for youth experiencing behavioral and mental health symptoms. However, increasing access to mental health providers alone without ensuring evidence-based treatment (EBT) is provided will not sufficiently address the current mental health crisis. To spread to scale, IBH needs to be implemented and tested in community-based practices with integrity to EBT. This paper provides a model for implementing cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in community pediatric primary care via master's prepared therapists through an academic-community partnership. This paper describes the hiring practices, training in CBT, ongoing supervision and consultation, and use of data to inform the evolution of the model. Using a retrospective review of the rate of emergency department (ED) admissions per 1,000 patients with a diagnosis of depression, we compared practices enrolled in our academic-community partnership IBH model to practices who implemented their own IBH and practices with no IBH. Across a four-year period, we found that practices enrolled in the academic-community partnership IBH model had a lower number of patients per 1,000 patients with a diagnosis of depression admitted to the ED with behavioral health concerns compared to practices that did not incorporate an IBH therapist. There was no difference in ED admission rates per 1,000 between practices that hired their own IBH and those without IBH. Background: Children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often experience symptoms of various mental disorders along with the characteristics that define ASD. High rates of several psychiatric disorders have been reported in people with ASD such as anxiety, depression, cognitive problems, emotional regulation difficulties and related behavioral problems can occur in children of all ages with ASD. There are many treatment programs that can help autistic persons cope with these symptoms. Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and more are treatment programs that can help people with autism recognize and manage their symptoms. Aim: This paper examines through bibliographic sources of the last 15 years the possible mental disorders that a child or adolescent with ASD may experience, as well as the therapeutic interventions that can help to manage them. Methodology: For the present bibliographic research, 15 scientific articles from English journals were used. The databases from which the scientific articles were found were PubMed, PsycINFO, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar. Results: According to the results of various studies, children and adolescents with autism show various symptoms of psychological disorders such as Anxiety Disorders, Depression and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. The combination of CBT and ICT can help people with autism recognize and manage their symptoms. Discussion: The various symptoms of disorders that children and adolescents with autism experience can have a major impact on their family, their daily life, their schooling, and their future work. Over the years clinicians have been making efforts to culturally adapt CBT to various groups. This paper discusses the assessment and treatment of a young female from Pakistan with depression and anxiety with comorbid headache. After ruling out all organic causes, the treatment continued over 20 sessions with the initial phase consisting of introduction to CBT, risk assessment, and identification of treatment goals. Following this, the patient was helped in identifying automatic thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Finally, tools such as thought substitutions, reappraisals, and positive diversions were used effectively to decrease automatic negative thoughts. A focus on the patient's religio-cultural identity was maintained throughout. Understanding of contextual factors like religio-cultural values and family dynamics helped to bring about favorable therapy outcomes. A case conceptualization that cohesively addressed factors relating to ethnicity, class, and gender yielded a positive result in our case. Involvement of the family and psychoeducation regarding neurobiological causes also proved to be helpful. While many youths recover from concussions within several weeks, a subset of patients experience persistent postconcussive symptoms (PPCS), lasting 4 weeks or longer. Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is associated with several destructive behaviors, including suicide and nonsuicidal self-injury. The devastating effects of BPD impact individuals with BPD, their relationships, and the mental health of significant others (SOs), which research suggests may be suboptimal. Few BPD interventions incorporate SOs into treatment, despite research suggesting that both emotion dysregulation and relationship dysfunction contribute to the maintenance of BPD. Incorporating SOs into treatment presents an opportunity to optimize BPD outcomes, while dismantling emotional and relational factors that maintain BPD and improving SO mental health. This paper describes the development of Sage, a 12-session conjoint psychotherapy intervention delivered to individuals with BPD who engage in suicidal and nonsuicidal self-injurious behavior, or have suicidal ideation, and their SOs. It is designed to simultaneously target BPD pathology, relationship functioning, and SO mental health. Sage is a time-limited cognitive-behavioral intervention that is primarily informed by cognitive-behavioral conjoint therapy for posttraumatic stress disorder (Monson & Fredman, 2012) and dialectical behavior therapy (Linehan, 1993, 2015). Aim. Around 2.5% of Poles will develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) during their lifetime. Recent events, i.e. the pandemic and the war in Ukraine, are the factors that will increase the number of people dealing with PTSD. Owing to that, this paper aims to review and familiarise readers with the available scientific evidence on psychotherapies of PTSD provided in Poland. Method. A review of meta-analyses of randomised controlled trials and a review of the most recent treatment guidelines concerning PTSD. Results. The best available evidence points to