Drawing on our experience requesting access to police organisations in Ghana and Niger, this article explores the organisation and operation of two West African bureaucracies. It focuses on the administrative modes and the state agents' routines in their dealing with civil actors. Exceptional and risk carrying requests such as ours concerning a permission to conduct participant observation in police organisations create insecurity on the part of the bureaucrats concerned. Although rarely expressed in field reports and often discounted as a series of fortunate coincidences, we consider the researcher's access (or refusal) a crucial and illuminating moment of fieldwork. In our case, both technical bureaucratic operations and informal networks played a central role in our own approach as well as in the state agents' work routines and reflections on their daily occupation. Following an emic description, we call these two modes of procedure "ground work" and "paper work". The oscillating between the two reflects an inevitable interlacing of bureaucratic and informal operations, characteristic for bureaucratic organisations worldwide. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Paper and paperboard incorporate a large variety of use in today''s global society. Packaging is among them. The fields where paper and paperboard are adopted in the form of packaging include food and beverage, tobacco, electric and electronic equipment, machinery, construction materials, furniture, etc. But once the packed product is consumed, what happens to the packaging? What happens to the tons and tons of paper and paperboard packaging? The answer is waste accumulation. An increasing problem of waste generation has become associated with paper and paperboard packaging. Recognizing the challenge, various nations, especially EU member states have adopted packaging policies contemplated to deal with the issue. Among the policies instituted, environmental taxation has received comparatively little attention both in terms of application and investigating literature. Applied in the form of weight basis charges, the tax policy aims at reducing the demand for the subjected products. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the effectiveness of the environmental taxes applied on paper and paperboard industrial packaging in the case of Denmark. Using a panel data analysis, the investigation focuses on the taxation impact on the import trade flow of paper and paperboard packaging entering into Danish territory. Gravitational regression model analysis is adopted to judge on the trade pattern. Results reveal that environmental taxes were effective in reducing the quantity imported of paper and paperboard. The reasons that might have stimulated the positive implementation are also emphasized as a remainder for future applications of the policy. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: With the progressive acceleration of globalization in the world, the study of intercultural communication is accordingly flourishing day by day on both domestic and international levels. In order to discern the current trends of intercultural communication research in China and abroad and furthermore provide suggestions for future research, the present study has made an analysis of 368 intercultural communication articles published between 2001 and 2005 in 11 major international and domestic academic journals, among which 203 articles are from 10 major domestic academic journals and 165 ones from the American journal entitled International Journal of Intercultural Relations. Each article is analyzed from two perspectives: the research contents and research methods. The results indicate that intercultural communication research in China is sharply different from research abroad with regards to research contents and methods. The main concern of researchers abroad is intercultural adaptation and intercultural training while the Chinese researchers are mainly concerned with cross-cultural pragmatics. As far as research methods are concerned, most studies abroad are conducted using empirical research methods, the majority of which adopt the quantitative research method. On the contrary, most studies in China are non-empirical research. Of the small number of empirical studies, considerable attention is paid to the mixed use of both qualitative and quantitative research methods. The article discusses Hawaiian groups' resistance to globalization. Rebellion begins when youth started to fight for the environment and their rights. Community members opposed the construction of golf courses, luxury condominiums, hotels and resorts. Local residents fought the construction of a geothermal power plant in Puna and the missile-launching in Ka'Ü district. In 1997, Stephen Yamashiro wanted to lease 4, 400 acres of Hawaii's Island to Oji Paper Ltd. Several organizations opposed the plan and in November, 1997, State Board of Land and Natural Resources rejected it. The author states that these events indicate the emergence of a more democratic politics on Hawaii Island and illustrates how local communities can set their own parameters for economic development.

