Abstract

The Asia Pacific (AP) region is diverse and dynamic. It comprises over 40 economies, with about 24 markets that are relatively more active in terms of promulgating and implementing regulations that impact the biopharmaceutical industry and advance drug development. Although many country- and territory-specific regulations, often driven by the local economy and market dynamics, exist, the overall trend in the AP region is toward international harmonization and global convergence. More markets are now participating in the International Council on Harmonization (ICH), and there is growing interest in identifying and incorporating best practices from competent regulatory agencies. These include expedited pathways to speed access to new medicines, and incentives and other means to encourage innovation. Abstract

Abstract: Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is increasingly seen as an imperative for sustainable business and there is a growing literature on the effect of CSR on corporate reputation. Despite this, a pall of ambiguity and uncertainty remains around what CSR means and how it should be practiced. This paper offers a unique addition to the body of literature to date by revealing that CSR is an emerging industry in Australia, which is in the process of developing its own reputation as a set of business practices. The paper is based on exploratory qualitative research using a case study methodology. Interviews were conducted with key actors within the industry to investigate shared understandings of what CSR means, perceptions of CSR practice and of the industry as a whole, and who is involved in shaping these perceptions. The research revealed that the CSR industry in Australia is in its early stages of development and is therefore in need of increased internal cooperation if it is to develop a strong reputation. 3. What Do Markets Really Look Like?

Abstract

Social scientists have conceptualized market exchange relationships as governed by market calculus, socially embedded ties of trust and obligation, and legal ties of contract. We conceptualize and then measure these orientations to exchange relationships. We focus on the relationships of market exchange for a sample of Australian organizations with their largest supplier and customer. We find that market, socially embedded, and contract governance of exchange are widespread in the Australian economy. Consistent with the socially embedded perspective in sociology, we find that market calculus expectations are actually enhanced when the exchange relationship is socially embedded. The use of contracts is not strongly related to either market or social governance mechanisms. We also estimate statistical models predicting variation in market, social and legal governance mechanisms derived from neoclassical, social embeddedness, transaction cost, and flexible specialization theories. Abstract

Grand Theft Auto (GTA) games are highly successful, in terms of sales, and their content is part of an explicit business strategy which aims to exploit the latest technologies and platforms to develop content aimed at adult game players in certain markets. By all accounts this has been a highly successful strategy with the GTA franchise selling more than 30 million units across platforms by 2004, even before Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (GTA SA) was launched in late 2004 (Take Two Interactive 2004). The latter was the top selling console game in the USA and in the top 10 in the UK in 2005. At the same time the GTA series are arguably the most maligned of game products in many markets attracting much negative commentary and numerous legal actions in the USA. This paper examines the structure of the games industry and the culture of modding, the global production network of GTA games and public reaction to GTA:SA in the USA, Europe and Australia. This paper concludes that despite the widespread rhetoric of globalisation and the dismantling of state sanctioned censorship systems the censorship of cultural products continues in a less overt, but nonetheless, highly political, socially negotiated and nationally contingent way. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