high efficacy of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) with prolonged exposure and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR). Humanistic therapy also proves effective to a certain degree, but not as effective as therapies that use exposure to stimuli and memories associated with trauma. There is no evidence of the efficacy of psychodynamic therapy and methods based on polyvagal theory. Organisations preparing guidelines recommend primarily CBT and EMDR. Conclusions. Efficacious treatment of PTSD should include a protocol with a component of exposure to trauma-related memories and stimuli. While advancements have been made in the development of guidelines when providing mental health care to TGD clients, gaps remain, particularly related to concrete applications of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) approaches to address the unique mental health needs of TGD people. Such gaps leave many mental health professionals inadequately prepared to assess and treat clinical distress in TGD people, which in turn maintains health disparities. Utilizing case vignettes reflecting diverse TGD identities, this paper discusses minority stress and intersectional stigma frameworks and demonstrates their integration with CBT principles in the delivery of culturally tailored assessment, case conceptualization, and treatment of TGD clients. Since the publication of Goleman’s book, in 1996, there has been an explosion in the use of his arguments that emotions are those which really generate cognitions and not the other way around. According to a layman’s point of view, people who feel certain emotions, they then think how to execute them. To use one of the main emotions, the author speaks about in most pages of his book, is that of anger: anger is a very strong emotion; one may become passive aggressive; another may employ it as a response to a real or hypothetical external threat. As a process -using an emotion to generate thinking- seems and sounds to be correct, and primarily I would agree to that, however does that mean that this is the only scientific/methodological answer? This paper is a review on Goleman’s argument and attempts to present conceptual shortcomings which haven’t been taken into consideration when the author was presenting his argument. In this review, the order we follow to outline our counterargument to emotional intelligence are the cognitive and behavioural ABC (activating event-beliefs-consequences) models in the relationship between a trigger, a thought pattern, an emotional presentation, and a behavioural reaction, according to the CBT (cognitive-behavioural therapy) perspective. In this paper, there will also be offered connections between the emotional intelligence argument and a writing by Voltaire, a writing by Schwab & Maleret, a writing by Soros, and a writing by Bock-Côté. Although the topic of client attraction is comprehensively covered in the psychoanalytic and psychodynamic literature, it is woefully neglected in our cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) focused training programs and literature. This paper aims to address this gap by using CBT principles to provide explanations for why clients develop feelings of attraction to their therapists. In addition, this paper offers general guidelines for how to manage client attraction from a CBT perspective. Three case vignettes are used to illustrate those concepts. With the goal of efficiently moving the results of these clinical trials into real-world clinical practice, this paper offers a model for adapting existing evidence-based practices originally developed for the general population to be lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer (LGBQ)-affirmative. The adaptation model presented here guides clinicians to incorporate six LGBQ-affirmative transtheoretical principles of change into practice. These principles facilitate raising awareness of the impact of minority stress on sexual minority clients' mental health and on client self-evaluation while drawing upon sexual minority resilience and intersectional experiences to build empowering coping skills and validating relationships. The adaptation model also provides a transtheoretical approach to case conceptualization that directs clinicians to consider the role of early and ongoing minority stress on sexual minority clients' cognitive, affective, motivational, behavioral, and self-evaluative experiences that maintain current distress. This case conceptualization approach highlights common associations among these experiences, suggesting clear routes of interventions for many sexual minority client presentations. Case examples from recent clinical trials of LGBQ-affirmative cognitive-behavioral therapy illustrate how these principles and this case conceptualization can be effectively utilized in practice. While the principles and case conceptualization are meant to be transtheoretical and therefore applicable across therapeutic techniques, to date they have been tested only in clinical trials for cognitive-behavioral treatments. Therefore, this paper concludes with a call for future research to determine the effectiveness of implementing this adaptation model across diverse therapeutic modalities and client presentations. This special feature in Cognitive and Behavioral Practice is a commemoration to Aaron T. Beck's contributions to the science and practice of CBT. The fact that so many leading scholars participated, including several Past Presidents of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, speaks volumes about the high regard held for Beck. Included are papers that cover the Beckian model of depression, its refinement and application to obsessions, compulsions, hoarding, as well as how the model addresses interpretational biases in emotional psychopathology and has been adapted for youth. Additionally there are papers conveying how Beck's phenomenological approach to understanding the client's perspective is useful in attending to cultural differences, and in mitigating the mental health impact of marginalization and discrimination. Expert commentaries are extended to relational processes (case formulation, therapeutic