Managerial orientation has become a key concept regarding SMEs internationalization even if not all companies have enough experience in this complex process. During the last decades, traditional internationalization practices (exporting), broadened and developed into a multi-faceted and more differentiated activity that enhances the competitiveness of a business. This paper's objective is to present how and if the international activity of a business and its environment are influenced by management strategic decisions. By analyzing the successful internationalization of Romanian cases, this paper aims to establish a connection between certain managerial approaches and the success of the business (risks taken, capabilities, and process in general). Fredric Jameson argues that the passage from monopoly to late capitalism or globalization has resulted in a "bewildering new world space" marked by a "weakening of historicity," if not the outright "suppression of history." As a result, this dizzying, dehistoricized totality has become unrepresentable. If this foreclosure is premised on the capture of social life by the "interpenetration of government and big business" under late capitalism, this paper argues that the forest, as a historically and narratively illegible space, may offer an escape. Drawing on a Marxist tradition of ecocriticism, in particular Robert Spencer's work on "forest literature," and notions of haunting and spectrality, this paper investigates how the forest in Alvin Yapan's Sandali ng mga Mata can "illuminate capitalism's world-destroying power" and see through the simultaneous transparencies, opacities, and distortions of late capitalism. In the context of the country's deepening entanglement with globalization and profound vulnerabilities to the climate emergency, the idea of the forest as a way of seeing hopefully contributes to such an urgent political task. The acceptance of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015 shifted the consideration toward sustainability-linked aspects in both developed and developing nations. Currently, the most critical ecological and economic problems are associated to ecological contamination and sustainability. Thus, this current study employs load capacity factor (LCF), a comprehensive ecological assessment tool that captures both the ecological foot (demand side) and biocapacity (supply side) of the ecosystem to scrutinize the effect of environmental taxes, technological innovation and renewable energy on LCF while regulatory for globalization and economic progress in the case of top ten SDGs nations. The paper used MMQR to capture the influence of each variable at different quantiles from 1994 to 2018. The study's outcome shows that technology innovation, environmental Tax, renewable energy and globalization are negative and significant in reducing LCF within the countries. Again, the study exposed that economic growth contributes positively to LCF. However, the interaction term between technology innovation and renewable energy upsurges the LCF across all the quantiles. Moreover, the panel Dumitrescu and Hurlin causality test results revealed a one-way causality exists between economic growth and LCF, running from economic growth to LCF. Using a qualitative single case study approach this paper explores the views of academics which ultimately impact their actions to implement international curriculum within one institutional context in South Africa. The results show that a tailored IoC at an institution situated at the peripheries of the Western world is a policy that advances diversity of thought, decolonization of curriculum content, and appreciation of indigenous cultures and languages. The theory that emerged in this study underscores that IoC is a bottomup customized policy as it applies to the needs of the students to become wider thinkers and professionally integrated in the intercontinental and global job markets. Further recommendations for future theory and practice suggest IoC as an educational approach that accounts for the geographic positionality of the institution, and all aspects of diversity, rather than for a collective institutional identity. This study develops and confirms a model that examines the relationship between Big Data Analytics Capabilities (BDAC), Blockchain Technology (BT), and Internationalization Process (IP). It also requires various efforts to explore how Dynamic Accounting Information System Capability (DAISC) mediates the interconnections between BDAC, BT, and IP. This study focuses on small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Vietnam, which are widely recognized as crucial to the Vietnamese economy. The current research utilized the hypothetico-deductive method. The proposed model's hypothesized linkages were based on a comprehensive evaluation of relevant literature and investigations. The statistics database was created using a paper-and-pencil survey distributed to 612 accountants in SMEs in southern Vietnam utilizing the convenient and snowball sampling technique. A covariance-based structural equation modelling approach was used to assess the measurement and structural models in this research due to its ability to offer a strong foundation for analyzing intricate linkages within a research framework. The outcome confirmed the significant and positive relationships between BDAC, BT, and IP. Concurrently, these relationships were partially influenced by DAISC. The practitioners would greatly benefit from detailed insights on the findings, as they would provide guidance on how to identify and take advantage of the growth opportunities afforded by digital technology. Moreover, the observations could provide policymakers with new insights on necessary policy measures to support the application of digital technologies and encourage the implementation of a dynamic accounting information system, which could result in significant benefits in the future. This paper aims at analysing the manner in which the ancient and modern world conceived the civilized and the savage. People have always felt distant from tribal communities and have constructed narratives projecting them as inferior to civilised societies, believing in their own myths that may be meaningless