The transition between the Final Bronze and Early Iron Age remains one of the least understood periods in the archaeology of southern Central Asia. In this paper, we introduce the newly discovered site of Kimirek-kum-1 (floruit ca. 1250–1050 cal b.c.) in the old delta of the Zerafshan River in present-day Uzbekistan. Combined pedestrian survey, geomagnetic prospection, hand augering, and stratigraphic excavation, conducted between 2021 and 2023, demonstrate the site's unique potential to improve our understanding of the Final Bronze/Early Iron Age transition and the interface between the Central Eurasian steppes to the north and the Indo-Iranian world to the south. Notably, our investigations yielded nearly 400 objects in copper alloys, lead, gold, and semi-precious stone. These findings strongly suggest that Kimirek-kum-1 represents a substantial new Final Bronze/Early Iron Age center with extensive external links. Oriental representations of Muslims are often manifested in a society's media, literature, theatre and other creative means of expression. However, these representations, which are often historically and conceptually one-sided, have adverse repercussions for Muslims today, potentially leading to Islamophobia. Orientalism of Muslims in Western writings and discourses have been much discussed, debated and disproved, yet some works of literature continue to disseminate many of the earlier Oriental assertions about Islam/Muslims: that of being terrorists, misogynists, barbaric or uncivilized compared to the civilized West. Sherry Jones' The Jewel of Medina (2008) chronicles the history of Islam from the time of the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad, through the voice of his youngest wife Aisha. This paper argues that there is more to the image of the Muslim than what is portrayed by Western writers. Through an "(un)reading" of Sherry Jones' text, this paper unravels the misconceptions regarding early and forced marriage with a view to address the ways in which these misconceptions could lead to Islamophobia. Using Edward Said's theory of Contrapuntal reading, which urges the colonized to unread Western canonical texts to unearth the submerged details, this paper identifies and puts to question non-conforming depictions of Muslims in Sherry Jones' The Jewel of Medina (2008) - while placing the text in its historical space - in an effort to mitigate the growing stereotyping of Muslims and to address misconceptions with regard to Islamic history. Abstract This paper critically examines the social dynamics of emerald mining in the Swat Valley and its impact on the broader gemstone processing sector in Pakistan. In particular, it pays attention to problematizing the existing structure of artisanal, small-scale emerald mining, and its fragmented supply chain that grapples with a branding stigma of gem origin. It also considers an export-led beneficiation industry within Swat to generate sustainable livelihoods and help prevent future conflicts through fostering economic resilience. The paper emerges with inferences that while the literature on colored gemstones is increasingly critical of fragmented supply chains, it should also consider the role that gemstones can play, as a constitutive and representational force, toward (re)production and (re)engineering of the "tainted" image of post-conflict locations. This is particularly the case because gemstone origin is a major factor in value determination. Areas of conflict that have previously caused negative branding of gemstones can later be transformed into post-conflict development opportunities and lead to positive branding. Many African nations have been known to have an abundance of natural resources such as oil. minerals, diamonds, and other gemstones. With such resources at hand it comes as a surprise that African nations have not developed successfully. This is what is typically referred to as the resource curse. African countries are all too often characterized by corruption, slow economic growth, armed conflict, and damage to the environment. This paper will evaluate the extent to which the abundance of natural resources has affected development by looking at geographic factors such as location, climate, and resource availability in different African nations. By establishing the relationship between natural resources and development this paper seeks to expand the resource curse hypothesis to incorporate these additional geographic factors. Abstract: This paper will present portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) analysis applied in situ to three 11th- 12th century manuscripts covers considered as masterpieces of Northern Italy medieval jewellery: Pace di Ariberto (Milano), Liber Evangeliorium of Vercelli and Pace di Chiavenna. These objects show a sumptuous decoration of golden leaves, plates and filigrees, enamels and casted gems. The aim of this research is to obtain information on manufacturing techniques and composition of the artefacts, considering possible analogies and differences that may be useful for art historians’ discussion on manufacture place and artistic connections. XRF analysis was performed in order to determine the composition of the metals and enamels, and quantitative results, obtained using certified standards, undergo data treatment with multivariate analysis. The present paper will present a part of the results obtained on both the metals and glass materials, underlying the potential of pXRF in producing reliable results also when working in non-ideal conditions. A survey of gem materials began at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 2003. Key information includes not only the identity of the gem and the style of cut, where possible, but also the presence of any additional materials used for the enhancement, or in the simulation, of gems. The occurrence of enhancements and simulants was unexpectedly high and the materials used relatively unstable. This paper introduces the most commonly encountered historical techniques in order to aid the conservator in their identification, and thus inform decisions regarding the suitable treatment, storage and display methods for gem-set objects. Abstract: Shortly after the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States, the Wall Street Journal published an article claiming that al Qaeda sympathizers were using an obscure gemstone commodity known as tanzanite to raise funds for terrorist activities. Despite subsequent disclaimers by the US State Department, this allegation effectively marked tanzanite as a “conflict gem,” and set in motion a complex set of political maneuvers designed to rehabilitate the tanzanite industry’s reputation. This paper analyzes the immediate fallout from the Wall Street Journal article and the subsequent effects of anti-terrorist rhetoric on the tanzanite industry. I explore the origins of the “conflict gem” discourse and the political movement that has taken shape over the past decade to reform gemstone mining. Drawing on theories developed by critics of the fair trade movement, I examine a series of steps taken by the main corporate miner active in the tanzanite industry to re-brand and certify tanzanite as “conflict-free.” I underscore the degree to which these efforts have been inflected by new security provisions embodied in the USA Patriot Act. Abstract: Clasts of red siltstone with Glossopteris from moraine around Mt Rymill in the southern Prince Charles Mountains, East Antarctica, can be traced upslope in the Lambert Graben system to the nearby Gamburtsev Subglacial Mountains (GSM). The clasts contain zircons with SHRIMP U–Pb ages of 620–460 Ma and 1300–970 Ma from host rocks of intermediate to mafic rocks, and a clay fraction with a T DM Nd model age of 2.72 Ga and εNd of −18.3, derived from upper continental crust. East of the GSM, at Lake Vostok, clasts of siltstone in accreted ice can be traced to the Vostok Subglacial Highlands (VSH). The clasts contain zircons and monazites with SHRIMP U–Pb ages [Leitchenkov, G.L., Belyatsky, B.V., Rodionov, N.V., Sergeev, S.A., 2007. Other Mesozoic and Paleozoic sediments deposited in a radial pattern about central Antarctica contain detrital zircons dominated by populations aged 700–500 Ma and 1300–1000 Ma, which we interpret as reflecting a GSM-VSH provenance dominated by rocks generated during the Pan-Gondwanaland and Grenville events of supercontinental assembly. The electronic properties of heavily doped (1020–1021 [B]/cm3) p+ diamond epilayers have been investigated in the article [1] featured as Editor's choice of the present issue. Free holes affect strongly the room-temperature optical response of such monocrystalline films in the range of phonon energies. This is illustrated by the IR reflectance and edge-view micro-Raman polarized scattering spectra shown in the cover figure. The corresponding author, Etienne Bustarret, heads the Semiconductors Group of the Laboratoire d'Etudes des Propriétés Electroniques des Solides of CNRS in Grenoble, focusing on the growth of diamond and on the structural and optical properties of epitaxially grown layers and devices based on silicon carbide, diamond or nitrides. The paper was presented as an invited lecture at the 8th International Workshop on Surface and Bulk Defects in CVD Diamond Films (SBDD VIII), held in Diepenbeek-Hasselt, Belgium, 26–28 February 2003.