relationship, collaboration and guided discovery, alliance, rupture repair, homework), change processes (cognitive reappraisal, dialectical thinking, acceptance and defusion, emotional schemas), and to important scientific advances (conceptualizing processes within techniques, data analytic advances that bridge the scientist-practitioner gap, and technology augmentation). • Massed, evidence-based psychotherapies for PTSD have proliferated since 2010. • A variety of massed formats show low dropout and significant symptom improvements. • There are unique advantages for both patients and providers to condensing treatment. • The time-limited nature of massed treatment creates specific challenges as well. Despite strong evidence of their effectiveness in reducing symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), prolonged exposure therapy (PE) and cognitive processing therapy (CPT) remain challenging for some service members and veterans to access and complete. Delivering PE and CPT in time-condensed or "massed" formats may reduce barriers to receiving care. PE and CPT have now been implemented across a range of tempos (e.g., multiple sessions per day across 1 week, one session per day for 3 weeks) and to multiple target populations, in a variety of contexts from individual therapy alone to full intensive outpatient programs. A massed format of treatment delivery has advantages for both patients and providers, including quicker time to recovery, less opportunity for avoidance, and improved treatment completion rates. The time-limited nature of massed treatment also creates accompanying challenges, such as less time to practice homework and greater impact when factors delay or disrupt progress. This paper discusses lessons learned from providers across diverse settings who are experienced in both delivering massed PE and CPT and managing such programs, primarily with military populations. Introduction: Dementia is a progressive syndrome that interferes with the individual's ability to perform activities of daily living (ADL). Cognitive stimulation (CS) is a non-pharmacological approach aimed to mitigate the impact of dementia symptoms. While CS has been shown to provide benefits for cognition and quality of life, the evidence supporting its use in improving ADL outcomes is reduced. The aim of this review was to chart what is known from the literature about the use of CS in improving ADL outcomes. Method: A scoping review of the use of CS in improving ADL outcomes for individuals with mild-to-moderate dementia was conducted, following a scoping review methodological framework. Eight databases were searched, including all articles published up until June 2022. Findings: A three-step search strategy yielded 788 results. Following screening and review, 36 papers met the inclusion criteria for this review. Studies were charted and discussed in the areas of (1) cognitive stimulation therapy; (2) group CS programmes; (3) multi-component CS interventions; (4) individual CS programmes and (5) other types of CS. Conclusion: The review identified a range of CS programmes from across 13 countries worldwide. This paper provides an overview of the of digital mental health (DMHI) interventions for depression. The paper begins with a description of the clinical context and services needs for persons experiencing depressed mood. It is well-known that there is a large gap between the availability of evidence-supported psychotherapy for depression and the large number of people who would likely benefit from it. DHMIs based on a cognitive-behavioral (CBT) model have shown substantial promise as a method to deliver tested-effective treatment to large numbers of people experiencing depression. The article continues with a review of clinical research evaluating DMHIs for depression with a special emphasis on CBT. The article also reviews both the strengths and challenges associated with the clinical use of DHMI for depression. Next, the article continues with a description of a newly-developed DHMI for depression that uses an entertaining approach to deliver well-established CBT strategies. Treatment engagement in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is associated with positive outcomes. Technology-based tools present an opportunity to facilitate engagement in CBT. This paper will first review specific CBT engagement-related constructs, modalities/formats for applying technology in treatment delivery, specific engagement features available in CBT-based apps, and the relationship between CBT engagement and outcome. The Fogg Behavior Model may inform a process for enhancing CBT engagement, specifically utilizing technology towards achieving perceived simplicity and activating behaviors. Two vignettes are presented that apply the Fogg Behavior Model (FBM) and Persuasive Design framework to illustrate CBT engagement related constructs and practical considerations in applying technology-based tools to support CBT engagement. The vignettes focus on homework adherence with a thought record as well as activity scheduling. • Metacognitive therapy (MCT) is an effective treatment for anxiety and depression. • In this article we trace the historical development of MCT. • We explain why the metacognitive approach has developed into a promising perspective. • We argue that MCT may mark a paradigm shift in psychotherapy. • Its development may serve as a blueprint for advancement in clinical psychology. Metacognitive therapy (MCT) is proving to be an effective treatment for anxiety and depression with effects that may exceed CBT. It has been described as a paradigm shift in psychotherapy in its theory-driven cognitive science approach and systematic development and evaluation. MCT was developed by Adrian Wells based on an information processing theory, the Self-Regulatory Executive Function model by Wells and Matthews. MCT theory formulates psychological disorders as sharing common causal factors under the influence of metacognition, representing a particular top-down model of biases in cognitive regulation. A key clinical implication was that a core set of interventions could be developed to impact a wide range of symptoms and disorders. In this paper, we trace