to other societies and building peculiar practices that may seem strange to others like the Indian caste system. The Enlightenment philosophy's negotiation has been one-sided as the people with 'voices' and 'expressions' wrote their versions of stories vehemently denying the existence of the others. Human thought and systems of languages accepted the division of civilised as advanced from uncivilized. Purpose. This research aims to revisit the relationship between globalization and income inequality while improving on previous research. It also considers how technological advancements and human capital can alter this relationship in countries with different income levels worldwide. Methodology. This research is based on panel data regression models with multiplicative terms where, after controlling for other important inequality factors, different types of globalization are regressed using two alternative measures of income inequality. Multiplicative terms allowed us to analyze the heterogeneity of the globalization-inequality nexus, i.e., how it changed over the distribution of the moderating factors: technological advancements and human capital. Findings. The results show that different types of globalization impact income inequality differently: trade globalization reduces income inequality in some cases, while financial globalization can increase it. Education proved to moderate the effect of globalization on reducing income inequality; technological advancement, on the other hand, stimulates the impact of globalization in terms of increasing income inequality. Originality. This paper differs from previous research by focusing on multiple aspects of globalization, using additional TOP20/BOT20 estimates to measure income inequality and to explore the differences between the income inequality/globalization relationship based on the effects of education and technological advancement on countries with different income levels. This paper investigates the impact of energy consumption's Green Quality Index (GQI) on carbon dioxide (CO 2) emissions in the United States from 1970 to 2021. At this point, the estimated models control for the effects of gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, urban population, and globalization on CO 2 emissions. The Autoregressive Distributed Lag estimations demonstrate that GQI and globalization reduce CO 2 emissions in the short- and long run. However, GDP per capita and urban population are positively related to CO 2 emissions in the short- and long-run. Different estimation techniques confirm the long-run baseline findings. Globalization has caused a paradigm shift in higher education, which is is a subject of research and discussion within the global community. The purpose of this research was to present cross-case comparison of key patterns of globalization impact on higher education in some Asian countries. A qualitative comparative-analytical and descriptive approach was adopted to analyze the similarities and differences among education systems and globalization trends in higher education in Asian region. The data was collected from policy papers on higher education reforms and strategy, and through interviews of faculty and students. While the study focused on the comparative analysis of higher education, impact of innovation, and challenges related to globalization of higher education institutions, it discovered changed dynamics in higher education in Asian countries. It was found that a special focus on internationalization of higher education is required in the context of integrated policy strategies. Such reforming strategies and transformations in higher education systems in Asian countries would have practical relevance. The relationship between state fragility and resource degradation is well established. The relationship could be either direct or indirect. Indirectly, resource degradation leads to frustration among the population and exacerbates competition for existing resources which can cause violent conflicts. These conflicts and armed violence then become a cause of state fragility. This paper aims at elaborating the linkage between resource degradation and state fragility. In doing so, the paper also draws a linkage between resource degradation and national security, highlighting how resource degradation can become a threat to the national security of a state in different aspects. The paper focuses on case studies where resources have become a cause of conflict or are expected to become a cause of confZict, exacerbating the fragility of fragile developing states. In this regard, the paper makes use of secondary sources like books, articles, and journals to highlight three case studies of fragile developing states. The three case studies of Nigeria, Darfur, and Balochistan in Pakistan are viewed from the theoretical lens of Abraham Maslow's theory of human motivation. By putting scale and (re)scaling at the center of its analysis, this paper aims to grasp the scalar process of EU-Turkey relations from historical, political and social perspectives. In doing so, this paper will first overview the existing theories on scale and re-scaling concerning their use in political geography and IR. The second task of this paper will be to examine the relevance of scale in EU relations from historical, political, and social perspectives. In the third part, as a first step, this paper investigates whether the EU and Turkey can redefine and reconstruct a new EU-Turkey space. This paper discusses how the internationalization of higher education has brought about its impact in terms of spreading standardized academic programs, scientific research, innovation, culture exchange, and strengthening ties