the historical development of MCT and the major studies that informed theory and practice with the aim of introducing clinicians and researchers to this area and to understand why the metacognitive approach has developed into a treatment that is proving to be potentially more effective than current gold-standard treatments. In doing so, we will draw out the distinctive features of the approach and explore how this might offer a blueprint for scientific advancement in clinical psychology and psychotherapy. • No research has been published around the usage of CBT for postamputation chronic pain. • A case study utilizing CBT-Chronic Pain was successful in treating pain in a primary care setting. • This paper highlights the need for research into CBT for postamputation chronic pain. Limb amputation has a significant impact on an individual, not only physically but emotionally. Consequences of both traumatic and atraumatic amputations are vast and can result in functional disability, impaired emotional functioning, and changes in overall quality of life. These consequences may be further complicated by the development of chronic pain. Traditional management of postamputation chronic pain often involves invasive procedures and pharmacotherapy. While research notes behavioral interventions, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) as a viable treatment alternative for chronic pain, there is no literature supporting CBT for postamputation chronic pain. In this case report, we present a 63-year-old male lower limb amputee complicated with chronic pain who experienced pain reduction and improved quality of life following manualized treatment with CBT for chronic pain. Treatment took place over 12 sessions with fidelity (93%) being measured throughout to ensure accurate utilization of the treatment manual. As part of the treatment manual, self-report measures (Pain Rating Scale, Pain Catastrophizing Scale, Pain Outcomes Questionnaire, and subjective units of distress) were used throughout to track patient progress. • Attrition in obesity treatment is perhaps the greatest impediment to success. • Cognitive barriers decrease treatment engagement and cause attrition. • Anthropomorphisms may help clients understand and combat cognitive barriers. • The "Stymie Beasts" offer a compelling way to conceptualize cognitive barriers. This paper focuses on one of the most significant barriers, especially for teenagers and their families, to the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for weight management: high rates of attrition. Cognitive barriers contribute to attrition and to decreasing commitment to full engagement in the process (deliberate practice). Excuses capture the essence of one type of those cognitive barriers. Excuses are defined as shifts in attribution from self-focused causes of struggles to achieve goals to more externally-focused causes—resulting in decreasing full engagement. Those excuses (shifts in attribution) do not just happen. People make decisions to implement those shifts away from personal responsibility. Ten cognitive biases lie at the heart of such problematic delusional decision making. This paper identifies seven excuses created by that biased decision making as anthropomorphisms called Stymie Beasts. Such unique simply worded visually distinctive creatures may help improve recall and focus on these powerful antagonists to successful weight control. Then, the use of two CBT techniques, Therapeutic Understanding of Science (TUS) and Rational Emotive Therapy (RET), illustrated with examples for all seven Stymie Beasts, shows how CBT may prevent and dismantle those Beasts (excuses). The use of multicultural principles to enhance cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for individuals of marginalized backgrounds has received increased attention in light of the heightened national awareness of systemic oppression and racialized violence directed towards Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. However, there has been less of a focus on applying such principles to consultation for skill development. If ethical guidelines are expected to influence the behavior of clinicians in session, guidance is needed to indicate how and where and when clinicians should receive training in implementing culturally responsive CBT. Individual reading and reflection are necessary but are not sufficient in acquiring new clinical skills. Consultation is recommended and strongly suggested when clinicians are working with new populations or delivering a new treatment, or even using a new modality. Consultation can also be useful when adopting a new approach or stance to therapy. For practicing clinicians who have not developed these skills, additional consultation can and should be used to address this gap. Moving forward, integration of cultural responsiveness into standard consultation will ensure that these skills are seen as a core competency, rather than an optional additional skill that may be (or not be) elected. This paper presents core experiences that may be integral to a CBT consultation model that aims to enhance providers' ability to provide CBT in a way that is culturally responsive to their clients. These recommendations attend to both content and process within CBT consultation and reflect guiding assumptions for helping clinicians to develop the ability to practice CBT in a culturally responsive manner, including (a) normalizing discussions of cultural identity and oppression, (b) an emphasis on cultural self-awareness, (c) emphasizing culturally informed CBT case conceptualization, and (d) skill development in applying cultural elements to CBT interventions. Introduction: People with severe mental health problems often struggle to manage everyday tasks such as personal hygiene, housework, shopping, cooking and budgeting. These functional problems result in self-neglect and are associated with specific cognitive impairments and poor outcomes. Despite their importance, little guidance is available for practitioners in how to address these problems. Method: We conducted a systematic review of the research literature published since 1990 on the effectiveness of interventions that aim to assist people with severe mental health problems to manage their personal self-care. We searched six major electronic databases and followed Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidance in the conduct of the review and reporting of results. Results: Our search identified 2808 papers of which only eight met our inclusion criteria. The included papers comprised six randomised controlled trials and two 'pre-post' studies reporting on evaluations of five different interventions. We used narrative synthesis to summarise our findings. The strongest evidence was for cognitive adaptation training, comprising environmental supports provided in the home that address the functional problems arising from specific cognitive impairments. Conclusion: The paucity of research into interventions to assist personal self-care for people with severe mental health problems is surprising. More research in this area is urgently needed. Increasing older adults' access to timely assessment and effective treatment can help reduce the personal and societal costs of anxiety disorders. The purpose of this review paper is to discuss important considerations for the assessment of anxiety disorders in older adults and offer adaptations to CBT treatment for this population. As part of assessment considerations, we discuss how physical health conditions, cognitive impairment, and functional limitations can impact anxiety disorder diagnoses with older adults. We also outline validated self-report measures of anxiety disorder symptoms for older adults and highlight the importance of assessing older adults' suitability for CBT. Several recommendations for adapting CBT protocols for older adults with anxiety disorders are described, such as extending psychoeducation, altered treatment pacing, use of content aids, and medical contraindications for interoceptive exposure. A case study is included that illustrates helpful assessment and treatment adaptions for an older woman with panic disorder. We highlight the pressing need to increase research and dissemination of CBT for anxiety disorders for older adults to meet the needs of an increasing segment of the population worldwide. Several clinical papers have provided clinical recommendations for how to provide cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for obsessive-compulsive symptoms among Orthodox Jewish individuals. However, no published studies have described culturally adapted CBT for anxiety or depression in this population or quantified the effectiveness of such approaches. We evaluated the effectiveness of CBT for symptoms of generalized anxiety and depression in a sample of Orthodox Jews (n = 65) and a comparison sample (n = 42) presenting to the Center for Anxiety, a private outpatient clinic with three offices in the New York area (www.centerforanxiety.org). A chart review revealed that all patients received CBT-based interventions with appropriate religious-cultural adaptations of treatment, which we present in two case studies. We observed statistically and clinically significant treatment gains from pretreatment to midtreatment (anxiety: t = 8.56, p <.001; depression: t = 8.01, p <.001), and again from midtreatment through termination (anxiety: t = 3.68, p <.001; depression: t = 3.62, p <.001). No significant differences in anxiety or depression were observed between Orthodox Jewish patients and controls at any time point or for treatment effects (anxiety: Wilks' Lambda =.950, F = 2.65, p =.076, η p 2 =.050; depression: Wilks' Lambda =.99, F = 2.00, p =.49, η p 2 =.014). Background: Data from sex offender treatment programmes (SOTP) on the re-offending of convicted sex offenders from the prison service in England and Wales was recently reviewed and found to be associated with no change in sexual reoffending. While this result is at variance with a number of other reviews it does give rise to concern as most programmes for individuals with intellectual disabilities adopt similar treatment methods. It is therefore important to consider the treatment outcomes for this client group by conducting a meta-analysis to examine treatment effects. Method: A systematic search of PsychINFO, EMBASE, MEDLINE and CINAHL was conducted in February 2019 using specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. Eighteen papers were identified, and their quality was assessed using a risk of bias framework. Scores on cognitive distortions, sexual knowledge and victim empathy measures as well as reports of further sexually abusive behaviour were pooled together to run a meta-analysis which yielded effect sizes for each outcome. Results: A large treatment effect was found for reducing cognitive distortions and increasing victim empathy, with a moderate effect found for improvements in sexual knowledge. This meta-analysis also found that 11.5% of individuals with intellectual disabilities who have completed these programmes will go on to display further sexually abusive behaviours. Conclusions: The findings suggest that cognitive distortions are significantly reduced following treatment, there are also significant improvements in sexual knowledge and victim empathy. A rate of 11.5% for further reported sexually abusive behaviour during follow up periods was found, which is higher than the rate found for mainstream SOTP completers. This explorative paper aims to test a model of operationalized subindicators that allows for a simplified analysis of the social bond between therapists and clients in violence therapy. A theoretical premise of this work is that a stable social bond is a prerequisite for the client's building a positive self-image and becoming reintegrated into society as nonviolent. The research entails the comparison of two different therapy treatments. A psychodynamic therapy against men's violence, undertaken voluntarily and frequently used in Nordic countries, is compared to a compulsory cognitive behavior therapy used for men in correctional settings. Although the therapists in both treatments attempt to balance the relationship between themselves and the clients, both therapies tend to alienate the parties from each other, thereby preventing the development of a stable social bond of solidarity. For