between involved higher education institutions and countries to resolve mutual benefit challenges. Social and economic inequalities are both significant and important issues in the study of globalization, while global forces have widened their consequences such as unleashing poverty and gender imbalances in terms of equality. The reasons lie in the reformulation of economic power associated with burgeoning free-market economies and accompanying diffusion of instrumental rationality, commoditization, and secularism. In contrast to the economic downturn and global softening of labor markets, which call for greater social protection, the welfare state has been replaced by a "non-sovereign power" wary of its global positioning but less powerful in shaping daily lives of its populace among social forces including the role of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). However, nation-states still serve important functions in a globe dominated by transnational corporate interests. With few options and having to make controversial choices, welfare provision has seen trends towards the commodification of social welfare whilst globalization is affecting social contracts across nation-states. This paper critically engages in these challenges to governance and development, and assesses how social welfare has been redefined and extended while many populations become embedded in greater forms of poverty creating unevenness across nation-states. The United States' strategic narrative on the rise of the People's Republic of China (PRC) has evolved throughout a half-century of changing world orders and mutual perceptions of strategic intent. From the early 1970s and during the last two decades of the Cold War, the US saw a bipolar world in which it sought to assist China's own rise as a partner in Soviet containment and economic globalisation. During its "unipolar moment" in the post-Cold War era, Washington maintained strong economic engagement but increasingly perceived Beijing as an uneasy partner and rising competitor. With the acknowledgement of the transition towards multipolarity, a bipartisan consensus emerged in Washington about the necessity to contain China's rise as a global political and military power and to blunt its challenge to the "rules-based order" (RBO). The evolution from globalisation "friend" to global "foe" points to three directions of the current US strategic narrative on China's rise: defending the RBO, de-coupling to secure Western-normed globalisation, and shaping the Indo-Pacific security environment. The paper concludes that while the US has succeeded in aligning the three forms of strategic narrative (system, identity, and policy), it faces considerable challenges, including from China's counter-narratives. Built on the author's previous work, this paper lays down a theoretical framework for building a global community from an intercultural communication perspective. The rapid development of new media in recent decades has accelerated globalization and transformed human society into a highly interconnected place through changing the way people think and interact. This indicates that a global society is gradually emerging due to the convergence of new media and globalization trend in the 21st century. However, the emergence of a global society does not necessarily mean that a new sense of community will follow. This paper calls for using "community" to replace "society" and employs the three elements of "home", i.e., relation, process and meaning, to theorize the concept of "global community". The author argues that the global community is a new cultural home, which can be analyzed from four perspectives, including the contextuality of intercultural communication, boundary game, boundary wisdom, and global ethics of intercultural communication study. While decoding the journey of the last Seventy-five years as a sovereign, independent nation, the foreign policy of India offers interesting paradigm shifts in focus and tectonic change in strategy, for academic inquiry, intellectual debate and strategic thought. Situating India in the larger discourse of contemporary foreign policy choices and challenges reveals a trajectory of gradual evolution from a nascent post-colonial state, embracing liberal pluralism to an emerging global power pursuing proactive policies based on pragmatic realism in the twenty -first century. At the stroke of the midnight hour on the eve of independence, India as a newly independent state had articulated the Nehruvian idealist vision based on transformative ideas to shape the post-war world order. But gradually it veered towards a more pragmatic approach to confront a world increasingly shaped by realism. The present paper strives to analyze the dynamic character of the international and domestic milieu that shaped India's foreign policy after independence. It further delves into critically examining the objectives and principles of India's foreign policy, which determined the transformative assertion of an emerging power in the global arena in the present century. The paper aims at presenting a nuanced interpretation of various political, ideological, and strategic rationales ofIndia's foreign policy by contextualizing it in the backdrop of its post-colonial predicaments and the contemporary geopolitical and geo-economic challenges in an increasingly globalizing world. The aim of this research paper is to find the influence of the demographic factors on national culture and the influence of national culture on consumer necessities and luxuries of Pakistani Consumers. The study was set within the consumption context of Pakistani consumers. First a review of demographic factors and national culture