both treatments, an awareness is needed of those parts of the therapy that evoke shame and pride, thereby permitting an evaluation of the treatment so that the positive quality of the social bond can develop. This paper discusses relevant research on structured therapy techniques used in the course of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) that are helpful in treating older adults with depressive disorders. These findings are compared and contrasted with clinical observations pertinent to the identification of moderator/mediator and other contextual factors critical to the efficacy of CBT for the treatment of this population. While some of these techniques may be viewed as a specific type of intervention in their own right (e.g., Behavioral Activation and Lifeskills Approach), their underlying theory and specific operations are consistent with the underpinnings of other cognitive and behavioral strategies and may be frequently juxtaposed within a CBT framework, depending on the nature of the problem and the specific available resources. Several common issues identified as being problematic for clinicians new to clinical work with older adults are highlighted, and useful information on how to adapt/modify traditional CBT approaches to augment treatment outcome with older adults is provided. Clinicians who use CBT will be familiar with most components discussed, but one novel augmentation towards the development of an age-appropriate format of CBT, termed Lifeskills Approach, is included. In this approach, clinicians are encouraged to identify and incorporate evidence of prior successful coping strategies to challenges that occur across the lifespan. This approach values and respects how clients have overcome aversive life experiences to facilitate attentional deployment away from a narrative of failure to one of resilience and self-acceptance, thereby down-regulating emotional distress. Abstract Although exposure-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is efficacious for childhood anxiety and obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD), many youth do not adequately respond to treatment. Extinction learning is an important process in exposure-based CBT. However, youth with anxiety disorders and OCD exhibit impairments in extinction processes that are best characterized by deficits in inhibitory learning. Therefore, the utilization of strategies to optimize inhibitory learning during exposures may compensate for these deficits, thereby maximizing extinction processes and producing more robust treatment outcomes for exposure-based CBT. This paper reviews several strategies to optimize inhibitory learning in youth with anxiety disorders and OCD, and presents practical examples for each strategy. This paper also highlights the difference between inhibitory learning-based exposures and prior conceptual approaches to exposure therapy in clinical practice. It concludes with a discussion of future directions for clinical research on inhibitory learning and exposure-based CBT in youth. When a person experiences symptoms that are suspected to be a possible dementia, they may be referred for specialist memory assessment. However, in the initial diagnostic stages, delirium and depression are differential diagnoses that require consideration, with attention paid to ruling these out as they can mimic the presentation of dementia. Similarly, delirium and depression can be superimposed on a person who already has an existing diagnosis of dementia. In both instances, this can be distressing and debilitating and requires community nurses to be able to differentiate between the conditions and to take appropriate measures to enable rapid identification and assessment and, when required, onward referral for treatment and management. The differentiating signs and symptoms of the three conditions can vary in their subtlety and similarity and require vigilance to identify in a timely manner. Community nurses have a significant role to play in the screening, identification, assessment and management of patients with dementia, delirium and depression. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has consistently been described as an "unprecedented" global health crisis. While the focus has been primarily on the medical and economic impact of the pandemic, psychological sequelae are anticipated. Primary care is the main point of access for mental health care in the United States, making it the ideal locale to provide psychological services for a larger proportion of the population than traditional mental health care settings. The aim of this paper is to describe how our multi-state, multi-site integrated primary care program adapted and applied cognitive behavioral therapy in the context of COVID-19. Access to mental health care was disrupted despite burgeoning mental health concerns, necessitating novel approaches to providing care. A stepped-care approach was implemented within our primary care practice, which consisted of a combination of low-intensity, high-yield stress management and resiliency building resources and cognitive behavioral therapy that were delivered flexibly based on patient preference, technological capabilities, state ordinances, insurance coverage, and institutional policies. The COVID-19 pandemic has universally threatened the building blocks of mental health, well-being, and quality of life, namely, expectations of safety, connectedness, hope, and individual and societal efficacy. Consequently, unprecedently large numbers of individuals are significantly stressed and many are at risk for relapse of mental health problems, exacerbations of existing mental and behavioral health problems, and new onset clinical problems. Because of the scope of the problem, a population-based public health perspective is needed, which in the context of disasters has well-established theories and prevention approaches. Public health approaches to disasters and pandemics focus on preventing subclinical problems from becoming clinical disorders, in comparison to clinical care approaches that focus on treating established disorders. Fortunately, specialty care clinicians who typically think about assessing