is provided. Then the model is tested through SmartPLS and SPSS. It was observed that education and monthly income is significantly influencing the national culture of Pakistani consumers. However, the necessities are not but the luxuries are significantly influenced by the national culture. This research is helpful for the business organizations that deal in the consumer products in the aspect of distinguishing the consumer products into necessities and luxuries. AT VARIOUS TIMES, IT HAS BEEN DEMONSTRATED THAT WHAT WORKS IN A PART OF THE WORLD MAY NOT WORK, IN THE SAME WAY, IN ANOTHER PART, EVEN AS GLOBALIZATION CONTINUES TO ATTEMPT TO DEFINE WHAT HAPPENS IN THE WHOLE WORLD. THE ARTICLE EXAMINES HOW INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE HAS INFORMED HOW NIGERIANS' ATTITUDES DEFY THE GLOBAL OUTLOOK BUT DETERMINE THEIR SURVIVAL TECHNIQUES THROUGH A RE-INTERPRETATION OF THEIR SITUATIONS USING THE UNDERSTANDING, SKILLS AND PHILOSOPHIES GARNERED IN THE PROCESS OF RELATING WITH THEIR NATURAL ENVIRONMENT. This paper explores the Algonquin concept of wetiko, or windigo--a ruthless cannibal spirit--to explain the state of America today. Native American scholars such as Jack Forbes and Basil Johnston suggest wetikos really exist, and that their insatiable hunger and psychopathic lack of regard for others is at the root of globalization, neo-liberal economics, the destruction of the environment, and the widescale oppression of the world's people. This paper investigates the relationship between modernism and wetiko, and proposes an origin to the wetiko mindset, asking whether it is archetypal, and therefore potentially present in all of us, though more actualized in some. Finally it asks how indigenous societies have historically guarded against wetiko and how we can learn from them to resist wetikos now, since if we fail to confront them, they will eat us all alive. 21st century visualizes several changes in India’s overall political, educational, linguistic, cultural, and economic achievements / catastrophes. India’s sociolinguistic scenario has experienced a remarkable transformation in the areas mentioned above. Some of these transformations may be progressive and some may be non-progressive or even can be termed as retrogressive. One can attribute several reasons for these changes. It is appropriate to say that the impact of globalization can be the main reason for the positive transformation India has experienced in the areas of technology, education, and competitiveness. In the meantime, it is not a misnomer if we claim that globalization, Indian language policies, planning strategies and different kinds of socio linguistic situations have contributed significantly towards the retrogressive metamorphosis of linguistic and cultural subsidence. This paper tries to throw some light on how the impact of globalization and the government policies could negatively contribute towards possible downgrading or even elimination of the minority cultures and languages. Using the electricity access rate to measure progress towards the Sustainable Development Goal target for universal access to electricity by 2030, about 580 Millions African people lack electricity access. However, globalization offers technological innovation, financial resources and international cooperation opportunities to achieve universal electricity access. This paper investigates whether increasing globalization levels can help achieve the goal of expanding access to electricity services in Africa. The analysis is based on panel data of 36 African countries over the 2000–2017 period and system GMM for empirical estimations. Our findings indicate that economic, social, and political globalization matters for increasing access to electricity. We also find that economic globalization reduces disparities in access to electricity. Further decomposing of economic globalization indicates that financial globalization, FDI and trade openness increase access to electricity. Furthermore, while financial globalization and FDI widen disparities in access to electricity, trade openness negatively affects disparities. The results also indicate that economic growth is one of the important channels through which globalization enhances electricity access. Finally, we carry out sub-regional analyses and find that these patterns are robust across Sub-Saharan African countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines the significance of real and monetary integrations for the inflationary dynamics of an emerging country, Turkey. The analysis accounts for 2-digit items of CPI inflation, which can be broadly categorized as tradable versus non-tradable and goods versus services. We find that a fall in the inflation gap between partner countries is mainly related to real integration whereas the co-movement of inflation is prominently driven by monetary policy co-movements. The product-type analysis shows that inflation gap in tradable items between trade partners shrinks and becomes more correlated with the (de)convergence and co-movement of real integration. This paper aims to offer a diagnosis of exporting companies with an interest in the international market from a gender perspective. To this end, we show descriptive evidence using data from Spain gathered by ICEX. The application of advanced data analysis techniques allows us to explore the characteristics of companies with an interest in internationalization from a gender perspective, whether there are differences both in the use of ICEX support services and in the target markets for this support in the case of womanled or female-owned companies, and whether there are differences in export pathways from the year 2000 onwards.