and treating established disorders have the training and clinical competencies to deliver prevention-focused interventions. This paper is designed to help specialty care clinicians who use cognitive-behavioral strategies to understand the biopsychosocial impacts and resource deficits associated with COVID-19-related stressors and the public health perspective to address them. We also provide ways clinicians can help people who are suffering from significant stress and resource deficits bounce back and regain functioning. We describe psychological first aid, stress management, repeated ecological assessment, writing about stressors, problem-solving, and behavioral activation approaches to assist individuals at risk for enduring stress-linked problems. Access to adequate, much less state-of-the-art, mental health care is a global problem. Natural disasters, civil war, and terrorist conflict have forcibly displaced millions of Muslims and have resulted in a remarkable level of individual and communitywide trauma exposure. As a result, many are at risk for posttraumatic stress and other trauma-related disorders. Many religiously oriented Muslims traditionally rely on Islamic principles and teachings, as well as their community, to cope with and address trauma-related distress. Islamic Trauma Healing is a six-session, lay-led group intervention developed within a Somali Muslim community that integrates evidence-based trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy principles with cultural and religious practices aimed to enhance uptake and create an easily up-scalable intervention for a wide range of trauma. In sessions, narratives of prophets who have undergone trauma (e.g., Prophet Ayyub, faith during hard times) present Islamic principles and facilitate cognitive shifts. Group members spend individual time turning to Allah in dua (i.e., informal prayer), focused on exposure to trauma memories. Program themes arc across suffering to healing to growth following trauma. This paper describes the core theoretical principles and methods in the Islamic Trauma Healing program. We also describe leader perspectives and the program's train-the-trainer model, in which lay leaders are trained to further disseminate the program and allow Islamic Trauma Healing to be owned and sustained by the Muslim community. Family involvement in the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among veterans has the potential to improve treatment retention and outcomes. Current protocols that incorporate family members into treatment tend to involve at least 15 sessions, and none are designed to complement Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) or Prolonged Exposure (PE), the two most widely used and heavily promoted evidence-based PTSD therapies in the Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare system. The current paper describes the development and initial feasibility and acceptability of a Brief Family Intervention (the BFI) designed to be delivered as an adjunct to veterans' individual CPT/PE. The BFI focuses on providing psychoeducation about PTSD and treatment, building family member support for treatment, and reducing family symptom accommodation. A detailed review of the treatment structure and activities is provided, and qualitative data from four dyads (veterans and their spouses/significant others) at baseline and post-intervention are presented. Veterans and partners reported positive responses to the program and were enthusiastic about its utility. Moral injury refers to acts of commission or omission that violate individuals’ moral or ethical standards. Morally injurious events are often synonymous with psychological trauma, especially in combat situations—thus, morally injurious events are often implicated in the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for military service members and veterans. Although prolonged exposure (PE) and cognitive processing therapy (CPT) have been well established as effective treatments for veterans who are struggling with PTSD, it has been suggested that these two evidence-based therapies may not be sufficient for treating veterans whose PTSD resulted from morally injurious events. The purpose of this paper is to detail how the underlying theories of PE and CPT can account for moral injury-based PTSD and to describe two case examples of veterans with PTSD stemming from morally injurious events who were successfully treated with PE and CPT. This study reports on feasibility and acceptability outcomes of a brief, adjunctive cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) intervention focused on encouraging rapid behavior change in intensive eating disorder treatment (CBT-RR). Effectiveness outcomes of this study have been previously reported (MacDonald et al., 2017). CBT-RR was found to be feasible to implement and acceptable to patients, relative to the comparison condition (motivational interviewing [MI]). Rates of treatment retention were good in both conditions. CBT-RR participants reported higher goal-related alliance with the therapist compared to MI, whereas task-related and bond-related alliances with the therapist were similar between interventions. Both groups reported high levels of homework completion, and strong satisfaction with treatment. Following demonstration of feasibility and acceptability, the second part of this paper provides a detailed description of how we conceptualized and developed the CBT-RR intervention. A detailed description of the protocol components and session content is provided, with a fictional case vignette to illustrate use of the intervention. Autism is a type of neurodegenerative disorder, caused by genetic and environmental factors. Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have symptoms of attention deficit and behavioral problems. Child's sleep pattern has a significant effect on mood. Sleep problems are more common in children with ASD. The current study aimed to investigate the effect of non-pharmacological approaches on the improvement of sleep disturbances in patients with ASD. Materials & Methods We systematically searched PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Scopus, and Science Direct to identify relevant articles published from January 2009 to May 2019. All original articles from observational and interventional studies were reviewed. The CONSORT Statement and Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) checklist were used to assess the quality of selected papers. Results Reviewing 18 eligible articles according to the CONSORT checklist (for interventional studies) and STROBE (for descriptive studies) demonstrated that behavioral interventions, such as cognitivebehavioral therapy, bedtime fading with response cost, and functional behavioral assessment, physical activity such as aerobic exercise, swimming, and aquatic exercise and weighted blankets can improve sleep disturbances. Conclusion Restlessness, tantrums, increased stereotypic activities, and reduced learning level and speaking power in children with autism were caused by poor sleep quality and sleep deficiency, which may affect other dimensions of life. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to examine the effectiveness of treatment of panic and agoraphobia by medication versus cognitive behaviour therapy. Design/ methodology/approach: A survey questionnaire was used to elicit the responses from a total of forty-nine (N=49) subjects that met the DSM-111-R diagnostic criteria for panic disorder as well as agoraphobia. The subjects were derived from two integrated treatment programs that used combined-behavioural therapies for the treatment of panic disorder and agoraphobia, and they had completed treatment within a twelve month period. Analysis was conducted using t-tests and ANCOVA. Results/findings: A significant difference was found between the two forms of treatment - medication and combined behaviour therapy. Distorted negative self-images and impressions appear to play a key role in maintaining Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). In previous research, McManus et al. (2009) found that video feedback can help people undergoing cognitive therapy for SAD (CT-SAD) to develop a more realistic impression of how they appear to others, and this was associated with significant improvement in their social anxiety. In this paper we first present new data from 47 patients that confirms the value of video feedback. Ninety-eighty percent of the patients indicated that they came across more favorably than they had predicted after viewing a video of their social interactions. Significant reductions in social anxiety were observed during the following week and these reductions were larger than those observed after control periods. Comparison with our earlier data (McManus et al., 2009) suggests we may have improved the effectiveness of video feedback by refining and developing our procedures over time. The second part of the paper outlines our current strategies for maximizing the impact of video feedback. The strategies have evolved in order to help patients with SAD overcome a range of processing biases that could otherwise make it difficult for them to spot discrepancies between their negative self-imagery and the way they appear on video. Despite the widespread use of cognitive-behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing techniques among behavioral clinicians, most mental health clinicians do not know how to use these techniques for HIV prevention and sexual health promotion. Even less information is available to clinicians on how to work with HIV-positive gay and bisexual men who are at risk for transmitting HIV due to condomless anal sex. The purpose of the present paper is to assist behavioral therapists who are treating HIV-positive gay and bisexual men who engage in sexual behavior that may place them at risk for transmitting HIV or for other sexually transmitted infections. Gay Poz Sex is a form of small group counseling that uses the Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills model (e.g., Fisher & Fisher, 2000) as the theoretical basis, and a combination of psychoeducation, motivational interviewing, and cognitive-behavioral skills such as stimulus control and role-play exercises. The treatment has the goal of promoting a positive sense of sexual well-being and reducing sexual behavior associated with the transmission of HIV, such as condomless anal sex. This paper illustrates, using three case examples, the application of empirically supported therapy techniques to reduce condomless anal sex for HIV-positive gay and bisexual men. This case report illustrates a non-pharmacological approach to the treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) using hypnotherapy combined with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). A 54-year old Caucasian lady, a school teacher (involved with teaching and administrative duties) who has been suffering from IBS for more than 20 years, presented herself to the physician clinic with complaints of indigestion. The desensitization approach, cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy (CBH), that the author applied for this patient, involved seven stages. The focus of the therapy for this patient was on the stress experiences at her workplace and home, contributing to the worsening of her IBS symptoms. This therapy approach has benefited the patient because it helped her control her bowel symptoms and gave the patient an in-depth insight into her emotional components, tied to her IBS symptoms. This paper presents an approach of CBH into a regular hypnotherapy session. It is hoped that further developments of CBH will strengthen the evidence-based practice of clinical hypnotherapy. Hypnosis and biofeedback have demonstrated efficacy for chronic pain management. However, using hypnosis and biofeedback together may have additive or synergistic effects, resulting in better outcomes than if either are provided alone. In this paper we present a case study which explores the potential benefits of using hypnosis and biofeedback together with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for improving chronic pain management in a patient with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardic Syndrome (POTS) and its co-occurring anxiety, depression, insomnia, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) symptoms.
